I don't even wait for the dog days of summer to start trolling. Once that water hits the high 60's, I'm trolling stick baits with good success. One of the things that surprises me is why don't more people use downriggers especially when trolling deep or on deeper flats. Long lining, lead core, and dipsy divers works alright, but I've found the most consistent success trolling is with a downrigger. I get a lot of weird looks when I mention walleye fishing and downriggers in the same breath, but I tend to catch walleye in the summer when others aren't. One of the more underutilized tools when walleye fishing.

Thanks for the walleye tips. You didn't cover how to approach different depths. I want to fish a flat that is 20 feet deep. What considerations do I need to take into account to stay near the bottom at that type of depth?
MY DAD AND I HAVE CAUGHT HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF WALLEYES ON 12 POUND MONO. NOW USED BRAID WITH P LINE FLOROCLEAR LEADER CATCH EM NO PROBLEM. MONO STRETCH IS SO SMALL IT'S IMPERCEPTIBLE.
I'm a newbie, so loved all the practical tips! Looking forward to trying this out at Houghton Lake in 2 weeks.
