R53 Mini Cooper S Oil Temperature and Pressure Gauges DIY

  • Tracking my R53 was a blast, but I was a nervous wreck the entire time worrying about the oil pressure and temperatures. I had a set of AutoMeter oil pressure and oil temperature gauges ready to go, but I hadn't had a chance to install them yet. I told myself I would not track the car again until I installed the gauges. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of great options to get access to the oil galleys to get a good pressure and temperature signal.
The first option I tried failed, and after some brainstorming, I was able to come up with an option I was happy with: using an adaptor to replace the oil drain plug for the oil temperature sender and screwing the oil temperature gauge directly into the back of the block. The factory dummy light does not come on if I unplug the sensor; so, using an adaptor, I can screw the pressure sender directly into the block. Sadly, the pressure sender was too large a diameter to fit in that area. Eventually, I'll have a custom adaptor made to make a slightly longer adaptor that will allow the sender to fit in place. For now, I am using a rubber hose to go from the block to the sender. It's not perfect, but it works.
The gauges were specifically chosen because AutoMeter makes a very high quality gauge and to match the factory Mini gauges. The gauge pods are from Alta (and a bit overpriced). The overall package blends into the interior pretty well. Overall, I am extremely happy with it, but it was a tedious process to get to this point. Hopefully, my teething issues will help you add gauges to your Mini.

I love your video. I have a question regarding the 12V power source during installation. Why couldn't you combine the power sources for the light bulb and the gauge itself to a single 12V power source say the radio in this case?

Hey Mate, could you shoot me a list of all the adapters and such you need? or put a list in your description?

It depends on how you want to do it, but to duplicate my set-up, you'll need the 1/4 barb with 3/8npt male and 1/4 barb with1/8npt female for the oil pressure and an M12x1.5 to 1/8npt for the oil temperature. You could also use a 3/8npt to 1/8npt adatpor for the oil pressure. It would be much simpler.

@@350Z247 Isnt the drain plug size M14x1.5? Cause I also bought a magnetic Drain plug recently because my OEM one was stripped. and Im pretty sure it was M14

@@delightfulfish7341 You are correct. I accidentally told you the drain plug size for my M5. Apologies.

hey m8 did u ever tried water temo gauge, i need to know does that water temp sensor can be screwed instead bleed screw on joint pipe?! thanks

I think that would work, but you would need a new housing as the thread pitch likely won't match. I don't the factory water temp sensor is pretty accurate through the OBD2 port.

10 psi is bad oil pressure

10 PSI at 700rpm at operating temperature is perfectly normal.
