If your going to try that technique you might as well throw in “Bottom Bouncing Swimbaits” it’s another absolute weapon & no one really knows about it yet.

I'm a guide in Wyoming and I use this all the time! I usually will use #4 salmo Hornets or the shallow flicker shads!
That’s awesome, it’s a sweet technique. I’ll have to try those baits out sometime. I usually just use stick baits.
The Hornets ya probably have to reel up a bit off bottom because they dig / dive a bit more or no ?

@@Chasej-ne8be That’s what I figured. Those hornets are good baits & dive a lot for such a small bait. They work pretty good up here to just trolling 4’s, 4.5’s & 5.5’s just have to find a good trolling run.
How much weight for the bouncer? And ehat is an average speed?

Looks really good. I do know that walleye love a crankbait. I used to catch them on shore in the evening throwing cranks. I have heard that bottom bouncing a jerk bait can be dynamite and you demonstrated that. Gotta do it.
It’s a great technique. One to definitely throw at them especially when we get past that mid summer point & swinging towards fall.
Another one that’s great is “ bottom bouncing Swimbaits”. If you haven’t seen that technique I made this past fall then definitely check that one out. Basically showing walleye a more realistic bait vs a crank.. it’s also dynamite.

Don’t pump the fish when using cranks. You will lose way more this way. Just a steady reel is the key. Not saying ty won’t land any. Just saying the land rate success is proven to be lower if pumping the fish vs steady reel.

It’s a definite possibility that they’d go for it, probably just use a smaller crank bait & they’d chase it down.
Sweet video! I’m new to cranking for walleye and this might be a dumb question, but do you use your outboard to go 2-2.2 mph or do you just troll quickly with your trolling motor?
On my boat I use the bow mount trolling motor in conjunction with the MinnKota vantage transom mount. I have two separate battery systems @ 24v.
My outboard trolls @ 2.5 mph so I don’t really use it, I’d rather have the ability to adjust speed. 1.8-2.5 mph.
Depending on the duration of the fishing & waves pushing, a bow mount can do the job on its own.
Something to consider is battery capacity. Type 27 vs 31 & a high reserve capacity rating or going to lithium battery’s to help achieve the goal.
I felt like having the MinnKota vantage was an asset for numerous situations so I choose it over a kicker outboard motor. Basically just an incase I need it motor.
How fast do you "have" to be moving to keep from floating up?
1.2 MPH works really well, I try to stay around there. Might jump to 1.3-1.4mph.
Do you ever troll harnesses at the same time on other rods?
@@briancloutier2781I'll troll a bouncer with a crankbait off the port side middle, bouncer with a wormharness off the starboard bow, and then run ledcore with a crank off the starboard stern. I change everything up throughout the day, but this is how I start most of my trips.
Looks great . Do you have northerns to worry about ? Didn't see any steel leaders?
Not to many northerns in that body of water so I run a 12lb Flourocarbon leader. If I was somewhere in which I was worried about it I’d probably run a 15lb Flourocarbon Leader.
You can crush a lot of northerns using the same technique as well. Had that happen a few times, they chew up the CrankBaits pretty good though. Lol
Do you think the rapalas would hit bottom if I tried trolling this at about 3mph. I don’t have a trolling motor
With out an electric trolling motor it would be very challenging.
At 3 mph ish you’d pull the weight up way off bottom I’d assume even a 3 oz bouncer.
A couple options in my mind would be possibly an easy trolling plate on the main motor or a drift sock 36in hooked to the front nose of the boat to slow you down. But even at that I would think you’d be around 2.4-2.6mph but depends on the boat.
Then of course there’s the bill of the bait your bouncing and I’m sure I’d dig at the bottom at high speeds even with a 7 ft leader.
The plastic bills on some stick baits aren’t built the same either. Rapala husky jerks and original floaters are solid but smithwicks are pretty weak. The bigger deep diving crank baits are built to handle the high speeds & trolling.
If a person is looking for that crank bait presentation possibly gearing up with trolling rods, line counter reels and planner boards might be a better option with the speed of the boat. The Precision Trolling App on phones for crank bait depth go to 2.5 mph so you’d probably be a lot closer and have better success.
This is mostly a cold water technique. Or to get a Rapala more than 10' down. In less than 10' there are much better crankbaits. You can also use a snap weight or trolling sinker. There is also a time and place for planner board. Even 95%+ of the top pros. Don't know when to take off the boards

I picked the technique up from Jon Thelen from fish ED & tried it yrs ago up here in Saskatchewan & it’s dynamite.
How fast were you moving/drifting?
I try to go 1.2 mph - 1.5mph. Play with the speed. Some times it’s just like pulling blades, a speed change like that can make a difference depending on the day.

So this technique holds the same basic principles as bottom bouncing spinner blades as far as depth & weights used.
Every angler has their own preferences of what they like. The best answer is heavy enough that you can feel bottom.
This is my general preference with remaining straight down beside you & at most 45deg backwards.
My preference
10ft or less - 5/8 to 1 oz
10-15ft - 1oz - 1 1/2 oz
15ft- 25ft- 1 1/2 - 2 oz
25-30ft - 2oz -2 1/2oz
30-50ft - 3 oz
In this video I was using 3 oz bottom bouncers. I like to make sure I’m right on bottom.

You just using a trolling motor correct I think I can get my gas motor at 1.5 will it spook thm
Yes I’m just using an electric bow mount trolling motor. It all depends how deep your fishing. Anything @ or under 12 -13 ft you’ll spook them. If u fish deeper you’ll be alright.

Walleye was caught Aug 26 2020 & Released Lake Diefenbaker.
Tagging info & Story of Walleye 5153.
Saskatchewan Sport Research
Walleye 5153 was tagged on May 25, 2019 as part of the Diefenbaker Walleye Classic tournament; 457 days elapsed between captures. Our records show almost the same measurements as yours...we got 69 cm and 2820 grams (6.2 lbs). So this fish hasn't changed in either length or mass since it was last caught. Perhaps not that surprising given that it is already fairly large. It was released from the marina area in Elbow Harbor; it was showing some signs of livewell stress at that time. It also had a mild injury to its mouth from hooking / dehooking. Great to know that this nice fish made it, and is still out there!

That video was end of August so I was fishing a few mid lake humps.

@@surgeoutdoorsangling Oh, okay. I see, they are already made that way. I thought you bought a net and connect it to a pool pole because that pole folds up just like a pool pole! I'm looking for a net that has at least a 10' handle on it so that I can scoop up the fish on a high wall where I fish at that is located just downstream from a dam.

It’s a dandy technique & when their chewing on it it’s crazy.
It's especially cool for a guy like me who has a small boat with super limited space. I don't have the planer boards and big expensive trolling rods, so this will hopefully be a good alternative.
@@walleyeonabudget2641 it’s a great alternative, I like using the Rapala original floater & husky jerk baits as well as the Smithwick floating rattling rouge, those would be my favourites but other baits work as well.
How deep are you fishing?
25-45ft Each area was different depending on what the fish were doing. Running the ledge or pushing on top.
These cranks have to be floating?
I think floating will work the best but I’ve used Rapala Husky Jerks & they are suspending baits. They work as well. Because your behind a bottom bouncer floating baits just give you that buoyancy to keep you off bottom when the baits plastic bill pulls it down. If a person had baits that dig or dive more then going to a 3-way swivel & setting a dropper length would be better.
@@surgeoutdoorsangling I bought a bunch of cranks that dive because I didn't know I could troll with cranks. I'd like to use then. Most of them advertise diving from 9-11 ft and some dive down to 19 ft. If I use a bottom bouncer will these just dig into the ground?
@@bad_vaporizer yes those will most certainly dig into the ground. What you’ll want to do with those is get the Precision Trolling App from your smart phone App Store, purchase the lures & models that you own from the app. Then the app gives you depths & line length & speed to troll with them & have correct depths to run. Just need a trolling rod with a line counter reel & some structure, flats or humps to troll over.
The lures I use for bottom bouncing are The Smithwick Floating Rattling Rogue Model ARB dive depth 2-6ft 4 1/2 inch bait, Rapala Original Floater F-11 dive depth 4-6ft 4 3/8 inch bait, Rapala Husky Jerk dive depth 4-8 ft 4 inch or 4 3/4 inch bait the HJ10 or HJ12. I pull them with a 7ft leader behind the bottom bouncer. They will catch you fish doing this technique, greens, blues, yellows, pinks, purples ect any walleye colors.

Should be a Rap Original Floater F-11. But the Blue Chrome was a husky Jerk I guess I missed that, which will also work just run a little deeper cuz of suspending.

Yup, I took the tag info & gave it to Sask government. They told me the prior info, was caught the yr prior in a tournament it wasn’t looking good so they tagged it. It made it. I caught it & it was released.

3oz bottom bouncer in deep water, I don’t loose fish cuz that’s what a rod and drag is for. You probably would loose them if you horse them in.
I have patience & I don’t loose walleye.
@@surgeoutdoorsangling I agree losing fish sucks but I don't lose fish either, I adjust the drag so that I'm always reeling in more than the fish is taking, quicky and effectively. I have a pet cemetery at home of deer, moose, black bears and a variety of fish too. I don't horse the fish in either 👍
So you think I was fishing shallow or something where they should of came up to the surface fast or what? How deep was I fishing?

Same as when your bouncing blade 1.2-1.5 mph , depth where ever you mark fish and decide to fish them.
