I watched the entire series of Colditz when it was repeated on a Freeview channel about ten years ago and was pleasantly surprised when he turned up in it as an American captain in a jeep who came to tell the British C/O the SS in the town had fled. He was a very distinctive actor who never became a star in his own country but forged a decent career on this side of the pond. He told a great story that when he went back to the US in the early 70s t find work nobody knew who he was and he ended up as a painter and decorator for a while. He was putting up wallpaper I'm a hall while a family were watching TV. The programme happened to be UFO and they still didn't recognise him! It was then he decided to go back to the UK where at least he had a career as a readily available American for British productions even if sometimes they were just bit parts.
I met him as a child, I lived in the neighbouring village called Stockton and my uncle was doing some work on his house, my uncle gave him a lift to the airport and as a big fan of UFO and sci fi at a very young age my uncle let me go along with them. He was a really nice guy and it was a real thrill to meet him.
Loved his character in UFO Ed Straker Sad he passed 5 days after his close friend Michael Billington who played Paul Foster in UFO we just don’t get shows like Gerry Anderson’s anymore great actors very underrated thanks for this visit Paul great as always 👌😊
I remember the first time I saw Ed Bishop on UFO back when it was first shown on TV. My breath caught in my throat, I thought he was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. He was totally believable in any role he undertook and he lit up the screen with his personality. I agree with you - he deserved so much more recognition for his work.
Paul, you did a great job of telling others just how underrated Ed Bishop was during his life. I agree he should have been awarded for his talents as a brilliant actor. I was lucky enough to have been able to watch and hear him over many years. I hope he can Rehearse In Peace, with his beloved son by his side.
We Brits talk about the weather all the time. This is why. It rains, then it rains again and then it buckets down! And if it isn't raining, it will do in 5 mins time. Unless it is a heatwave which turns my soggy grass into a baked brown, rock hard desert. Great video Paul. Beautiful church, with an interesting organ and clearly loved by the community. Ed Bishop was in all those stage, tv and film items? I remember those eyes very clearly. Frightened the life out of me. Those Mysterons, with their flashing lights and booming voices were enough to scare the pants off a kid in the 60s. Captain Scarlett was so good. Who remembers his white de Lorien bat wing car?? Phenomenal vehicle that travelled at incredible speeds. Still got the Matchbox model. What a great body of work for an actor. Thanks Paul. RIP Ed. 🙂
Not sure who/what you mean about the white bat-wing doored DeLorean car. In CS the MSV (maximum security vehicle) was basically an armoured truck. Very big and heavy, or do you mean that Ed Bishop had a personal car he used to get around in?
@@obi-ron Yes he had a white DeLorean before most of us had ever heard of them. Can't remember if it was nuclear powered or not. Think Lady Penelope's pink Bentley but twice the size.
@@elisabethhopson5639 Think OP Talking about shadow mobiles, looked a bit De Lorien, but not the same car, there was a white and a metalic brown one. I was off to cub camp back in the early 70's, outside Orsett in Essex. Saw the brown one on a flatbed being moved to location, made our day, as it looked so cool.
Growing up in NZ in the late 60's and early 70's, my favorite TV series was UFO and started me down the Sci Fi path. Thanks for visiting his final resting place, somewhere that I had planned on visiting during a trip to the UK. I still have that theme tune on my phone. I look out my window at our country side on a beautiful morning, and an expected 25 degrees. 😊. Thanks for your on going work Paul.
Very distinguished with piercing eyes. Us 50 year old will always remember Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, UFO and Stingray. I've got signed items from both Shane Rimmer AND Gerry Anderson. Great video and thanks Paul.
U.F.O. was on Belgian TV in the early seventies in prime time on Saturdays. It was a groundbreaking top quality SF series. The catchy intro music by Barry Gray was world class. We watched on a black & white TV set, so we were surprised to discover the girls on Moon base had purple hair when we collected the bubble gum cards with pictures in full color. All boys, including myself had a big crush on Lt Ellis (Gabrielle Drake). Ed Bishop was an underrated actor. He perfectly played the role of Straker. Rest in peace Sir, and thank you for the wonderful memories.
I've lost count of the times I have watched these UFO repeats, and you realise that the two main characters, along with a few regulars are now dead. I remember the pilot of Skydiver played by the first and best Milk Tray man Gary Meyer, who I think is still alive. Thanks for another great video.
Love your sensitivity Paul, it's not really pissing down 80% of the time, we have some lovely hot spells. Great to hear Ed Bishops story, a face I knew well but a history I didn't so thank you for the exposure of this talented man. So sad his son lost his young life, a heavy burden to bear.
Thank you. Paul 👍🏻
Another super video Paul. Beautiful church and cemetery. A fantastic actor, he scared me when I was little, such piercing eyes! So sad about his son too. Thanks Paul 🤗 Xxx
UFO was a fascinating series at the time - nobody could work out whether it was produced for adult or children’s entertainment and scheduling it appropriately created a few headaches. My memory of Ed Bishop is exclusively associated with this sci fi series that I viewed as a child. Several of the cast members are now sadly deceased.
Just blew the dust off my UFO boxed set the other day and watched a couple of episodes. I was a tad well not shocked but bemused by the somewhat sexist angle it takes.. Especially camera angles trained on the bums of Moonbase Alpha babes at every opportunity and no end of suggestive innuendoes from male to female SHADO staff ... sort of thing you get in James Bond movies. And this was a kids' TV show ?!! Well it was in my day, at the tender age of 9 I was mesmerised by the series ( the UFOs and aliens that is not Moonbase babe bums - too young then to understand all that at that age) . Thought it was just standard Moonbase protocol ! Also a friend of mine now 40 has just discovered the series and is amazed at how avant garde the whole series was - another UFO convert. So did Gerry Anderson build in the sex appeal element to double the box office ? Appealing to both kids and dads at the same time ??!
@@martybee6701 I think the answer to your question is Yes. Remember Marina in Stingray? She was modelled on Ursula Andress…so UFO would be in keeping with the format but instead of puppets real people. I remember drooling over Gabrielle Drake…..a time now long gone but fondly remembered.
Hmmmm...makes you think what would Mary Whitehouse's take would be on all this 'filth' . Mind you Lt. Uhura's dress in the original Star Trek is shorter than short . No wonder Straker's aliens and Kirk's Klingons couldn't keep away ! One part I think Bishop could've clinched is the gaoler in Alien 3 when Sigourney lands on the prison planet !
UFO still resonates with me today. As a child it drew me in completely. There was something magical about that series. I've always thought about visiting his grave simply to pay homage to such an important figure. Sadly, almost all of the actors in that series have passed away. Ayshea is still going strong thankfully. I still remember her tv series as a child. I like your videos and these places you visit. There's nothing quite like a church in the beautiful English countryside for peace and quiet.
One of my all time favourite programmes UFO and the great Ed Bishop. Grew up with that and really got me into SciFi for a lifetime of enjoyment. Still watch it today and even have two original Dinky replicas of the Shado mobile and interceptor thay my parents bought me as a kid. Wonderful 😊
Yeah a church that's opened and a very lovely church indeed also a beautiful cemetery very idyllic. Thank you for another interesting video and for braving the rain and cold, Ed Bishop was a great actor, UFO was a fab series
loved ufo, a great series even today. the cast were all good but Ed Bishop was the best, those ice blue eyes were a winner. we were privilaged to have this american actor living here in our wet soggy england. shout out to his co star Michael Billington they were both really good. RIP Ed.
I remember ufo and he was the only one I remembered , I’m 59 now but still watch Gerry Anderson’s stuff , after all it imprinted on all of us as a kid , nice vid 👍

Another cracking episode Paul. I loved UFO but he's been in so many other things as well, even a James Bond film. Such a underrated actor who took the UK as his home for so many years. He died within a few days of Michael Billington, Colonel Foster in UFO. Much missed but always seen at the flick of the play button on the DVD player. Thanks Ed and thanks Paul for the memories ❤
Thank you for making this sensitive and well deserved tribute to Ed Bishop. I didn't realize how many roles he played apart from Cmdr Straker in UFO and as the voice of Captain Blue, both iconic and much loved series. He should have had more leading roles and I think could have been a fine narrator too. His intro for each Captain Scarlet episode was perfect for the show. Aha Stratford-on-Avon, now I know. I thought it would be Birmingham. Great video, I liked Edd Bishop in UFO, but I always thought he was English acting American. May he RIP. Thanks again Paul, brilliant work as per usual.
thanks for that one I was a big UFO fan. Love the peace sign on the grave. Sad that these people so beloved at the time, end up tucked away in a grave that nobody is aware of

Hi Paul, I really loved UFO and Captain Scarlet I totally agree with you Ed Bishop was very underrated as an actor. Looks like this church was tucked away from civilisation seems like its in the middle of nowhere. Great report Thank you.
Hi Paul, another top video from you. I loved the voice of this guy! Your footsteps when walking in the church reminded me of the footsteps in the opening credits to Captain Scarlet. Cheers. Mick.
Hi paul thanks for another fab show shame the weather was against you yet again yes I'm sure we all remember Ed Bishop as captain scarlet and your right he never got the credit he so much deserved but thanks for the memories Ed R.I.P
Thank you Paul. Loved Ed Bishop and all UFO cast even though I am too young really to watch original but love sci fi. I was always going to go down to Napton and find his grave myself so thanks for this.
i remember the man very well, he was a great actor, like you said didnt get the credit he so deserved. make sure you have a hot bath to warm you up, lots of love,
"Very underrated actor Ed!...thanks for this Paul👍....Happy memories from childhood!...loved Ed's voice!. Ed with blonde hair, could've been brother's with dear George Peppard"🕯️🥀🕊️🙏
Saw Paul what terrible weather you must be mad surprised you haven’t caught pneumonia you are a trooper thanks Paul great video get home and get warm 😊❤️
The church yard was a long walk from carpark but worth it to get into the church ! , I loved Ed Bishop in UFO , think it was the blonde hair , , I was really surprised to hear that he was born in the same year as my dad , which would make him 92 , once again learnt something from your videos . Thanks Paul as always for bringing this to us braving the elements too.
Another great video, Paul. I happen to love our rain because I swear no other country has so many different types! From the drizzle that's akin to walking through a wall of damp ghosts, to the fat globules of chunky water which one can almost walk between without getting wet, and all other varieties in-between; I love them all. *Thinks* Actually, no. I'm not quite so keen on the "sudden deluge when least expected," where you go from dry to sodden in 2 seconds flat. That's just Mother Nature being rude!
Hi Paul. Last week I thought about suggesting a grave you could probably visit one day. So I couldn't believe it when you're latest video was the very one. It's one that I have been wanting to go to myself. I have a good friend that lives in Priors Marston which is the next village to Napton. Caroline Bradley the former international show jumper is buried in Priors Marston. Good video as ever.
Hi Paul, cannot believe you found Ed Bishop! I thought he was buried in the States. I absolutely loved him in UFO, as a kid I watched the opening credits like a hawk and that made me want to fly. Gerry Anderson’s creations with Ed bishop, Shane Rimmer, Michael Billington set my life for me. Thank you Paul, seriously thank you for a lovely video and flooding back memories and who remembers Gabriel Drake😉
That church is gorgeous Paul.. I remember watching Colditz as a kid. He was certainly underrated as an actor, without a doubt.. in your profile pic (don't know what it's description is) of this wonderful actor, only he could suit that hairstyle. Thank you for signing the book for you and us. You don't half go to some lengths for us Paul and I do appreciate you. Ed could've acted many main characters, a sheer waste of great talent.. rip Ed Bishop..you will never be forgotten xx
We may not have the best weather in the UK, but it’s our weather! Watched both UFO and Captain Scarlet as a kid, he had a great voice. My hubby still watches reruns of UFO. Love seeing inside the churches.
great video paul ... captain scarlet and the angels wow my favourite ..and of course ufo the girls ...ed bishop a great character, actor and his voice unique ...thanks paul ...sorry about the weather ...
What a lovely church Paul hope u got a little warm in there, couldn’t place Ed Bishop until I saw his face, what a man,sad about his son,RIP to both, another great video as ever Paul x❤
I agree, a much underrated and under used actor. Always pleasing when Ed's face popped up in film and TV. Seeing Ed always reminded me of my childhood and the various exciting films and shows I watched him in as a child. I loved your point of "leave things as you find them", going that extra mile that if a flower pot has over turned you put it right, keep up the caretaking and producing interesting vids :)
Evening Paul. Yes a very much underappreciated actor, loved the ufo series, especially the beautiful ladies in their uniform. Especially miss drake from crossroads
He had a sucessful career perhaps could have done more. Provided many happy memories across the years and tried to protest against what he believed was wrong. Thank you very much for showing both the church and the graves. He will be missed by many Rest In Peace Ed Bishop.
I can remember watching Captain Scarlet very well Paul, because I used to watch that over my History lessons at school and when you mentioned him to the video it made me bring me memories of watching it at school 🏫 what great memories that was 😊 Ed Bishop played the character very well and may Captain Scarlet rest in peace 🙏. Bless him. Great video Paul, Have a great day ahead and take it easy! 😀
You mentioned ‘The Lords of Discipline’. I was an extra in that when it was filmed at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1982. Didn’t get to meet him unfortunately…
A very sensitive, well researched presentation of the life and work of such a fine actor. Ed Bishop's Straker character was an inspiration for so many kids to delve into the sci-fi world, myself included. So tragic that his son died in an accident; a strange coincidence, perhaps, as I recall an episode of UFO in which his young son was struck and killed by a car he was driving. RIP, Ed. 🕯️🙏🏻
😢 Such an underrated actor . But at least most of my generation will remember him best for the classic British series U.F.O .....
I agree with you….he was very underrated indeed, but what shocks me was that he only lived 20 miles away from me in Warwickshire.

Hi paul thanks for another fab show shame the weather was against you yet again yes I'm sure we all remember Ed Bishop as captain scarlet and your right he never got the credit he so much deserved but thanks for the memories Ed R.I.P
Thanks paul and a lovely gesture to visit his sons grave as well. X
What a beautiful place to rest in peace with your son.
Thank you Ed for entertaining us.
Bless you.❤
I wish thre were fresh flowers there....💐
Thank you Paul. Loved Ed Bishop and all UFO cast even though I am too young really to watch original but love sci fi. I was always going to go down to Napton and find his grave myself so thanks for this.
I was in awe of Ed, as a child.. brilliant actor. Thank you Paul 💚
i remember the man very well, he was a great actor, like you said didnt get the credit he so deserved. make sure you have a hot bath to warm you up, lots of love,
A gem of a video...great, great actor, outstanding in UFO....
"Very underrated actor Ed!...thanks for this Paul👍....Happy memories from childhood!...loved Ed's voice!. Ed with blonde hair, could've been brother's with dear George Peppard"🕯️🥀🕊️🙏
Not only did I watch Ed Bishop when I was a kid in UFO,but I still listen to his audio plays, playing Philip Marlowe as an adult.RIP EB
*Thinks*
Actually, no. I'm not quite so keen on the "sudden deluge when least expected," where you go from dry to sodden in 2 seconds flat. That's just Mother Nature being rude!
Thanks for another great informative video Paul.I loved watching Ed Bishop in UFO,that was a brilliant series.
There's a This is Your Life where Gabrielle Drake is the featured star. It's on TH-cam. The purple hair looked funky.
….And George Sewell and Ayshea Brough also Peter Gordeno
That church is gorgeous Paul.. I remember watching Colditz as a kid. He was certainly underrated as an actor, without a doubt.. in your profile pic (don't know what it's description is) of this wonderful actor, only he could suit that hairstyle. Thank you for signing the book for you and us. You don't half go to some lengths for us Paul and I do appreciate you. Ed could've acted many main characters, a sheer waste of great talent.. rip Ed Bishop..you will never be forgotten xx
Thanks for bringing his memory back😊
You always do a wonderful job man and keeping the stars memories alive good man🙂🤠❤
We may not have the best weather in the UK, but it’s our weather!
Great Actor Paul ... Beautiful tribute ...Lovely headstone
So dedicated. Thumbs up as always.
What a lovely church Paul hope u got a little warm in there, couldn’t place Ed Bishop until I saw his face, what a man,sad about his son,RIP to both, another great video as ever Paul x❤
Another brilliant video Paul.we really enjoy them.well done mate
I agree, a much underrated and under used actor. Always pleasing when Ed's face popped up in film and TV. Seeing Ed always reminded me of my childhood and the various exciting films and shows I watched him in as a child. I loved your point of "leave things as you find them", going that extra mile that if a flower pot has over turned you put it right, keep up the caretaking and producing interesting vids :)
I never realised how many things he'd been in, a great actor, loved the new intro what a beautiful area x
He will be missed by many Rest In Peace Ed Bishop.
brilliant tribute paul i had forgotten him but as soon as you showed his picture i recognised him from my childhood thank you xx
I can remember watching Captain Scarlet very well Paul, because I used to watch that over my History lessons at school and when you mentioned him to the video it made me bring me memories of watching it at school 🏫 what great memories that was 😊
Ed Bishop played the character very well and may Captain Scarlet rest in peace 🙏. Bless him.
Great video Paul,
Have a great day ahead and take it easy! 😀
One of my favourites shows second to Thunderbirds and stingray,,keep it lit Paul,,
Thank you Paul for the video two beautiful churches looking forward to the next video 🙂👋👌👍
Well done Paul battling the weather ufo one of my favourites
Good old British weather paul lol brings back memories of watching ufo thanks for all yr hard work & traveling much appreciated
You mentioned ‘The Lords of Discipline’. I was an extra in that when it was filmed at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1982. Didn’t get to meet him unfortunately…
Great film 🤘
Great southern accent😮
Thanks paul
Immediately recognised voice, Ed was a big part of my TV childhood. Nicely done tribute there 👍
A superb vid as always. But man! I was cold just watching it.
RIP, Ed. 🕯️🙏🏻
This was very well done, thank you. May Ed and his son rest in peace.
