  • The OEM R53 chrono pack displays a fake oil temperature. It's completely useless. With a bit of CAN knowledge, sensor measuring, and the Steinhart-Hart equation, I bring you: A real oil temperature gauge!

    Thank you for explaining how the oil temp gauge on the chrono pack is a FAKE!!
    My R50 2004 model was sold in Australia with this pack & I kept wondering how the oil temp gauge never moved much. As you explained, it might have something to do with how long you actually drive the car before it registers any movement at all. I began to think I had a faulty sensor somewhere which is how I found your video. Now you have me wondering how much more fakery is under the bonnet! (Hood) That being said I still love the little beast!

    Cool idea, thought about selling preset units? I'd there a dedicated wire for oil temp signals only or do you have to manipulate the main canbus wiring?

    What CAN message IDs did you discover for the Oil pressure and Oil temp?

    Is there anyway for you to make a video to show where you added certain parts to the car, because as you know there is no way to tell the oil pressure or temp before you install the Chrono gauges? Is there something that needs to be added to the oil pan or anything?

    What are the CAN IDs for oil pressure & oil temperature.

    Hi. I’ve got 2 minis one r53 and one r52 which is a breaker for the S. it got everything. The S is a 06 and r52 a 55. Can I swap the chrono pack into the S easy. These girls do it on you tube but lit up like Christmas tree!

    So how much would it be for you to do this to mine if I sent in my chrono pack

    It's hard to find information about this stuff so maybe you will know, I have an r53 and I would like to upgrade my interior to all the chrono gauges so the center gauge you have here and the tack and speedo on the steering wheel. Are they just plug and play for swapping out or is it more complicated than that?

      They physically plug and play, connectors and mounting and such, but in a car not "coded" for them, it will need to be "coded". I use quotes because that's kind of a confusing term, but it's the term everyone uses on the internet for re configuring the software in car. It's essentially what the dealership does to.
      Basically, the car needs to be programmed to let the chrono pack know it's there. You can do so using program such as NCS Expert or INPA (i believe). Hopefully that gets your google searches started, I don't have a whole lot of experience with each program to be able to comment much further.

      @@GarrettsSubaru no you pretty much answered what I was asking, but I figured that how it would be because nothings easy especially when it's something made by BMW lol Thanks!

      Jake. Did you do it? And what was the process?

    Are the coolant temperature and boost pressure readings also false, i.e. generated by the computer based on engine load, etc., and not actual readings from physical sensors?

    • @GarrettsSubaru
      @GarrettsSubaru  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those will be genuine signals as those sensors are onboard the vehicle for engine control.

    So if the chrono pack is fake, tell me is there in car real pressure and temperature for oil sensors? to check it with obd2 ? or they have to be added aftermarket? Can You create and sell module for chrono pack in R53 to show real pressure and oil temperature?

    • @GarrettsSubaru
      @GarrettsSubaru  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no sensors on the car, and I am working on a generalized module that WOULD allow for real sensors to be added in :)

    Are you interested in selling this as a kit? I might be interested.

    Learned something new about my mini..but I’m 100% sure I can’t do this whole set up you didn’t. So I’ll just live and die with the lie 😅

    so the pressure display is accurate? just temp is fake

    Cool concept but the practical application is more important. I scanned your videos but didn't see if you ever applied this.

    • @GarrettsSubaru
      @GarrettsSubaru  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never went on a route to make a real application of this, mostly due to my Mini just being a stock daily (I still have it!) where oil temp isn't a huge deal.
      I do have some CAN based oil temp/pressure sensors and gauges operational in vehicle, however, to do this properly in the Mini requires gatewaying CAN signals.. so a bit more effort.
      I know exactly what to do for an actual application, and even have some hardware built for it, just haven't spent any effort doing so.
      If there is interest in a kit.. I could definitely develop something... but it would likely end up being too expensive for me to make to make it worth it for a customer.

      @@GarrettsSubaru thanks for the reply. I've seen the separate based guages (pillar & column mounted), and really appreciated the clean look a functional chrono guage would offer.
      Looking through the forums while sourcing the chrono pack for my son's r52 and I came to believe there's a market for this application.
      If you had to guess how much would that build cost?
