- Part two of Elvis '71 concentrates on the sessions in Nashville, where Elvis would record in Studio B for the last time. Also featured are import CDs of live recordings from 1971.
For clarity, the reason I refer to the 'Showroom Internationale' set as a bootleg and don't do the same when talking about the MRS releases is down to a matter of timing. When the former was released, the recordings were not in the public domain, so, therefore, it wasn't a legal release.
Love everything from 69 to 73 , 74 to 77 was pretty dame good as well.
Luv the show.
Thanks for watching. The big difference between those 2 periods being the amount of studio material Elvis actually recorded. It's such a shame that in the last 4 years, a man who loved music so much felt little desire to record it anymore
Can't wait for 72 ,love that year in his career
Hey Paul, 72 certainly was a great year and I enjoyed doing those episodes, they won't start until the week after next though, as I have something a little different coming up this Sunday 😉
@@sincerelyelvispresley oh cool ,can't wait
Hi, Sean. Great content and collection once again. You always manage to pull out something I've never even seen before. I largely agree with your comments about the music from 1971 being overlooked. Perhaps that was partly due to the secular material being spread across different releases, but I agree the standard is not quite as high as 1970. Having said that, I would like to stand up for Elvis' version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. As you know, it was the first thing he sang in the studio that year and he injects a little joy into the song. He sings like he's going to be seeing a lot more of that face whereas Roberta Flack sounds like she's singing to her dying husband 😆The duets are fascinating but not a success. The women both sound nervous to me. Naturally enough.
Thank you David, I'm chuffed that I manage to share something new to you, although that well will inevitably dry up one of these days 🙂 I take your point about The First Time, but whenever I hear it, I can't escape the feeling that I expected more somehow, perhaps it's down to the the arrangement. Your dying husband analogy has made my morning, though! 🤣
Hi Sean, another great video. I have a lot of what you showed and I must admit I agree with you about "Like a black tornado" CD....it's fabulous 😍 and Elvis was wearing one of my favourite jumpsuits of that period ..the Black Mathador ❤❤
@A.P087 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! The black jumpsuit is awesome, isn't it?
Thanks Sean.. I'm late with this second part of 1971😂 I have the time now to watch all your great stuff❤
@@elvis78ale thanks so much, I really appreciate you watching and glad you enjoy them 🙂
Hi, Sean love your video my friend
Cheers my friend!
Great video my friend ,1971 one year before I was born😁, a bit overlooked but it still gave us great music ,have a nice week brother👍
Thanks buddy, how was Grease?
@@sincerelyelvispresley grease was great ,they mentioned Elvis😃 it was a flemish cast and they did a great job ,yeah a lot of fun👍
@DavidHuletlevensgoesting excellent, glad you had a good time. Have a great week 👍🏻
1971 I feel is overlooked
When it is a great year for him
A good point, it was a good year and most definitely often overlooked
I agree with you regarding the MRS releases I have them all, with the latest one on the way. This 1971 release is a great one. Far better value for money than FTD
You're right there, they are better value, and score points for being way more accessible to everyone, available from all good high street stores, as the saying goes!
Great and informative video Sean! 👍🏻
Thank you my friend! 👍🏻
Great video Seán. I love 1971 Elvis but unfortunately it's totally overlooked. It's like a missing year for some reason. 👍
You're dead right, in fact spending around an hour talking about 71 has given me a whole new perspective on it
Good one today! Great import release. 999 total copies. Nice label, also did the Complete Works :TTWII. But you probably know...
Thank you, yes it's a really nice package. I've always wanted a copy of The Complete Works, but it's always gone for more than I've been prepared to pay for it
It’s a shame he didn’t go with a modern folk album, I think it would have been a great companion to Country. There are a lot of Dylan songs I would loved Elvis to have arranged and performed.
Imagine if he'd been allowed total artistic freedom, without the demands of "give us a new Christmas album" etc. no telling what he could have achieved
Hi Sean, hope you’re well. It is an interesting compromise between the 70 and 71 sessions. Despite his level of fame, Elvis struggled to obtain original material to record from the point groups like The Beatles began to write and keep their own songs. There are even stories of a shortage of material during what would become the triumphant 69 Sessions. Anyway, I just picked up an interesting album - Tom Jones Live In Las Vegas At The Flamingo 1969. We Know EP went to watch the Welsh wizard as research. If you ever listen to this record (perhaps you have) you’ll pick up the similarities. Even down to the Lennon/McCartney covers, which always perplexed me as Elvis was cute enough not to go near material made popular by other big stars. Incidentally, the band TJ had at that time was considered the best in Las Vegas - the opinion of Buddy Rich - with musicians who went on to be successful with other acts. Gary
Hi Gary, I'm good thanks, hope the same goes for you? I've never been a fan of Tom Jones tbh. My dad had a 'Live At The Talk Of The Town' LP around the time I was getting into Elvis as a kid, and even at that age I appreciated the subtle shades and layers that Elvis was able to bring to a vocal performance, whereas to these ears, Jones just seemed to bellow his way through everything regardless
@@sincerelyelvispresleyLOL! I love that description of Tom Jones bellowing his way through everything regardless 😊 We have a singer in Australia (John Farnham) who has been around forever and is very popular because he can project his voice to the other side of Australia, but I have never liked him much for that reason just being loud doesn't make him a good singer.🤔
Enjoyed this video enormously Sean. I have all you showed except the bootleg boxed set which looks fantastic and one i knew nothing about. Take care, Julie x
Thanks Julie, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Another great video Sean 👏
1971 !!
I have all you have shown there ...apart from the bootleg CD 💿 set ...but have seen that around !
I agree the 71 sessions were not as good as the 1970 Nashville sessions 😊! But some incredible material was recorded ....i love TFTEISYF !!
Ive always thought some of the single releases in 71 were not the strongest....Life / Only Belive for instance !! Was a weak single release for me !
Im Leaving should have been a bigger hit also !?
Still on top form in 71 ....but i also believe some of his personal problems were also starting to effect his life / moods !
Good video....lots of info 👌
Cheers 🎙🎶🥂
Cheers Paul 👍🏻 you're right about some of the material chosen for single releases, I hadn't really considered that until you mentioned it
@@sincerelyelvispresley I'm not entirely sure some of the singles in 1970 were the strongest either 🙄😀!!
Good Stuff Sean 🎙🎶🥂
Good point, it's as if the business machine around him was constantly working to undermine all the great things he was doing, not so much in the 50s, when the majority of the choices made were the right ones, but it was definitely downhill from then on in terms of handling his career
@@sincerelyelvispresley Such an incredible difference to the American sessions just 2 years earlier 🙄 !!
How quickly things turned around again ! Elvis had so much planned after the 68 special/ 69 recording!
I think Elvis himself wasn't even sure in which direction to go qiute often 🤔.....not even too sure how much of an impact he had on his own material that was been released and remixed ! He should have been a lot stronger.....and got shot of Parker 😡🤡! Pisses me off at times !! 🎙🎶🥂
Yeah agree, it's an easy trap to fall into to blame everyone else, but some of the responsibility has to lie with Elvis, he could have and should have taken more control of his destiny.
How on earth do you keep up with all these releases - books, records. CDs. etc - I've never heard of many of them. Were they all coming out over the past 40 years, or have they only been produced over the past 5 or 10 years?
Hiya Gina, I know exactly what you mean! I'd say the lion's share of the books and CD sets I share have been released in the last 10-15 years or so. In terms of keeping up with what's being released, I make heavy use of a couple of websites - The Elvis Information Network (from your neck of the woods) and Elvis Day By Day
Did you get one or two comments from me Sean? I can't see the first one now
I saw the one about 72, was there one before that?
@@sincerelyelvispresley yea lol
Disappearing comments is no new thing sadly. Can you still see it?
@@sincerelyelvispresley no it's gone , just really saying that I feel 1971 was maybe Elvis,s last truly happy year personally.we all know what happened 72,73 with Priscilla etc and then after that being stuck in Vegas etc
Yes, I can definitely see what you mean, but I think the 70 Nashville sessions had a more joyful and freewheeling feel, so maybe I'd lean towards 1970 being that year
