    2023 and still the underrated best video for deciding on flooring finish.

  • @ejjacksoncach
    @ejjacksoncach 5 ปีที่แล้ว +692

    My God... this is the single most useful piece of information on the internet for choosing a flooring finish; you need more views!!! I have spent hours already trying to compare reviews and endorsements to make a choice. Going with the PolyWhey 3500 for VOCs and performance in your test. The effort you put into this video is greatly appreciated!

    • @sethmilll

      Eric Jackson thanks, I’m glad this vid was helpful for your finish choice, I know I’m using Polywhey more often now.

      No this is stupid. Doesn't Matter if they dry in ten minutes, they still need a month of curing time or minimum of 2 weeks for waterbase.

    • @captivationcraftllc7331
      @captivationcraftllc7331 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@retlawx10 he waited a month before testing them so they had plenty of time to cure.

    • @hannahbassett7541
      @hannahbassett7541 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When you say a month of curing time, does that mean you can’t/shouldn’t use the room for a month?

    • @retlawx10
      @retlawx10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@hannahbassett7541 just have to be really careful or the surface will scratch really easy. With waterbase finishes, you could be walking on your floors after a few hours. Oil base takes 6 hours or longer and all depends on the temperature in side the house.
      I have coated thousands of floors and all types wood species

    I’m a custom hardwood flooring manufacturer and this is the most extensive test I have seen I mean look at the scratching machine they painted a logo on it. And good choice of product comparison from the readily available to more professional poly and the breakdown of cost per sq ft per coat you are a very detailed person. My suggestion to anyone if you have this guy do your floors he’s not skipping steps . Great job !

    The world needs more of this quality of content. As a person who works with lots of clinical study designs, I can say this is probably the best designed product comparison test i've ever seen on youtube. You have a head for this kind of video and I'd like to see you make more product comparison videos please!

    Been in the industry for 10 years now and traffic HD and pallmann gold are the only two that I ever use. I can safely say they will last and also won’t run my customers out of their homes for too long due to quick dry/cure times and low VOCs. Your video is awesome and I will recommended to my customers if they are ever curious to know!

    Seth, outstanding video!! My adult son and I bought a box truck today and we are turning it into his tiny-home. The floor is relatively new, but needs refinished before we build on it. I owned my own construction company years ago and you taught me a few things. Thank you.
    Beyond that, I normally have to watch numerous videos to fully understand which product to use (not specifically floor finishes, just in general searches of 'How To'). Seriously impressed with your preciseness. I can tell you are quite intelligent and took this very serious. High respect for you and what you did here. Sorry for the low number of watches. This deserves much more praise and higher traffic. Well done.

    Thank you SO much for this! I know absolutely nothing about refinishing floors, but am seeking estimates to have our floor refinished. Of course everyone coming in says something different. Never in my wildest imagination did I think I'd sit and watch a nearly 25 minute long presentation on this subject, but I'm so glad I did. Again, thank you for your diligent work and for sharing it and your "scientific" opinion (unbiased). It is easy to find ads/commercial videos, but this, this was perfect!

    This has been a huge help.
    I spoke with a large company that does it around here. This is what I learned. Water-based products dry quickly and hard with little smell and doesn't change the color of the wood. The problem with water-based is while hard, it cracks from high localized loads. Oil-based takes longer to dry, so you might want to leave for few days, and it will add a honey color which people often like and makes it look deeper. As to which one is best? Oil-based wins for staying nicer, longer. Moreover, due to EPA, oil based is (for them at least) is only sold in quarts, thereby making it more expensive.
    The products they use are the Bona poducts.

    What a thorough and systematic side-by-side comparison! I really love that you tried to be as consistent throughout as possible. I love the fact that you tried to cover as many variables so that your viewers could make decisions based on what is important to us: VOCs, price per square foot adjusted for the viscosity of the liquid, scratching under different "laboratory" conditions, color effect... You have the approach of a scientist. The only thing that would have made it more unbiased was if you didn't know which sample was which as you did the test, and you allowed for that, too, with your clever testing mechanisms! Nice job! I'll bet you could get a salaried job with a big fat paycheck at a finish manufacturer based on this video alone.

    I appreciate the time and effort that this very nice gentleman put into this, BUT keep in mind, this video is about only one type of floor finish- Polyurethane ( water and oil), that is purchased at home centers. There are a few other type of wood floor finishes that professionals use, found at specialty stores, those being Hard Wax, Moisture cured, Conversion Varnishes, UV cured, Aluminum Oxide. Some of these are not practical for the DIYer, but there are many that are. ( Rubio, Glitsa, Loba, to name a few)

  • @DavidA-411
    @DavidA-411 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Big compliments on the detail you put into this test of finishes. Pretty funny too.
    I'm a bit disappointed with the results evaluation though.
    You focus on scratch resistance and scuff resistance between samples and grade them by looks. It seemed to me that they all were relatively noticeable and so it's still hard to use this information to say definitively that any one finish is the definite winner when you compare durability to price and ease of application. Another important factor not explored is the repair factor. I have always used Shellac to first coat the floors. I even have a fir floor in my house that I refinished 25 years ago and only used a thick one coat shellac finish and it has held up great. Scratches are easily repaired by using a small rag bunched up into a bun shape to apply a thin application over a scratch and hand buffed out for any easy way to make scratches disappear.
    Easy of repair, if any, should also be factored in.

      Yeah thanks for the feedback. For sure the evaluation was defiantly based on the durability like how fast they wore threw and how deep they scratched. Other factors like you say ease of repair and also maybe ease of use, value and how toxic would change my ranking.

      I use shellac on some of my woodworking. It works very well and is more durable in practice than the finishing literature might lead me to believe.

    Thank you so much for all the work you did to make this video. I had spent hours researching the best product to use on a wood floor refinishing project in my house and all I could find was marketing BS, with each product claiming to be the best. Thanks to your video, I learned about PolyWhey products, and decided to use them. I used PolyWhey 3000 sealer and PolyWhey 3500 to finish the floors. Never would have heard about this product without your video since none of the home improvement stores sell this brand, and it feels good to know it's one of the top performers while also having very low VOCs.

    Wow.
    Thank you for spending the time to share this with us. I know I surely appreciate it, and I'm sure this will help a lot of people in the future as well.
    Something to help future videos maybe;
    You should consider putting all the info you gathered into a table for a few seconds during the video (maybe I missed it?) Or down in the description.
    For example:
    Name (like you did already), price per gallon, price per sq. foot, VOC.. etc.
    Not trying to criticize, I think you did better than I could have for sure, just trying to help based on what I see from popular videos similar to this.

    Thank you for making this video! You are so thorough and it was such a fun video to watch for me! I refinish furniture for a living and have been told that Diamond finish was SO great...but not so!! I also have a TH-cam with tips, this is going to help me so much in which finish to choose for which projects! Thank you again!

    I appreciate your attention to detail.
    I wish i cared about anything as much or even 1/2 as much as you care about covering all the bases, factors, possibilities, and ensurng all variables are controlled during testing
