      I recall being given old rags by my mother and we kids were given the job of polishing the waxed wooden floors. We had a great time skidding about!
      How are the floors holding up? I am curious how do you clean them I have steam mop would this be out of the question to use it?? Thanks!

      @@time-out-tuti-fruti5142 they are holding up great! im not sure about the steam mop. i will use a barely damp microfiber mop on my floors after sweeping them. it doesn't hurt them but i don't want to soak them with water so im careful to be sparing with the water!

    This was the exact solution that I was hoping to find. After sanding a maufactured oak floor in my Winnebago i applied a coat polyurethane 50% thinner bit i did not like the finish plus it took over three days to not really dry. So i wiped it down with thinner and lightly sanded it leaving a thin coat of polyurethane. Then I applied a pledge restore coat and then I applied watco teak oil.
    Ii looked great but I wanted to make the surface more durable.
    Your video was a perfect solultion. I will get Johnson floor wax ASSP.

      How did you go? I have tasmanian oak. I have sanded it. Initially was thinking to apply epoxy. Then when I was doing testing on pine wooden planks I accidentally did a wrong proportions and did not like epoxy got rubbery. It was cheaping. I decided to do polyurethane and then my another correct mix of epoxy dried and it look ok. Pretty hard and durable. Cheaper option that polyurethane. Epoxy seems could be better as less VOCs compare to oil based polyurethane. I asked someone and old woodworked advised against using epoxy or polyurethane and advised use vax. So I'm not sure what is better. What I like about epoxy it is chemical resistance and durable. What I do not like is recoating to make it self level reques a lot of epoxy. I also thinking may be apply epoxy and then on top of it one coat of polyurethane. Once polyurethane scratched apply additional coat. ChatGPT says epoxy is more durable then polyurethane. Beeswax on another hand is the most ecological. But buffing seems involved and wax is not chemical resistant and at the same time I do not have access to lots of bees wax. After watching vids of that lady wax goes out of equation as low chem resistance and poor resistance to water. So I still think what to do which one of the next 3: epoxy, epoxy + polyurethane finish or just few layers of polyurethane.

    Your floors are gorgeous! I grew up in a old cape cod style home with hardwoods. The wood wasn’t varnished. I really dislike that high gloss look and the varnish gets scratched and ugly. My siblings and I had old bathroom rugs that we pulled each other around on to buff the floors after my mother waxed. It’s a great and fun memory!
    I stained concrete floors in my guest house with an $8 bag of copperas (iron sulfate) instead of using the heavy duty, expensive chemical stain that I used in another home. The copperas resulted in a beautiful warm brown color. I wonder what the finish refresher product that you used on your wood floors would do to my concrete floors. It’s time to wax again.

    I’ve refinished many hardwood floors. You should have sanded the floor prior to waxing. You have a ton of depression, paint and what looks like old polyurethane. You cannot wax over polyurethane. I’m not an expert by any means. I learned by trial and error. I’m not n the middle of restoring my 100 year old hardwood floors. I have an Oreck i used 60 grit sanding screen to take off the shine. Then a 80 grit sandpaper to remove any debris. Cleaned the floor and removed the debris. Used sc johnson to wax, used my oreck buffing cover, it came out amazing. Beautiful shine. Good luck on your project.

    • @OldWorldFarmHouse
      @OldWorldFarmHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Renee, your floors must be gorgeous. Someday I hope to do a more in depth job on my floors. Thanks for the tips! Sounds like you're really happy with the Oreck. I'm going to look into that one.
      This video was only about adding a layer of wax. It's protected and shined the floor in the interim and is a big improvement for this floor, which has a lot of wear as you point out. It's not polyurethaned. Perhaps it looks like that in the video for some reason, but it's just wax.
      You are so right, you cannot wax over poly. In case anyone is wondering if your floor is waxed, drip a couple drips of water on it and wait a few minutes to see if they turn cloudy white. That would indicate wax.
      I'm certainly no expert on floors.
      I wanted to share my experience in case anyone else finds themself in a similar situation - not able to sand/strip just at the moment, but wanting to do a little something to protect/improve the look of their floors. Thanks for your comment.

      Why you can’t wax over Polyurethane? I have that floor and I’m about to wax it to cover some scratches and peelings from my dog and give it the luster shine.

    • @OldWorldFarmHouse
      @OldWorldFarmHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi M P, its not recommended over poly, but apparently it’s done at times! I found this article about it. woodworkingclarity.com/can-you-wax-over-polyurethane/#:~:text=No%2C%20you%20shouldn't%20apply,off%20before%20sand%20and%20refinish.

    You're working too hard. Vacuum the floor, then mop the floor with a vinegar and water solution. Allow it to completely dry. Then buff it out using FEED-N-WAX. Buff it on with generously. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes then buff it out with a clean microfiber pad or fluffy pad to a high shine.

    If I were you, I would order Lundsmark liquid paste wax approximately 12 dollars for a big container and now that you have a good coat, I would use that next time. Since it is liquid it can be applied a lot faster. Then I would borrow or get an upright floor machine. I have a Boss Gloss unit very good for a large home it will scrub all your floor in addition to buffing. Worth the investment. The floor is beautiful and if a glosser finish is desired a second coat will give you that.

      I should say - on the floor featured in this video, it started to take up the wax, which was not my aim, at this time! On a different (also waxed) floor in my house, lightly going over the floor with it took up some of the grime without dissolving the wax. So be sure to test a small area first.
