I've had the RX 100V for about a year, and couldn't be happier with it as a Vlogger. The built-in ND filter is the bomb!
Would you mind sharing what settings you are using for your daily vlogging? Wind noise seems a little strong outdoors, have you added anything over the mic openings to help with this? Thanks!
@@radeaver Excellent question! I do not use the in-camera mic. I bought a Purple Panda lavaliere mic ($23?? on Amazon) and the Zoom H1 recorder ($120?? at Amazon: I see Amazon is offering the Zoom H1 bundle which includes a lavaliere mic). I never use any in-camera mic, unless it's an emergency, as the sound quality just isn't possible. Just about all external mics will come with a "dead cat" or some sort of "pop" protection for wind noise reduction. The DOWN SIDE, is that you will need to synch your sound with your video in some editing software. IMovie for Apple makes synching sort of easy. I don't own a PC, but I'm sure basic editing software is out there too. As to other vlogging setting, I shoot in "Aperture" mode mostly, so that I can control background blur. When I'm run-and-gun, I often use "Auto." This little camera is amazing with its ability to figure out settings, so I let it do it's thing. Many have compared this little guy to a mini-a9!

Damn I want this little camera. It would be great to carry around for snapshots as opposed to dragging my Nikon and lenses around. The feature set seems pretty impressive for a camera that small.
I bought the 5a because of the brighter lens. My ideal would have been the touchscreen, the brighter lens and bluetooth. In the end, the brighter lens is far more important for my shooting style than the ability to zoom more.

I'm here now with my Amazon cart open deciding between the VA and VI - I also shoot a lot indoors and NEED a hella fast camera when it comes to snapping pics say in moving vehicles or just seeing something exciting and needing to get a CLEAR snap as fast as possible! (I have a whole category of pictures named "Missed Opportunities" w/out of focus pics / partially out of frame subjects etc., from all the various (SLOW!) cameras I've used in my day - I'm try to eliminate that series as much as I can moving forwards!)
I do like the 200mm and the viewfinder of the VI though - all this started for me looking to replace my PowerShot sx720 hs (40X zoom) which really comes in handy for me, with a sx740 hs, but started to look around to see if the "grass was greener" elsewhere - so I don't know if I can really be happy w/just 70mm? Digital zoom isn't off the table for me, but I would obviously like to avoid it totally.
I also don't like most touch screens because I do a lot of hip shooting (camera down by my leg / pant pocket) and my fingers tend to trigger a lot of unwanted settings changes w/my prior cameras (e.g. older GoPros); if there's something like a touch "lock out" timer in the VI, where presses are ignored, that would be great??
Finally, I'm torn between buying an "older" camera (VA with better speed) OR the newer camera VI w/4K & less speed, and a loss of some features along with a better view finder and 200mm...

Not bad, the Sony rx100 series is never cheap but you get great image quality for it's sensor size. And it is so handy.

I am a casual travel photographer. I mostly take landscapes and very few portraits in both day and night times while travelling. Please suggest what would be the best options between RX100 VA and RX100 VII.

Thank you Henry, and no I only used the Sony batteries... As far as accessories, I only used a mini tripod pretty much as I was trying to keep the weight to a minimum usually when using this kit. Gimbals are fun for that butter smooth footage, and I would consider a microphone for better audio quality. In addition, because the battery life is not that good I carry around a little battery bank I found on amazon for like $20 with me now so I can easily charge in the field in between stops...

Hi. Jay. Great vídeos all the time👌🏻. I’m looking to get a pocket camera I can carry with me all the time. I’m interested on the RX100v. When comparing the rx100Va to the rx100V, only for portrait photography. Is real time eye-af supported only on rx100Va and newest models. This is the only feature that will make me decide if I buy the rx100Va over the rx100V. Is there eye-af on af-c mode for the rx100V. What’s the difference in performance.? I mainly shoot pictures of my kids. Thanks keep up the great work.👍🏻
Yeah, the V has Eye-AF and it's very similar to the VA. Only the VII has the more advanced realtime tracking... You will need to program that feature to one of the custom button locations in order to use it and the camera must recognise a face for it to activate as well. MENU → (Custom Settings) → [Custom Key(Shoot.)] → assign the [Eye AF] function to the desired button. Point the camera at a person's face, and press the button to which you have assigned the [Eye AF] function. Press the shutter button while pressing the button.
The shallow Dof still suprise me for an one inch sensor...

I'm sorry, but these cameras just keep getting better and better ;) The RX100 series as I get older and less willing to carry heavy gear, gets more and more appealing I gatta say. But then when I do shoot full frame, I'm always like, oh yeah, that is why I prefer the larger sensor...

Unfortunately, I broke both my ankles since I wrote that comment so active photography had to take a back seat for a while ( not lens buying though!) Still looking at getting a rx100 and still leaning toward the VA model in March 2020 just to have a small camera to throw in a bag when carrying my a7iii is too much.

Thank you and for low light use I would go with the RX100 VA (bhpho.to/2ROWQBR) for sure. The f/1.8 lens makes a big difference in my opinion and overall image quality is near identical to the VI and VII.
Jay SonyAlphaLab I’m trying to decide between the va and the vi right now. I’m going to shoot landscapes and kids. Which would you suggest? Do you think the va has enough detail to where I can just crop the picture for zoom instead of getting the vi? Also when you zoom on the vi, do you lose detail?
I have a Samsung NX500 APS-C with a 30mm f2 lens, would the Sony RX100V improve the video quality despite the samller sensor?
Nice review. Just a nitpick: around 10:30 you mentioned that noise starts to become visible at ISO 6400, but the amount of noise depends a lot on the light. The studio test scene seems to have pretty good lighting. Under the conditions where people would normally use high ISO, I bet it would be visible much lower. Even my APS-C EOS M50 has noticeable noise at ISO 1600, so I think that statement is a bit misleading. Real-world pictures at high ISO would probably give a more practical idea of the noise.
That is totally fair to say. You do start to see the noise at around ISO 800, but when it really becomes an issue to the point of not worth using is ISO 6400 I would say for a correction ;) Thank you for the feedback! Jay

the camera is very hot, the heat warning showing on screen very quickly soon after start shooting for 10 mins. and the screen start dimming after a short blink. I'm not sure, what's wrong?
Great review indeed. What would you suggest between VA and VI for portrait photography? I mostly shoot outdoors. I am tempting for that extra reach on VI. Will that affect quality of portraits? I think 200mm 4.5 will give better results than 70mm 2.8. Can you please help me decide? Portraits is my topmost priority.
Hello, I would rather have the 200mm f/4.5 over the 70mm f/2.8 for portraits specifically assuming you have the space to work, but both will do a good job in the real world. 200mm will yield you better separation, but the background will need to be pretty far away for a buttery bokeh with either camera.

Good video, thanks. Just a question. In Manual, when I select Flexible spot (to move my focus around) then Shutter Speed is disabled. Apparently, I have not full manual control: Apertures, Shutter Speed, focus, etc. Is it because I don't know how to make work or a camera limitation? Thanks. :)
You can't have the camera active flexible mode. You need to select the focus point separate from the exposure controls. Also, depending on which camera you have, touch focus is a great option!
I’m trying to decide between the Rx100 VA and the Rx100 VI. Which one would you recommend for a travel camera. I like that the VA has the build in ND filter and 1.8. But would the bigger zoom and additional features be worth the $300 upgrade. I’m also considering the canon G7x mark ii because I’m use to canon but the Sony’s have better features. Hello Dr Sullivan ;) It really depends on if you want that zoom and touchscreen I would say. Otherwise I would go for the faster lens and 3-0stop ND filter equipped RX100 VA... Really is personal preference. Depending on the types of trips, I would probably go for the zoom, but if I new I was taking lots of water shots and low light stuff, then I would go for the VA for the faster optic and ND filter... Not an easy decision, I here ya. The Canon also looks like a great option in the real world...

라사 I ended up getting the RX100 VI and I’m happy with the decision. For traveling the extra zoom made me go for the VI. Jays videos are very helpful for learning the menu system and camera functions.
theres one thing you can't see , is that the VI drops from 2.8 to 5.4 very quickly as soon as you start to zoom in. so basically at 40mm is already at F.4

hello I ask you who are a super expert I have the rx100 iv I would like to switch to the mark v or the va because of the autofocus and the best buffer and the.chip lsi but in terms of image quality they are superior to my mark iv?
Hey Jay- I think someone asked you this below, but since it’s been awhile I wondered if you might have more info. I used a friend’s Mark 6 and the color science for JPEGs was noticeably different than every RX100 I’ve owed or used before. It was more like a Canon 5d - specifically when it came to skin tones. I’m considering getting a Mark 5A but I wonder if that color science carried over since they released it after the 6. Any idea? I know the 5A is lacking the Slog3 - so maybe color enhancements didn’t make the cut across the board. I see a lot of people asking about it online and you always seem to have the most SONY intel- let me know what you think. Thanks! (PS Just to clarify - that color rendering on the 6 was excellent and preferred. That’s why I’m hoping it’s in the 5A.)
I believe so based on the updated better image quality. You can also change the creative modes to alter the colors in a variety of ways. Portrait is one of the options, as is Neutral tones encase you were unaware. Those modes can also be customized to further adjust one way or another.
Regarding the Mk 6 - I am put off by the low light abilities and lack of an ND filter. I am very tempted by the Mk VA, but without the timelapse app is there a reasonable priced and travel-friendly device to create timelapse photography?

Yes it's possible with one of the magnet filter kits like this one: amzn.to/2q2esyc You can then use a ND filter just like any other lens. The Canon g5x mark 2 is also a great option for sure, but it does not have a mic input and the auto focus is not near as good or fast as the RX100 VII.

Great video but maybe it went a little bit quick. The panorama wasn’t particularly high resolution. 7064 x 1600 is just 11 mp. That’s less than an original file.

I love my RX100 V. I like shooting timelapses with the app so im glad I didn't get the VA.
Paul Matthew Hill For around $40 you can get the Vello RC S2ii Shutterboss version II Timer which can be set for timelapses that run until your battery runs out, is great as a remote shutter and is generally better than the app with one exception. It cant stitch the photos into a movie like the app can, however, that is easy to do at the editing stage.
@@artistjoh its not possible to have external timelapse and powerbank at the same time. Also its another thing you need to bring with you where the app is built in. Crazy that sony not includes a timelapse built in such an expesive camera.
Stefan Öhlin The reason the Sony app store failed is because there were too many other options built into other cameras. The execs talk themselves into nickle and dime-ing us for fundamental features and tick off the camera users, and they wonder why few people pay the few dollars extra. In my case I was prepared to pay for the app but I could never get it to complete the transaction, so I ended up saying ‘stuff them’ and used alternatives. They can’t make many sales if the internet connections and software are flaky. The app concept might have looked good on paper to management but customers were mostly not impressed. All these companies make dumb decisions from time to time. This and the lack of fully articulated screens are Sony’s big moments of dumbness.
do you think it would be worth to buy this, if I'm not too happy with the quality of iPhone 13m photos ? or this investment wouldn't be wise?
So.. a guy I know has one of these for sale...He used it on one trip to Asia,,,that's it....3 weeks on a trip and it got put away.. I have looked it over,,seems perfect..he even added the stick on grip...He is letting me have it for $500. I need another camera like I need another wife.....(the 55+ nagging kind)....but the big aperture and the built in ND filter with the video features really appeal to me. I think your tests have put this over the top for me--- He owes you a beer....or 12.

@@Jason_Hermann --Hey--I am going to pick this up,,probably will see him middle of next month-I want to give it a try--especially to stay in the Sony family--I have an NEX-6 and a couple of A mount DSLTs---A few months ago I did buy a Lumix 850 with their pancake zoom and the 45-150,,,again it was like new almost and was only $350 for all,,I will do some playing and if I decide to move the Sony ,,perhaps only for the non -interchangeable lens,,,You will get first crack.. Thanks again for the most important and (unfortunately) least used Sony photo resource on the net. It drives me crazy that someone like "Technology Mafia" gets so many views when he barely knows which end of a camera to look through,,,,sigh....You do outstanding tests and produce fantastic images,,,,,

I don't know about that, sorry. I did not read anything on that in the description and I did not notice and color differences like I did in the A7 III and A9 for example. If anything it's a very slight difference...

I tried to install timelapse app from playmemoriescameraapps.com, but the usb connection from camera to pc never successfully verified.. since i cannot see the application icon on the camera's menu, make me wondering is it compatible with the mark VA to install any apps?
The playmemories apps do not work on the RX100 VA. Sorry to inform you of that fact Abraham.

Hey there, The Ronin DJI RS3 Mini will work for both cameras: geni.us/aqJ3rx As far as cinema looking video goes, there is no setting specific for that on either of these cameras. It's just using a good lens at good angles with proper motion at the "correct" exposure for the given scene... Practice and using manual camera settings will allow for more creativity once you get them mastered... I have lots of tutorials on both cameras if you want to learn more!

What kind of settings that i should change.
It's hard to get good bokeh with such a small sensor, but you can if you are very close to your subject and the background is far away. I would set the aperture to the lowest number for this...

The A7c would be the same deal for maximum bokeh... Get as close as you can to your subject with the lowest aperture number and the background as far away as possible. Faster aperture lenses will give you more bokeh, but you can get bokeh with any lens on the A7C... I use the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens for my talking head footage in my recent videos for example and that is at f/1.8 on the A7C for reference.
I'll stick with my mark 4 until they have a faster F stop for mark 6 telephoto version

No easily no. It does not have the built in Interval Shooting Function like the newer cameras. You would need a intervalometer like this one for example: amzn.to/2MWCx1C

I have too many directional microphones to use but it didnt come with one. I'm up in the air on if i should still get one. $1200 wouldn't have been that bad had they simply added a MIC jack.
No this is the 5a, not the 6. An yes, I agree about the mic jack... I don't know if Sony will ever ad one at this point.

That is a great question! New sensor probably, as it's a been a few models now with the same unit. Not really sure what else. I can't see the lens getting faster, but they might add more focal length.. 300mm maybe?

I don't think they will go bigger with the RX100 Series, just a new better sensor perhaps.. I do think there is a market for an APS-C sensor sized point and shoot though, so perhaps Sony will create that!

Why is your camera marked as “RX100 V” and not “RX100 VA” as you are reviewing the updated VA version ?
The VA is the replacement for the V, so Sony just kept it as the V I guess...

I believe I found the answer, sent in by folks at B&H: if you look at the bottom of the camera body, it will have a label with serial number. The V will say DSC-RX100M5 and the VA will say DSC-RX100M5A.

They are both excellent options with the ZV1 being the latest model optimized for vlogging and having no viewfinder.
My friend, that is not a "fully" articulating touch screen, be careful about using that term because when you mention "fully" articulating, that means just that.
I am having issues with this camera and finding it hard to get an answer why from Sony. I cant get any smaller than f11 aperture in any mode or possible combinations. Even after a full itialisation ( twice) it started out ok but decided after re programming the buttons it never moved past f11. I would welcome any possible remedies if this has happened to anyone else.
It doesn't go smaller than f11 but why would you want to go smaller than that with a 1" sensor camera? For the best image quality, you have to use f4-f5.6 and that's pretty much f11-f16 equivalent.
@@tamasvarga67 it should go smaller, it did when I first had it and feedback from others say the same, the fact it doesn't now suggests an error somewhere regardless of the quality when smaller aperture is selected.
Alan Matkin No, it shouldn’t go smaller just do your research. RX100IV, V, VA have the same optics and their aperture range is f1,8/2,8 - f11. You are confusing it with something else...

what's wrong with Sony ? No touch,screen, no decent battery, a good grip and a few more buttons in front of the camera, no mic jack . It could have been the PERFECT compact camera, but no ! I-m still waiting for Canon G5x II in the next months, hope it will not be a dissapointment like LX100 II ...
why do I have to waste so much time just to find out the difference between the RX100V and the RX100VA...?
