Sony RX100 VII vs RX100 VA - Which is better?

  • Aaron talks about why you might actually want the Sony RX100 VA instead of the latest VII model. The VA model has several reasons why it’s vastly superior to the super-zoom VII. Even though the VII has a microphone port, the VA actually gives you speed that costs $1000’s in the SLR world at a cheaper price.

    I agree completely. I just bought the 5A about a week ago, and could have chosen the VI or VII. But, along with the things you pointed out, I realized lately that I hardly ever even touched the zoom on my Lumix LX100, original RX100 or any other camera, and if so, only by small amount! An old Canon SX50HS (50X optical) just gathers dust in my apartment, along with another high-zoom, recent Lumix I barely use. Besides, if I really want lots of extra zoom on the 5A, the semi-digital 'clear image zoom' can probably come close to the quality of the extended optical zoom on the VI and VII, and can be further tweaked in post production, if necessary to look almost as good. And (with lots of megapixels), photos can be cropped substantially as well, in order to bring a subject closer in post production. Big zoom is always tempting at first- but then, how often do we really use it? Plus (here in Canada anyway) $600 more for the V!!?!! Hell, I may as well go buy the Nikon P1000 (for 125X optical zoom), take a few videos and photos of the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and it's moons like everyone else, then let that camera gather dust too.

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. Faster is far more valuable. I’ve wanted for more zoom sometimes but not at the expense of 1-2.3 stops loss, especially shooting video.

I know the Canon G5X and G7X are different "beasts", and have their own Pros and Cons, but you have given me plenty to think about if I decide to go Sony. I tend to agree that the faster lens of the VA could will push me that way for a good all round travel camera. Thanks.

    Went to England with my Lumix LX100 a few months before I got the Sony RX100 VA, and (like the year before) there were problems with the hard-to-get-at, tiny recording button in the back. Both years, I lost some great footage, as the recording light would blink on and off, so you couldn't tell if it was recording or not, and I didn't always have the opportunity to retake the video! The video, and still image quality was fine, but I've had it with that camera!! Ironically, the much cheaper Lumix ZS60 I brought (less than half the price!) was far more dependable! Anyway, when the LX100 'did' record video, it had a wonderful little helper, whilst traversing around London- a Zhiyun Crane M2! So, now that I have the even smaller, and lighter, Sony RX100VA, I can't wait to return to England with that propped up onto my little Zhiyun Crane M2! But (like the rest of the world) I have to wait for the damned pandemic to settle down!

      Though one year down the line, (saw this video just now), here's a tip if it still helps. Get a gimbal called Hohem iSteady Multi (quite cheap). This gimbal supports the Sony Rx 100 series of cameras (except the original Rx 100) with a cable that can take a snap or start/stop recording directly from a button on the gimbal. I have personally used it on RX100 iii.

    I often have been finding I get better film and stabilization from my Samsung S10 phone than my RX100 VII depending on the situation. The very narrow field of view for selfie length shots is a challange. Shooting film while driving down bumpy New Orleans streets with lots of potholes really needs a gimbal but between the S10 phone and the VII I think the phone does better with stabilization. I also seem to get more artifacts and large square pixilations in the VII footage I don't see from the phone shot in the same environment. I can get much better night shots and pictures of the moon from the VII with the greater control over the ISO, larger sensor and zoom.

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using the smart stabilizer mode on the RX100? It has 4 different modes (as you may know?). The higher level of stabilizing does cut down the field of view - that does make shooting selfies a lot tougher.

    • @NOLAGent1
      @NOLAGent1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ALinsdau I have used all the levels of stabilization and the S20 phone stabilization works better in most situations along with giving a wider field of view. The VII just going into video crops the field of view from the photo mode. The VII takes great photos but the video leaves a lot to be desired. I found a good written review I posted a link to below that covers a lot of the challenges with the VII that I wish I would have read before I got the VII. I also got the grip kit and half the time the buttons don't work on the grip as the wired connection to the camera comes loose too easy. The VII maybe could be improved with a software update or maybe when they put out the next model VIII with fixes but for the price of this camera it failed to deliver in many ways.

    I could get over the 2.8 aperture since the sensor is so small, that 1.3 stops isn't really that big a deal, esp when I have an APS-C camera as well. But I'm truly baffled as to why Sony removed the ND filter.

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ND filter at f/2.8 makes it really dark/slow. That was the unfortunate trade. I'd much rather have an f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens than a 200mm zoom. The lens, for me, will always be more valuable.

    Yeah, i like the 200 zoom of the new Sony RX100 vii. And i am glad they finally added an ext mic jack...BUT i wish it had an f1.8 lens. I also wish it had an internal ND filter like the new Canon G7Xiii. I hope Sony releases an update to the VA with an f1.8 lens. I would probably go for that over the RX100 Vii

    Guys one thing, would you use a magfilter 58 mm or a 52 mm for a sony RX100 VA?

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can’t add a front filter to any of the RX100 series. There are no filter threads and the lens retracts behind a metal iris.

    I gave you a thumbs up but I'm not going to subscribe. However, I AM 100% in agreement with your reasoning behind preferring the IIIa over the VII. The ability to shoot in low light at lower ISO settings AND (you neglected to mention) the ability to get shallow depth of field, i.e. creamier bokeh, softer back and foregrounds totally trumps all the other advantages of the VII. You are one of the CHOSEN beings with SUPERIOR perception and taste. The supreme being has spoken.

    so the rx100va has a 124-70 1.8-2.8 lens and the rx100vii has a 24-200 2.8-4.5 lens .How is that 2 stops of a difference ?! It's 1,3 stops , not two. A full stop is from 1.4-2.0-2.8-4.0-5.6-8.0 etc . If the rx100Va would have a touch screen, mic in and a bigger battery i would have bought it when it was released. Also if the VII would have had maybe a 24-200 2.0-4.0 lens, a nd filter and a bigger battery i would have also bought it instantly. Sony just doesn't want to give it all and make a perfect camera.
    PS: also making reviews in 480p ? Really ? It's 2019 , not 2009 , at least use 1080p.

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Technically correct - the wide angle difference isn't quite 2 stops. Going from 1.8 to 2.8 is substantial, though. The bigger battery would be huge - I went through 3 batteries filming my winter camp last week. However, the camera would have to be bigger.
      Having an ND on a 2.8-4.5 lens doesn't make a lot of sense except in bright daylight.
      I really don't like eating hard drives alive for review videos at 1080p since 87% are mobile views. I've started uploading in 720p so it look a bit better - it's a balancing act.
