The A Legendary Performer volume 1 album was one of the first albums I owned. I loved that one, I loved the Booklet that came with it a pured over it this was back when finding printed material was not that easy it gave me a glimpse of his past up till then. But your video was the first time I ever thought about this release as a product of the back catalog sale a year before.
Great video, thank you! About "Legendary performer vol 1", the studio version of "Can't help falling in love" is unique to the record version, it has the Jordainaires very low in the mix, very cool to hear! The later (uncomplete) Canada cd version did not follow that one and released the basic one.
First time viewer. I'm a lifetime Elvis fan and I learned a few things about this year watching this video. First off I had never heard of that 2 disc 40 song collection before now, perhaps because it was not released in Canada. My first exposure to the back catalog after that horrendous deal was the 5 disc 3 album box set release through Tee Vee.
Thanks for watching, really appreciate it. I think you're probably right in that the 40 Greatest Hits wasn't released in that format in Canada. There were various other variants in other countries though, and Canada certainly didn't go short when it came to compilations, that's for sure! I think I know the Tee Vee set you mean, was it called 'A Collector's Edition'?
Great video as usual, j look forward to them every week. It makes me laugh the way you beat yourself up when you make a blunder or forget something. Keep up the good work and look forward to 1975. Luv the show.
Thank you Mark, appreciate the support as always. I can't help it, before I press record I have an outline in my head of what I want to talk about, and sometimes I have a crib sheet to try and help me remember key dates or numbers, but I usually end up veering away from the point once I start waffling on 🤣
Ah, the 40 Greatest on Arcade. I have great memories of listening to that on cassette, recorded using the condenser mic on a portable cassette recorder. It didn't matter about the hiss. It didn't even matter that the mic picked up my mum saying "sausage, egg and chips" (that was what we had for tea that night). It was just great music. Nice look back on '74 that, Sean.
@@sincerelyelvispresley I don't miss much about Blighty, but I do miss a good plate of sausage, egg and chips. The sausages here are not the same and no one has a chip pan.
The ink on that deal, Elvis selling the rights to his songs, wasn’t even dry before RCA set the wheels in Motion. Two months later, May 1973, they licensed rights to Brookville records. The latter released a 2-LP which sold millions, Elvis didn’t receive a dime. Same in the UK/Europe. Two massive sellers, Elvis Forever» and «Elvis’ 40 Greatest», both 2-LP, outsold his regular albums tenfold and then some.
Yes indeed, I managed to completely forget to mention those Brookville releases last time around, but you're absolutely right, they certainly wasted no time in getting a return on their investment and milking the back catalogue for all it was worth
74 it seems there was an increase in sort of...extreme things happening, with some moments best forgotten about, but on the other hand I think of it as being a good year. There were gigs where I really think he looked and sounded so much better than he had in a long time. Sometimes not too far off sounding as good as he did in 1970. Love the live album you mentioned and have enjoyed other 74 gigs a lot. To be honest I actually even like desert storm. The monologues are hard to listen to but it's a really interesting listen where he's really going for it and making little changes here and there, doing the songs a bit differently. Sometimes it's a bit OTT but I think a lot of these moments landed well too. I wonder if he wasn't into recording because by this stage he had started to realise that he was in some ways simply a commodity in some people's eyes? He seems to have dove much deeper into his karate stuff which was always an interest to him but he was much more vocal and public etc with it. Maybe he felt this was something for him, which he did for the love of doing it, and where he could pursue his interest whereas on the music side of things he was being worked like a mule for those ridiculous Vegas gruelling slogs doing show after show after show and not even having the artistic licence to do it how he wanted (ie his experience and feelings after the opening gig you mentioned).
Hi, yes I agree, there were definitely good shows throughout 74. You're quite right, karate become a much bigger distraction for him in 74, particularly with the eventually abandoned New Gladiators project. I should really have mentioned that 🙂 Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Hey Juan, thanks for watching. The dragon suit is a thing of beauty to see close up, isn't it? See you next week and thanks, as always, for the support! 🙂
Hi Sean, great video 😊. I love 1974...that concert in Memphis on March 20, if I'm not wrong, is one of my favourites ❤ A great energy. I love the "animal" series of jumpsuits, especially the Peacock and the Chinese Dragon 🐉
Hi there, no you're spot on with that, March 20th was the recording released and it certainly was a great show. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the continued support 👍🏻
Hi Sean, I really loved this episode and the deep dive into studio recordings concerts and jumpsuits all covered here. I think a lot of performers without naming any names become lazy in their careers, and decide that they can't be really bothered to produce new material and new songs so they just keep repeating the same old songs. Then they blame the audience for not responding favourably. Their shows become basically a greatest hits tour year after year. Yes they need 'to shake it up' but they also need to set some challenges too for themselves. I too remember hiring Elvis 40 Greatest Hits from Croydon Music Library i was living in Croydon at the time and had to wait 11 weeks in a queue!! once I got it I recorded off my sisters record player a great introduction to the different vocal styles and different songs that Elvis covered right there .I finally bought the record about a year ago, not to play it but just for the great memories it evoked for me I also agree with you about the Elvis Good Times CD just amazing shame it never got more attention out there with the record buying public. Again I totally agree with you about the Memphis record cover makes no sense putting Elvis' mansion on there. I just wanted to know which missing tracks are there from American Sound and Stax which your referring too? I thought everything had been released. A really fantastic report. Take Care
@dinshawpocha4882 Hi Dinshaw, really glad you enjoyed the episode and I appreciate you taking the time to watch it. The 40 Greatest should be known as the catalyst album as it seems to have been the starting point for so many of us who were a little too young to have been there right from the start. There were a fair few American Sound and Stax songs left off of the 5 disc Memphis box set, namely And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind Girl of Mine I'll Be There If I'm A Fool (For Loving You) Inherit The Wind A Little Bit of Green Love Song of the Year Mr. Songman My Little Friend Rubberneckin' Thinking About You This Is The Story Who Am I? To me, they should all have been included in place of the 74 Memphis show and then it could genuinely have claimed to be a complete overview of all the material recorded in Elvis’s home town.
@@sincerelyelvispresley Hi Sean. Thank you for listing all those songs. I listened to a few tracks from the Elvis/Memphis Box Set on You Tube and I have to say the mix was horrid!! I'm glad I didn't waste my money on that release. Particularly Daddy Don't Cry where Elvis duets with himself with added echo which ruins the original feeling that the original recording had. I think Sony Legacy realise that there is a very big market to produce Elvis records but don't want to spend the money improving the sound quality. In comparison looking at From Elvis In Nashville I really got the feeling of being in the recording studio at the time, even the follow up to this Elvis Return To Nashville was an excellent mix. Like you I don't know why Sony decided to add the Memphis show maybe it was easier for them to do that then add more songs from your list.
@dinshawpocha4882 completely agree that the quality on the Memphis set is very patchy, but the Stax and particularly the Jungle Room material fares the best
@@sincerelyelvispresley Hi Sean, Doesn't this make you wonder how many times are Sony going to keep reissuing the same material again and again? Seems to me that once I purchase a box set if I'm happy with the way it sounds why do I need to re-purchase again with a different essay write up and different photos? Surely there are only so many times Elvis fans will keep purchasing what is the same product. The FTD series has now come to an end and nothing is replacing that. All we can actually look forward to are two new Elvis movies from Buz Luhrmann That's The Way It Is and Elvis On Tour with new unreleased material. Then Sony will no doubt start all over again with CD's and albums remixed no doubt. With regards to Elvis books I located an amazing all colour hardback book called From The Graceland Archives Iconic Stage Wear which has some amazing photos still available for £25- plus postage and packing on the Graceland website. Still available though I bought mine at the Elvis Arches Exhibition a while back.
@dinshawpocha4882 I know what you mean, but as long as we still keep buying them, they'll keep on releasing them. I think FTD still has some way to go yet, there are plenty of full session sets to go. I know which book you mean, I have that one too, it's a nice one 👍🏻
Thanks for the video ❤ It's always interesting. A shame there isn't a lot from this year, at least professionally 😢 I love his 1974 jumpsuits ...maybe it's the last year they were sober 😂😂 From 1975 they started to be "too much" for me , at least most of them.
The record live in Memphis, the person who took the photo for the cover mucked it up apparently and it wasn't discovered till later on . The colonel was pissed off and the only thought was to take photos of Graceland instead of looking back at their photos of Elvis and taking one from there .
Hey brother , your collection of books is mindboggling , I marvel at them ,especialy the Keiran Davis books , an explanation of Elvis not recording could be that he did so much touring that year ,I believe its his busyest touring year to date ,or he just did nt feel like recording ,in any case its a shame because his voice kept getting stronger and stronger ,imagine what great music he could have done at that time , great video and great information Sean ,thank's for showing 💜you and Sara have a great week my friend👍👍
Thanks brother, the Keiran Davis books are great, but they are getting harder to find now. I completely forgot to include the latest book on 74 by your friend Arjan! Have a great week too!
Hi Sean, for anyone that wants one there is someone on eBay selling copies of the 74 KD book for £80. They’re my favourite books and I think I’m missing one volume (never could locate the KD website). I don’t have a problem with the 74 Memphis show being on the new box. Let’s face it, there’s nothing new on it, but we bought it as it was reasonably affordable - certainly if, like me, you’ve been trying to source FTD books. Interestingly, I compared the Legacy set with the Memphis box version of the concert and I had to raise the volume by 5db on the newer release to get it to the same level of the Legacy. Those double sets were/are a real bargain. Aloha last week, Memphis this and the Today Legacy was also excellent. Definitely recommended to people building a collection on a budget. I love the 7” FTDs, though the only one I had before I went to Graceland last year was Elvis Is Back. I bought a few at Graceland. I recently bought the Hits of the 70s FTD from Elvis Shop London and Chris currently has new copies of that and the stunning original American Sound FTD for £30 each. I had to chuckle when I saw that the original AS FTD has a couple of tracks not on the 5 disc upgrade. Such great booklets with those 7” releases. Kieran’s books are so good I convinced myself I didn’t need Fashion Fit For A King. However, a copy came up for under £200 and so PayPal pay in 3 was initiated. The first half of 2025 will be spent acquiring extra copies of the King Creole FTD in anticipation I can rip as many poor buggers off in future as have been ripping me! Not sure I can justify the price being asked for VLV! You’ll be pleased to hear an autographed print of the cover of Bonnie Tyler’s Faster Than The Speed Of Night album has joined Elvis On Stage in the throne room. I picked up the Live In LA book for £40. Regards, Gary
Hi Gary, that's not a bad price for the Kieran book. It's the same price on Elvis 4 Sale too. Agree that all of his books are great, the only ones I don't have are the 76 titles, either the separate volumes or the reissued combined one. Finding his site is a challenge, but Google 'Kieran Davis Elvis books' and scroll down until you see DD Fossils - My Business- The Elvis Presley Show. That's the one. Absolutely agree about the 2 disc Legacy CDs, great value and quality to boot. I'd rather have had the missing studio tracks on the Memphis set instead of the live show, I think it would have felt much more cohesive that way. As always, thanks for watching 👍🏻
It's a real shame that Elvis didn't have a challenge in 74 ,I firmly believe he was looking for it but it was too close to 73 for another TV special and he wasn't allowed to tour outside the states . It may have being the perfect year to have taken off and recharged the batteries. I really do enjoy the 74 soundboards etc thou
