Henry 10 year is my all time favorite!!!
You are not the only one. People love this bottle. I am thinking I got a not so great single barrel.
I’m watching this on my lunch break and I’m smiling ear to ear. MB and Peter are just so good together. I enjoyed this review much much more than the McKenna 10 year itself. I was not happy when it was $48 per. At $70 per bottle I don’t think I’d be happy.
Thanks. Like I've said before... It's a lot of fun having her on the channel. She will be with me for the remainder Wednesdays in February. Cheers.
I was watching on my lunch break too and though, "Damn, I talk too much!" Glad we could make you smile. We're together for the entire month of February for his Sip it or Skip it segments. My new goal for March is now to make you laugh so you spit out your food on your lunch break. Is that mean??? Cheers!
Speaking of eye contact. I worked with the Norwegians for years. When you “skol” (their version of cheers) you must make eye contact. I find mine palate similar to yours. I also like to hear your sister’s opinion. Keep the content coming.
More content on the way! I'm with my sister for the rest of my Wednesday series in February.
You two are great together! Love Henry McKenna 10 Year BIB. Since it is hard to find by me, I picked it up whenever I saw it for retail. I have 4 bottles on the shelf and will not need to buy it again. I paid $59.99 each. 🥃
Thank you! I hope the rest of the episodes we shot that day are also interesting. I know some of the whiskey was....well, at least for Peter they were! 🤣
Thanks. It's great to have my sister on the channel. We shot 4 sip or skips for February. Stay tuned. Cheers!
from the UK. and cheers is what i say all the time, no need to look into the eyes, though nothing wrong to do that if only 2 of yous. its a thank you to the world! it should be said in good spirit and whoever hears it should take in the cheers! lol
Well said. Cheers to the UK!
There is a fresh pallet of this at Costco in Palm Desert, Ca. For 54 and change. I stocked up this morning.
I blame you...stock up! Cheers!
Now regarding Peated Scotch. I’m thinking Mary Bridget would enjoy Ardbeg 10 year. A more earthy and char smoke imo. Maybe to ease the transition to Peated scotch Black Bottle or Johnnie Walker Black 12 year?
She had a slightly peated scotch that will come out at the end of February. She liked it, but it was ever so slightly peated. We will see how her tolerance is in the coming months.
I’m a fan of Henry McKenna 10. I personally haven’t had a bad bottle yet. I like the price point for a 10 year old bottle. Thanks for sharing.
I'm getting another bottle to compare this one to.
Love your reviews! Great chemistry!
Thanks. My sister adds a lot to the channel when she is able to be on. I was lucky this month and she was able to do 5 videos with me for February.
Nice review! While this is my favorite bourbon, given the dynamics with such a changing flavor profile, I like how it finished with the sweeter note almost like a cinnamon red hot candy. The bourbon lingers and slows the sip in a way that a single pour is all I need to enjoy an evening. I too am extremely disappointed in the pricing. This was a $46.99 MSRP bourbon and the industry has just bastardized the pricing.
I need to get another bottle and compare it to the one I have. Maybe I just got a sub par single barrel. 🤔
@@whiskeyisajourney That happens, especially with single barrels it seems.
Just got a bottle last Tuesday.
I need to pick up anther one to compare to the one I have now. I need to see if I have a sub par bottle.
Forget bourbon, I want the cake! Loved this!!
It was delicious.
LOL! My first time making a cake from scratch. I wasn't bad. We should have found a whiskey to pair with it. That would have made a fun episode! Cheers!
That is a great idea!!!@@mary-bridgetfasciano9970
Great chemistry guys! Keep up with the great content
Thanks. More to come. Cheers!
First thing watching a video with your sister! Absolutely dynamite chemistry 👍
It's a lot of fun having her on the channel. We shot 4 Sip It or Skip It videos along with this one. More to come with her in February.
Thanks for sharing the review. Great to see Mary Bridget back! I know this bottles seems to be a love or hate, but the open bottle that I have is very good. Cheers!
I'm thinking my bottle is just okay. With so many people loving it I think I need to get another bottle to compare. Maybe my bottle is not the best version of what it could be. Can single barrels be that much different?
@@whiskeyisajourney sounds like a good comparison experiment! I don’t have enough experience with different single barrels of the same offering, but I know that Josh from Stuff & Whiskey is big on “batch variance”, so when it comes to a single barrel, I’ve got to think there could be some wide variety!
It was fun to be back. I'm learning so much from doing this with him and from reading all the comments. I had no idea that taste can vary so much from one bottle to another. So interesting!
Just tried first bottle of McKenna. First neck pour had a smooth taste on front end but finished kind of strange but not off putting , just different, almost fruity / deserty. After letting it sit for 25 min had a different taste and was phenomenal. Tbh it is now in my top 5 of all that I have open. I was pleasantly surprised.
That's great. You are not alone. A lot of people love this bottle. I'm going to get another bottle and compare it to this one. I might have gotten a not so good single barrel.
Great discussion on oak vs tannins vs barrel char BTW. It’s something that’s hard to discern and maybe even more difficult to vocalize, but it’s important to try. For me, oak comes across as various shades of woodiness and when integrated well with a vanilla note in aged bourbons can become very sweet. Tannic oak notes hit me the same way a dry red wine would on the palate and is the only way I can really read those. Barrel char is a real wildcard as it can provide a very pleasant addition to the complexity where I pick up a bit of the charred wood and extra wood sugars but it can also go smokey or burnt and funky (which can be very good, very bad, or very interesting and confusing). May have to livestream a discussion on tasting notes and how they read to different folks.
@stuffandwhiskey I think a discussion about tasting notes would be a great topic to listen to. I get confused all the time about what I think I'm getting. Couple that with doing it in front of a camera over a relatively short window of time and then try to vocalize what I'm getting proves to be very difficult at times. I'm getting better, but I recognize I still have a long way to go to be where I want to be with my ability to dissect a whiskey and describe what I'm getting. Cheers!
Great review, I've only drank one bottle and it was worth the $45 I paid. I have another bottle, but haven't opened it yet. It's a good bourbon at $50 and under. Alway enjoy when your sister reviews with you, thanks again
We have 4 more together in February. All on Wednesdays.
You guys work great together.. :)
It's so much fun having her on the channel. Good times.
Love it when the both of you review a bottle 😂. The Henry McKenna is a decent bottle but way overpriced. Cheers!
Thanks! I enjoy being on and always hope he reviews something I like when I am. I didn't get so lucky this month with his Sip it or Skip it segments. I'm with him every Wednesday this month for them, so stay tuned! Cheers!
I agree with both statements. I like it when my sister is on the channel and I think HM is over priced. Cheers!
Mary Bridget is always an awesome addition to videos!
I have her on for a few more videos in February. We batch shot on the day she came over and knocked out all the sip or skip videos for February.
You guys described this perfectly. I poured some and searched for reviews and found yours! Cheers🥃
It’s really good and I drink it neat. It’s too dynamic to dilute.
I think it’s barrel char… that isn’t based on science, just gut feeling.
With the amount of people that like this bottle I'm wondering if my bottle is not the best representation of the product. I need to get another one and compare the profile of the two bottles. Cheers!
I'm new to Henry McKenna, I'm half way into my first bottle. This might be a 5/5 for me, I think it's just a fantastic pour. Very hard for me to find in Denver, I think it was around $55 once located. I'll keep a bottle of this in the cabinet if possible.
Oh wow! That's great. I'm thinking that my bottle is just an okay single barrel. I will probably get another bottle to compare it to and see how much variation there is.
I love McK10 and people are starting to really find out how wonderful this bottle is. It’s still $49 a bottle on Maui but it’s starting to increase in price. So shhhh🤫…lol
Cheers and Aloha.
That's a fantastic price. I might have to pick up another bottle to compare to the one I have. Maybe my single barrel is not that good
I like how your sister thinks and explains things. And then how you have someone to play off of. Good addition. The best whiskey shows aren't just one guy talking. The real best ones are from two types of different people (think SLB and not BRT).
I like having another person to play off of instead of playing with myself. 🤣
OMG Peter! If that starts to happen, I will never come back! But I will come back because people think we make a great team. They are just discovering it, but I knew it all along. 😉 We will continue to partner up when our schedules allow it. We enjoy it as much as people seem to, and I think it obvious when you watch us. Thank you for your feedback! It is much appreciated. Cheers!
I have tasted more than a few Henry McKenna and for me, this bottle is like my industry standard. Henry McKenna can vary quite a bit which some may say could be a hit or miss. I just say they are all good, just that some bottles are better, even phenomenal. My take is that this one is a traditional crabby old guy bourbon that's simple yet has some subtle complexity.
Availablity in my area is not so good and I paid between $52-$60. Your sister is correct because I find McKenna 100 proof to be on the more savory side/less sweet which is why I call it traditional.
I am going to pick up another bottle to compare to the one I have now and see how much variation if any there is between the two bottles. I have to give my sister credit on her notes. She does a good job.
Nice review! My first McKenna was harsh and really not good, kept trying over the next 6 months and it got slightly better (barely okay), then I tried another bottle and it’s much better so far and hoping it gets better as I keep having it! Got my second bottle at Costco for 55.00
I'm going to get another bottle to compare this one to. Hopefully I can find one at Costco.
Nice review Peter! I’m a fan of wood heavy bourbons but I like Henry McKenna quite a bit. I find it a good middle of the road bourbon. It’s got a little of everything (spice, fruit, wood, caramel) but not especially impressive in any one direction….I suppose it’s impressive in its balance but I’d take a Knob Creek 12 over this most of the time.
I like the Knob Creek 12 as well and preferer it over the HM as well.
Great video. Those McKenna can be very different but normally still very good. Never had a bad one only really good to great
Based on what everyone is saying I am getting that idea. I am going to pick up another bottle to compare to this one.
So I feel like the oak gets more pronounced as you add more water. This is a single barrel so I do think there is a lot of variance in how these perform. This is a nice summer bourbon by the campfire for me. You have the citrus and vanilla nose and more vanilla and brown sugar on the pallet. I get more of a menthol cigarette note on the finish than barrel char. That menthol comes and goes for me.
I need to pick up a second bottle to compare to the one I have now. See if my single barrel is not as good as the others.
I would strongly prefer to see a rating *without* price taken into consideration.
What about a separate rating for "value" if you feel you need to offer something that takes price into consideration? For example, "Great value for what you're paying," "Poor value because it's expensive but not that good," et cetera.
I hear what you're saying. I think I can start doing that going forward. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers!
The last time I bought it, it was $30. 😊
I would be interested to know when and where that was? Was it before the dates we mentioned?
I would be interested to know when you paid that price as well.
Can’t wait for peated whiskey. Henry McKenna SB is pretty good for me, just so hard to find here.
12 weeks of Peated reviews coming up every Monday. Cask strength peated blind coming out Friday.
@@whiskeyisajourney peated one’s are currently my faves, Ardbeg and Talisker. Just tried peated Miyagikyo loved it a lot.
Debated between this bottle and Eagle Rare about a year ago. Have yet to see either in my area since. A local store has this and Russel’s single barrel both for $73.99 each. Wasn’t sure if either was worth the price at the moment so waited. KC I Single Barrel Reserve is $66.99 in my area and I have yet to try that either. Are any of the bottles worth the $$$?
I think the KC is fantastic. It was my whiskey of the year. It has a much different profile then the others you mentioned, but IMO it's very good.
In 2023, Henry McKenna 10 had jumped to $75 in Seattle. I was reluctant to spend that much on a hyped bourbon. When I saw it at Costco for $55, I pulled the trigger. I will say that I thought it was pretty good. But, I would have been disappointed if I had paid $75 plus Washington's grab-your-ankles tax.
$55 sounds more appealing than the $70 I got it for. I'll keep an eye out for it at my Costco.
I really find it hard to believe this rare bourbon could be found in Costco.
@@dietmdew845I picked some up today from my Costco for fifty dollars. I’ve never had it and now that I have I’m thinking should grab a backup bottle before it’s gone.
Oh before I forget can the bottle info be disclosed? When was it distilled and barreled? A buddy of mine has a theory on these. The ones bottled in the fall are better.
Barreled on 11-2-11
Interested that you didn't talk about how McKenna 10 is known for wildly varying in flavor and quality due to being genuine single barrel products.
I agree. I should have mentioned that. I know I did in my other single barrel reviews, I just left it out of this one.
For Single Malt, you need to try Andalusia Stryker.
I'll look out for it. I don't think it's in my market but I'll look.
i respect that opinion. but as soon as you said price. i said the exact same thing. 3 . ive got more of a taste for bourbon so id say 3.5
I've said this in other comments, but I think I might not have the best single barrel. Hopefully I can grab another one to compare. Cheers!
They snuck in a killer one off single barrel for the competition and it could never be replicated out on the shelves and for 35 bucks it's a good value but every year they went up 10 bucks till now, like you said it's way overpriced for the value. I used to buy it at 35 bucks but once it went up in price to the 40s I stopped buying it, I laugh at people buying it for 60s or trading for it on secondary!
I agree. It's too expensive for what it is. I think I'm going to get another bottle to compare to the one I have now. If it's the same I won't buy another one.
