  • Sony recently announced the RX100 VI, the newest addition to its compact camera line. With six iterations of the RX100 series now in circulation, how does this new model stand out from the rest? Chris and Jordan take the camera for a spin and tell us what they think about the new, longer lens, the updated viewfinder and more. They even manage to fit in some well earned hammock time in the process.

    This is the first RX100 that I would even consider buying, as the focal range is just too limited on the previous models. However I don't like the lack of a hotshoe, I don't like the lack of a mic input and I don't like the price.

    Here's how I use the RX-100-- the V and soon the VI-- It's phenomenal on a gimbal. Easy set up with its light weight. I use it as a B-camera in interviews. A lock-off wide shot in conjunction with broadcast cameras. The image holds up-- matches nicely to the bi. And the A-camera has the good audio. Great for a quick photo. Much easier than lugging a full sized DSLR, though sometimes I do.
    If I were to design this camera, I would have kept the 24-70mm and ND filter. I would have the external mic jack. I would move the battery door-- mounted to a gimbal or tripod, you have to take the entire rig apart to get to the battery door.
    Why buy the VI? Autofocus upgrade and touch screen. For my B-camera situation, touch to focus is much more desirable and I won't miss the ND in that situation. I will appreciate a little more throw on the zoom. I'm usually closed down beyond f/4 because I want 2 subjects in focus, so the added depth won't bother me.
    But I will keep the V because it's a better gimbal option. I don't need the longer lens on a gimbal, but I do need the ND because I use the gimbal in all different lighting situations, and I'm usually on phase autofocus for gimbal work. It does a nice job. I will also appreciate the shorter focal length on the gimbal for a more cinematic look.
    For straight Vlogging (I don't...) add a Shure shotgun mic with a memory card. Sounds decent and solves the external mic problem.

    I guess most people who are more into photography than videography could still be fine with a Mark III, despite its shorter zoom range and slower AF. And for video, the Mark IV and V are still fine compared to the VI - especially because they've got a built in ND filter and a wider aperture.

    • @urwholefamilydied
      @urwholefamilydied 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      at the same time though... what's the point in having video in such a small camera? I wish they got rid of the video altogether (or very basic video). If I'm doing video on a regular basis, there's SO many cameras around the 1000 dollar range that are way better than this tiny camera. The only people that will use this for video is family or friends just catching some "moments". And that doesn't need to be crazy quality. Or shit, Iphones are better at it at this point. (yes this video is 5 years old now... but even back then, phones were good/fine for capturing "moments" on video). I'd prefer more still photography focus than video on such a tiny camera that will never be a great video camera.

    You're way too kind about the video on this, not because it looks bad, but the 5 minute 4K recording limit and the overheating really kinda make this not very good for even basic video shooting.

    • @Josh-ow4gc
      @Josh-ow4gc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      newfoundmass The overheating and 5min limit is really only an issue if you’re shooting interviews or a performance. For thr vast majority of potential buyers of this camera - where it will be used as a social camera or a vacation camera, the overheating and recording limits are a non-issue. I have mine in South East Asia right now, and have had no problems shooting 4K clips all day long in hot and humid 36C weather.

    • @newfoundmass
      @newfoundmass 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Josh if you're attempting to record your kid's soccer game or something, the 5 minute recording limit and overheating are definitely deal breakers.

    For those with budget, no issue at all. For the conscious one, like me, considering a compact an almost all around camera for travel, would do away with Fujifilm X70/XE-2 with 27mm f/2.8 with the XF 18-55 as back up. Thanks Chris and Jordan as always!

    Was really looking forward to the Mk VI. Sadly the no mic input, nerfed ND filter, drop in aperture particularly make it a no buy for me despite the extra reach and colour improvements.
    Other ergonomic issues and buffer lockout are less problematic but overall too many compromises for the money.

    The overheating at 24 Celsius is a bit of a drawback considering that is not very hot for a good portion of the planet, but with such a small body heat dissipation is next to impossible.

I like that it's so easy to use like you said, but also like you said, it has a ton of stuff witch I have no need for at all. I'm just looking for the sharpest, clearest, best image quality from one of these camera. So it it this or the Canon G1X Mark III? What is going to give me the best picture? Very close in price, but also very different cameras. Thanks for reviews again guys!

    Chris, a question. I will be travelling Europe for 2 weeks this summer and have the RX10 mk1. Is the convenience of this ones small size worth giving up the constant f2.8 and built in ND? 1080p is all I need for video. Thanks

    • @AustrianGeek

      Signifficantly cheaper, even a cashback deal is actually running in many countries, PLUS: Faster aperture and ND filter (the VI isn´t coming with one).

    • @hushedtones7168
      @hushedtones7168 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the mark5 is still the best, if only they gave it a software update to get HLG and the new menus it would be great.
      mark 6 is just a smaller and cheaper RX10 alternative, which is pretty sad
      when you have greater zoom range image quality will always be worst, and then you lose the aperture and you also lose internal ND filter. this new zoom lens seems even more fragile than before

    • @Minntality
      @Minntality 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree, i'll stick with the RX100 V, which is really the perfect sweet spot for this camera. The zoom is nice in concept but i feel that more people are using this for video now so the additional focal length is pointless, especially when compromising on the lens speed.

    Great video! As an RX-100 Mark IV owner, I wish you'd been more vocal about the 4K video overheating limitation - you mentioned it, but it didn't make it into the final conclusions and it is THE primary complaint I have with this camera. It's a huge drawback and may cause buyer's remorse for some people. It's incredibly frustrating for me to be shooting a 4K video and have the heat warning icon come up. Can you think of any other consumer electronics that can only be used in certain modes for a few minutes? 🤬Other than that, great video - keep up the good work!
    Oh, and as a former Calgarian who shopped at The Camera Store, it's really nice to see this partnership you have with DPReview. 👍😁

      Isn't the RxO basically like a phone camera (sensor size/ quality)? How did that even hit anyone's radar as anything but a specialist camera for multiple camera set ups I have no idea... It seems limited or expensive outside of special uses... Not meant for use as a stand-alone camera even.

    • @roryonabike5863
      @roryonabike5863 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the same sensor as in the RX100 series. If you want to know what the camera can do, check out Sony's Alpha Universe RX0 playlist. Unlike the RX100VI, it has a mike jack and can be used, with an adapter, with standard ND filters.

    I have the RX100V as a secondary camera and i think the VI is not a good release for these reasons:
    - Prices should not exceed 1000$.
    - 22-120mm with faster aperture would have been better choice.
    - Removing the ND-filter was stupid.
    - Should support UHS-II
    - Some improvements to the battery life, it's terrible.
    - Microphone input and USB-C should've been added.

      Lars Isaksen, these features won't necessarily be more expensive by next year. Also, 1200 usd or even 1000 usd is pretty costly and should have enough built in margin for additional innovations.

      Well if you are ready to pay 3000$ for all that than yes. Otherwise, you don't appreciate the powerhouse it is already. There are limits to technology and production cost. You can't have it all. And while you list is something I support like many, its not reasonable to ask for all that and same or less money.

  • @JonInLondon

    I really like my RX100V as the camera to take when you don't want to lug a camera around, especially for the nice 4k video, but the omission of the ND is a real pain in the VI (also the price). There are after-market ND solutions like LensMate but it's a pain. I have a couple of questions, if you have a sec:
    (1) How's the video stabilisation, as on my V (m5 in Sony-speak) I find it's poor in 4k (and while I did buy a Crane-M gimbal you lose a little on compactness... although it's probably the biggest camera I'd want to use on a gimbal for extended periods).
    (2) I assume the HFR video saving hasn't improved and it saves in "real time", so a 4.3 sec clip shot at 10x slow-mo takes 43 seconds to write to card?
    (3) I also use Cine2 for video (PP6) but changed the colour mode to ITU709 (I thought it was just me, but I've seen others who have done it too), and have seen Still recommended to go with Cine2 as well. Any thoughts?
    Oh and really interesting comments about the lens, the RX100V lens is really good at f4.5 and f5.6 but less so as you move away from them.

    What happened with the framing at 13:26? :D Other than that a nice review. Still jealous about the MyMenu with not being backported on my a6000 and a7ii...
    By the way, I still find those short cuts to the dpreview website for comparison hard to follow - the eye starts figuring out what is shown, which crop is for which camera etc and then before looking at the actual crops, the video cuts back to you. I rather like the plain side-by-side comparisons as you did for the colors compared to Panasonic. A website with all its options and toggles simply doesnt work for short cuts like you do even though I get the point of that - to promote the website.

    • @copperx
      @copperx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least it would be great to get the direct links to the shown comparisons in the video description, so that one could have an easy look and taking the time and pausing the video - which is also not the best option.

    The best camera is the one you have with you.
    There are so many missed photos/videos because a large camera distracts the subject(s).
    This camera fits in my pocket and can shoot very quickly and in LOW light.
    I do wish it was less expensive.
    NOTE- These are very expensive to repair. Do get/use a leash or mini tripod stick.
    These are small and slippery cameras.
    I now have three versions and II, Iv and V. I don't hink he VI is worth the upgrade, but well worth it if coming in cold.
    The older versions are available and SUPPORTED.
    Buy an older version if a budget concern.

    Good morning! I own Sony RX100 since it first came out till now & debating to upgrade it to RX100M6 because of 2 important features (to me) are: 1) I can't find "self-portrait- one person" function on the old camera helps me a lot when taking family photos with little kids & cats that don't sit still. All I have to do is set the camera on a tripod & select that function then let it take non-stop photos. Then select the ones I like. The new camera Sony RX100M6 only has "Self-timers (cont.): 2 seconds/5 images. 2) As I don't know anything about camera, the function with "?" question mark on the Sony RX100 help me a lot. I just press it & it will tell me the setting I'm on will do what... I would appreciate if you could help me to figure it out how to use the new camera to complete the 2 mentioned concerns. Thank you in advance!

    For half the price it would be fine. I also don't get why every Sony model needs to get more expensive. A6000, 6300, 6500, RX100, II, III, IV, V, VI... stop it.

    • @GreatOne0815
      @GreatOne0815 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Normally technology gets better and also cheaper, so that you have the same price with more features. That the cameras (especially Sony) getting more expensive with each model, doesn't make sense.

    • @davewyman
      @davewyman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Kehm If Sony could sell massive numbers of the VI, the price could come down. That's not going to happen. Do the prices of new, upper end models of Subarus, Fiats, Fords, with new features, etc., stay the same or come down? No, they rise, and for the same reason. How about high end bicycles? New releases cost more with each new release.
      The A6000 is still available and so is the RX100 V, so it's not like you're forced to buy the latest and greatest VI.

    • @GreatOne0815
      @GreatOne0815 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But normally you also get new entry level models with newer technology. The A6000 will always stay the same. And that's stupid. If the A6300 and A6500 are not replacements for the A6000, then they should at least make a NEW A6000.
      Just like Nikon or Canon does with Nikon D3000, D3100, D3300 or D5000, D5100 or Canon Rebel T2i, T3i. And not let the old be in the market for the same price it costs 4 years ago.

    Sony still sells the old versions. Personaly I'm hoping they make something to replaced the cancelled DL1850. That zoom range with an external mic option would be a vlogger's dream, and also make for a good landscape/architecture focused travel camera.

    Without the ND filter, are we forced to shoot in F8/11 for smoother footage?

    • @jambononi
      @jambononi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucky Never the lack of ND is more about exposure than how smooth the footage is. Unless you mean the depth of field? If by smooth you mean the frames per second then you would actually raise the shutter speed meaning your lowering the exposure, so you're less likely to need nd. But yes you're probably going to be shooting in f8 at least during the day.

    • @idontwanttotalkabout
      @idontwanttotalkabout 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Travis actually, you want a slower shutter. Unless you want to add frame blur in post.

    • @jambononi
      @jambononi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      idontwanttotalkabout no you would want faster shutter for faster frame rates, that then get slowed down later. Otherwise when they are slowed down, each frame will blur even more than 24fps. Typically you double the shutter according to the frame rate. 24fps = 1/50, 120fps = 1/320

    • @jambononi
      @jambononi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      idontwanttotalkabout although I've probably misunderstood what you've said so sorry about that 🙂 it all depends on what he means by smooth...

    • @idontwanttotalkabout
      @idontwanttotalkabout 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Travis I'm guessing he means non stuttering appearance which is what you get if you have to shoot at 1/2000 in bright sunlight which a nd filter really helps with.

    The extra contacts needed for UHS-2 interfere with the memory stick ones. Unless Sony decides to ditch MS for good, you'll never see a UHS-2 singe slot camera, or dualslot dual UHS-2 body.

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ferongr: Good point. But Sony should make the switch. After all, Sony makes SD cards as well. (They can still sell Memory Sticks for older models that only use them, but probably only four per day are sold around the world anyway.)

    For what it's worth -- The RX cameras ARE destructible and delicate. I have had almost all versions. I took the mark IV and mark V on some motorcycle adventure travel around the world and both were trashed way too easy. Blown dollars. So if you baby the camera, go for it. If you think that you can take it on anything that does not take attention for safety -- dont bother, it will cost you tons and ultimately, I decided its not worth it on my next trip to Nepal. No replacement for the mark V. I'll wait until they harden or weatherproof the unit for that money.
