I think Huawei should us Calxy OS instead of Harmony OS as it will be almost similar as Android and they also use the privacy feature in advertising to encourage more people buying their phones. This may regain them their old or new customers who are looking more a privacy phone and who had bought a Huawei phone in past in just a couple of years.
Huawei is run by the Chinese Communist Party, any advertised “privacy feature” is a trick. I can guarantee that a Huawei phone has much more telemetry being sent than any other Google or Apple phone.

I wouldn't be surprised if Google did something shady to try to get rid of calyx OS. in the past I've Loved Google, I even use one of their pixel phones but recently their company has become significantly less customer centric. Google wasn't a very customer-centric company to begin with but now they're starting to favor advertisers over customers and creators so much that it's bothering me a lot. I'm just saying Google is a very very big company and they have nothing to gain and everything to lose from calyx becoming more popular. I'm probably going to end up switching out my phone soon for something else but given the big bugs that have recently been found in OnePlus I'm not sure what I should switch to.
@Gottes God My current plan was to just take a cheap xiaomi phone, strip it bare and install something like calyx or arrow. I'll look into OnePlus too when the time comes.
I've been using things like this for a while now, microG is usually a must have in custom ROMs, yes all that built in stuff in the ROM showed in the video are cool as heck, but you usually can do all that manually just by installing a custom ROM, magisk (root) and some rooted apps on any phone.
@@krazymeanie That's bullshit. They are in no way more mainstream or easier to install than lineageOS. There's no effort, there's just expensive membership options. It's like the freedom phone, without the phone.
not just this, many open source custom roms come without google apps, and lets you choose whether you want to install them or not. but this is the only one that builds more features and gives alternatives out of the box I guess. good stuff
@@ampleman602 You can degoogle any phone including a Google pixel by rooting and applying any AOSP (vanilla) rom almost every phone have some of them .
The biggest flaw for Calyx OS is that, even though you can download purchased apps that require you to pay before downloading, you can't access features paid for in in-app purchases. Considering almost no one who makes an app that matters (for profit) doesn't use in-app purchases, this can really hamper your workflow when you need to use that one app you can't replace with open source alternatives.
@@tronghieudoan97 TBH... I don't like LOS... I have used Pixel Experience, AOSP, Havoc and LOS, and tbh, LOS just felt kinda empty... No distinctive features compared to Havoc, not as fast as AOSP, not as private as /e/, not as feature packed as Pixel Experience... Just kinda mediocre
@@chillmusic7977 And yet the best. /E/ is basically lineage os with some extra stuffs. Majority of the roms are based of los or take stuffs from los. True that los doesn't have distinctive features but that is because anything they do is picked up immediately by everyone else and modified to fit their needs
I'd be curious to know what is involved in porting this over to other devices the way LineageOS does; given some of the recent moves by Apple, etc. I can see this becoming more and more popular an option particularly for those working in commercially sensitive fields, having privacy concerns for their own personal wellbeing, etc.
Theoretically I would assume you could, but it would be worse than the Pixel versions most likely, due to a) not having the backing of a dedicated entity to provide confidence in longevity and b) pretty much every other modern phone requiring the boot loader to be unlocked before installing another OS, which the Pixels do not. Ironically, Google phones are the easiest phones to de-Google
@@skywz That's quite interesting (and ironic) that the Pixel is the only one that this can be done on easily; it sounds intensely counter-intuitive, I wonder why Google did this? Could they have some other kind of hardware based identification that permits tracking in their products? Or is this tin foil hat of mine a tad too tight?
@@davocc2405 I have no answers. I’m not even certain that this is true; I heard on a tech video on another channel that Google did this, but I’m not sure if it’s true that Pixels are the only major phones that do this, and I’m not sure that Calyx OS will only be ported to phones that can do this. I do think that if there were hardware tracking in the Pixels, it would have been discovered by now.
You need the drivers for that devices combination of hardware, installed into OS, Almost all the mobile processors are based on ARM and its standards so the software should work (probably they have interoperative layers before the software execution level for that) and a software package that runs all the hardware like one that handles NFC, the cellular radio and dialing, camera, sensors, etc. then package it up as a ROM to be installed on the device. Knowing how to and how to do it on Android's Linux base... that is where the work comes in and why not every joe and jane average is doing it.
Personally I'd rather use LineageOS with MicroG incorporated. Play services is replaced with MicroG and no Google apps come pre-installed. F-Droid is also installed for you, where you can download Aurora Store and other free open source software. It's what I'm running on my Razer Phone 2.
Very informative video. Although I don't think it's smart to conclude that since it's open source "there are no hidden trackers or spyware". Open source is great, but somebody qualified needs to spend the time auditing the source code to make sure it's clean. (I'm not suggesting anything about Calyx OS. Just a general comment.)
I was about to say the same thing. Plenty of open source code has been shown to contain malware. Assuming that code is safe because it's open source is a terrible mindset to have. If you or a trusted 3rd party hasn't audited the code and deemed it to be safe, treat it the same way you'd treat a closed source application.
@@OkarinHououinKyouma most people don't understand code lol. it's very easy then to say "hey, you can look at all the code yourself, so you can trust us" while betting that almost nobody is going to closely examine and understand the code
Sadly, I don't have a Google Pixel, so i can't try Calyx right now, but I've been using a Samsung Galaxy SIII Neo as my main mobile phone for quite a while now, and Lineage OS runs pretty good on it. I decided to not use Play Services or even MicroG on it because of performance reasons, and to be honest, this is the best experience I've ever had on a mobile phone. I had to get used to having no Google Maps app and RCS Messaging (and of course only EDGE Connection, but that's alright). But now, I just love it.
I've used 5 Xoaomi devices and they all work very well. Didn't realize that Google will give up our info, without probable cause... that kinda pisses me off

in the past I've Loved Google, I even use one of their pixel phones but recently their company has become significantly less customer centric.
Xiaomi phone with Lineage OS and you'd be golden. It's not hard to flash the custom rom.
I've been using things like this for a while now, microG is usually a must have in custom ROMs, yes all that built in stuff in the ROM showed in the video are cool as heck, but you usually can do all that manually just by installing a custom ROM, magisk (root) and some rooted apps on any phone.

not just this, many open source custom roms come without google apps, and lets you choose whether you want to install them or not. but this is the only one that builds more features and gives alternatives out of the box I guess. good stuff
But only works for mi A2 and Google pixels which nobody cares about and buys.

@@debsattam1 but doesn't rooting have some danger too. I forgot but someone said that rooting your phone can be dangerous. Can.

I use Blokada (from F-Droid).
