    It’s so refreshing to see a review that goes into photos with this camera! Everyone loves to talk about the video, but it is nice to see another perspective. And you have such a calming and likable personality. Not a ton of crazy editing, but you keep things interesting. Thank you.

    Hi Maarten,
    Another brilliant A-Z camera review for the Sony RX100 and delivered in a very relaxed and friendly way. I like watching your reviews as they are both very informative and also have a sprinkle of very useful tips thrown in for seasoning!
    Great to meet both of you whilst here in France this year - next time you are over here and in the South we must have dinner, naturally after we have both taken the food pictures beforehand!!
    All the best. Mark

    You can always use the lensmate quick change filter adapter kit for the RX100 VI and add ND and other any 52mm filters.

    I am a Sony user ( came over from Canon ) now shoot A7Riii + A6300. I do enjoy your reviews. And this one is once again, excellent. I enjoy the fact, that you move quickly through the review, as most will know how, and really, just want to know, what is new to the item being reviewed. Also great editing, making for not only an excellent review, but also a great look at a cycle trip. Thanks Steve ( New Zealand )

    Been a while Mr Heilbron, nice to revisit you and catch this A+ presentation. Very enjoyable review due to your particular steady style with both dense info & clear organization. I suggest you pitch your method of presentation to manufacturers. No wasted time, full detailed disclosure, yet no sense of a rush. Not a "you figure out what to do" laundry list of specs, but wise real world advice. Alternately offer to write a user guide to go with their stunningly cold engineer-written "manuals." I don't own a Sony, they are notoriously confusing, yet your presentation make the product seem very approachable. You add value. A person could buy that camera, watch your vid, and avoid a ton of aggravation. Happy new year.

    Have recently discovered your channel and been binge watching your videos since. Besides the meticulous planning, shooting and in-depth reviews, I am also wondering how come I haven't heard you say "umm" once. Really impressive.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very kind of you to say - although it's hard to imagine someone binge-watching my videos.
      It's not as big a deal as you think. I record from a script, I use a teleprompter for my on-camera scenes and I do a re-take if I'm not happy, which makes avoiding umms easy - I am still fighting with my need to start sentences with "so" and "now" even when they're not in the script.

    Beautiful work as always. Kudos from a fellow Canuck! I have an RX100 iii and couldn't live without the AG-R2 grip that attaches to the front of the camera. Why it isn't included in the box escapes me. I find it completely changes the handling of the camera and facilitates single handed use. Cheers!

    I just ordered this camera today! My husband and I are heading to Italy in about a month for our honeymoon and I did not want to take my big clunky Nikon but wanted so bad to have a camera with me! I have been trying to do some research on it before it arrives. I love taking photos and can take some great ones but I do not get to enough to be as knowledgeable in all of the settings and things like that. So I came across your video and thought it was so informative and saved it to watch again when my camera arrives next week!

    I am a new owner just getting to grips with the camera. I also own a Sony A6300, so the labyrinthine menu isn't as much an issue for me as for someone coming fresh to it. It might be worth you adding a caption to point out that an adhesive filter ring is available and so can negate the lack of an ND filter. A useful video, clear and comprehensive. I keep my subscriptions to a minimum, but you earned one. Thank you.

    Lost the Mk4 in Lock 49 on the Burgundy canal - have the Mk 6 as replacement --- such a huge menu system is intimidating ---- Auto seems to do very well for travel shots where the moment is more important than the picture. Hi Maarten,
    I just went on holiday, biking like you, with my RX100VI and I also found it the perfect camera to be able to travel light. The quality of the images is quite good. I did not try the video side but I guess it will be good as well. Thanks for this good video, covering everything and showing real life pictures and videos. The zoom range is really suitable for travel photography and I love it. Thanks again.

    Recently bought (well it was my 50th b'day present) the SONY RXM6. I'm really pleased with the camera so far. It has so many features and settings that I'm still discovering right now. So, your tips on settings are really useful. I'd read so many negative reactions to this camera (especially on the Sony YT channel) that I somehow thought that I made the wrong choice in choosing this SONY. Your video put my mind to rest as you actually show the pro's and con's of the camera. Guess there's not 1 compact camera out there that will please everyone or offer all the features that are available. Buying one model is loosing out on the pro's of another model. Glad you spoke about the overheating and it not really being a big issue (for you). So many people are complaining that they can only film for a max of 5 minutes. I was wondering how many of those users actually film for 5 minutes in 1 go?! I use my camera when on holidays and I'm not on a cinematography expedition. So this camera is perfect for me.

      Thanks for your kind words, they are appreciated. And it's always nice to hear from a viewer who's found a camera that suits them. Yes, the five minute limit is annoying for some, but as you rightly point out, it's a limit that most of us can live with.

    I love your RX100 reviews because they make sense to me. I need to search and see if you have had other Sony RX100 cameras recently since I purchased my M3 quite a while ago. I am guessing the M7 will have ND and a better lens for low light situations. Wonder if I can hold off on a M6 purchase or just repair my M3 with the error message. Pondering.

    Just sold my M5 and bought a M6 -- agree with your review, including the lack of a built in ND filter. But an easy workaround is to buy a Lensmate type filter holder and ND and /or polarizer filter(s). Easy on and off. Next vacation what about New Zealand? It's on my bucket list.

    Hi Maarten, what an incredible video. You are a fantastic video maker/teacher. You touch on many things missed by most creators which is very helpful. Can I ask, when you are showing the settings you changed on the camera do you literally have a video camera recording yourself doing this ? also, can I ask what software you use to edit your videos ? . Thanks Maarten , kind regards David

      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very kind of you to say, thanks. I literally have a camera, or am recording from the HDMI port to an external recorder, it depends on what the camera is capable of, and what I want to show. I use Final Cut, the latest version - 10.4.

    first time for me Marteen to hit this page . glad to be here and i enjoyed the wealth of information provided in your review.
    i have the RX100M2, bit old yes but i really like it for the quality of pictures produced.
    if you please, may you respond in keywords on additions and/or improvement of specs/ features between the M2 and the M6 version? i learnt on few from your review (zoom, EVF, touch scrn). this will help me decide on the new pocketable camera that i want to buy, preferably the M6. are you aware if there will be a new release of M7 soon?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words, always nice to hear that my content is appreciated and enjoyed. If you would like a more direct comparison between those two models than you find in the video, I suggest that a google search will yield several web pages where a full comparison is made.
      As for new models, Sony is now very secretive and doesn't pre-release much information, an approach I prefer over those who pre-announce but don't ship. That said, the sonyrumors web site provides some interesting and sometimes accurate information about upcoming products.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi thank you for the great video about the RX100 vi I'm seriously thinking of buying one but also considering the RX100 VA which has ND filter and faster lens albeit not as much zoom. It would mainly be for family shots in the home and out and about like at the local park or family holidays. On your opinion am I better going for the VA as it's a tough choice to make?

    is there any point/benefit in shooting raw if you're just going to convert it to a jpeg anyway? I get that you can tweak it at a later date and all but I don't see myself messing with all the extra stuff trying to fine tune the pictures, so does shooting raw then converting it on a computer yield a better jpeg picture if you are doing nothing but converting it? Thanks, nice video!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, yes - and likely I should do a video about that. First, the space required on a memory card or drive to store a RAW file (in addition to the JPEG file) is small. When you are sorting your photos, if there are one (or more) that you feel could use an adjustment to colour temperature, exposure, etc. those adjustments (for those photos that need it) are easily done and there is enough information in the RAW file to make the adjustment without compromising the image. Then, yes, you output to JPEG (or PNG) for viewing, display and printing.
      Then, when you are done, you can delete the RAW files. That's my approach anyway - I'm sure others have a different approach and philosophy.

    Thanks! One of the most useful reviews I've seen! Despite your personal view of the menu system (I do not object), it is useful for me as a potential buyer to see it and judge for myself. And also with a lot of examples of pictures in different situations.
    I know this review is more than one year old, but my interest for the Sony RX 100 series is awaken since I am getting a little tired of dragging around with a good but bulky Nikon DSLR with two lenses .
    On the other hand, I do not want to sacrifice too much quality. The phone is always present, but ...
    My thoughts is to buy the latest Sony RX 100 VII. A little pricey, though. As I understand it, the only real difference between the VI and the VII is a refined autofocus system with eye-awareness. Would I do better buying the now slightly cheaper VI?

      Thanks for the kind words, always nice to hear from an appreciative viewer. I've just received the VII to take on a trip this week - so will be posting a review in 3-4 weeks.
      In the meantime, I really loved the first iteration, and I think it remains a good choice. However, if you want a viewfinder and the longer zoom, it's later models that will provide that.

    Hi Maarten, another reviewer was lamenting the reduction of the f-stop range from 1.8 - 2.8 to the 2.8 - 4.5 on the new 200mm lens. Did you find it restrictive at all when shooting in low light situations only having f2.8?

    Dear Maarten,
    thank you very much for the excellent review! I've been watching it as I'm looking for an alternative camera to my too heavy Sony a7ii, 24-105 f4 combo. I well realise the difference between the two, after 30 years of photography as a hobby :). However, I shoud either change cameras or not be able to continue with my hikes in the forests, due to some healthy reasons, requiring to drastically decrease the weight of my bag.
    Do you think I will be at least partially satisfied with this small camera :). I normally take the photos underexposed in the forest and then intensively lighten the shadows during postprocessing. Naturally, I would be willing to take several photos with different exposures for most pictures and then merge them. I print up to 30x20 cm. Additionally, what do you think of the bokeh quality this small camera is capable to. Many questions :). I would highly appreciate your response!

      @@MaartenHeilbron Excellent review! I've previously always used Canon equipment and so it's quite an adjustment to the Sony menu system, and for this reason I would prefer that when you show the detailed menu features that you were just a shade slower, but I suppose that most of your audience doesn't need all this information. I recently bought an RX100vi and find that I can keep the diopter from shifting by not allowing the viewfinder to just pop up. Instead I put a finger over the top of the viewfinder and then when I release the pop-up trigger I let it rise slowly until it's fully raised. I came up with this idea after reading how some users had tested their shifting diopters and found that after multiple 'hard releases' of the viewfinder that it always would shift. In fact one 'tester' even documented how it would shift in a very predictable manner and he hypothesized that it was the jarring movement when the viewfinder sprung up fully to the top of its range that caused the movement. Therefore by eliminating the jarring 'hard stop' the diopter will remain stable.

    Thanks for the review. Very relevant for me, as this is one of several cameras that I might actually consider buying.
    Sony has left the inbuilt ND filter out of all their “big zoom” cameras, so it would seem that a large zoom range doesn't work well with an inbuilt ND filter. If it did, they'd probably include it.
    I've owned an ND4 filter for many years, but never actually used it, so for me the problem isn't a big one. Still, I always find it a shame when a camera has no filter thread, as I occasionally do like to use a polarizing filter or an effect filter. So I'll probably skip this one and save up to buy the Eos R when the price comes down ... some day.

    I have this camera, which I pretty much use as a point and shoot travel camera, and it works great for both stills and video. I see this complaint about no neutral density filter for video all the time and am totally mystified by it. It lets you use a slower shutter speed for video? Why would you want that?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To capture smooth motion in video - so that the action flows nicely as you watch - a shutter speed of 1/60 (or so) is best. Faster shutter speeds make the action look jumpy, slower shutter speeds have too much blur. So when shooting at 1/60 outside, it's very difficult (even with ISO 100) to avoid overexposure.

      For the reasons I stated at the beginning - it's so small and easy to carry that it works for situations (like travel, cycling) where the burden of taking an even slightly larger camera is too much. And for as much as we might like to dismiss cameras with one inch sensors, they do (if you give them a chance) deliver much more quality than you might anticipate. As I keep saying, I have several enlarged images (60cmx90cm), taken under various lighting conditions, on my walls - and they are images that I likely would not have taken with a larger camera.

    Je suis Français, living in the Netherlands (Gelderland) . I love you're videos :) Doing the CanalDes2Mers is on my todo list!
    I'm considering sell all my camera stuff and buy a good compact camera... I consider the Sony RX100 IV (or V) because of all the things that offers, but I keep going back the Canon G1X III which offers more simplicity, fully articulated screen and some weather sealing. I'll check your review :)

      C'est agréable de lire tes bons mots, hartstikken veel bedankt. Both canals are worth the trip - the Canal du Midi is the nicer area, but the trail is often in terrible condition. The G1X is also a good choice for a small travel camera, with the advantages you mention.

    I have one question, I just got a Sony RX100 IV and when i'm on Manual mode, if i go to the DRIVE MODE the only options are Single shooting and Self timer, the rest is restricted. Do you know why this is? Thanks a lot!!

    Cool camera. But at the end of the day, I just wonder if a mark 3 or even a mark 1 takes ,photos of near equal quality. I cannot imagine justifying the purchase for stills.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, the images from the earlier models are equal in quality. It's primarily the lens that's been modified, and not always for the better. You'll find a better analysis of this by looking at the dpreview reviews, where they shoot a consistent static scene.

    I'm amazed at the colours of the photos. They are raw files processd in Lightroom and saved as jpgs,aren't they?

      I appreciate your kind words, thanks. When I produced this video Lightroom had not yet been updated to support the Sony RAW format used in the RX100VI, so the images are all JPEGs, but some have been adjusted in Lightroom.
