    This is without doubt one of the best instructional videos on You Tube. I've owned perhaps 20 different cameras over the years. I will soon buy both an RX100 vi and an RX10 iv. I have White's books and Friedman's books on both cameras. But I've learned more in 35 minutes from this video than I could have gotten from the books in a week. Subscribed to your channel, obviously.

  • @nikmills

    I want the ND filters - but I also like this Favorites Menu. So the 100VA has both.
    My question is if I gave up the Favorites Menu and bought a much cheaper 100V, isn't the Function Button going to basically be a kind of poor man's Favorites Menu?
    I see the difference, Favorites is really cool, but.... how much cooler is it than using the Function Button? Is it worth chasing the VA just for Favorites?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would won't both, but must have the built in ND filters knowing what I know now these days. The favorites menu is really nice, because you can load it with almost any setting and it's hard to find settings in the Sony menus! The Function menu you can't load with any setting, only some settings... so they are different things really... If you use a lot of different camera modes and settings I would go for the VA, because otherwise you might get frustrated with the Menus in my opinion over time, knowing you could have got the camera that has favorites which helps...

    Hi Jay. Wanted to ask a question but couldn't find your "Contact Us" portion on the new web site. I have had a few Sony cameras so I'm familiar with their menu system. The problem I'm have is trying to capture stills with the camera in standard HD video mode, each time I press the shutter the camera stops recording. If I go to AUTO or P mode I'm able to capture ok with out stopping the video. Is this normal? There seems to be no mention in the manual regarding this. I like to use the HD Video mode selector on the dial because it will give me the 16x9 framing before starting to record as apposed to being in auto and forcing the camera into video mode from the rear movie selector button. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Ken from Canada

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kenneth, You can't capture stills while recording video. You need to do that after the fact in the playback mode area when watching the video you recorded after the fact. Then you can capture a frame from the recording....
      Display the movie that you want to capture as a still image.
      MENU → (Playback) → [Photo Capture].
      Play back the movie and pause it.
      Find the desired scene using forward slow playback, reverse slow playback, displays the next frame, and displays the previous frame, and then stop the movie.
      Press (Photo Capture) to capture the chosen scene.

    The hidden feature that make this camera unusable normally in 4K the screen goes so dim so you can't see anything on it on a sunny day. I bought one at the weekend, and had to go back to using my iPhone. It is all well and good having the best in class image processing, but if you can't even see what you are taking videos of - it is pretty redundant and uselsss!

    Hello I am having problems viewing my videos. There is an arrow when I select the button to view but when I hit the arrow on the screen nothing happens. Also, when I use the lighting device to transfer my photos to my iPad, the videos don’t seem to have been transferred. I am only able to see the photos on the iPad. I watched your video to learn how to shoot and view a video. I am pushing the red record button but can not view the video. Therefore I am not sure that I am actually shooting a video.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The screen does not work as a touch when using the menu and navigating the camera, only for focus type stuff. So you have to use the direction pad on the back of the camera like I show you in the video. To view you would need to hit the playback button and then the center button on the directional pad to "select" the clip and play it. As far as transferring files to the iPad that is harder to say. The iPad might not see the files, or they might not have transferred I'm not sure sorry Amy. I'm guessing when you are using the lightning device you are not selecting the videos from the folder, and only selecting the photos? They are in different folders.. Please check out this another short tutorial on transferring photos and videos that might help you out: th-cam.com/video/Uc8LQMRd2Pc/w-d-xo.html

    any way of getting a good bokeh for portrait shots instead of just macros?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your best bet for the maximum bokeh effect with this camera and portraits would be to get the background scene as far as possible from your portrait subject. Then zoom in to 200mm effective with the camera and get as close to your model as possible depending on how you want to frame the shot.The further the background is in relation to your subject will ultimately determine how out of focus the background looks. Or in other words, the best Bokeh effect. Larger sensor cameras and/or faster lenses make this much easier, and the backgrounds do not need to be near as far, just to give you a little more information. WIth this camera however, I would start with the tips I just gave you and then play around from there. I hope that helps!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 5 has a faster f/1.8 lens @ max aperture 24mm, and also has less zoom range of 24-70mm effective... The 6 and 7 have a slower f/2.8 max aperture at 24mm, but have the incredible 24-200mm zoom range. The newer models have better autofocus and a few other features like longer record times and video performance with tracking subjects... My highly detailed review for the RX100 VII is here: th-cam.com/video/XYLUGCnGOOw/w-d-xo.html In that video I briefly go over the upgrades from the Rx100 VI and older models as well... You can also transfer the photos and videos with the Imaging Edge App, but it's not the best performing app. You can use the app to control the camera as well, for photos and video, and Sony does sell remotes, and a remote grip I reviewed here: th-cam.com/video/E8PadrXIv7Q/w-d-xo.html

    Re Memory Recall: The are actually several pages of items for saving to up to 7 memory banks. This is about 90 items of data spread over about 10 pages. Use the rocker down area when in Memory Recall to see all pages. This feature is so much more powerful than the function button or My Menu which only allow you to change settings one by one. With Memory Recall, changing to a different memory bank can change many settings simultaneously. A real time saver. Memory Recall also can store the screen view as well as the horizontal and vertical default focus points for flexible spot. Documentation in the RX100 m6 Help Guide is very poor. This topic could use a comprehensive video if you don’t already have one. It took me about a month to appreciate all of the nuances of Memory Recall after I bought the original RX100, which is far less powerful (only 3 banks and many fewer pages of data).

    There really isn’t anything for the Sony RX 100 V that I can find on TH-cam in terms of setting up Still photography for optimum image quality. Most of it is for video set up. Not sure why. Have you done any videos on the RX 100 V set up for optimal quality?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, photography with a point and shoot is a bit simpler than video I suppose ;) Also, the depth of field is not that much on the 1" sensor cameras it often does not matter as much what aperture your at and so fourth. I would recommend shooting raw and exposing for the highlights when the situation arises. You can recover shadows easier than highlights in post. Make sure your shutter speed is fast enough for whatever you're shooting if freezing the action is required. Be sure to use a tripod and self timer for slower shutter speeds if you want to blur the action or just get the sharpest shot possible. The rest would really be composition which is a art in itself... I can't really think of any other settings I would change to alter my photos or make them better. I hope that helps, Jay

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the camera will do a fine job for you ;) The look I particularly like is when the subject is separated from the background as much as possible. That makes the images look 3d and really emphasizes the subject. To do that with the RX100 VI you would really need to have the background as far away as possible from your wife. You can then zoom in to 200mm and walk backwards until you have the shot framed how you like. As long as the background is really far from your wife, it should blur or pretty good. You can also use some of the picture effects to add some drama if you want. I would play around with those in advance so you can get an idea on which ones you want to use if any.

    Awesome video. So how well does this camera (or any camera) do when shooting a video, and lets say it’s in Auto, Program, or Aperture mode and the camera has to pick a shutter speed... does it pick a shutter speed that obeys the 180 degree shutter speed rule, or is it close to that? What about when zooming out, does it keep the shutter speed close to the 180 rule, or goes the shutter speed increase as if its following the focal length rule.
    It’s always perplexed me on why these cameras don’t have a menu option to force the 180 degree rule (if possible to obtain). It could basically use the shutter Priority logic, and force the shutter speed to be 1 / 2 x FPS

      Hi John, It sounds like you need a better faster memory card to record in 4k video quality. I have this affordable SanDisk 64GB SDXC card (amzn.to/2Wwe5e3) and it works awesome! If you can’t get a new card and still want to record, you will need to change the settings to 1080 @ 24, 30, or 60 frames per second. 1080 @ 120 frames per second and 4k require the faster card.
      I hope that helps,

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I believe what you are describing is the camera showing you where the blown highlights and shadows are. In other words, the actual black and white parts of the image. This helpful for exposure adjustments if you are trying to capture more detail in either the highlights or the shadow. If you see blinking in one or the other, you can then adjust the camera to fine tune the exposure as desired.
