John Le Mesurier born John Elton Le Mesurier Halliley; 5 April 1912 - 15 November 1983) was an English actor. He is perhaps best remembered for his comedic role as Sergeant Arthur Wilson in the BBC television situation comedy Dad's Army (1968-1977).

A documentary I watched on him, all that knew him said what a gentle man he was, how he self doubted himself, and how he adored his wife. He sounds like a true gentleman.

He was, I read his biography, His life in general was chaotic, made worse by his apparent indifference to the way he was treated. He was, it seemed, impossible to affend, although beneath that exterior, he clearly was, but 'didn't want to make a fuss'.

For those who haven't heard this..
Every minute someone leaves the world behind
We are all in the same line without knowing
How many people are before us we don't know
We can't move to the back of the line
Can't step out of the line
    Can't avoid this line
However.... While we wait, let's make every single moment count 😊😊 love to all 💗

I was travelling home from Broadstairs in 1981 and saw him on Ramsgate train platform. I think he was a shy man in real life, he saw me and the friend I was travelling home with and walked right down to the end of the platform, he definitely didn’t want to be disturbed by two teenage girls, we left him to himself, a very fine actor.

A true gentleman... what Hattie put him through must have been awful, but he soldiered on like the true gentleman he was. Hattie later found out how shallow her fling was and must have really regretted how she treated him. So sad.

I read about them many years ago, Hatti admitted that she loved intimacy and he had loads of reasons not to stay with her, but he loved her to the moon and back as the saying goes, he truly did which says a lot about his personality. R.I.P. John.

A wonderful man who was so kind!! To the point Hattie Jackes moved her lover into their own home.Which most people would not tolerate. This has always intrigued myself. The Dad's Army museum in Thetford is amazing to see and visit.Captain Mainwaring statue and the other props are in the museum.

Can you imagine any other man doing that?
He made the public think he was the one who had the affair not Hattie. That could have ruined his career.
My Dad met him a few times as they frequented the same places in London. He said he was a lovely man, and very quietly spoken.
I was shocked when it came out about Hattie. She was a sex kitten!
One of their sons died not long ago also.
      Thank you ❤

    1983 !
Once again an OMG moment as you "visit" someone that was central to my growing up, but whom I had no idea had gone sooooooo long ago.
Now going to look up where Hattie is buried as always sad to see people alone in eternity even if their marriage had become "open" according to the press.
Sad that his son had such a short life, but "nice" to see he was interred with his father. Family is all that matters at the end of the day, no matter how much "fame" one has in life.

    He was always working.
He got some amazing gigs - he's in Ben Hur playing a surgeon at the end of the Chariot Race.
His career was all "rather lovely" for his audience. Thank you John. Rest in peace.

Loved the sketch In Dads Army in which Arthur Lowes character was sporting a new wig....John was trying to say something nice about it but his laughter became progressively louder until he admitted that the wig was awful! Loved this sketch and many others delivered so hilariously by John....apparently at the end he said "it's all been rather lovely"....doubtless said with his own inimitable style...Rest in Peace John you were a true gent!!

Hi Paul. Looking forward to this one. A little suggestion for a future programme if I may. Mike Hailwood a George Medal holder, a famous motor cycle and F1 racer who was not killed on the track but died in 1981 along with his 9 year old daughter following a road collision caused by a careless lorry driver. Mike and his daughter are buried at the St. Mary Magdalene Church graveyard at Tanworth in Arden .A very sad case. This is a great series Paul which is always done respectfully. Thank you for all that you do.

      @EBO647 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@TheTimmyH He was indeed Tim .So sad that he lost his life on the road when he survived on the track whilst competing at the very highest level. Added to his talent on the track he was an exceptionally brave man who was awarded the George Medal for rescuing a fellow driver from a blazing car. Many younger viewers will probably not know what an amazing man Mike Hailwood was and if Paul manages to get to the final resting place of Mike and his daughter I am sure that he will produce a suitable tribute to a remarkable person.

There's footage of Hailwood on TH-cam rescuing Clay Regazzoni from his crashed and burning F1 car. Hailwood had a marshall spray him down with foam and water went back into the fire to save the unconcious Regazzoni.

@@nathanbowers6364 A very brave man Nathan - his GM was well deserved. I am sure that many younger people will not know who Mike Hailwood was but if Paul could do one of his usual respectful tributes to Mike hopefully a whole new generation will learn more about him

Thank you Paul , another great story and video. I have read several books, biographies and autobiographies about John and I think he was his own best critic. In comparison to his peers and other actors before and later, John was a not a great actor; just a jobbing actor is a very accurate description . He did have a very sad life , much of it his own making. He gave a very good impersonation of someone who just couldn’t be bothered about life. His addiction to alcohol, nicotine and jazz music were his escapes from the mess he was in. I always got the feeling that no matter who or what he played, he just didn’t want to be doing it ! Personally, I enjoyed him much more on the radio . He had a great radio voice and much that he did was very funny and entertaining. However, he was still a great member of the best comedy series ever seen on television - it will never be equalled. Never forget his advice - “…do you think that’s wise? ….” 🤣

I love John Le Measurer in the Dads Army series , which I’m watching again for about
the 4th time. Thankful that it’s on You tube!.
I think John deserved a much bigger and better gravestone . Such a great actor. Thank you for your channel .
    Regards from New Zealand. 😊

My dad loved British comedy. I remember this from my early days. Always remember fondly dad’s laugh when he watched Dad’s Army and other iconic British comedies. Nice visit Paul. 🤙
