The greatest answer to a question I've ever heard came from Phil Lynott.
I believe he was being interviewed by Melody Maker magazine and the interviewer asked...
"What's it like to be black and Irish?"
To which Lynott replied, "Like a Guinness."
PRICELESS! 🤣🤣🤣
Black people should literally be worshipped more than Jesus. Buddha, and Mohammed combined

Must be a legend to say some shit like that😂
Phil was an incredible performer. And His writing ability was underrated.
Agreed

@@jeffking4176 no he wasn’t . Lizzy never made it in USA. Due to Garry Moore leaving halfway through the tour . The management was useless .
In their last years there was not long term members of the band ,but musicians asked to tour -sometimes with only a few weeks notice . I’m afraid it was good ole rock and roll that was his downfall.
@@BigBoaby-sg1yoso you’re saying that because Thin Lizzy never made it in the USA that Phil Lynot was not a great musician/songwriter/performer?
@@joebashorun8043 lol 😂 No , their management sucked 🤷♂️
@@joebashorun8043 Thin Lizzy failed to break America because of a series of incidents that caused their backers to lose confidence in the band, former drummer Brian Downey said.
In a Guardian interview marking the release of new box set Rock Legends, Downey, longtime guitarist Scott Gorham and ex-guitarist Brian Robertson discussed the setbacks that meant leader Phil Lynott’s big ambition remained unfulfilled.
Their big moment came when “The Boys are Back in Town” spent 17 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, climbing to the No.12 position. But their U.S. tour was cut short when Lynott contracted hepatitis, and a return visit was canceled after Robertson broke his hand in a bar brawl. In 1978, the band switched guitarists from Gary Moore to Midge Ure while in the States.
“All these incidents did not impress our American record company, and our promoters,” Downey said. “They backed off big time. Our career was cut short in a couple of weeks. Gary leaving the band halfway through a tour was the death knell for Thin Lizzy in America, it really was. We were still hugely popular in the U.K. and Europe, but the last semblance of trying to make it in America was blown out of the window.”
Robertson asserted that Gorham had only been hired because of Lynott’s American dream. “Scott - we didn’t really want him in the band,” he said. “But there were reasons for having him. He was American and he had long hair. It was nothing to do with the guitar playing. But Phil was thinking about world domination, about getting to America.”
Gorham himself said Thin Lizzy began to disintegrate when heroin entered the story. “I had dabbled with heroin in California before I came, so England was saving me,” he recalled. “I didn’t know anyone who had it or was doing it, and I was really clean and felt great about life.” That changed when he was in Lynott’s hotel room one day. “[H]e pulls out this package … I see the brown powder, and he says: ‘You know what this is?’ And I went: ‘Yeah.’ ‘Have you ever done it before?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘You want to do some now?’ ‘Yeah.’ And that was the start of the whole thing. That was the worst mistake that band ever made.”
But Robertson claimed that heroin had been causing problems a far back as the cut-short U.S. tour of 1976: ‘[T]hey were keeping it low key, but the management knew,” he said, noting that Lynott had caught hepatitis from a dirty needle.
Gorham recalled the sadness surrounding Lizzy’s last show with Lynott in 1983, less than three years before the frontman’s death. “Both Phil and I were hurting from the addiction, and I just wanted to get off the stage,” he said. “I didn’t feel well, I didn’t look good, nothing was right. Everyone that was playing that show was on the side of our stage. There were people crying and applauding and crying again. All I could think was: ‘I’ve got to get off this stage.’ How terrible is that? It was a real shit way to end the whole thing.”
No Joe ! They never made it in the states , Europe yes , but USA nope . I’m sure you know if a band tours say USA ,it is not the band that set it up and requires backing/ financing from agencies who won’t invest in a band with substance abuse issues ,plus the fluid population of the band .
The biggest album sales in USA are country, gospel ,soul , bluegrass and folk music and not rock .
The investors/ backers saw the writing on the wall and decided not to invest . Besides Lizzy never played particularly large venues .
I met him in 1977 after a great concert. He was warm and friendly. Great guy!
I was lucky enough to see Thin Lizzy and Queen . It was in Miami, 1977. My first concert ever! After watching these 2 bands blow the doors off the place, every concert after seeing them was like..."meh". Nothing and no other band came close to these guys!
~Rock in Peace Phil and Freddy ~❤
Lynott......rock star and poet. Thin Lizzy are still my favourite band and I have all their albums on vinyl. RIP Phil.
Uh, he takes a back seat to no one. Thin Lizzy is in my top, five rock bands. I have deep purple mark 4 and The Rolling Stones just above Phil’s band
36 was no age really. Shame he died so young. The world lost a great talent. RIP Phil. ❤
In 1982 I met Phil Lynott on a train in London. I was walking through the carriages looking for a seat and ahead of me I saw these very long legs in jeans blocking the aisle. I said "excuse me" and this fella put his book down, looked up at me and said "sorry there darlin'". I'd like to say we then had a deep and meaningful conversation about Thin Lizzys music, but I was so dumbstruck and all I could say was "thanks Phil", and off I went still looking for a seat....❤
Saw Thin Lizzy at the Reading festival 1983. Truly amazing!! I was directly in front of Phil only a few rows back with a perfect view. I will never forget the way he and the band performed “The sun goes down” Just brilliant. Love you always ❤
Phil had more charisma in his pinky toe than I’ll ever have in my entire body.
I met him in Boston in the late 70s when they were playing a multi-night stand at The Orpheum, and hanging out at the club that I worked in. As a thank you gift to us they took the stage at The Rat for a set on the last night that they were in town. Phil was a nice man, and a brilliant musician.
My parents met at a skid row gig at the moeran youth club in 68. Dad was a childhood friend. So i can thank Philo for my existence lol. He very much is a local hero and a mural is painted of him around the corner. I went to school with his cousins who lived in the house he grew up in. He was the first real irish rock star
i had the pleasure to see him live with Lizzy several times❤
I've been a Thin Lizzy fan since 1976.
Thanks so much for this, loved Phill's playing and the music he produced and sang. He certainly knew some legends in the trade without a doubt, Eric Bell certainly a magician with a guitar and of course Gary Moore. Well done, love this! RIP Phil, and Gary too.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! 🥰
@@HarmonyHeartsLifestyle-ul5yv More than welcome.
Thin Lizzy's version of Whiskey in the Jar was really interesting. At first I didn't care for it but over the years it's now my favorite version.
Miss you Phil - and RIP Philomena Lynott (22 October 1930 - 12 June 2019)
I read his Mother's book it was so sad, she blamed herself on his Death..it couldn't have been easy to be a black kid in Dublin at that time, his Mother in the UK, religious Catholic Ireland was a nightmare for unmarried Mothers. He obviously had inner demons from childhood. Very talented man ❤ loved by the Irish

Excellent job with this, brother! Thin LIzzy remain one of my all time favourite bands and Phil's creative genius will always be remembered and cherished.. Cheers from Toronto.
Nice Video, Great Work! Phil Was the King of Rock!
Thank you I appreciate you 🥰
Absolute legend - only got to see him once on the Australian "Chinatown" tour - amazing! Gone but never forgotten.
😢 he had so much talent and was very handsome too too young to die 💔 😢 😔 😪
Take a minute and try to imagine what this great artist might have created and shared with the world had it not been for his addictions.
I f-ing HATE DRUGS.
R.I.P. Phil.
Saw Thin Lizzy open for Nazareth in Columbus Ohio. I was 14 and it was my first concert. Amazing!
Phil was the missing link between Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen. At the peak of his powers, he was unbeatable. Just listen to "I'm Still In Love With You", "Jailbreak" or "The
Rocker" for confirmation. He left far too early.
There can be only one phil lynott. He will never be equalled by anyone ❤
Lizzy's debut along with "Nightlife "shows what a talented songwriter Phil was . The track "Still in love with you" is sublime and one of he's best compositions . The sons on the first album showed what potential he had as a lyricist and composer . Add to that a great bassist and performer he was one of the best .
I really enjoyed THIN Lizzy I am glad you brought up his background as a child of a mixed marriage
Fantastic singer and band. Great drinking songs. One of my all-time bands. 🇦🇺 😊
I got talking to his mum outside Bruxelles the pub where his statue is situated in Dublin, lovely lady, she obviously felt close to him by visiting that rock pub, I've seen her there multiple times before her death a few years ago
A real rocker ,still miss Philo what a guy he was.
A great great loss ' ...Phil was an amazing musician and writer, above all he was a bloody nice guy'
This is a fantastic channel! I've never seen so many great pictures of Phil. From a baby & on through his incredible career. Thank You!
Thank you so much, I appreciate you!
73 to 77 I was high school, we loved Thin Lizzy. I remember the desert partys listening to them. Check out the "Cowboy Song ". RIP Phil.🔊 👍
From Arizona?
Casa Grande Arizona. 👍
Philip was a musical and lyrical genius. And a phenomenal bass player. Thin Lizzy were one of the greatest rock bands ever. RIP Phil
One of the greatest bands ever to me especially with the twin guitar's of Gorham and Robertson 🎸🎸 , I can't believe that they never cracked America , I never got the chance to see them but I saw a tribute band called Limehouse Lizzie who are absolutely Brilliant and keeping his music alive after all he was a fantastic song writer 🎵🎵🎤
Other than "The Boys R Back in Town" America never really heard them
Wow, that's amazing that you mentioned Limehouse Lizzy. Back in 2003 I met the father of my kids when he invited me to Dolans warehouse in !imerick Ireland to watch Limehouse Lizzy. Good band I have to say. My relationship ended badly but my adoration of TL will flow through my blood forever 😊😊😊
@kendallevans4079 I'm American and as a 13 yo knew Thin Lizzy. One of my all time favorite. Phil's passing was devastating. All I listened to for months after he passed. RIP whoever keeps his music alive, thank you
Well I’m Dino Bonaduce, owner of Dino’s Bar & Grill, and I wound up 86ing “The Boys” that Phil was always riding the legs of. I DO NOT tolerate any fighting in my establishment.
"If the boys wanna fight, you better let 'em!" Say 5 "Fighting My Way Back"'s, 4 "Ode to Liberty"'s (better recite a couple "Cowboy Song"'s for good measure as well) & repent you heathen & be absolved of your sin!!😆
We loved him dearly.♥️♥️🇮🇪🇮🇪
Heroin has taken far too many of my heroes. What a shame we lost Phil. Lizzy were a hell of a band.
Greatest Irish band ever saw Thin Lizzie at Birmingham town hall and in Australia later on. love Phil even more now I know he is a brummie
Great tribute. Glad you mentioned War of the Worlds and the character Parson Nathaniel. I grew up listening to that album.
I would have thought he'd been playing bass since childhood. He was a quick learner
Slade was also a awesome band, I was a huge fan in the 70's and 80's .
No
I don’t see the connection 🤔🤔
Only 36?? I thought he was older than that when he died. He did so much in such a short time.
He whas so kind love him me and my sister spend time whit him when they played in Denmark miss him🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
My first concert Thin Lizzy 1981 Coventry Theatre aged 13
Seen them live in very last concert at the rds in dublin best band live ive ever seen and seen them in cyms in Tralee
After all that is said n done, Phil is n will always be, a hero to me ❤️
I'm a lucky guy I got to see thin lizzy in Sacramento when I was sixteen awesome show
Gone to soon, the addiction takes another...RIP
A proper rocker.
A proper star.
Hi guys, I'm an Irish lady living in Limerick, 42yrs of age and a massive massive Lizzy fan, they are the best thing ever to have come out of this country. Scott often comes to Dolans down here to play gigs. Unreal band, they really really fuel my blood with ferocious energy. Incredible band, awful ahame that heroin caught him. I'm in early recovery from substance abuse so i can relate to his struggles 400%, unfortunately he had endless funds at the top so endless supply of drugs. Apparently the last words he said were ' mother, what have i done to you' . Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong coz this is just from my memory reserves haha. Go raibh maith agat !!!!!!😊😊😊
He couldn't get out of Ireland quick enough. He lived in Kew, London.
He was a nasty, drunken bastard.
"Merciful Jesus, what have I done to ya"
The "Boys" idea crops up in his songs. He wanted to be one of the 'Boys' as do most boys growing up.
You totaly missed John sykes and stone cold sober. Best song from TL
The song you're referring to is 'Cold Sweat' from the 'Thunder and Lightning' album. It was a good album with a few memorable songs, but far from their best, IMO.
I think the best period was 'Night Life', 'Johnny the Fox', 'Fighting', 'Jailbreak' and 'Bad Reputation'. 'Black Rose' and 'Renegade' also had some great tracks.
Cheers!
@@siriusfun Sykes was the best guitarist that band ever had
Holy War
I didn't know Gary Moore played with Thin Lizzy? Learn something new everyday.
I saw Gary Moore as a solo opening act for ZZTop at a small venue in Aalborg back around 2002. Cool concert.
Waiting for an alibi...good lizzy tune with Gary

Us Lizzy's have a lot to be thankful for the the timeful intervention of Chas Chandler
So lucky to have seen them in Seattle ❤
Nicely told, thank you.
I’m glad I got to see them in a concert in Long Beach California in the 80s ,I loved their music 👍🏽
Phil lynott stayed in the hotel I worked in 1978 I served him in the suite he was staying jn very quite and humble man
So sad!!! Another great musician gone to soon!!!! We miss you Phil!!!!
Best front man ever 🤘
Yes❤
I never knew he had a son!
No me neither I knew he had s daughter Sarah and also another daughter Kathleen cos thats my name,he sang 2 songs about them❤
RIP Philo ❤God Bless Ladd
Thanks 😊..
This is a wonderful thought of the man and the bad. Do you ever get over here to the U. S..?
You forgot the album Fighting which was the first album for both Scott and Brian R and which came before Jailbreak.
The dope got him.
I read that Lynott was a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix. Some accounts have him as trying to emulate Hendrix which some claim led to his downfall.
May he Rest in Peace and Rest in Power.🤘💪❤️🙏✝️👍💯
I am in my sixties . Huge fan of Thin Lizzy ❤ Phil used to ask female audience members if they had a little Irish in them ? Then he would offer to put a bit of Irish in to them 😂 The good old days 😂
Aww thank you so much for sharing your comment 🥰 I've heard Phil was a lovely man in person, and had a great sense of humor too by the sounds! 😅
Legends Never Die.
Saw them twice
1977 Tower Theatre w/tom Petty
1980 Emerald City Snowy White replaced Brian Robertson
Any photos or tickets?
Thin Lizzy had that twin guitar attack. They have the crunchiest peel sessions I've ever heard (the damned and birthday party are 2nd and third)
I saw their performance on you tubes " the midnight special" . Pretty cool.
Life / Live was better IMO than Live and Dangerous. Life has some really great rock music. Gorham, Moore and Robertson were just so good.
The track mentioned on Johnny Thunders' "So Alone" featured Lynott, Thunders & Humble Pie's Steve Marriott each handling a verse on "Daddy Rollin' Stone." Imagine the chemical indulgence that occurred during those sessions!! I'm loaded just thinking about it!😆
This is sad 😢 !
I love how Chas Chandler complained about Phil Lynott’s stage presence. When you see footage of Chas in The Animals, he looks like a drugged housewife in a suit 2 sizes too small. His big ‘move’ is a forced smile. Physician heal thyself!
Not forgetting Alan Price's rip-off antics regarding the musical rights to 'House Of The Rising Sun' (A _Traditional_ song).
None of the other members of The Animals received a penny in royalties. Shame ... Is that the 'Price' of him?
First concert i ever seen they were touring with journey in st louis when i was 14
Lynott. Pronounced "Lie-Not"! As pronounced by his mum many times!
