My dad despised men claiming to have been in Nam. Even when he was a pastor. He called out a traveling minister who was speaking at my dad’s church. He did it right in the middle of the guy’s “sermon”. Kicked him out right on the spot; and then after apologizing to everyone, he called the other churches in town to give the pastors a heads up. This was in the mid 80’s. The majority of the town pastors were Korean and Nam vets. Not really the group to piss off.

When a person goes to war they don’t come back unscathed. Even if by some miracle they don’t get wounded physically, the trauma can leave a very powerful scar on the mind and the heart. Having Vietnam veterans in my family, I have a lot of sympathy for those guys. They fought an unpopular war, they came back and were treated as criminal essentially, and the worst part is that our government basically kicked them to the curb, and many of them never got to see any kind of financial help, or any other kind of assistance that they might be in need of, before they died.
Same thing goes for are WW2 vets as well, if there are any that are still alive, and if there are I haven't heard of any. From what I understand, they really didn't get anything at all, and a lot of it was because when they fought their War, things like post-traumatic stress disorder and whatnot were not recognized back then, and I also have a couple of WW2 vets in my family, who passed away 20 and 30 years ago.
The whole problem with the Vietnam era, was that while there was a lot of disagreement about the war, which I can understand if civilians do not agree with a war, but it was wrong for them to blame the soldier who was sent over there to fight.
The soldier who fought in Vietnam, whether he was drafted, or he signed up to go, just went and did his duty. Now admittedly there were some bad men who have fought in Vietnam, as with every other war that mankind has ever experienced; irrespective of what side they were on, but there have also been good men as well.
There have been bad men, good man, and even scared kids who were drawn into the war of their time, the latter who either didn't want any part of it, and/who didn't understand why they were fighting in such a thing.

Watching and reading about it it looked awful. Everyone should read "War is a racket". As soon as we get out of one conflict we are back in another. It doesn't matter how many soldiers and civilians have to be maimed or killed as long as the money keeps flowing

I've never understood this stolen valour thing. Most servicemen can tell in seconds if anybody's served or not. It's not the big stuff like country, Sqn, regiment or unit that give them away its the small stuff. In the UK all servicemen will remember their last three to their dying day having said that not sure about the Navy they're a strange lot.
In the early days of my service, "they were feeding us not needing us" and very rarely did you come across any "Walters"
Then Nothern Ireland, The Falklands and Gulf war 1 & 2 hove into view and boy did they come out the woodwork. Nowadays it doesn't bother me, not my circus, not my monkeys. Unless they start claiming they were on the balcony of a certain embassy, then I may casually ask them what was their last three.

Interesting take. I certainly agree but, of course, I wasn't there. I started college in 1974, after the US involvement had ended. There was a guy in my dorm who was older and kept telling stories about flying heliocopters, first in Vietnam, then Laos, etc. The stories got more lurid (and him more heroic, of course) as time went on. I have no idea if he was telling the truth or not, but if he wasn't, I would have wanted someone to do a Sipowicz on him. You don't lie about something like that.

The first guy I mentioned was wounded there, and did not believe what the other guy had to say. He would speak with me when I was alone, but he let me know he did not like the other guy or trust him. There was a Vietnamese guy we worked with, that was a good guy, and out of respect for him the first guy made a point of not speaking about the war.

In British military parlance, there are two types of people. 'Walt's' named after Walter Mitty, guys who lie and pretend they served in the Armed Forces but never did, and 'Bloaters'.......guys who DID serve in the Armed Forces in some capacity, but they exaggerate what they did during their service, they embellish to make themselves feel better. This guy in this scene DID serve, but embellished about what he did: Grade A Bloater!!

I feel like the one missed beat here is that Ray could suddenly have gotten very specific after Andy got demanding. Something like "257th Vehicle Maintenance Battalion. Couple miles west of Tan Son Nhut airfield." Make it clear even if he's a bullshitter and had an easier tour than Andy, it still affected him in similar ways. That way Andy can give his final lines at like a "5" intensity instead of an "8"; firm but not threatening.

Never try to bullshit a vet, no matter the war, it never ends well. Veterans (especially those of a combat variety) are one group of people you never want to push over the edge.

  • @happyninja42
    @happyninja42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Eh, I know this character was set up to be lying, but the fact that one of his flaws in his lie is "he didn't remember every single one of his duty stations" isn't really that accurate. I work with my state VA, and there are a LOT of veterans who don't remember details like that. And actively try and forget the years they were in the service. Especially if they had a lot of bad shit happen. Plenty do remember those details sure, but plenty don't.
I do like that Andy didn't look down on him for being in a maintenance unit while in 'Nam. He just accepts that like "ok yeah, plenty of people were there, not all of them had to fight. That's not their fault if they weren't in a fighting unit and were in support" So he just says "Then you tell them that." I do appreciate that bit. Especially since combat unit or not, everyone over there got hit with Agent Orange. So even if he never saw combat, he's been exposed to a nasty ass chemical, that will make him REALLY likely to get diagnosed with some nasty medical conditions later in life. The LEAST dangerous condition from AO exposure is a form of acne, that just statistically nobody ever seemed to have contracted. The next least deadly is prostate cancer. All the others, are not fun conditions, that will pretty much be guaranteed to be the thing that kills you later in life.

The politicians at the time didn't make that the goal, and Viet Nam was a disgrace from that perspective sir. Just my opinion. You're entitled to yours of course.
I respect anyone who's put on the uniform and served. You do so at the behest of the politicians who send you into harm's way. After Kennedy was assassinated, it was left to LBJ and Nixon. Their goals weren't the same as Kennedy's.

Well who the hell else would it be, the Girl Scouts?
