Afaik the App drawer changes were toned back a bit, but the verticality stayed. Actually, HTC had switched to vertical drawer in its Sense 5 & 6 already and I think it's actually better once you get used to it, it's basically the same but scrolling through it is faster

Maybe it's a bit more functional, which is great. But I find the spacing a lot less aesthetically pleasing which is actually a big part of overall satisfaction using stock android.
Crazy how volume control and fingerprint reading was "advanced", I'm here 3 years later running Android 9.0 Pie on my One Plus 6 !

I've been using the vertical app drawer for a while now on cynogen and think it is far better than the horizontal one mainly because i can directly go to the app group just by pressing the alphabet at the bottom of the screen and it looks a lot neater, don't see this specific feature on the developer version of M hopefully on the final build. I know HTC has it since ever but this one is far better and neat.

Honestly, if they are going for a vertical app drawer, they should look at the one on cm 12.1. Much more vertical space and slide bar between letters.

When will Google give us more than 15 volume steps? Xposed is still wonky on Lollipop and I'm tired of either having to listen just under the volume I want, or blow out my eardrums.

***** Using OPO too. Temasek ROM, Carbon ROM, Blisspop, CRDroid, Euphoria OS, these ROMs in XDA will give you a range from 30 - 60 volume steps. I'm personally using 45. Euphoria OS will however give you 30, but that should suffice too.
***** no mention of monthly OTA updates for the M preview? Kind of a big deal (convenient), IMHO.
The ota update scheme is a fantastic addition and why it made downloading the preview all the more worth the `hassle'
I like the app drawer on the first preview best.
Now on tap looks amazing, and like something I'd actually use a LOT. Done right (which it already looks like it is), it has the potential to really increase efficiency and speed of smartphone use, and make everything feel even more unified. It uses Lollipop's card aesthetics very well too. Now I'm just hoping that the changes are minor enough that the Xposed framework can be adapted easily...

I dont agree with what he said about the new App drawer.
I have a note 4 and i use the nova launcher with a vertical sliding app drawer. Its easier to reach the apps by sliding it down rather than going all the way to the top of the display.

Top 5 I also find vertical app drawers smoother than multi-page app drawers. When you have 100+ apps, it takes forever to scroll through pages (assuming you aren't going to search by name). Keeping them on a single page makes it faster to scroll through them.

Top 5 I semi agree. I like vertical scrolling more, but the way google did it is ugly. They should do it like nova launcher (list form instead of group form.)
Top 5 Exactly. Vertical app drawers mean users can scroll the app they demand to the middle of the display, in other words that makes the app icons (except for the ones at the very top and bottom) much more reachable and finger friendly than horizontal cards which have fixed grids.

Why in the hell would we need letters on the side of our apps. I think everyone understands what alphabetical order is without the letters needed. That feature will really bug me.

Tapping a letter supports being lazy by taking you straight to the apps that begin with it. Just a shortcut no one probably uses much.
