Snap Weights for Trolling Crankbaits - Walleye Fishing

- We go into detail on how to use snap weights, specifically the Cabela's brand Clip on Snap Weights, as we troll Lake Sakakawea for late summer walleyes.
It appears they have discontinued making the Cabelas's brand weights, but this is basically the same with any snap weight.
You want to troll at the speed you plan to troll at, and then release the weight to the bottom. Then you can reel up accordingly to get the crankbait off the bottom.

This is the first video I’ve found that actually explains how to determine the depth your at while trolling with anything other than bottom bouncers. Thanks for the tips
Exactly what I needed....just as described!!
Good explanation! Thank you
Informative video brother! Thanks!
I'm gonna try snap weights for salmon trolling. Didn't even know those were a thing
Great video thank you!!
What type of line do you prefer? Also how fast are you moving? Thanks, great vid!
I always use Power Pro...thinnest and strongest. I'm usually trolling around 2 mph, give or take...
JUST BOUGHT SOME CABELAS SNAP WEIGHT HOLDERS A WEEK AGO 9/1/2023 ALSO ON LINE.
Great tip
Thanks! They just make it easy to get baits deep...
nice stuff bro
What rods do you prefer for this type of trolling with the added weight? Good video, thanks.
I use all Scheels trolling rods, to be honest.
Does a diving crankbait, lets say a #9 shad rap which goes down to 20' and I put on a 3 or 4oz snap weight on. Can I get that down to 30 or 40'? Want to try this method for spring salmon! Thanks!
Of course. You can run any crankbait at any depth with snap weights.
A 9 shad rap with a 2 oz snap weight, let 50 feet out, clip weight to line let out 90 more feet. Clip on planer board and let out to desired distance from boat. This will get you 32 feet down at 2 mph
Those snap weights break in colder weather because the plastic part is very brittle
Good to know. Thanks
HOW COME NO ONE ELSE AGREES WITH YOU?
@@DEVILDOG1964 No one disagreed
@@BBBYpsi EXACTLY NO AGREED WITH YOU OR SAID YAH I'VE HAD THAT PROBLEM TOO.
@DEVILDOG1964 I fish the walleye capital of the world on lake erie and other great lakes for other fish. Most people use dipsy divers or jet divers. The other thing is bottom bouncers, or deep divers. But when you get into the cold weather, those things are not good to use.
Whats speed are you trolling while using the weight?
@@tonylarosa1415 all over from 1.3 to 3.3
I’m new at this type of fishing and a bit confused, are you at 61’, 28’ or 49’? How do you know where to put the weight on the line to get to a certain depth? What is the fish are in the water column, say 20’, where do you put the weight and how much line do you set out?
Hey Brian. Let's say you're in 20 feet of water and we'll use that scenario from there. First, make sure you're trolling the speed you intend on trolling so it's moving at the speed you expect. Then let out the line til it hit's bottom. I "thumb" the line to make sure it doesn't FLY OUT of the spool. Then you can adjust accordingly off the bottom. There's an indepth tutorial that's listed in the "See More" section of the video description. I'd read that too. Also, don't forget to subscribe for more videos like this! :-)
So he let out the first 21 ft. Then when the sinker hit bottom his counter hit 40. So add the two = 61 ft. Lol
What if I went 5 ft from worm harness, that should work fine, what do you think?
If that's the case, you'll be fighting the fish AND the weight to the net. My 2 cents
@@NodakOutdoors I was just playing dumb, to see what the dude said, I do it all the time, just like cattail bottom bouncing, just a quick snap on above swivel and a 4 ft leader your of to the race's 👊enjoy my man if you try it😉
Is that winnebago?
Lake Sakakawea
What rod holders r those
Folbes
FOLBE'S - sorry, not sure how I missed this comment.
No problem man
How fast do you go and do you use your motor or trolling motor?
USUALLY, around 2 mph, give or take. Sometimes slow, sometimes fast....depends on their mood. I only use my kicker along with my bow mount to troll.
Thanks have a great day
What brand rod holders are you using?
These were Folbe rod holders
ok so does the dive curve become non existant now that the sanp weight is so close? I was using a 2 oz snap weight and trying to guess where she would land out i was in 40 feet of water and the fish were sitting at 28 feet i was catching , but id like to refine, pease advise? thanks very much for you time
Good question. Not a ton, but a deep diving crank will need a tad less line than a shallow diving crank. We're not talking much though...
@@ReviewYourGear so do i figure out the dive curve for 50 feet like from the weight to the hook sorta thing
@@trevordavies3030 I typically clip mine 21 to 25 feet from the lure. Far enough from spooking fish and enough line to allow clip removal safely without putting pressure on the fish. Let out line until the line hits the bottom. A couple reels and you're usually set.
@@ReviewYourGear Yes I get that for the fish near the bottom but lets say im in 43 feet of water and the big gurls are at 28 and 30 , how is the best method to target those fish please? thanks for your patience and time with me :)
@trevor Davies
Trevor there is an app put out called precision trolling data which will list your lure and depth it will run and whatever speed you input with the weighted line calculator as an option. HTH
NO SHIT YOU WANT ALL OF THEM AT DIFFERENT DEPTS ..USE INLINE SINKERS IE USE 3TO 4 OUNCE BOTTOM BOUNCE NEXT TO THE BOAT APRROX 65 70 FT IN 34 FT OF WATER BACK RODS USE 1 OUNCE INLINES 75 TO 120 FEET OU\Y ..SPEED 1,5 ADUST LINE DUE TO SPEED
Dude, chill out.
You engrish not vahry well.
