Overall this is a nice device- much better display than the Dell Inspiron 7000 gaming laptop I looked at a few weeks ago. It also has a faster GPU but costs a little bit more as a result (about a $50 premium).
I'm very pleased with the performance here especially given how performance is in line with desktop versions of the card I reviewed earlier this year.

The Y720 is more tempting but it's over 50% more expensive.

catasyou the Y520 is good at cooling. Only the right side of your keyboard will become warm. Thats good because you but your fingers at the WASD keys.
Y720 is the better choice.

Lon.TV your video review on laptop is the best
I love the balance that Lenovo is striking here between performance and portability (and unlike the new dell 7000 gaming, DIDN'T sacrifice the IPS screen quality in order to hit their target price). In David Lee's video review, he mentions that this uses a more basic cooling/heat pipe configuration where the GPU heat has to cross the CPU to reach the sink/fan. I wonder, do you think that will matter in the long run as far as heat/throttling/longevity are concerned? Now if only this and the Inspiron would have a love-child with the best of both...

Hey Lon, as you review budget laptops and 2 in 1 a lot, I hope you do a comparison video and pick the best among it. It would be good right? I trust your opinion and recommendation with it comes to laptops that's why I watch most of your videos.
I unfortunately don't have the brand relationships to get a wide swath of available products so I am not comfortable making a 'best' recommendation when I haven't tested all of the major competitors. I also don't keep these very long so head-to-head comparisons are not possible.

I have the Y520 with a i7, 1060 3gb , 16 gb ram, 256 ssd, runs like a beast for 1100$ . If you look at other gaming laptops with a 1060 they’re most likely 1350$+

Hello Lon. I'm looking for a low cost, thin ultrabook that runs something like Ubuntu. What can you recommend?
Keith Keller While I'm not Lon, I can provide some insight. I've never seen an off the shelf Ultrabook running a Linux distribution, but they may exist in some obscure computer shop if you can find one. However, there are eBay sellers that sell Ultrabooks without their windows licence, and you could buy one and load Linux onto it. Since you didn't provide a budget, I would recommend the Dell XPS line (anything from 2015+ will be just fine as not much has changed since then), HP Spectre (previous generation, not newest), and the Thinkpad Yoga line from Lenovo.
I recommend a chromebook if ur ganna run ubuntu. There are very well built ones for low cost.
Tyler A You dont see it because Ultrabook is an Intel badge for notebooks meeting certain requirements. Things like having an i7, tounchscreen, having a battery life that lasts long...
Dell XPS line has a "Developer Edition" that comes with Ubuntu preloaded. So the Dell XPS line has great linux support.

Hey dude, i am considering getting the same model you have mentioned. Did you get it ? And if so how is it running in terms of overall performance and durability.
Im thing of buying i5 7300 hq version. I study architecture and I am constantly on the move (this is why I need laptop). How would this laptop operate with 3D modeling and rendering? I use programs such as Rhino 5, Grasshoper, Maya, Autocad, Archicad, Photoshop... I would off course upgrade ram to 16 gb.

not bad laptop but Lenovo are good brands though, I got the Dell 7567 (1080P, 1050Ti, i7-7700HQ) model and even though the TN panel gets bad viewing angles and poor colors but it's okay and gets the job done while looking at the screen head on, I upgraded the storage on my laptop to a Samsung 960 Evo 1TB M.2 SSD (Bios Version 1.0.5 in AHCI Mode is required to support the SSD)

Dell now offers a 1080p IPS option on the 7567. Last time I looked at the configuration site you should be able to get a 1050ti model with IPS screen for as low as $829.
I can't believe what you can get on a laptop for 800 bucks these days. These things used to be so far out of reach if you wanted to game. Even then they'd burn themselves up

Hi! I am looking to buy this laptop for abour 1 month. Since it is out of my budget a bit, I really wanna be sure it will make me satisfied. I am architecture student so i need good gpu speed and many cpr threads along with the ssd and ram. so, lenovo y520 i7 + 1050ti suits me perfectly with a best price. ONLY thing I see on internet as disadvantage is cooling system, ppl keep saying it is 'old architecture' and 'not good enogh'. I just wanna be sure I wont experience freezing and processing slowed down after a few hours. So, any recomendation on that? Is it really 'that bad' ? + I dont like design but function>form ^^ :D

the cooling system is about a 2015 one it is decent it does the job not too loud and it doesnt get too hot if your going to be using the CPU and GPU on 100% i sugest enabling extreme cooling through Lenovo nerve sense
Overall : You wont be experiencing freezing or slowing down you might need to enable extreme cooling if your going to be using the GPU and CPU for 100%
my CAD programs can't do that so it should be good. +standing support with additional fans could be usefull
Vedran Roljić it's totally more than this notebook needs for cooling. Just Cause 3 for 5hours no prob on bed.

TychoHD Normal use 4 hours and gaming 45 mins to one hour
Hopefully your school has power outlets. Also, getting a tiny 20k milliamp portable battery pack to charge your phone/comp may help

If you want a gaming laptop NOW this is for you but I would highly recommend waiting for the GTX 11 series to come out as this is already getting old. as shown in the past the new series is always a BIG boost in performance

ours is 2GB graphic card, 4GB ram and GTX 1050 for 779 USD
while the other version (as in the video) has 4GB graphic card, 8GB ram and GTX 1050ti for 849 USD

i have this very same laptop mines a piece of junk :( dead pixels after 3 months the battery says its charge bt is dead the right click on track pad is already getting worn down and blue tooth has stopped working. and lenovo wont fix it they say i void the warranty when i had the ram upgraded and it was by a professional

Pickup a refurbished/recertified BASE model Alienware R3 from the Dell Outlet for ~$1000. That's what I did, and couldn't be happier. You get the same CPU/GPU as these budget gamers, but all the premium features of a higher class laptop (build quality, better screen, better cooling, bigger battery, nicer keyboard and trackpad, RGB). Plus you can customize/upgrade the RAM and HDD/SSD later with exactly what you want!
The 15 inch R3 seems to start at 1,300 in the refurb store right now. Gotta go down to the R2 to hit that price point, unless you go down to a 13 inch display.
