I'd also like to add that in the case of the Apple pencil, Apple's UITouch API only shares a small subset of the iPad's data touch points, forcing third-party developers to create complex and processor-intensive algorithms to guesstimate their pen's touch location, draw trajectory, and palm rejection. Apple, on the other hand, has access to ALL of the iPad's data touch points, ensuring that their apple pencil will always outperform the competitors. It's important to note that Apple doesn't allow any other stylus to have tilt detection, so real high-end competition is not possible. I think that should raise their anticompetitiveness score.
I’m curious about this. I thought that it was pressure sensitivity that isn’t found in other styluses, but then I remembered that in 2021 my partner bought an Adonis stylus (which works with their iPad Air); it has the main 3 features: tilt, pressure, and palm rejection… so I don’t understand your comment… could you (or someone) explain this?
This is also why I don't mess with Apple. Market deletion is just a cold way to go and only helps with consolidation of money/power to a few, slowing "innovation" and killing creativity
This cannibalization is also happening with small businesses selling on Amazon....Amazon sees what’s selling, makes their own copycat product and then gives itself the best listing visibility among its competitors.

As a biologist, the shark and remora is one of the best tech analogies I have ever heard! I know the reviews get the views, but MKBHD’s most brilliant videos are when he explains the business and strategy behind the tech.
The flashlight one kills me. Having worked as a tech for years now, it pains me the amount of people using sketchy flashlight apps not realizing it's built into their phone.
There actually are rare scenarios where a flashlight app is better. Can't remember the details, but about a year ago I put one on a phone I was using because it made whatever task I was trying to accomplish easier. Maybe something to do with the gloves I was wearing not be able to register swipes easily to access the built-in button, but hard presses on the app worked fine? Whatever the problem was, the app was a God-send in that specific scenario, but was then never used again.
Re: Watson and Sherlock- in the developer community, when Apple builds the core functionality of your software into one of theirs (like making a first party version of your third party thing) we call it “getting Sherlocked”
Yeah that’s an interesting point, nor does the remora get to choose to be the only remora on the shark. Just because 1 remora got on first doesn’t mean it owns that spot.
A shark isn't the only way the remora gets to eat either. Meaning they aren't dependant on Apple. At the same time, Marques mentions tile could join find my, lose its app, or tile can keep it, and lose businesses. Isn't entirely true as long as android exist. Which is why the remora would live without eating off the shark they play nice with others. Apples Air Tag only works with Iphones. Don't get me wrong Apple is great and Being The Shark is cool but the Shark doesn't eat everything for a reason so their is a balance.
I hope apple realises and doesn’t send any review units in the future 😅perhaps we should start an antitrust on all these famous TH-cam channels.. they have a lot of power to influence..
Strong network effect from even before Apple got there, on the back of Spotify's top-notch recommendation algos (that's their IP). Plus they had their shit together in terms of managing relations with content creators and iPhone devices so there wasn't much of a reason to switch out unless you really liked Apple Music. The integration effect he's describing didn't apply as much there.
@@adityavarshney6690 Spot on points, no pun intended. I also think Spotify has been implementing user-friendly device-agnostic features that Apple would have implemented, like handing off between devices on any OS with not just the song but the volume and items in the queue, etc. Spotify seems to keep up with Apple's pace of innovation (and surpass it at times) much more than the products Marques discussed in the video.
Agree with the others: so far, at least, Spotify is doing ok because it's as good or better if a product. Apple arguably is using unfair practices on the subscription billing side with Spotify, but I think the network effects are not unfair or unreasonable.
I'm not a Apple user and never will be but I remember with my first Android "smartphone" which was the Sony Ericsson Xperia mini (the second mini they made, not the first with the 3 physical buttons in the front) and I remember coming from a non "smartphone" which was the Sony Ericsson K750i (yeah awesome phone) that they were tons of basic things missing like THE flashlight app to simply add a button to activate your flash. It felt so dumb to me at the time, for a smartphone to need a app for literally everything (including you sneezing). File management, guess what, you need a app. You want your time in your home screen to be displayed as 24h, another app which is a widget which you need to search and find the best for you without any full screen ads popping up (yeah remember those?) for such a simple thing to do for a phone that is called SMART. No notes app either, basic things like the percentage calculation missing in the calculator which guess what, I had all this in the K750i before getting into the world of "smartphones". And if this seems like a interesting topic to you and a paradox and liking my long comment so far (yeah I'm a writer a write a lot blah blah) then I encourage you to just Google how old the Sony Ericsson K750i is now, and how old already was then compared to the Xperia mini cause yes I got into the smartphone world late compared to others due to financial issues which is really sad cause I like tech and I know how and want to use it. But it is what it is. And I also remember that until I understood how the Android OS worked I really felt like my K750i was a computer much more capable of executing basic stuff than this so called smartphone at that time. Now we got all these "features" baked in either it's Android or iOS. It makes you think, didn't they already know what phones had and should have before making the newer and supposedly better ones? Cause at the end of the day they are tools that we use the make our life better and easier and why not, more fun! Not the opposite! My bloody K750i had a flash with its 2 MP camera which you could use also as a flash with the press of 2 buttons while the first iPhone didn't even had a bloody FLASH! Only to add it later as a "innovation" which you needed a third party app to use as a flash to later bake in to the software itself? You call that smart? Think about that for a minute.
This, and your Right to Repair video, leave me with a sense of disquieting inevitability. I can't imagine a way to stop it. The more complex an ecosystem, or device, the more encompassing and invulnerable it becomes.

Sadly there is nothing we can do. No other company offers what Apple offers. It's convenient and it saves time. I wish congress would Apple Pay for what they done. But is it any better if the US Government starts telling private companies what to do? Who do we give the power to? When iBooks came out they tried forcing Scholastic to publish their books on iBooks and that way apple would keep a portion of the sales. Scholastic refused and they were banned from the app store. Recently there was Apple vs. EpicGames (Fortnite), EpicGames managed to developed a way to introduce direct payments on their games and apple removed Fortnite from the App Store since they were not gonna profit from sales anymore. Apple banned Xbox Game Pass app, the app was supposed to allowed users download and play xbox games on their phones, but apple had Apple Arcade on the way so the app was rejected. You can stream games on your phone but is not the same. Apple keeps doing this time and time again.
No worries, eventually your decision making will be replaced so the uncomfortable self-questioning will cease too. j/k.. i love the ecosytem too... I view it partially as a lot of these apps were given time to make profit in an area that someone else provided the platform... and a lot of them reach an evolutionary dead end where they just earn passive income without being developed anymore. At that point its probably better overall and more efficient to prune them and bake in that kind of functionality. Otherwise it may just become someone's free ride and encourage stagnation.

We have an unprecedented amount of conglomerates having monopoly on certain market segments and I wonder what would that mean in a few decades for the fair competition and the customers. It's scary how massive and influential Amazon is becoming.
Yeah pretty much every big company does this. If they don't straight up steal features to kill the competition, they just buy out the competition. And before you know it, these corporations grow tremendously and practically become their own governments. Its no wonder so many companies try to patent stuff - if they don't, conglomerate A will just steal it and sell it to a much larger market.

It seems like building a business just around a feature for apple products is a dangerous territory.

I'm very much a pro-regulation person when it makes sense, but in cases where network effects (such as with the iPhone, or Facebook), I'm really not sure what should/could be done to promote competition, even just hypothetically speaking. In a traditional monopoly, a vertically integrated monopoly controls prices in a way that hurts the consumer, but in the case of robust networks, consumers mostly benefit from the robustness, but the network owner can do malicious things like, say, ban talk that criticizes the dominant political party. Jaron Lanier's proposed solution to the network problem is collective ownership since the network participants are the ones making the network valuable, but that wouldn't help in this case where the best use (i.e. the most useful use) of the network happens to kill off a legitimate business. Maybe collective ownership of the network would allow for more open APIs so that Apple couldn't keep the network closed to third parties and then open it all of a sudden and wipe out entire third party ecosystems in doing so. Idk!
@@drewlop I don't think that the government can do much in this case anyways, its up to the people to make the right decisions, and most people go for the easy route. Tesla has some of the best electric tech right now, and people buy their cars, and their cars only, its hard to see a future for other companies in that space, but we can't push Tesla's progress back. It's important to note that Apple doesn't allow any other stylus to have tilt detection, so real high-end competition is not possible. I think that should raise their anticompetitiveness score.
Apple Pencil Hover does it with the iPad Pro (2022) (M2 Chip).

You roped in sharks, business ethics, economics, technology, and an advertisement into one segment and made them flow together seamlessly. Skillfully done and I would have enjoyed reading it if you put all of this information into an article. Next level writing on this one.
You could go higher level and talk about homelessness as a “choice”. You can conform to what your boss or Wall Street wants, or you could be outcast and be homeless or put in jail. The “choice” is yours

I think this video is planned opposition aka false flag. Apple has legion of hardcore fans, so this won’t affect most Apple users. However, this video may pique non-Apple users’ (like myself. I’ve only owned 1 Apple device in my life) interest .

Maybe those users are just trying to support smaller programming businesses.
@@ThatIsDopeBro that gave me a good laugh
There actually are rare scenarios where a flashlight app is better. Can't remember the details, but about a year ago I put one on a phone I was using because it made whatever task I was trying to accomplish easier. Maybe something to do with the gloves I was wearing not be able to register swipes easily to access the built-in button, but hard presses on the app worked fine? Whatever the problem was, the app was a God-send in that specific scenario, but was then never used again.

I use a flashlight app on Android because it has a nice widget the lets me turn on the flashlight from the home page without looking like an eyesore.

The other aspect of the shark/remora analogy is the remora never gets to choose which direction the symbiotic duo swims
Yeah that’s an interesting point, nor does the remora get to choose to be the only remora on the shark. Just because 1 remora got on first doesn’t mean it owns that spot.
To be blunt,
If a shark doesn't find anything to eat, it can munch on a remora for a quick snack.
His storytelling and depth explanation without hurting your head is so great.

Would love a video about how Spotify came out of this, especially since it has survived and thrived since the release of Apple Music.

I used to have flashlight app before Apple added it to iPhone
@@joshoowa its not built in to your iphone tho
Same here. Oof I forgot about that
I remember downloading an app to change the color of your notification lights.
That's what unfettered capitalism will do. Companies exist only for profit, not to help humanity - any "good" a company does is merely a side effect.

Here is what I’d say …
The analogy is, someone farms in, ON my front yard, grows and sells tomato’s, while I let them. I even let them use my water, and set up a veggie stall on my street frontage.
HOW it is unjust if I then start growing and selling tomato’s, charge them for water from my tap, and build a better commissary store to improve customer experience ON MY PROPERTY.
Agree with the premise (apple can trample ecosystem), but not the conclusion(that there is any injustice to it). Any company can and should foresee the opportunity window, make hay while they can, and be happy for the opportunity while it lasts.
I appreciate the charging Magic Mouse and giant AirPod in the background there.

I gotta be honest.. I always loved the ecosystem of apples devices, as it really makes things more easy and intuitive. But now that I watched this video, I am questioning my past decision making.
Apple keeps doing this time and time again.
same here lol
not realizing i was participating in this “apple ecosystem”
You are the kind of user that Apple is building devices for.

Marques: Nebula, a video streaming service built by creators- including myself.
Apple: Well, well, well. What do we have here?
Dude this video highlights EVERYTHING insidious about this strategy and I love it.
It’s a little bit like the “Amazon’s Choice” feature on Amazon, it’s a bit easier for the customer but it makes a huge difference for the companies, especially if Amazon themselves are making that product under the Amazon Basic’s name.
Yeah but Apple made a lot of those features better and they are also included free of charge. Like Duet display is terrible. Also like he mentioned the flashlight feature. Apps would charge you or would place a ton of ads.
The main USP in Apple's Favor is unexpectedly the "Price" .....
@@alr1577 yeah it's not like Amazon's Choice at all, not even close.
absolutely in love with tile ecosystem vs airtag ecosystem animation at 4:30
This actually reminds me of the movie saw when he asks you to “make your choice” but you’re just going to die in the end
Yup. Exactly.
Or else just sell yourself to the parent company. Literally every huge tech company does this.
Samsung , Google , Facebook , microsoft and Especially apple.
It's true the Apple gets highlighted more... But If you'd have to make a similar list for Google . Uffff , the pages it would fill.
Oof, good comparison.
Watching this for a second time a year or so later. I forget when I first saw it. But there’s even more clarity. I enjoyed this.
And thats the reason why MKBHD rules! That’s him explaining the economics of tech thereby making him not just another tech reviewer. Btw, amazon also does this in a slightly similar way by launching a cheaper “amazon” product when that other 3rd party product become popular.
I agree - on both points - :p, Although I would argue that amazon is quite a bit ahead of the whole taking over markets trick, they have it pretty much automated
Yup and Amazon based it’s whole business and supply chain model on the way Walmart does things and 10x’d it
So, in a way, he is doing what he says that Apple is doing.. "getting into" other TH-camrs business because his channel is stronger and bigger, right? That's just capitalism...not tech economics or wtv... this "theory" isn't new or uncommon... so explaining this with a focus on Apple instead of all the other big businesses: Google, Amazon, FB, Walmart, Blackrock, Marlboro, McDonald's, Nestle, etc etc IS what's kind of unorthodox.
@@Mrst3lios89 If MKBHD gets viewers base on quality content alone, I don't see how he's a Shark in the TH-cam tech community. Other TH-camrs look up to him as one of the trend setters. He has been on the grind/growth for nearly 10 years.
“You could either swim off into the ocean, or you could stay swimming with me, the shark 🦈 “

I do not agree with his argument. It like saying big tech should be staying out of the lane of any emerging market. Amazon buying wholefood to give a slap on relevant industry, they also use their prime members to take market shares of streaming media content. And Google using their Gmail users to capitalise on the Cloud market. It's just business. Mircosoft, Facebook, Samsung, Huawei and others are doing the exact same thing.
@@desaturated6049 I don't think he makes the argument that Apple is the only company doing it. It's just soo apparent with Apple. It's an interesting discussion whether it's morally justifiable to let these tech giants become so impactful that they can shape entire industries :))
@@phleeg Yes, I agree with those early replies also but one topic at a time. Apple the shark is eating the very thing that making them grow. How much Quote new tech have they created solo on their own, not much recently that I'm aware.

Alternative title: The illusions of the free market and its effects on competition. :D
Idk!
True lmaoo
@@drewlop I don't think that the government can do much in this case anyways, its up to the people to make the right decisions, and most people go for the easy route. By using integrated services, people don't give the competition a chance. I see this problem in not only the tech industry but also in the auto industry. Tesla has some of the best electric tech right now, and people buy their cars, and their cars only, its hard to see a future for other companies in that space, but we can't push Tesla's progress back. Its really just up to the people to make the right decisions. I try and diversify the brands I use, it probably doesn't make a difference, but I feel happy because I think I'm making a difference by not letting 1 or 2 companies monopolize my lifestyle.
@@aiv4873 is it the right choice though? If a company, say Apple, makes a set of compelling products which meet a consumer need, is it really the wrong choice to purchase that product?
If I need to buy petrol, and there’s a petrol station on my commute, is it the wrong choice to go there to get petrol rather than diversify my petrol buying habits and go out of my way to somewhere else?
@@SimonLYW It's not wrong, what's wrong is taking other ideas and forcing others to meet your demands. I think what apple and Google do is wrong that's why I do what I do. But if there's a difference between a gas station and a tech product. Taking the idea of a developer and and adding it to your system rendering the developer useless.
I think you forgot about how Apple banned a lot of parental control apps from the App Store, just before announcing their own built-in Screen Time app, which essentially replaced those third-party alternatives.
They launched it but I don’t think there’s any evidence of Apple banning anything beforehand

@@scottbaker8528 there's a ton of coverage of it.
