A British literary Colossus. Philosophically questioning, politically moral man who tried to explain the dilemmas of his time. Fought for his ideals, and when he saw the drawbacks, tried to illuminate the rest of us. What a human being!

How apt visiting George Orwell`s grave at this time. I have seen recently his book 1984 being mentioned more and more
    on the internet.
Another very interesting journey back in time, like history repeating itself.

Poor old Boxer. Served his purpose, then off to the glue factory.
“All Animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”
Never a more truer sentence spoken. RIP George.

I noticed the grave of David Astor behind Orwell's grave. He was a publisher who saw Orwell has his mentor apparently. Google him - he seems to have had a very interesting life. Good video. Thank you again.

A genuine paragon of the literary world. A visionary a philosopher and social commentator. Strands towering along with history's great thinkers in my view.
Then as you say Paul, such a humble end at 47.

Great video! His grave is a great addition to this village where I live and I love the fact he wanted to keep things simple when he passed, no fuss, just left in peace!
And that guy really does love his organ, I hear him playing with it.. I mean "playing it" everyday..... 😄

A very appropriate resting place for George Orwell. I've read most of Orwell's books. If you're going to read just one then I'd recommend Animal Farm. That's a fascinating churchyard; as others have pointed out David Astor and former prime minister Asquith are also buried there. Lovely church, too.

I have been rewatching all your fabulous videos as I am having a flair up of my Rheumatoid arthritis.
I missed this one when it first came out. My first flat was yards away from the hotel in Hayes where he worked as a teacher for a while. My grandparents knew him at that time.
I was brought up with his writing and often wondered where he buried. I now live close to this village so will be visiting his last resting place soon thanks to you.

    Good morning Paul.
Another great video as always. I have to admit that the only Orwell book I have ever read was Animal Farm back in the 70’s and that only because it was part of the school curriculum back then and it seems it still is as my daughter who is in Year 10 has just been reading it at school.
On a different note, during your film I spotted a grave stone immediately behind Orwell’s bearing the name ‘David Astor’ and the piqued my interest. The Astor family were known as the ‘Landlords of New York’ and I wondered if this gentleman was in any way connected. A long shot I thought as he’s buried in an English churchyard but it appear that despite being born in England, he was indeed directly related to the family! His full name was Francis David Langhorne Astor and was the Editor of the Observer which his family owned at the time, the paper was sold in 1977 to the American owner of the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company in 1977. So how come Astor ended up in country churchyard in Oxfordshire? Well, he was a friend of Orwell and when he found out that Orwell had asked to be buried in an English country churchyard, Astor bought two grave plots at All Saints, Sutton Courtenay to honour his friends last wish and so he too could be buried near him when the time came!
You see what wonderful journeys you send us on Paul! Once again, keep ‘em coming and inspiring your followers take the time to do their own (small) bit of research. Looking forward to the next already!

Did you know that Orwell had knuckle tattoos...While working as a police officer in Burma, Orwell got his knuckles tattooed. Adrian Fierz, who knew Orwell, told biographer Gordon Bowker that the tattoos were small blue spots, “the shape of small grapefruits,” and Orwell had one on each knuckle. Orwell noted that some Burmese tribes believed tattoos would protect them from bullets. He may have gotten inked for similarly superstitious reasons, Bowker suggested, but it's more likely that he wanted to set himself apart from the British establishment in Burma. "He was never a properly 'correct' member of the Imperial class-hobnobbing with Buddhist priests, Rangoon prostitutes, and British drop-outs," Bowker wrote...
Great video as always, i really enjoyed this one especially 😊👍💯❤ xx

    Hi Paul,
    Thank you.
Not visited your posts for a little while, so nice to return.
As the comments suggest, quite a few references recently about the book 1984 , perhaps because of Ukraine.
I've not read any of his work, so must make an effort to read 1984.
Was trying to identify what the church organist was playing, didn't sound like Bach.

I remember reading "1984" at school and having to write an essay on it. I was only 15 and spent most of my days thinking about the opposite sex, so all I wrote about was Winston and Julia's affair. Needless to say, I only got a D for my efforts and a comment saying I hadn't read the book. I've since read it a further 3 times. I wonder what he would make of the world today.

Another great visit. When I was about 8, 1954 cartoon movie of Animal Farm was shown on tv. It was harrowing to watch & upset me a lot, yet the trailer suggested kids would enjoy it. Don’t know what it was back in the 50s & 60s but thinking death, hurt & pain made it suitable for kids? Dumbo & Bambi made me cry & fearful like Animal Farm.
Read the book years later and 1984. Orwell definitely predicted much & as an adult, could see a thought provoking view into those on power.

He WAS a brilliant writer..studied his book Animal Farm for part of my English exam back in the distant past, but can still recall a lot of it. Also 1984. I knew he had served in Mandalay during the war, and for years thought he had written that famous song of the time “On the Road to Mandalay,” only to find latterly that it was actually written by Rudyard Kipling -He of Jungle Book fame! ) I feel He was quite a far thinking writer for his time, and also produced a book called “Why I write” and in it said that he had always wanted to make his political writing into an Art”…..I read it back then, but still prefer Animal farm, which brought a more fun/comedic way of thinking about politics in a way….(50 odd years later I still find politics a comedy most of the time! Lol) I didn’t know That his real name was Blair, and when did the adopted son come into the picture? Looking at the photo of George , he looks years older than his 46 yrs when he passed away, so am assuming ( probably incorrectly) that it was taken after his initial bad bout of TB. He certainly had a plethora of famous names visiting him in his sick bed during his final days, and nice to know his Tutor was one of them. Very sad such a great and fascinating mind was taken much too soon bless him.
Thankyou for paying respects to this fascinating man on our behalf Paul… …well done finding his grave…a lovely well kept and peaceful churchyard, I think he would be pleased to think one of his friends found a place for him to rest.
Take care Paul, and stay safe! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 warm regards Helen 🙋‍♀️😘😺

    Found this on Franta Belsky.
In 1944, he married Margaret Owen the newspaper cartoonist, who signed her own work Belsky. After her death in 1989, in 1996 he remarried fellow sculptor Irena Sedlecká.
