    Oh my Paul, wish I knew you were coming to Brighton. You showed my late husband’s grave and my mother and father’s grave, well you walked past them both lol.I did not know Bill Pertwee and his wife was buried in this cemetery,I must of gone past their resting places a million times and not connected the name.I absolutely love dad’s army,I still watch the series today. It is a shame they don’t make comedies like that anymore,I loved all the characters in dad’s army.Thankyou Paul I will have to say hello to Bill and his wife next time I go to the cemetery, which is every Sunday.❤️❤️❤️

    Dad's Army is arguably the best British sitcom ever written and produced. Bill Pertwee was a legend too. A brilliant comic actor who helped make this series so fantastic. Thanks Paul. I hope you can get round to bringing us more of the DA cast and writers that are now sadly gone.

    • @fus149hammer5
      @fus149hammer5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tonyhancock4258 You can't get better than Steptoe and Porridge. Two class shows that are more comedy dramas than straight comedy. Strangely the premise is the same, men trapped in either a building or relationship that they cannot escape. Hancock is from a different time and era. Brilliant, but for some, being in black and white and with an "obsolete" view of the world means it doesn't get the respect it deserves.

    I met Bill Pertwee several times because I went to the Dad's Army days at Bressingham every year. I also met his cousin Jon dressed in character as the scarecrow, Worzel Gummidge, at a school fete in 1982 . They were both very warm to the fans. Bill Pertwee was very proud of his role as the warden in Dad's Army and Jon clearly loved being Worzel.

    He was the perfect nemesis to Captain Mainwareing, if you watch the series he sometimes very nearly “corpsed” when delivering lines! And he always took the fall in their escapades, if anything involved water, he was the one that got wet! He did most of his own stunts too! He was a big visitor to WW2 re-enactment events, sometimes turning up unannounced! I met him when I was a kid on holiday in Torbay, he was there with Ian Lavender filming for the series Seaside Special when Dads Army was at its height. Got his autograph too!! Sadly missed!!

    Apart from being a fantastic comedy series and one of few that still catch a new audience from today’s generation, I think that when the show first aired in the late 60’s it was also therapeutic to many ex soldiers who had endured horrific experiences during WW2. In fact, I know it did if my Grandfather was anything to go by. Grandad had served in Burma in the latter years of the war after being called up as a Reserve in 1939 due to serving in the British Army between the wars and was Posted as ‘missing, presumed dead’ but survived after being hidden in the hills from the Japanese along with colleagues by the indigenous people who understood that the British were against the Japanese as they too were. Grandad never spoke about his experiences in Burma as many others didn’t but ‘Dad’s Army’ fast became his favourite TV show. I recall visiting my Grandparents one evening not long after the first series of the show had started and walking into their front room I saw Grandad absolutely crying with laughter as he sat watching the antics of Captain Mainwaring and his motley bunch! Sadly, Grandad passed away in January 1973 from Prostate Cancer at the age of just 67 but I don’t think he ever missed an episode of Dad’s Army and whenever I watch the show I think of my Grandfather that evening howling with laughter.

      One of the writers had served in the Home Guard. Dads Army was first broadcast when WW2 was in the public memory for most people. I think there were concerns about matters of "taste". My grandfather served in the Home Guard, and my dad served in the Royal Navy. We always watched Dads Army and my parents wre often in tears of laughter. Some of the show's lines are universally known, like "Don't tell him, Pike!" It was very common for WW2 veterans to keep their experiences to themselves. I shudder to think what your grandfather and his comrades endured. Much respect them.

    Crikey, Bill Pertwee died exactly 8 years to the day after his wife, but their graves are in an awful state, which is a real shame. I still watch Dad's Army because it is good, clean fun and doesn't need swearing, sex or filth to make it watchable. My son is 23 and loves it as well, it suits his sense of humour and i inadvertently found the radio show that followed on from Dad's Army on radio 4 extra. Thank you Paul for researching all the people that you include in your finds, because it brings out some things that we possibly didn't know. I am of the Worzel Gummage era and my dear friend from school was called Worzel from the day that it started, i think because of my friend's curly hair sticking out all over the place when it needed cut, and he is still called that by school peers to this day.

    Thank you. My Dad was in the Irish equivalent of the Home Guard during WW2 which here in Ireland was referred to as the Emergency(He was nearly 60 by the time I came along) he used to love watching Dad’s Army and got me into it as a kid, along with the other sitcoms of Perry & Croft. I love listening to Round the Horne and Bill Pertwee’s terrible Irish accent when he does his impression of Eamon Andrews or Android😉☺️

    As a child I went to a small school in Westcliff-on-Sea called Westminster Preparatory School, so small it was just two houses with a total number of pupils of around 60. There was a list of notable students on the wall and one of them was Bill Pertwee. I can't remember the dates he attended, though.

    I briefly got to meet Bull Pertwee while I was on duty with St John Ambulance. I bought 2 books he'd written one about steam railways and one about the making of Dads Army he signed them both for me one for my father in law and one for who mum says is my father as it was father's Day the day after. Bill Pertwee was a lovely kind and true gentleman I loved meeting him he made me feel very comfortable with him just like being with a favourite much loved uncle.

    The fact that the Chapel of Rest is boarded up Paul, says a lot more about the living than the dead ! So sad that for such a wonderful family man that his and his wife’s grave are so neglected. Thank you for all the laughs Bill and the greatest comedy show ever seen on television. His last ever line on DA, after the wedding and invasion alert was “….well just look at you all…they’d walk straight through you….” Sadly, how right that would have been.

      Graves get neglected, for whatever reasons, sad, but true,, reasons probably death of close relatives.

    Great videos , very interesting to hear some history of the lives of our much loved entertainers. Also interesting to see where they are buried etc. Thank you. Bill Pertwee also starred in a couple of episodes of Worzel Gummidge with his cousin John , he had a couple of small parts. It would be interesting if you could find Jon Pertwees grave, just a suggestion. Thanks again 👍

    Currently following 'it sticks out half a mile' on radio 4 extra. Follow up to Dad's Army. The warden and pike buy a pier to renovate.

      Same here. Arthur Lowe was in the pilot episode as Mainwaring applying for a bank loan from Wilson of all people to buy the pier but he was very ill and his performance was shambling and he almost sounded drunk. Sadly he died soon after and it was rewritten with Hodges and Pike buying the pier. An almost forgotten gem amongst the muck that is today's radio.

    By all accounts another lovely man and human being. Sad to see his, and his wife’s, overgrown untended graves.

    Hi Paul, thanks for yet another great video, I think I speak for all your viewers when I say that we really do appreciate all that you do to bring us all your videos. For me personally, they give me something to look forward to. Obviously your beauty and charm has nothing to do with that 😉🤭 Have a fab week and stay cool.
