Ported Husqvarna 359 - custom exhaust / muffler mod

  • Husqvarna 359 factory piston and cylinder that has been ported. Not taking credit, just showing what this type of exhaust can do. Not my design. Saw it a number of years ago on Buckin' Billy Ray Smith's youtube channel on his hotrod 372xpw. His falling partner "Bearclaw" designed it from what I understand. I decided it ran so well, I had to make one myself. Obviously not identical, but similar in design. When an "old timer" suggests something or has something that works well......I take heed. Case in point, this turned into a different saw with this exhaust system from the stock setup.

    I modded my 359 quite some years ago and it still runs strong. Besides the porting and muffler mods, tossing the base gasket (might have milled the base I can't recall), I also lightened the piston. A circle clip broke or got tossed out and put a very narrow deep score up the cylinder wall that surprising enough the repair with JB Weld still seems to be holding. I would have thought that with the size of your muffler openings, you would have a problem idling with the chain not moving. Nice saw that you have there.

      Thank you. They're strong runners that's for sure. Nice work on yours! It's amazing sometimes what "fixes" will hold up, if people are willing to put in the time and/or effort. Yeah, I've never had even the slightest issue with this muffler installed. Carburetor needed a significant amount of retuning, but that's it.

      They're one of the most underrated/overlooked saws in my opinion. With a simple muffler mod they're respectable. Decide to ditch a base gasket or do some milling and porting and they're down right astonishing for 60cc.

      Absolutely. And pretty easy even for novice to do. Biggest gains are in smoothing cylinder transfers to match case and cleaning out the transfer covers. Can't believe husky left so much on the table with this saw, guess they didn't want it to outrun the 357xp.

    28" bar with skip? looks sick man, nice mods! I love my 359, but it doesn't love me with those dogs and a full comp 20". What do you have mounted on the bottom of the inner dog?

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      24" it has skip on it in the video, but I run skip and full comp (skip is less to file when I whack metal haha) ...... just depends on what's sharp at the time ;) the gray "cylindrical" thing is a chain catch in case it throws a chain. The strait piece that runs down to the bottom dog area is a piece of aluminum (field fix) to support the anti-vibe tank mount, as the case is broken out in that area. They're a little anemic when stock, but take great to mods..... whether minor or advanced.

      @@samishsawworks5870 Thanks for the quick reply! I can't help but marvel at the extra power out of your saw. Mine is made in 2004 just before the XP's came about. To this day has never let me down but isn't as powerful as yours. I did put a west coast muffler on it, it is baffled but no spark arrestor. It did pep up a bit as it is louder but definitely runs better/stronger. You got a hell of a saw there. I think if I ever manage to kill this thing I'll get an OEM head and have it ported, you really can't beat the power to weight ratio and oil and gas capacity of these mid size saws.

  • @joedirte6476
    @joedirte6476 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was watching Tinmans video where he was saying having some back pressure/vacuum in the muffler is necessary for proper function. On Buckin's and your custom exhausts it looks like it's pretty much straight piped. Are there any internal baffles/chambers creating back pressure or is more or less just wide open?

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's pretty much just wide open, no internal baffles. The exhaust does have to make a 90° turn and head "up" before it can exit, so it's got a little more back pressure than just a straight shot out the front.

    How far did you go with the ports?
    Did you change the port timing? The spark timing?
    The cylinder of my 359 is sitting next to the phone as i type this... I'm not sure if i should take some more out before putting it back together.
    So far it has a stock intake, mild work on the bottom of the transfers, pulled back about 1 1/2mm in the center rounded off on the case side and rolled into the transfer covers but not enough to cut into the original transfer cover gasket.
    The divider tapered from a knife edge to stock where the port turns in.
    Stock transfer ports.
    Exhaust widened a little... about 30mm at its narrowest just inside the port.
    Work saw in hardwood 18" bar.
    I just can't decide if i should call it done or push for a little more...
    Of course it is getting a gasket delete and a muffler mod to 85% of the exhaust port.

      Same saw in that video, just with a regular dual port muffler instead. Sounds like you're on the right track to me. Similar work on the transfers as to what I did. I changed timing on exhaust, intake, and ignition. That being said you'll have a great saw just the way you have it now combined with the gasket delete & muffler mod. I ran mine with just a muffler mod and Gasket delete for a long time. It produces a good all-around work saw. I really think you'll be pleasantly surprised. There's more on the table for sure, but I'd run it the way you have planned to finish it up now. You can always go back in later, but I'll tell ya now......... you won't need too. You have a great recipe going there for a solid saw. Post up a video when it's all together. These 359s don't get enough praise ;)

      It is like you turn on a tap the way the chips pour out of the saw. You must have the chain sharpening business down.
      This is my first saw so that segment of learning is still to come.
      Some people must like these saws. I was offered this saw but had no idea what size it was (my friends run stihls and i have been using thier saws). when i typed "husqvana 359" into google it came up with "husqvarna 359 mods" as the 2nd option. Needless to say it was a steep and slippery slope... i knew people modified saws for racing but had no idea they modified work saws too. as a long time wannabe hot rodder of all things mechanical, fate was sealed.

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whatnowstinky I love it! I couldn't agree more that it's a slippery slope, but it's a fun one! Once you run a modified work saw every stock saw will feel like a turd haha. For a first saw you will be VERY happy with the way you're building it. Glad you're jumping in with both feet! Lucky to have been offered your saw. Enjoy and keep up the good work!
      P.s. You probably already know, but just in case, the 357xp is the "pro" version of the 359 (although I'd consider the 359 a pro saw construction) all parts interchange between the two. The 357xp has a 46mm piston and cylinder instead of 47mm. The 357xp cylinder has a slightly different port map and the 357xp has crank stuffers.
      Other than that they're exactly the same saws/chassis.

      No problem. Not sure how the adhesive would survive in constant high temp/heat environments, but here in the Northwest, it provides a little extra grip on the rainy snotty days.

      Where you get that muffler from? I got a 455 and 460 rancher I’d like to squeeze more power out of

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@voxpopuli905 It's a muffler, or more so pipe I guess, that I made. It's a little excessive, but fun. It usually just runs a factory muffler with two ports. Those 455/460 wake right up with a second outlet in the muffler. I've had fairly good luck on stock saws just prying up the factory deflector, opening up the stock outlet and then bending the deflector back down. Keeps everything looking factory.

    • @voxpopuli905
      @voxpopuli905 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ben Hall I’m gonna do that for sure. I’m under the sneakin suspicion the new 460 is the same as the 455, with just an increase in bore. I gotta do a little digging into the specs and dimensions cuz to the naked eye it appears the cylinder for 460 may actually mount up to 455. If so I’ll be getting a top end for that little saw and further tweaking will be done while it’s torn down.
      I also got a Stihl 064 that’s in great shape and a Echo 670 during that short time they were grey instead of a red color. So I have no shortage of decent saws. But it would be fun to make that little saw kick ass

      Here’s something else I didn’t realize till recently is that they haven’t used reed valves in saws for quite a long time. I never knew that.
