Great video! I would like to see you do a whole in depth series on trolling. Like basics including setting up a bigger spread i.e. 6 planer boards. How far to set each rod out before and after the boards to get a good spread. Bait selections. Clearing lines out of the way to fight fish. Different baits( cranks, spinners, lead core). Speed ranges for each. The possibilies are endless. I know you cover most of this in different videos. Bu putting them together in a series would be great! -boley 4 prez
I am learning sooo much from you! The old adage that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" (I'm 73) just isn't true! I fish Fort Peck, Sakakawea, Devils Lake, Canyon Ferry and a few Lakes in Minnesota! You are one of my go-to guys for training! Thanks a bunch!
More great content!...and in this one there was a ton of it on a multitude of different topics. What I personally love about a channel like this is even though I live on a 500 acre lake in Indiana, which is certainly different than the lakes in Wisconsin or Minnesota, I can take these same tips and tricks and tweak them again and again until the basic concept starts paying off. I love that process! Thanks for pointing me in the right directions Tom!!
I just got back from Canada last night after spending 9 days up there. I mostly trolled, but would have liked to try your techniques such as finding walleyes in deeper water. I can catch more fish trolling the rock shorelines in 7 to 15 feet of water than out in 40 feet (but don't catch the 30 inchers). Great video! Thanks Tom!
Top notch video on walleye trolling, one of the best I've ever seen. You put it all together in 30 minutes of video time. Great explanations and tutorial. You made a trolling clinic...WOW
Just wanted to say great video! The information that you shared is severely underrated in the fishing industry! Some other tips on trolling for those of us who may not have that kicker and have an older 1980s 2 smoke 80hp (this guy here) is to use a drift sock to slow the boat down when trolling, or I simply put the trolling motor in the water to be used as resistance to slow the boat down about .4 mph sometimes.
Headed back out to my spot today. 3 big plumpers. 20 to 24". All in 40 feet of water. Goes from 30 to 50 feet in no time. You can see it's layered rock on sonar. Smaller ones too. 10 to 17 inch in shallow portion. Thank you so much for your videos Tom! This is a structure that has even 80 foot depth between it and shoreline is like 200 feet away and is like a wall that drops. The Ottawa river is really special.
Thank you once again Mr. Boley. I appreciate the time out from actual fishing that these video's cost you. FWIW you are the only fishing guy I keep coming back to view. First time using planer boards this past July I caught my first 28" Walleye, lost a bigger one and caught a few in the eating size. All in about 15' of water. Great tips in here!
Just bought a Minn Koda Terrova 80bl 60” 18ft open aluminum Lund. Going to install next week. Although it took me a while to sell the wife on the idea, I’m sure it’s gonna be worth it. Thanks Tom for all you do..
First video I've seen on trolling. Never fished with planer boards. I like fishing with wire. If you've never heard of Buck Perry I'd advise you to run right out and get his book, "Spoonplugging, Your Guide to Lunker Catches." Depth and speed are all you need. Thanks
Me and my son love all your videos. If there is one thing that I would like to see it would be finding fish with nothing more than a old humminbird with no side imaging or live. While we have plans to purchase a similar boat set up like yours for now we don't. Thank you for all you do. Joe and Danny L.ehner
I’d love to see a more basic for the absolute beginner at trolling. Do you have a video that goes onto that super basic rig set up, speed, depth etc. I’d love to have all your set up but I have the basics boat a few rods and the will to go catch some fish.
Great Video I learned a lot. I have been trolling for years. I have only used planer boards with cranks and not spinners. So much with MN would let you use more than 1 line as I fish by myself. Hard to cover water with only 1 or 2 lines when I bring the wife.
Hey Tom, I make my own two hook crawler harnesses. Mainly used with a bottom bouncer but, we'll use it in a lot of different formats also. Usually about 2, 2& 1/2 ft mono leader, two hooks, anywhere from 5 to 8 beads, with the awesome spinner blades that are out there now. (Damn, the plades out there right now are freaking sick. Totally awesome). I should say, the beads and hooks are legit too! Anyways, fish Michigan waters mainly. I have a trip in late May, planned 😅for the UP. Any suggestions? Thanks man, enjoy your show always!😊
I kayak and can fish 1 rod at once and have a basic 4inch Garmin. if you could only troll a single lure at a time what would you troll in the morning and in the evening in deep water and in shallow water? Do you have any videos that go into what to look for on your fish finder. I fish a bay that is 70 feet deep in the middle and in 70 feet i mark fish from the very bottom all the way up to the top. I dont really know how to read which are walleye, which are perch, etc. How to tell perch from walleye would be great.
Great video details on trolling walleyes! Thanks to you, Monday I'm heading to Leech Lake for 4 days. Have a heavier 7ft rod with line counter reel and lead core line. Any point in using a planer board with MN 1 rod rules? Your Leech Lake video fishing humps was a great way to fish a new lake. Never much luck with crank baits so will use Lindy Rigs, 3/8 oz gold & silver jigs and Kalin swim baits. Anything else you would recommend?
Jim, we’re going to Leech in a couple weeks,Sept 4-11. I’ve always had good luck with Shad Raps. This time of year will try a little larger 7, 8,9. Shilohphil
The wife and I are going to Leach Lake the 1st week of September. What presentation is my best bet?? By the way I love your videos. Very informative and interesting. 👍👍🤔🤔
Hey Rob ,Wife and I will be up on Leech 1st week of September. Will troll as usual Shad Raps. Also live bait jig and bobber. Stay Safe, that lake can turn Mean!
Hey, Tom. I recency started trolling the Saginaw Bay in Michigan with my humminbird Helix 9 g4n and am having trouble locating gish. Im really discouraged. Any pointers?
Venting is not really recommended by biologists. It's probably better to weight them and get them back down fast. Venting pokes a hole that can lead to infection or death if it's in the wrong spot. It also doesn't get rid of other air in their organs and increases time out of the water. Both options can help a fish survive but there is no guarantee. The best option, don't catch and release in deep water.
wish i would have bought the telescopic rods...nice walleye as usual boss... you keep saying your in Wisconsin, so you can troll three lines. Three lines in every county? the whole state?
Just got back from Erie. Do you see fish having “the bends”? Many of the fish we caught had bulging eyes and swim bladders in their mouths etc. this was over 40’. I was surprised to see that issue that shallow. Thanks!
Any reason one could not use downriggers for constant depth control ? Minnesota only allows one rod per man. Seems it would do the same as your bottom bouncer setup.
My local lake has a 30 foot basin. I can't mark a fish anywhere in it. All the eyes seem staged from 9 to 12 feet along steep drops. It's just different down here.
Opposite up here, precambrian shield lake with the main basin anywhere from 100 to 160 feet deep. Water is clear and walleyes are often down 30 - 40 feet in the secondary basins (60 - 70 feet). Was marking BIG fish cruising 20 feet off the bottom at 80 feet - no lake trout in the lake so I'm guessing they are pike, will try gang-trolls off of downriggers for them. Cheers!
@@hankvana2149 that would be a blast. There's no water deeper than 50 feet (on the Mississippi river) near me. I bought a downrigger years back but soon realized they won't do me a bit of good here. Also our water is never comparably clear as yours.

Very informative Tom, your videos are top notch.
Thanks. Just getting into trolling, so this video couldn’t have come at a better time. TB the GOAT.
Thanks Tom I love your videos. You have taught me so much!
I enjoy your videos, especially the way you explain things so clearly. Wondering if you ever do anything with downrigger’s on the inland lakes.
I do not.... I don't fish deeper than 30. Lead core or snap weights normally get me deep enough

In Canada we can only have one line in at a time, where are you, and how many are you allowed at a time ?
Any suggestions as to weight size? I've read many different articles and everyone had different answers.
He runs 2oz bottom on inside rods and 1 oz bottom bouncers outside rods
you run botum boncer with planer baord? must be clean botum in the lake? your line don't get hookup?
How aggressive is the reel drag set while in the rod holder?
Great video great information
What rod holder are you using for trolling, they look nice and tall.
What kind of boat are you running in this video? I love it!!

So all I need is a bottom bouncer and bait/lure? Cool
Awesome video , thank you
Tom, great video, but do you you troll for bass as well ?
what manufacturer makes the raised rod holders?
How far back do you run the spinner from bottom bouncer or snap weight?
6-8ft but it’s not easy to manage..

Title: "How to Troll for walleye like a PRO!" actual quote from the end of the video "This video was meant to be more basic" HAHA. good video..
How do you get away with not reeling your shorter rods in with out tangling up?
Can you demonstrate how to vent a walleye?

Ray, you need to bring your non-fishing wife with a fishing license on-board. She reads a book, you fish with two lines.
Thanks for the info
Wait why did you lip that walleye can I try it- *gets bit*
I know there are a lot of variables in the depth of your bait but I was wondering if you have a secret equation to determine how deep your bait is?
Google bottom bouncer line depth, it will give you lengths and depths and different size of bottom bouncer
Thanks for the tip, I just printed a couple off. Will put in a plastic sleeve from a Office Supply or I might have plasticized as well.
Thanks for breaking that down. Learned a few techniques.
How often do you fish that lake?
Finally
WHAT BRAND AND SIZE PLANNER BOARD IS BEST TO GET FOR WALLEYE FISHING
He uses opti planer boards! I believe size large
Boom!
Do you find fish suspended only early and late or thru middle of day?
Mostly middle of day
Like a pro? You are a pro 😆
GOD IS GREAT , BEER IS GOOD , AND PEOPLE ARE CRAZY ! ,
when i go for walleye to catch and release i don't use live bait. i feel like there is a higher risk of the fish swallowing the hook.
you would be surprised by the amount you kill just by handling them, catch and release is not as effective as a lot of people think
Absolutely love your videos man but won’t lie I think your videos may sometimes be a little long for people trying to learn a new technique quick
