As a follow up to my previous comments, as I am doing the set up there are SPECIFIC MINI parameters that need to be set vs the default with regard to draining the vehicles battery after shutdown. This setting is VERY IMPORTANT to prevent battery drain, particularly if not driven often. It is shown on page 46 of the installation / operators manual. Set to “Mode 2” for a MINI.
Unless I have a different version of the ultraguage v1.2 manual downloaded, my manual states on page 46 at the top, in RED, “battery drain”. It goes on to explain why you have to set up mode 2 in the Mini. Maybe search your downloaded doc for the “ battery drain” section. Hope this helps.
@@ralphfisch8452 I bought it in late 2012, so definitely don't have a manual any longer. It's a 1.2, however. I guess an early version of it, but according to Ultragauge's page, the battery drain issue only applies to versions of UG prior to 1.2.... Supposedly 1.2+ doesn't have the issue. What menu setting becomes "Mode 2" ... ? I don't see anything about a "mode" in the menus. Thanks for any help. I'm putting this into my wife's Mini and do NOT want her to end up w/ a dead battery and stranded.
Thank you very much for making this video. I recently purchased a 2010 R56 with an N12 engine and six speed transmission. After about six months of researching the actual year of vehicle I wanted, and then trying to find a locally owned one owner, non -smoker, no accidents vehicle in my choice of color I finally came upon one that met all my criteria. Hopefully it will be reliable for me, even though it won’t be a daily driver. I put approximately $2000 into it to bring it up to my standards and I’m not overly concerned about spending that much since I got the car at a very good price from the original owner in a private sale. One of the things that I was surprised with was the lack of more gauges to tell you what’s happening with the engine. As a professional pilot for nearly 40 years (now retired) I always like to know what’s happening with my engine because you can’t pull over in a cloud to fix something. Obviously a car is much different but I don’t want to be stranded along the side of the interstate. After searching the Internet and TH-cam I came across your video and again thank you. I immediately ordered the gauge with the mount that you have, and it arrived a few minutes ago. I plan on installing it in that exact location in my car. I don’t have the fancy simulated wood grain, but I have just the silver painted plastic. I also put a label there which I’m going to relocate that says “oil/coolant” so that whenever I get in the car before I go anywhere I am reminded to check the oil and the coolant level as I know those are extremely important with these engines. Along with my research on the gauge I noticed some people commenting about the fact that the installation/owners manual is about 63 pages in a downloadable PDF. I don’t understand why they complain about it because you should actually review it and you don’t have to print it out. You can download it on your computer, phone or tablet and then you can review and access the appropriate areas and plan to get things set up properly. There’s always going to be whiners and complainers. One thing I would like to address and it has been pointed out here before (thank you) is it would be much easier to program the unit in your hands relaxing in the drivers seat before you actually do the installation. Simply unwind the wiring harness and plug it into the OBD II port and then turn your vehicle on and program the unit without having to fiddle reaching behind it once it’s installed on the dash. My plan is to display the coolant temperature, oil temperature (would like oil pressure but not available), fuel pressure, voltage at CPU, and maybe fuel used and fuel remaining. My main use will be coolant temp as the car will be driven infrequently and I want to wait till the gauge is “off the peg” before putting any load on the engine. Finally there are different settings that I will access regarding the display brightness / auto brightness levels. Hope this addition to an already informative video helps someone. Cheers.
Fantastic points and glad the video helped! I agree with the settings you’re displaying as mine are similar. This gauge single handedly recently let me know my thermostat was starting to fail as I saw temps consistently over 220 over the course of a few days. No notifications provided from the car until you overheat, in which case you are at risk of damaging your motor. Safe to say the gauge just saved me a lot of money.
I just bought a mini last week and as an A&P mechanic, here I am looking for something to monitor the engine’s parameters. I totally understand how you feel. 😂

Now that the gauge is installed and working wonderfully, I would give it about a 9 out of 10. If they had a way of either changing the display color, or perhaps three different models -say Orange-ish/Red, pale green and the existing blue it would be a 10. Probably would cover about 95% of the instrument colors of enthusiasts vehicles who purchase and utilize it.

If you ever want to take the orange of just remove it. I encourage you to check the video out as it pushed me over the edge and makes me want to get one now.
