My wife has been shooting the RX-10 IV for about a year and it's truly a fantastic camera. We have several of her shots blown up to 16X20 and they are every bit as sharp as those taken with my D7200 and various Nikor and Sigma lenses. Very nice review.
I will always come to your channel when I'm deliberating a camera purchase. Today is slightly different in that I have already bought (again!) the RX10iv and wanted to reacquaint myself with its functions. I bought this camera back in 2019 for a trip to India and regretted selling it some months after that trip. 5 years on and I'm getting it again. It's a remarkable piece of kit that produces fantastic photos if its capabilities and limitations are understood. Thanks for the video, it was nice to come back to it after so long!
I am absolutely loving my new RX10 IV-SO many useful features. My one biggest complaint *was* the position of the dedicated “Movie” button on the back, due to my small-sized hands. But after watching this video, I am happy to say that I programmed the main button to start and stop movie recording...as well as programming the lens button to activate EyeAF-ingenious! Thanks for another amazing video!!
I'll be watching your RX10 tutorial videos multiple times. Your insights into the many features make it seem like I am just getting to know this camera even though I have had it for 8 months now. I especially like the highlights exposure feature. I am mainly a stills person but intend to start shooting video in the near future, with this camera giving me plenty to work with.
You are the Rick Steves of camera reviewers. Best review. Best photography. Stunning photos/videos. Excellent tips. Thank you for sharing. My Mark IV will be here in three days. I couldn't wait any longer for the Mark V. You restored faith in my purchase.
After your in depth review of this camera some months ago, I decided to get it and I’m happy I did. It does have a lot of features and modes, a rather large superset. For me, the key was finding which features and which combinations of settings are most important to me, there is no need to memorize the entire feature set. Thank you for your clarity and in depth exploration of the camera when used while traveling on a vacation. For extreme HDR situations, I use the handy auto bracket mode and post process the photos, but the in camera one works quickly and well most of the time.
Thanks - this camera has so much potential, it's great to have your thoughts. I wish I'd had them before the trip, but always good to hear that every situation has many possible solutions.
This is really a great camera for a holiday/vacation or an outing where you don't want a heavy bag. I took mine to Panama City Beach Florida last September for a week and it was fantastic. Setting the lens barrel button to zoom assist allowed me to quickly shoot the F16/F18 fly bys from nearby military bases. They come up fast and you can easily miss them. iso 100, F4 at all focal lengths was so clear and sharp. Great review Maarten!
i recently got my hands on one of these in my local camera shop.went in to ask about the new nikon p1000 and when they would have a demo..im Nikon through and through but the guy in the shop suggested i try the sony rx10 iv he has sitting there .....i was very impressed..the quality feel ..the features and omg that 600mm lens is superb.i can now understand why so many people are switching from canon/nikon to sony ..Ive just recently purchased a new nikon d5600 but im seriously considering selling it after only 4 weeks to buy the sony RX instead...never thought id like a bridge camera more then a dslr lol good video as always and i you have a fantastic voice btw i could listen to you all day lol
I could read your comments all day! Thanks very much for taking the time to comment with such nice words, appreciated. Let me see if I can take the P1000 on an upcoming trip.
Looking forward for your P1000 review, ive just pre-orderd mine (owned P900 3 years)... No exact news on release date in Australia tho, patience is a virtue said no-one waiting for a new camera
You certainly nailed it with the term "overachiever"! Even after downloading the 593-page Sony Help Guide pdf, there are still several things I can't quite figure out. Your video certainly raises my comfort level with having made the purchase. Thanks!
Well, this is a perfect "Real World Review" for this camera, well done Maarten! You should go on vacation more often! ;) Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback, it's always a pleasure to watch.
5 years later and Sony still sells this (no V on the horizon). A local camera store has a used one in very good condition at about 2/3 of new price and I will look at in a few days. It seems to do most things very well and though on the large side, not really if one considers that it would save you a camera with at least two lenses once of which would be large to get 600mm. I’m more of a hobbyist, small camera user (hiker and backpacker who does both photos and videos) but this is very tempting for the breadth it provides. Enjoyed your video!
Nice video... I made the mistake of ordering the Nikon P1000... disaster and anything past 600mm was awful... I just purchased today the Sony RX10 IV... thanks for a great review.
Now that you've mentioned it, I'd forgotten being able to reassign the exposure button for video use in video mode. I also found the dedicated video button sometimes difficult to find. Thanks for the reminder, and for reinforcing the goodness of the '4's 1-inch sensor. Great video.
I sold my Sony RX10 IV after 4 month of use due to constant problems with heavy vignetting (no matter what focal length or aperture setting / raw or jpeg) and strong color banding - especially in the sky! As I read about these problems on several forums I found out that I am not the only one encountering these problems but I also found out, that there is no real solution to fix it properly! A software error? A lens error? No one really knows an Sony remains silent about it.....! I gladly switched back to the Pentax system and their rugged cameras and lenses and now I am a happy photographer again who is enjoying his results :-)!
I own this camera and I always grab it more often than I thought I would. I have just switched from Nikon to Olympus m4/3 pro system but I still grab this camera. The closeup images this camera makes are also awesome. This camera does not get the attention it deserves in my opinion. 24 - 600 f4 Zeiss lens is amazing at 70 - 200 it is as good as my Nikon 70 - 200 f4 was or better.
Maarten, thanks so much for this incisive and informative review of the Sony RX10 IV. I am an avid amateur birder, and am attracted to this camera for its 25X zoom, decent sensor, and great ergonomics (despite the impenetrably complex menu). I spend more of my time using binocs rather than looking through a camera lens, and I don't want to schlep a heavy DSLR+lens on my hikes. I take almost exclusively still photos of birds. Based on what I have read, I think that the RX10 IV might be an good fit for me. But I see that the RX10 IV model is 5 years old. Do you know if/when an RX10 V (or its equivalent) might be coming out? Are there other "bridge" cameras (not a term I like) that you recommend? I currently have an old Nikon Coolpix B700, which I quite like for birding- just as long as the birds are holding perfectly still in good light and not too far away. I have yet to capture a decent photo of a bird in flight, and that is frustrating. Given the age of the RX10 IV, I am tempted to wait for its successor unless there's another "bridge" camera you recommend. I would be grateful for your guidance, and thank you for your consideration.
I have no inside intel on new Sony models - and even the Sony Rumours site can be hit and miss. I think it's still a good choice, particularly for this purpose. There are smaller cameras (with smaller sensors) that offer similar or better zooms, but their image quality doesn't compare. If you can wait and see, then do, but if you're wanting to decide now - I can still recommend it.
@@MaartenHeilbron , thanks so much for your thoughtful and informative reply. You are an amazingly erudite and generous man! I will wait for a while longer- I am going on an international birding expedition in March, and if the new RX10 V is not out by then I will go with the IV. I will let you know!
This is a very excellent review Maarten, convincing me to go ahead with the purchase of an RX10iv. It seems to have all that I need for a travel camera. The weight I think is manageable as a trade-off for having such a well-equipped camera available. I enjoy the period of discovery that comes with a new camera so I am looking forward to getting my hands on the camera hoping that it arrives in time for my holiday. I will study your video intently for clues & tips about using the camera. I will also obtain a spare battery something that I had overlooked. Thank you for your very comprehensive review which is linked nicely to the photos & film clips you have included.
Great video and very useful information! I’ve been shooting with this camera for just over a year now and continue to learn new tricks about it daily. I am wondering if you happen to have a video or know of one where travel has been done in very cold, snowy climates. I’m headed to Montana and Yellowstone in February and trying to decide if I can just take this camera or if I need to be practicing again with my Nikon D750 which is so much heavier. Just curious if you had any advice. Happy New Year!
Sorry, as I returned the camera after the review, I have no further guidance to offer. Thanks for your kind words. For any camera in snowy scenes, keep your eye on the histogram and use exposure compensation to keep the brightest parts of the scene from over-exposing. You'll also find that the RAW files may offer more recoverable detail than JPG.
Thank you for this video. I have had the RX10 IV for about one year. I love the depth of features and capabilities of the camera. However, it has been daunting to decide what settings I should use. I think I am on information overload with all of the online guidance I have watched and read about this camera (I am a bit of an information junky!) I am going to Norway and the Baltic in about one month on an Oceania cruise. Your insights have really helped me to narrow down the settings that I need to use. Now, I am off to view your detailed review of the RX10 IV. I may need an intervention... ;-) Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing, your video is very informative and the manner in which you provide the content is very relaxing. I am a Canon full frame user but see the value of the RX10IV. One of my first cameras was an Olympus C8080, an 8 megapixel bridge camera. This camera cost $1000.00 in 2004 and was considered the top bridge camera for it's time. Due to the slow focusing of the model, I sold on ebay after one year and replaced with a Canon DSLR. Considering $1000.00 in 2004 money and comparing the capability of the C8080 compared to the RX10IV, at $1600.00, it really is a very good bargain for what it offers.
Well, I just took the plunge and bought this camera. Sold my old Canon DSLR and lenses and diving head first into the bridge camera world. I know Sony is due for the next rendition of this camera but this camera is enough for my uses and I will have a steep learning curve. This will be my first Sony so I will have to get used to the menu style. I was on the fence with this camera and the Panasonic FZ2500, and still could change my mind but I will give it a shot!
I treated myself to this camera with some inheritance money. I also have a Sony Alpha 700 and various decent lenses which I've loved using for 9 years. I've yet take a shot with the RX4 that the 700 would have done better with. A great camera and I love not lugging a rucksack full of lenses and stuff around. To answer the previous comment.. I only shoot in raw and yes it does shoot at 24fps in that mode, and for quite a few seconds too. Be careful though. I used that shooting the Tour de France recently and you end up with a hell of a lot of nearly identical images to work through!
I have this camera since the end of 2018 and love it! I have been primarily focusing on the still pictures side of it with great results, but recently started diving into the video settings. Do you think it could be used to shoot videos at weddings as a primary or supplementary camera? BTW, thank you for all your reviews, you are doing a great job, love your positive attitude and high quality shots that you use in your videos.
Good review, Maarten, and the results from this camera are convincing. With today's technology, a 1-inch sensor can turn out first-class results, and your shots prove it. I've travelled with a bridge camera like this one, and I find the size an acceptable trade-off for the amazing versatility they offer. They're even good in low light -- though on a cruise called Into the Midnight Sun, there's not that much low light to deal with ;) To me, the HDR photos came out looking a little washy, something I've found with other cameras -- but that could just be my monitor.
Thanks for the kind words, they're particularly appreciated from someone who's photography experience I respect. I agree with your comments about the look of the HDR images - and I didn't want to make the adjustments in Lightroom to compensate, but that flatness (and over-crispness) can be reduced.
I gave my 26 year old daughter all my camera gear when she moved to Colorado to become an outfitter( 10 year old Nikon stuff with lenses) and am looking to replace them. This Sony system looks to be a very good option for a rusty amateur
Thanks for your review! It answered a question or two that may have been useful for my very recent trip to Alaska, with not enough knowledge of the camera I had just bought. The menu system is very complicated with minimum help, creating quite a learning curve for those coming from Canon. Overall I love the camera but find myself still in the learning mode after hard use for the past month. Most of my trouble was focusing, especially early on. I wound up using center focusing most of the time due to some lost shots with other focus modes, especially flexible spot. I couldn't figure out why the initial spot kept defaulting to the left side of the screen. Is there a menu setting to permanently set the initial spot to the center? I lost some bald eagle shots as a result. I also maxed out my ISO at 6400. While my moose shots show decent detail for the distance the moose are, there is plenty of noise, both luma and chroma. My biggest complaints are the aperture ring is the only way to change it, the focus modes seem to be bumped/changed into what I wasn't expecting at times where I thought I was in continuous but was confused as to how it was in MF, a mode I normally don't use.
Thanks for your kind words and comments. On mine it keeps defaulting to the right, and it's not the only touch screen camera that does that - I have yet to figure out how I'm doing that. I also have not found a setting that will reset it to the default/centre - which would be helpful even if only a power on. Yes, the smaller sensor will be noisy at higher ISOs, that's part of this camera's nature.
Thank you for this useful information I’ve just started a TH-cam channel and realized rather quickly that I need to upgrade my camera so this is actually the camera I purchased I have no clue how to use it so I am learning via TH-cam so thank you again and I might be asking questions shortly✌️
I bought this cam due to the restrictions of the airlines - so I couldn't take a big equipment with me. Now I have the Sony and my Nikon D850 with a 14-24mm lens: both in one backpack and exactly within the limitation of the allowed 8kg cabin luggage. Perfect.
Great video I recently purchased the RX10 and find the menu options overwhelming, it would be great if you could make a video and slow down a bit with the explanation on custom settings particularly HDR how to create a custom program so one can easily go from lets say P to custom keep up the great work
You visited the little farm with the few sheep and horses in Norway that my wife and I also visited on our Baltic cruise on the identical Viking Sky, this week last year. Had a bit of food there and they wore traditional dress, no doubt. I can see you had a great time and also fun with the Sony. Thanks for the video review, which is great and informative as usual.
Interesting and full of relevant info as always. Looks like it makes an excellent travel camera, covering the capabilities of two or even three interchangeable lens bodies. A real "jack of all trades", but is it the master of any? Thanks Maarten, for all your great work and for your postcard too!
Thank you for your kind words, always appreciated - and glad to hear the card arrived. It is an excellent travel camera - it's not the camera that needs to master a trade, it is the craftsman.
I just want to say thank you Maarten, i find your easy, very informative style of great assistance to my self... I just acquired an M4 and keep coming back to your channel for info i may have missed, or just to brush up again, even tho i purchased the eBook on it (which is good also)
Thanks for the kind words, they're always appreciated. Check the description for the link to the full review - and there's a "Best Video Settings" video for the RX10 IV also.
Marten you must be the hardest working man in show biz. Great review. You should have 250,000 subscribers. Btw I have the mark 1 and love it. I bought it lightly used for about 499 I think. Amazing value with inputs and outputs.
Great review. I watched the first and now this one about this camera. The camera seems to be great for my needs (since I like wild life photography and also want to be able to shot 4k videos) but wasn't sure about buying it now as there is an expectation that a new model will be released. I guess the main problem is that Sony is going to through a hard time due to supply chain issues, so I wonder if this camera is still worth it in 2022 or there is another option that can be better at the moment. Obviously, this is a difficult question to answer, but I'm interested in hearing what you think about it. Thanks!
I was just on a Viking Cruise and one of the other avid photographers aboard was shooting with the RX10 IV - she still absolutely loves it. Of course, when the update is released it will have improved autofocus, better video and support HEVC and HEIF - but until then, this remains a very good choice, mostly because of the lens.
Good job Maarten, did you try using LCD in the sunny day? I found it very challenging even when turned to sunny weather. I’m thinking to apply anti glare Matt, but not sure which on is the best and not degrading the display clarity.
Nice video as always and stunning shots. Just a question, i heard alot of people use clip on glass on zoom cameras for macro and super macro shots. Is there any glass that i can use for my rx10 m4. By the way it good to see your videos and know about the menus bcz i still havent used all of them.
Thanks for the review. I love my RX10 iv. Do you know of a hack to eliminate the 20 minute limit on videos? I love the fantastic optics and the sound quality on videos is also great! In short I find this very close to an ideal camera for all around use especially when travelling
I do not, but there are lots of hacks out there. You can either press record again to continue, or if you must have continuous, purchase an external recorder/monitor which is limited only by disk space.
Wow. Great review. Thanx. I am coming from the bridge cameras, all in one, world (with the Panasonic FZ1000i). I really want to advance to the next step in photo quality, and that is of course DSLRs or mirrorless with interchangeable lenses. So I consider the A6400. But the prices on all those lenses really deter me. Especially when I can simply upgrade my camera to the very capable, although old now, Sony RX10iv. Which way would you recommend me to go at this point, as a travel/street photographer with ever growing artistic tendencies?
Try the Fujifilm X-E3, if you can still find one. th-cam.com/video/cv0JUtt6g5E/w-d-xo.html Unless you want the long zoom the RX10 IV offers, in which case (as long as you don't mind the size) it's a terrific camera for travel, not so much street.
This camera is high on my "may buy" list. I'm tired of lugging around tons of DSLR gear (even some mirrorless) when flying. Your comments, and as importantly, the comments in the "comment" section have me thinking it is worth the premium price. I had considered the Nikon P1000, but I'm not liking the smaller sensor and limited ISO range (not to mention the 3+ lbs. hanging around my neck). BTW: I watched your review when I saw you had taken the Viking "Into the Midnight Sun" cruise. My wife and I have been discussing this cruise for a few months. We took a Viking river cruise (Budapest to Amsterdam) a few years ago and loved it. How was the cruise on the larger ship? Thanks for the camera review.
Thanks, always more to hear your thoughts. We loved the Viking ocean cruise - the boat was absolutely lovely, with really wonderful service and food. Some of the included excursions were not worth our time, some of the other ones were worth the money. Altogether a most enjoyable trip.
I love your reviews and I love Norway, wish I could have met you while in London, may be next time. This camera is awesome, but I hate big cameras! thanks for your advice regarding the GX80! with 14-140 and 15mm 1.7, this combination is more than what a photographer may need.
Hi Maarten , as a classical ballet photographer 24 FPS can be a huge help...but I´m concern with IQ...all pictures seems blurry.... Can I expect any sharp picture printed in A3+ size out of this camera ?...or would be a better bet the G9 ?....thanks for sharing with us !!!
hey Dolores, I have printed the same Motiv taken with my Pentax 645Z medium format Camera and the Sony at corresponding focal lengths and people, including me can't tell the difference at A2 !!! stay in the lower ISO ranges, engage Stabilization and adjust shutterspeed to movement and you'll be happy as...AF is really quick, but needs decent light.cheers,Z
Great video, shots amazing, did you use a tripod all the time? Was it hard to get focus handheld with the lens zoomed out all the way? How did the One inch sensor perform in low light?
Thanks for the kind words. I did not use a tripod. I found focus to be fast and easy regardless of the focal length. As you can see in the photos, it works quite well in low light.
I recently used my Sony RX10 IV in Spain. When I came back from vacation, I noticed the videos I took during a festival are frecuently out of focus. I used Continues Focus and Expand Flexible Spot. This happens mainly while filming 4K in interior locations. Any suggestions? Thank you for your videos.
If you use EFS, you'll need to touch the screen on the object you want in focus. It will happen more inside because the aperture is open so the depth of field is smaller. Or try wide or zone, which would look for focus areas all over the screen, not just one area.
Regarding your Panoramic WIDE and DOWN settings, the image was very long vertically but narrow horizontally? Can you explain in more detail how to make this work as you suggested.
My RX10 mk I is limited to 12 MP in pano. Pretty low resolution for a pano, to my taste. I miss the 40 MP that I got with my old HX200V. What about the RX10 mk IV?
Maarten Heilbron Thank you very much. I've just learnt how to do it on computer using the ICE free software, so in camera low resolution panorama won't be an issue anymore. Have a nice day, greetings from Brazil.
As an RX10ii owner I would quickly upgrade if Sony offered the RX10iv in the original 2.8 constant F-stop configuration. The extra reach is nice, but low light shooting suffers way too much once you start zooming. The smaller overall size and weight package of the RX10ii is something I also appreciate. We all know Sony could offer this flavor of the RX10, but it would definitely eat into aps-c sales so I'm not holding out much hope.
Yes, there were some features that were better on the previous models. I think it’s offset by the improved high ISO performance. I’m not sure that’s a consideration for Sony, as their many models attest.
I picked up a Sony RX10ii, condition is as new. I don't have that long reach but the lens is really good and the weight, the ND filter and the constant 2.8 are very nice. I know that you made a very good review on de RXmk2 and I have a question regarding the black and white. Did you prefer the picture effect 'Rich B&W' over the 'normal' B &W? thanks and much respect for you're reviews.
It's about your preference not mine (unless for some inexplicable reason you're trying to emulate my style) that counts. And for my judgement, it greatly depends on the situation, the story I'm trying to tell and the mood I'm trying to capture.
Hi Maarten ... Thanks for making this video. Its over 2 years now since you posted this, would you still recommend the RX10 for 2020 or is there something better and cheaper out there... I currently have Nikon z6 with various lenses and im getting fed up of taking to much weight with me... I want something lighter and not taking up too much room... Thanks
I can't think of a camera think might be better and less expensive, and would still recommend this. However, I don't think I'd exchange the Z6 for this. I'd think about reducing the number of lenses I'm taking or find a camera bag/backpack that makes it easier to carry.
Hi Maarten, which SD card do you recommend for 4K video for Sony rx10 is? I tried delkin 64gb v90 UHS II but it failed after first minute of recording.
I recommend and use the SanDisk SDXC 64GB Extreme Pro C10 U3 type. You'll find it here: www.amazon.com/shop/maartenheilbron (You pay the same low price, I earn a small commission).
I just bought this camera. I love taking pictures of wildlife, birds in particular. I am having trouble with my pictures being clear and sharp. It seems that the birds face is always out of focus and I can't get a clear/sharp shot, like your eagle photo (or other pictures I see on Instagram). In your opinion, what settings are key to have set when trying to capture clear/sharp pictures for birds/wildlife?
Thanks for the informative video. I'm torn between buying this model now or waiting for the RX10 V, which is surely on the horizon, although no one knows for sure.. decisions decisions!
@@MaartenHeilbron Honestly, nothing, I'm just a regular consumer, not a photographer. But if I were to buy IV today and V came out next month with some better features, there will likely be a tinge of regret
@@AliYeah93 Well, whether it's a month or a year, it will happen. The trick is to be happy with your purchase and to look the other way when new models are released.
Thanks for your real life review. I bought this camera a month ago...and I've taken wonderful photos with it. Sometimes (I think) I miss the bokeh full-frame produce. One thing I've noticed (cause I also own the A7II and I'm keeping my old trustful 5D MKII) is that the jpegs this camera produces are more Canon-like than the A7II. They have less contrast and saturation and colors are more natural, so I tend to increase sharpness, contrast and saturation a bit more in Lightroom even in jpegs.
Good video. I just finished a vacation using the Sony RX IV for the first time. I shoot baseball at major league parks and it came off quite good. Auto focus is tricky when shooting action and you have to be on top of always and continually checking that it stays in. It's also fast enough for night games. One question about Lightroom 5 if you can answer: Whenever I export my finished picture, it never shows up in the folder I designate it to. It goes to some unrelated folder and I have to search all the folders to find it. Any thoughts on that?
Yes, focus is fast, but tricky. Im not sure why yours doesn't, mine does. I'm always creating new folders and sending the output there. Not sure what you're doing differently.
I thought I covered this, but I was happy with the low light performance, and ISO up to 6400. The RX10 IV has some more features for low light photography which I covered in my review, but didn’t use during this trip.
I think you could talk about the externals a bit. For example I had to Google to find out about the lens etc. So you could take some time to show us what we have outside.
As always, great video. Now that RX100 VI is out, wouldn't that be even better travel camera (unless you want bigger zoom)? Looking forward to your review of the RX100 VI.
@@MaartenHeilbron Awesome!! Looking forward to it. Please test how bad of a compromise is it to get more zoom compared to faster lens of previous models.
Another great video, Maarten! Thanks! Have you had any experience with variable ND Filters? I've had the original Sony RX10 since 2014 and I'm thinking about upgrading to the Mark IV, but the lack of an built-in ND filter might be a deal-breaker. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks again!
I would not buy a variable ND - I've tried a couple and always end up disappointed - the colour cast is unmanageable - or maybe I've purchased the wrong brand/model? Try a Tiffen kit that uses square filters so that you can re-use it on multiple cameras/lenses. There are lots of versions - bhpho.to/2wuScQj
Hi Martin. You got some great photos with this RX10IV. My question is, if given a choice between this and the RX100 VI which will you pick as a vacation camera. They share the same sensor, image processor etc. The only thing that differentiates the 2 cameras, is the lens. I reckon it will be horrible to use that tiny evf on the RX100 for an extended period of time and may end up looking like this🔜🤪?
I have the RX10 Mk I and the RX100 Mk II, which share the same sensor, being the lens the obvious difference. I take both with me on vacation, but use the larger one 90% of the time. If you don't care about carrying a camera around your neck, I'd suggest the RX10. Greetings from Brazil.
Johathan - I too would like to hear a P1000 review. I have both these cameras and I take both on nature walks. I find the RX10 the most capable for scenic and mood shots and the P1000 for those long shots that always seem to show up. I dislike the P1000 for 'normal' nature scenes if for no other reason that the sensor is pretty small and the low light response is poor. However, I have some amazing sunrise shots with it - the ability to zoom in to the sunrise gets you that wonderful frame awash with golden hour glow without Photoshopping the image. I certainly agree with Maarten's comment that the sensor size on the RX10, while only 1", seems to get some great photos. If I am just wandering around without a specific scene in mind, it is my preferred camera. Both cameras have 4K video but I must admit that I prefer still photos. If I was packing only one camera, I would not pack the P1000. We are going to Peru in a week and I'm taking the RX10 iv and an A6500 with a wide angle for night revelry shots without the bulk (I can carry the A6500 in a Peak design clip on my belt and it doesn't show).
@@ladykatepyro Thanks for your comments - they are in line with my experiences, but interesting to hear your first hand thoughts on the P1000. The Z7 is going to Thailand, so not yet sure when we'll get to the P1000.
@@MaartenHeilbron Z7? Whooot! I am anxious to hear your findings! I have the A7Riii and love it. I sold my 850 to convert to Sony. I still have a few Nikon lenses that I could match to the Z7. I'm becoming a mirrorless fan for sure.
Hey Maarten, I’d love to learn more about you and your photography preferences in addition to the great reviews you do. What are you personally shooting with, why, and what day-to-day things keep you inspired and engaged in the art? Cheers!
I'm not sure if I can say what inspires and engages me - I just enjoy trying things out, writing, shooting and editing, - and this enables me to do them all. Here's a behind the scenes look: th-cam.com/video/1Rqvdn4koaM/w-d-xo.html
The ergonomics are better than the A6000 and A7 series. I have the III that i take on day trips and I purchased a used I version at a great price. It does not have the dynamic range as the larger sensor, bit I think I can deal with the RX10iii and a A6300 with Sigma 30mm 1.4 for people photos or retails. the iv version seems to have great AF. but too pricey
Thanks for adding your thoughts and observations - but how did you conclude that the dynamic range is limited? While that seemed true for some JPEGs, when I worked with the RAW files, I found lots of range.
Have you used the GPS feature to sync with your phone using play memories? I have found it to be very useful when traveling. BTW, since you talk with Sony. Please. Have them bring time-lapse to this camera.
I do, yes. It is a useful travel feature. I know, right? Why did they remove downloadable apps and not add time-lapse to the firmware? I don't understand.
Hello Maarteen, May I ask you the name/reference of the camera strap you are using in this very nice review. It seems very light and very handy. Thank you in advance. Yves
It's my understanding that Sony changed their JPEG processing. I would like to point out that the number of colour profile selections and the optional settings for each no longer provide a single "colour science" for any camera or model. Manufacturers have provided these controls to enable you to create your own preferred "colour science". th-cam.com/video/vyodBImZ9A0/w-d-xo.html
I bought this camera for my recent vacation to SE Asia and was very satisfied. I was not in love with high ISO images at night but found them wholly usable. I even managed to convince the sig. other that it would meet her needs going forward and bought another for her. Thanks for the reviews. You're a great resource for the cameras I use and for river cruises I hope to sail in the future.
Thanks for this great exposé. I would like to try this camera for bird photograhy. I know us a Nikon D7500 + Nikkor 200-500 mm. What is your opinion on using the Sony for bird photograhy as to speed and sharpness is concerned. Thanks beforehand!
While the reach of the lens is tremendous, the sharpness (it's a one-inch sensor after all) and the speed, while better than the D7500, are not leading edge.
Maarten, Do you have any insights into how well the extended, Clear View zoom feature works that allows you to shoot at 35mm equivalents up to 1,200mm's? Very few reviewers tend to cover this and it sounds like it could be a big help in bird and wildlife photography.
I would not use it for stills, and would recommend that you shoot RAW, process and then crop to the final image. For video, the ClearImage zoom is useful, as the sensor's resolution exceeds the 8Mp image area of 4K.
Been using the Sony HX-400V and his superb 50X zoom (24-1200mm) for 10 years in all kinds of traveling conditions. Need to change...and I am wondering about the 25X zoom (24-600m) on the RX10 IV. Afraid to be disappointed...what would be your advise?
Clearly, the RX10 does not have the same range, so you might well be disappointed. My advice would be to rent or borrow one to make sure you'll be happy. I would ask though, why do you need to chage?
That's the sore point here - for as useful as it is, it's kind of pricey. I'm not sure that you'd find an equivalent solution at this price point - but there are some slightly less capable alternatives with lesser wallet impact. As for the 600mm shots, I thought they were - but please do check out the photos on flickr, where you can make your own judgment. Link in the description.
My wife has been shooting the RX-10 IV for about a year and it's truly a fantastic camera. We have several of her shots blown up to 16X20 and they are every bit as sharp as those taken with my D7200 and various Nikor and Sigma lenses. Very nice review.
I know, us too - and thanks for the kind words.
What a pleasure to read your kind words. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I'm always pleased to read that viewers have found a few tricks to add to their capabilities.
Thanks for letting me know - always nice to hear from a viewer who's finding my videos helpful.
I have just purchased a RX10 mk4, with your informative videos i hope to get the most out of it. Thank you. 👍🏻
Always nice to know my videos provide helpful assistance, thanks for commenting.
You are the Rick Steves of camera reviewers. Best review. Best photography. Stunning photos/videos. Excellent tips. Thank you for sharing. My Mark IV will be here in three days. I couldn't wait any longer for the Mark V. You restored faith in my purchase.
I appreciate the extremely kind words, I hope Rick does too :-)
After your in depth review of this camera some months ago, I decided to get it and I’m happy I did.
Thanks for the kind words, always nice to hear from a photographer who's found a camera to suit his needs.
i recently got my hands on one of these in my local camera shop.went in to ask about the new nikon p1000 and when they would have a demo..im Nikon through and through but the guy in the shop suggested i try the sony rx10 iv he has sitting there .....i was very impressed..the quality feel ..the features and omg that 600mm lens is superb.i can now understand why so many people are switching from canon/nikon to sony ..Ive just recently purchased a new nikon d5600 but im seriously considering selling it after only 4 weeks to buy the sony RX instead...never thought id like a bridge camera more then a dslr lol
good video as always and i you have a fantastic voice btw i could listen to you all day lol
I could read your comments all day! Thanks very much for taking the time to comment with such nice words, appreciated. Let me see if I can take the P1000 on an upcoming trip.
Maarten Heilbron that would be great .I'd hold off buying one until you review it lol
I appreciate your support, thanks!
Looking forward for your P1000 review, ive just pre-orderd mine (owned P900 3 years)... No exact news on release date in Australia tho, patience is a virtue said no-one waiting for a new camera
I'm looking forward to the opportunity to shoot with this - although I imagine in a few weeks, mirrorless Nikons is all anyone will want to see.
You certainly nailed it with the term "overachiever"! Even after downloading the 593-page Sony Help Guide pdf, there are still several things I can't quite figure out. Your video certainly raises my comfort level with having made the purchase. Thanks!
I appreciate your kind words, thank you.
Thank you I was tempted to pull out my own Sony RX 10 IV again and used it all day in a rose garden nearby RX 10 iv
Wonderful. Always nice to know that I've inspired a photographer to work on their skills and create pleasing images.
Well, this is a perfect "Real World Review" for this camera, well done Maarten!
You should go on vacation more often! ;)
Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback, it's always a pleasure to watch.
Thanks for the kind words, and your suggestion - more vacations are coming up!
Yes, Sony still feels that this is a competitive model, and I can't disagree.
Nice video... I made the mistake of ordering the Nikon P1000... disaster and anything past 600mm was awful... I just purchased today the Sony RX10 IV... thanks for a great review.
Glad to hear you found a camera that meets your needs, and thanks for your kind words.
Now that you've mentioned it, I'd forgotten being able to reassign the exposure button for video use in video mode. I also found the dedicated video button sometimes difficult to find. Thanks for the reminder, and for reinforcing the goodness of the '4's 1-inch sensor. Great video.
Always nice to know I've included good, useful details in my videos. Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.
The beauty of this camera is the fact that one doesn't have to carry around extra lenses. The quality is quite good and 4K is another bonus.
All good points, thanks for commenting.
That's not an issue that I observed.
I have had my RX10m4 for over a year and I have never experienced any of those problems.
@@rvg1997 Always nice to hear from a viewer with extensive experience. Thanks for your note.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts , always nice to hear real- world experiences.
@@doctortomasso211 hi, did you get , if yes how is it doing with birds ? Thanks
Always nice to hear from a viewer with kind words and thoughtful comments, thanks for taking the time.
Fun read, thanks for posting your comment and kind words.
Thanks for the kind words as well as your thoughts and reminiscences.
Beautiful and to the point.. like always! Keep on shooting and sharing with us!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
I like swimming analogies, thanks!
Thanks for the additional practical detail, appreciated.
Yes, I think that's suitable. And thanks for your kind words.
Thanks! Your well presented non biased opinions have made my mind up..... I’m buying one of these soon. Thanks Maarten.
Always nice to know I've provided useful information, thanks for your kind words.
Stephen M So, did you bought this? Are you satisfied?
@@MIKROBI219 Inquiring minds want to know!
As always love your reviews. Will consider this all in camera. Thanks.
Glad you like them! Thanks for your kind comment.
I would have to take another vacation just to process 4000 photos...
Or give up on sleep ...
love the versatility of this camera and I'm going to partner it with rx100vii.
From a matching perspective, that sounds like a good pairing.
I gave my 26 year old daughter all my camera gear when she moved to Colorado to become an outfitter( 10 year old Nikon stuff with lenses) and am looking to replace them. This Sony system looks to be a very good option for a rusty amateur
It is a good and easy to use camera with lots of features and light enough to be easy on your neck and shoulders.
Love all of your videos. Your reviews are fantastic! This video was no exception. Thank you!
Your kind comments are greatly appreciated, thanks for taking the time.
Another fab video of the RX10 IV, hope you enjoyed your European vacation. Thanks again for sharing 😀👍
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words - and we certainly enjoyed our Viking cruise.
How nice to hear from you, thanks for the kind words.
Fantastic review! I was thinking of buying it prior to going to my summer vacation and you helped me alot sir :)
Thanks, always nice to read that I've provided helpful information.
I bought this cam due to the restrictions of the airlines - so I couldn't take a big equipment with me. Now I have the Sony and my Nikon D850 with a 14-24mm lens: both in one backpack and exactly within the limitation of the allowed 8kg cabin luggage. Perfect.
Always nice to hear from a viewer who's found a solution that pleases.
Great video I recently purchased the RX10 and find the menu options overwhelming, it would be great if you could make a video and slow down a bit with the explanation on custom settings particularly HDR how to create a custom program so one can easily go from lets say P to custom keep up the great work
TH-cam does have settings to view the video at a slower speed.
Mine will be delivered tomorrow Hope to review mine with your settings
Thanks for the update, enjoy your travels.
Yes, it was a cute place to stop - as you described. And thank you for your kind words, always appreciated.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I remember being sceptical when I got the RX100m1 to review, but ended up being impressed.
Sir can I get a used mark 1 now
If it's the right price, in good condition and later models don't have any features you need, go ahead.
I'd love that at some point you get your hands on a Panasonic FZ2500 to review and compare to the RX10 IV.
Yes, that's an excellent suggestion.
Good job Maarten, did you try using LCD in the sunny day? I found it very challenging even when turned to sunny weather. I’m thinking to apply anti glare Matt, but not sure which on is the best and not degrading the display clarity.
Although I usually use the viewfinder, I did and didn't have issues. Kim did however have trouble with the LCD, even in sunny weather mode.
Nice video as always and stunning shots.
Just a question, i heard alot of people use clip on glass on zoom cameras for macro and super macro shots. Is there any glass that i can use for my rx10 m4.
By the way it good to see your videos and know about the menus bcz i still havent used all of them.
I'm not aware of any - but check at B&H. For more on the RX10 IV - here's my full review: th-cam.com/video/YGqeezyuifg/w-d-xo.html
Try the Fujifilm X-E3, if you can still find one. th-cam.com/video/cv0JUtt6g5E/w-d-xo.html
Unless you want the long zoom the RX10 IV offers, in which case (as long as you don't mind the size) it's a terrific camera for travel, not so much street.
Thanks for the kind words - and I'm sorry I missed to opportunity to meet, as I always enjoy your comments.
Nice review. Since you’ve reviewed both the Sony RX10 IV and the Nikon P900, how do they compare? Your thoughts?
I have not reviewed the P900, so can't compare, sorry.
@@MaartenHeilbron if you made this clip for fun I will buy this camera . Because these pics you took are so beautiful . Thanks !
@@letran-kz7pw Glad to read that you enjoyed them, thanks for your kind words.
Thank you!
Looks like a great trip, Sony let me try out that camera really nice
Yes, an excellent experience both with the Viking Cruise and the Sony camera.
As always great video. May I’m wrong, but the color and the image quality is like a phone pictures !!! With this price !!!
I think you are wrong - this camera is capable of much more than a phone.
Really enjoyed your take on the RX10 IV. Sounds like a great travel camera? How does the weight compare to the Fuji X-T4?
Depending on the lens you're putting on the X-T4, the RX10 IV is lighter. Thanks for your kind words.
Regarding your Panoramic WIDE and DOWN settings, the image was very long vertically but narrow horizontally?
Can you explain in more detail how to make this work as you suggested.
Use wide and down - turn the camera sideways and pan left to right - this will give both the tallest and widest pixel count.
My RX10 mk I is limited to 12 MP in pano. Pretty low resolution for a pano, to my taste. I miss the 40 MP that I got with my old HX200V. What about the RX10 mk IV?
In up down, standard is 3872x2160, wide is 5536x2160. If you pan left/right it's 8192x1856, wide 12416x1856.
Maarten Heilbron Thank you very much. I've just learnt how to do it on computer using the ICE free software, so in camera low resolution panorama won't be an issue anymore. Have a nice day, greetings from Brazil.
Always glad to hear that a viewer has found a suitable solution, thanks for commenting.
Very good and helpfull video! Do you think this camera is also good for sport videos?
In many ways, yes it is.
@@MaartenHeilbron indeed, specially not apsc which Sony is not doing much for as their focus is FF
I think they make some excellent models in each sensor class.
Great video, this place look astounding thank to yours shots! One more subscriber :)
Thanks for the kind words, and the subscription, both are appreciated.
@@MaartenHeilbron You're so right 😀 thanks
I would use continuous. Try using a smaller (F8) aperture or a smaller focus point - but if you have already tried those, I'm out of ideas.
Great review Mr Maarten!!!! Going know to get one!!!! Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated.
Thanks for the informative video. I'm torn between buying this model now or waiting for the RX10 V, which is surely on the horizon, although no one knows for sure.. decisions decisions!
What additional features or functions would you be hoping for the RX10 V?
@@MaartenHeilbron Honestly, nothing, I'm just a regular consumer, not a photographer. But if I were to buy IV today and V came out next month with some better features, there will likely be a tinge of regret
@@AliYeah93 Well, whether it's a month or a year, it will happen. The trick is to be happy with your purchase and to look the other way when new models are released.
How is the performance for the birds and wild life photography for this camera...?
With that zoom lens, it's excellent.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you..
Always happy to help.
I agree - I think that Sony recently made some adjustments to the colour processing. The skin tones are clearly better.
I use this camera daily, can't wait until we get the Z battery, and hopefully it starts up quicker on the next version.
Those are excellent items for the wish list.
Hi, Nice video ! How does the camera behave in low light situations (churches) and how high can you raise the ISO keeping good image quality?
Thanks
I thought I covered this, but I was happy with the low light performance, and ISO up to 6400. The RX10 IV has some more features for low light photography which I covered in my review, but didn’t use during this trip.
Great videos, thank you! What is this nice cushy strap you were using? I'd love to get one.
Thanks for your kind words. I was waiting for someone to ask that question. They come from www.capturingcouture.com
@@AngeloProMusician Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for the suggestion.
Very detailed review. You know your stuff.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Thank you, great narration and explanations.
That's very kind of you to say, and your comments are appreciated.
Fantastic reviews. What is the brand of the lovely strap?
There's a link in the description to Capturing Couture.
I think you could talk about the externals a bit. For example I had to Google to find out about the lens etc. So you could take some time to show us what we have outside.
Right. I covered that in my full review: th-cam.com/video/YGqeezyuifg/w-d-xo.html
Oh! somehow I missed that. Never mind. :)
No worries, always nice to have your comments on my videos.
As always, great video.
Now that RX100 VI is out, wouldn't that be even better travel camera (unless you want bigger zoom)? Looking forward to your review of the RX100 VI.
I’m currently travelling with the RX100 VI, so expect a review with this conclusion soon.
@@MaartenHeilbron Awesome!! Looking forward to it. Please test how bad of a compromise is it to get more zoom compared to faster lens of previous models.
I will certainly consider that issue.
the rx10 is a great camera
thanks for sharing your hacks with us :)
It's always my pleasure, I'm happy to help - and I do appreciate your kind words, thank you.
Thanks, Maarten! I really appreciate this advice and your videos!
I'm always happy to help.
Great question - but I've just started a trip to France with the RX100 VI - I'll post my review in few weeks. At first glance, it's going fine.
Good thought, thanks for the comment.
A great useful review, which shows how usable the camera and the images are. Would be interesting to see similar reviews of the Nikon P1000.
Thanks, your kind words are appreciated - I've put your suggestion on the "to-do" list. Maybe for Thailand in November.
@@ladykatepyro There's much to like about the Z7, particularly if you're a Nikon fan. I would not be in a hurry to trade in an A7RIII.
Thank you for your video!!. Do you think that a new RX10.. is coming?. Greetings from Argentina.
I have no idea. Check with the sonyrumors web site. Thanks for the kind words, do please say hello to all my friends in Argentina.
Yves
Yes, it is light and comfortable. It's from Chasing Couture.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you Maarten for your prompt reply, just bought one from Amazon.
Hi i have the rx10 m3 i notice the m4 has better colors does it have the new sony color science?
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. And for your observations, it's always interesting to hear about my viewer's experiences.
The trade off between size and focal length is well worth it
I thought so too!
An outstanding video. Thank you!
Always my pleasure, and thanks for the kind words.
Great videos on the RX10 IV. One question, what is the FPS on RAW mode. Is the 24 FPS on JPEG only? thanks!
Thanks for the kind words. I tested burst only with JPEG (24 fps for ten seconds) but not with RAW.
od, the rx10mk4 can shoot at 24FPS in RAW mode. I am using it for birds in flight and am getting fantastic results

Thanks for adding this information, and thanks for sharing your spectacular shots!
Maarten Heilbron, thank you for the compliment and you are welcome
Maarten, do you think it is worth the money ? And we’re shots at 600mm sharp ?
That's the sore point here - for as useful as it is, it's kind of pricey. I'm not sure that you'd find an equivalent solution at this price point - but there are some slightly less capable alternatives with lesser wallet impact. As for the 600mm shots, I thought they were - but please do check out the photos on flickr, where you can make your own judgment. Link in the description.
Hey Maarten it was mentioned in The video that you often ask for cameras does that include the Panasonic GX85 as well? Or do you have a personal one?
I borrowed the GX85 from Panasonic Canada when I reviewed it.
Maarten Heilbron ohhh okay 👍
