    3:21 Andy hits the car with his cane and lets it fly out of his hand. He stands without it. This is symbolic of him giving up his crutch and standing on his own two feet. The crutch may have represented his obsession with Giardello or his alcoholism.

    So many emotions felt while watching Andy fight and claw and struggle to maintain his self worth and dignity. When a Pal tells you "I Think There's A Lot More Left In You" while it's chaotic around you...it's funny how that is the only thing you hear! Andy heard John loud and clear even while the Bust of The Wig Master and his Dingus Squad of Muppets was going down. One of those Slow Motion Moments when everything is so clear and quiet at the same time. It's a wonderful thing when a 3 plus minute video reminds me that Life Is Good and I'll be okay after all. Cheers From Ohio Everyone!

      "Back in my day..." yada yada yada. The world has changed--for the better? Worse? I guess that depends on whether you can deal with Life or not. Things always change, buddy. You can adapt and survive and be bitter and miserable as you "think" the world is falling apart because nobody is worth anything anymore....but then again, all the old phucks say that right? It was always better "back in the day". Yeah, you know why? You were much younger. That's the only real difference. Don't piss on all of it for the next generations, that's just dumbass bullshittery. There have been a good number of solid shows since NYPD Blue, if you take the time to check them out and remove your grumpy old boomer hat. And hey, I was born in the 60s, so save your usual reply for the millenials and just sack up, ffs. I'm not quite a boomer but I guess I'm close enough to just say to hell with your "glory days" mentality. "Get busy living or get busy dying." I think that's the quote that sums it up here.

  • @MoneyMakingMitchNY
    @MoneyMakingMitchNY 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That emotion from Franz in the car is what you call " real acting". In the same vain as Columbo, Perry Mason, Tony soprano, Walter white, we was blessed to have Andy for 12 years. Change isn't always fast. It took 12 years to see a man completely change. This show wasn't the most original cop show but it made you feel.
    Best season and best start of most shows. But thats because milch had more time to write the show since they had a disagreement in 92 with ABC and had to rewrite and change somethings. These characters are already thought out unlike others in the first handful of episodes or season.

    I love this clip from beginning to end. Picking one moment, in a strong field (season 1), this is the best of John Kelly. Whatever else, to (help) bring Andy from where he was when the show begins to this, is being a friend and a hero.
    Side note -- contrary to what I posted on one of these clips, the finale with Lois is not in the restaurant with Andy trying to relive the old days. It's in the season 2, Kelly finale, when she is (indirectly) responsible for the death of Howie Hornbeck. It precedes a very funny effort from Greg & Andy to get Howie's body dressed and in his car...

      Recently reminded the actor playing Alphonse Giardella plays the cop who gets Bruce Willis's car towed at the start of Die Hard 2. A movie featuring Dennis Franz playing, stunningly, a cop. Seem to remember Franz saying Sipowicz was his something like 28th cop role. They won't, but if they ever rebooted NYPD Blue, it would have to focus elsewhere. No one else could even have a go at Sipowicz.

    At the time, ... we were all stupid when we were younger, and I was pretty young when I watched Hill Street Blues, and to me Sipowicz and Norm Buntz seemed like very similar characters. Rewatching those shows decades later I can see that they we far more dimensional and far more different than I had thought.
    My favorite Norm Buntz scene was when he was ... when the Captain arrives at the scene and finds IAB saying it appears to be a completely justified shooting, except that the Coroner hasn't been able to get to the body because Norm is so pissed off that he keeps attacking the guy, shouting about "You just HAD to make me do it! You think everybody doesn't know that I wanted to kill you?"
    Norm figured he had just ended his career because, on top of a pile of other reasons people would like to see him fired, he had good reason to want to kill the suspect but had been restraining himself, but saw the guy draw a gun to shoot a rookie cop in the back.
    Both were cops who had gone to a very bad place and were trying to stay cops and become a better person, but beyond that they weren't very similar at all.

      I remember a reviewer commenting on the boldness of this show, that they spent a whole season on getting to know and care about John Kelly, and then he leaves.
      Mind, it was known at the time that it wasn't the producers' choice: David Caruso had only signed for the first season, and felt he had better opportunities elsewhere when it came time to renew. But for the first season it really seemed like he was the central character and everyone else was well-developed supporting cast, and having that rug yanked out from under you ... is why I started watching the first time around.
