The Celica That Toyota Should’ve Built: 1UZ Powered RA65

  • The mod journey that Frank de Jesus took on this RA65 Toyota Celica a tale older than time. Needing more power in his daily, but being appalled at the cost of a turbo kit for the engine in the car already, Frank took it into his own hands to swap the car with one of Toyota’s finest V8s ever made: the 1UZ. The result? OEM looks, with much more power. And better noises. Win.

They fill a roll that not much else does. Calling it a disease is like saying AE86s and Silvias were a disease in the drift community.

I did use all the parts in the head though including the cams. My uncle had a Celica just like that one you modified. I am a big fan and I am super impressed with what you did with that Celica. My favourite Celica build ever! Love how it looks like it was made factory from Toyota. The little touches and all the oem parts, the 1UZ conversion is the best and the air box mod to fit it in, the entire engine bay is one of the cleanest example ever and as a daily driver you’d love to driver it as you’re daily. Frank you are a legend much respect too you’re build you would inspired a lot of Toyota and car lovers too create this agian i know you have inspired me and one day im going to build me something like this 🙌🔥

My father bought one of these new. I eventually had it in later on after my older brother gave it back to my father as a beater. I loved that car. I lost it in a accident, unfortunately. If a chance appeared to buy one, I'd do it. An '85 GT-S hatchback.

I'm 61 yrs old and retired NYPD. My partner had a Celica GTS new. It was the car to get for young 20 somethings like us back in the day who wanted a little more room that you got with the Corolla SR5 along with the Datsun/Nissan 200SX. I was the oddball so I drove a Mitsubishi built pre-Starion Dodge Challenger/Plymouth Sapporo. The stock motor in Celica GT and GTS was the 2.2 liter 22R. Wasn't much was available for these engines. The hot ticket was to ditch the stock fuel injection and slap on a pair of Mikuni 40mm sidedraft carbs along with a cam.

I can remember sitting in the car in the driveway as a kid rowing through the gears and pretending I was driving down a back road. It's one of my first car memories. His even had the rear glass louvers like this one. Thanks to the owner for sharing - it brings back some memories.

@@scottkraus3492 I'll share details in my upcoming videos, but I had to remake and reroute the 3rd and 4th runners and make the collector exit a little bit more outboard than stock, so that it'll clear the steering shaft. Start by cutting off he collector with the O2 sensor bung, and then you'll see where it has to go

I’ve owned 3 MkII Supras and always wanted to 2jz swap one but never knew a 1uz would fit. I worked at a Toyota dealership in the early 90’s and I used to see Celicas, Supras and Cressidas regularly and my first one was an 85 Supra with a 5 speed and factory 4.30 rear gears that earned me a few tickets, even with the 5MGE only rated at 168hp. This brings back a lot of memories. Great build!
