Anthony John Hancock (12 May 1924 - 25 June 1968) was an English comedian and actor.
High-profile during the 1950s and early 1960s, he had a major success with his BBC series Hancock's Half Hour, first broadcast on radio from 1954, then on television from 1956, in which he soon formed a strong professional and personal bond with comic actor Sid James

I went with my son two years ago to find Tony’s Resting place. He thought he’s wasn’t liked and that his career was finished. He was completely wrong. He was Dearly Loved, his show “HHHH HANCOCKS HALF HOUR” was compulsive listening and viewing. What was going through his mind at the time…..

I absolutely loved Tony Hancock. I enjoyed his TV appearances, but preferred the radio. Everyone who heard his sketch called "The Blood Donor" found it hilarious. My real favourite was about a plane mechanic sitting on the top of the aircraft as it took off. The conversation was hysterical and as it was on the radio, you could use your imagination to the full. RIP Tony.
A pint? That's very nearly an armful! Credit must really go to the scriptwriters. My dad was a huge Hancock and Goons fan. Laughter is essential.

My son took his own life too 2 and a half years ago, we can only imagine what dark places some people visit whilst suffering depression.
I've so many connections with this most respectful video...I'm from Birmingham but didn't realise that Tony died on my birthday, my son as a boy loved to watch my dad's dvds of Hancocks half hour and after his passing I watched "The Blood Doner" and can remember my sons comedic recitals as he knew it almost word for word perfectly.
Sometimes humour is used to mask deeper issues and if anyone ever finds themselves in that position please talk to those who care... thank you for for this buddy.

I was born on 25/6/69 in Stourbridge, I later as a young man emigrated to Perth Australia but now living back in the area briefly as I'm considering a move to North Wales.

@@Ashley_x_Smith Wales is so beautiful, when I lived in Birmingham we'd visit and stay at a cottage in Ponterwyd, it's situated about 10 miles from Aberystwyth, my ex husbands family owned the cottage. That's a life time ago now Ash. I returned home to Australia and I now live in a small hamlett on 4 and a half acres with my 3 cats and one llama. My birthday 25/6/52, so I'm your big sister. I have 3 children, twins Zach and Chelsea (33) and Cal 29. Chelsea lives in Western Australia, Chels' has been in the West now 13 years, the two boys live near me in Victoria. I think we have the best birthday because every 6 months we receive a gift., even if it's just a card. Take each day with tiny steps but don't forget Ash, Andrew is also walking with you and some day you'll feel his presence and other days he'll let you walk alone.
Absolutely outstanding once again Paul. Sorry you were freezing but we all appreciate what you do and we love sharing your adventures.

I was seven when Tony died and even in the playground at school his death was the main topic of conversation. I've been a fan since I was old enough to realise what really good comedy was. He's my comedy idol. I have his framed autograph in pride of place on my living room wall. I've been to his grave many times when as a London cabbie I based myself out of Heathrow for some years. Finding out that the legendary comedian was buried a 40 minute walk away was a revelation. As soon as I got a chance I was there with flowers. He's buried there because his brother who took possession of his ashes upon their return from Australia lived nearby. People criticised him for shedding Sid, Kenneth and later on Galton and Simpson but they don't realise that his most famous performances such as the iconic Blood Donor, Radio Ham, Lift, Bedsitter and Bowmans all came without his regular supporting cast.
He was a man who wanted perfection in his craft and wanted to be as he put it "international". He wanted to be a Hollywood star another Peter Sellers but when the chance came alcohol got in the way. The frustration of never achieving his aims and never really understanding that perfection is impossible tore at him. His chances of being the greatest of his generation was lost due to alcoholism and self analysis.
He finally realised that he was going nowhere, that he had cast off everything and everyone in his life so in a drab hotel in Australia he took what was as he saw it the only way out. If he could only have stayed off the drink......
I love him.

Loved Hancocks half hour...Tony Hancock. Kenneth Williams Syd James. Hattie Jaques and Bill Ker along with wonderful scripts from Galton and Simpson made it a unmissable show for its audience. Unfortunately going by what I've read Hancock was his own worse enemy...However. Still a very funny man and made his character believable. I know at one time when Tony was going through a bad patch Harry Secombe took over the main roll in a couple of episodes on the radio. Your a brave man Paul. Looked very cold that morning. That poor homeless man out in that cold. Thanks Paul.for all your hard work in researching these celebrity final resting places . Look forward to the next one. Thanx Tony Hancock for all the laughs..

I hate to see people sleep rough outside as well 😢 in this case even worse because of how cold you are saying it is. I can’t even imagine that type of cold 🥶 for 1 it is summer here and 2 winter where I live is not that cold. I haven’t used a heater for around 7 years now. I seriously don’t know how that person could have slept. You also mentioned Sid James, as my family used to love watching Bless This House here in Australia when I was younger, (I also have the show on DVD) I was wondering if you have been to his resting place. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
Oh I loved Sid James, he was my favourite male actor in the Carry On films and I too loved watching Bless this House.. these old shows should return and let our younger generations have fun watching Sid xx

I was only young, but I did like Tony Hancock and Sid James. So sad he had to leave this life so early 😢
I was born in 1953 but I do remember some of his stuff from the 60's.

A friend of mine knew him. We had to call at Eddies on the way to a gig, as my friend had to pick something up from him. He answered the door wearing a pair of slippers (not just slippers..😄) and made us both a cup of tea. He was a really nice guy!👍🏼

Members of the public have experienced several paranormal events/ghosts in that area.
One involving a bride & 2 of her 3 friends who died on a tragic car accident in the area on the night before her wedding.

Another great video Paul. Loved Tony Hancock but how sad an ending to his life. Hope the person sleeping out in this terrible cold is going to be okay. Shouldn't be happening in this day and age. Poor soul.

My dad was a paper boy in Lingfield, he used to deliver to Tony between 1964 to 1965.
Loved the comedy film the Rebel when he carved the statue Aphrodite by the water hole hehe and had it transported to France and it got knocked into the sea and desolved in water and got it's head knocked off hehe so funny 🤣🤣🤣 lol 😂Thank you Paul your friend Rodney 🙂🙏
The Television biopic is a good insight showing how brilliant and funny he was but also his troubled dark side especially when fueled with alcohol.
The dinner table scene is an absolute shocker.

Yep I have 'Hancock's Half Hour' BBC (1956-1960), 'Hancock' BBC (1961), 'The Punch & Judy Man' film (1962), 'The Rebel' film (1961). And The complete script for Ray Galton and Alan Simpson's film 'The Day Off' starring Hancock, which was written but never filmed.

Such a sad ending for Tony Hancock , his radio shows were brilliant, I called them the radio versions of The Carry Ons...
There are a couple of wall plaques to Tony here in Bournemouth put up by the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society one at the Hotel Celebrity (used to be the Durston Court Hotel) in Gervis Road which was Tony’s childhood home and one at the Avon Social Club in Avon Road Bournemouth where Tony did his first professional appearances

Comedy's dark side revealed yet again.
People that have brought so much laughter and joy to our lives, have perhaps been living in torment far deeper than we could ever know.
I perhaps felt compelled to mention the homeless person.
I believe we are all tested at times, by unexpected situations sometimes confronting.
For me personally much like this event, a fellow human begging, or injured or suffering a stress related moment.
I have walked away, later to realise I should have, at minimum stopped and offered, water, food help, or just a kind word.
And then thought to myself, that was a test and I failed.
I promised myself this would not happen again.
It's not what we do, it's what we don't do that haunts us.

He was a comedic genius as was alot back then likes of sid James, John le mesurier etc but Tony I think didn't realise it and self doubting which is the depression(I unfortunately know only too well) but think there is help where as was none back then sadly 😥 rip Tony and with his beloved mother. Also thankyou Paul on a very dark and bitter cold one,that poor homeless person,sad times we are living in 😢

Tony Hancock was one of the best comedians of the 1950s/1960s. Hancock's Half Hour was compulsive viewing.
I grew up as a teenager in the nineties watching, amongst many other classic comedy shows, Tony Hancock on vhs thanks to my dad putting them on. It makes me feel a little bit superior in my pathetic little way that I was familiar with TH before the relatively recent renaissance of him in the 2000's.

It's sad that he took his own life at a comparatively young age, and that his mother outlived him. A shame he didn't realise that his eponymous radio and tv shows were team efforts; Galton and Simpson were brilliant writers and the supporting cast was very talented. Anyone watching or listening to old episodes of Hancock's Half Hour will find that the content is clean (there were strict rules on what could and couldn't be broadcast back then).
It's a tragic coincidence that Kenneth Williams also committed suicide (1988) and outlived _his_ own mother.
And you're right, Hancock's Half Hour is squeaky clean with immaculate language. There's no swearing and I don't recall much (if any of it) being sexually suggestive, unlike the later Carry On movies which featured much of the same people.

great video found this in 2008 but it was more overgrown then still a shame is right at edge of the grave yard i believe that Willy Rushton was told that he couldn't carry his ashes on the flight back from Australia so he booked another first class seat so that Tony's ashes didn't go in the hold but instead sat beside Willy for the whole flight back

I am a big fan of Tony Hancock and still listen to his radio shows almost every night. I am an insomniac and have a USB drive full of old British comedy shows plugged into my Internet radio for those many moments, when I can't sleep.

There's a brilliant radio play about Willy Rushton returning the Ashes. Worth a listen. I missed 'I think I've found it'. Good decision on the person sleeping. I always drop some money in an area they might find it. I don't judge on what they might do with it. I've been in that place.

Tony Hancock's story should be a salutary lesson in life generally, he could not get over the success of his co stars, and when left to his own devices it all went downhill, what he couldn’t see was it was a team effort, and he saw himself as the big star, afterall it was his name in the title, he needed the writers, Sid and Kenneth more than he was willing to accept. Without his team he was a lost soul.
I listen to his 50's radio shows. They are available on BBC sounds.

Tony was a brilliant comedian who was ruined by alcohol and his own ego. The decline started when he fired Galton and Simpson, who was responsible for many classic
Hancock skits. His one-man show at the Royal Festival Hall in 1966 makes for heartbreaking viewing. Clearly very nervous, his comic timing deserted him during the debacle
and he slowly declined into alcohol ruin afterward.
Remember him for "The Blood Donor" and his fabulous radio shows. RIP

in Italy there is a time visitor to go to the cemetery, when arrive the winter that change the time, it is from 7,30/ 8,00 until 16,30

Tony’s blue plaque in Queens gate gardens Kensington. Literally two minutes away Benny Hills plaque Queens Gate. Great laughs from both of them. When I walk past the flats I wonder,did they meet up for a chat ?. Thanks as ever Paul.
