I always said Bobby Simone but John Kelly is a close second. Only thing is Kelly tended to overshadow Sipowicz a bit whereas Simone and Sipowicz were the perfect team.
This is the best cop show ever, the most realistic ever (I am a retired cop), and even though it is 25 years old, it is not dated in the least. Spectacular. The only difficult part for me is deciding which partner of Andy's did I like the most. Bobby Simone is right there at the top of the list, but John Kelly is right there too.
I've always been freaked out by this American "thank you for your service" thing. Is anybody asking why it's a dangerous job, or why people join it, or if it needs to be the way it is? Is a cop automatically good? I remember never hearing the term until they couldn't find chemical weapons in Iraq and people started turning against the war, then all of a sudden "support our troops" and "thank you for your service" started popping up everywhere all of a sudden. I understood that Vietnam vets got unfair treatment coming home but if that really mattered to people then they wouldn't be sleeping on the streets with extreme mental problems, and this latest batch of troops wouldn't be growing into the same situation. I've seen it with my own eyes. Young men got their heads permanently fucked up because they were given an opportunity to get revenge for 9/11 and then did not at all get what they signed up for. So I'm wondering if "thank you for your service" is really supposed to mean "What you're doing is ok by me". The "support our troops" terminology came up during the intro for a rodeo I attended and it felt like full blown brainwashing, I was there as a tourist during my first visit in the US and I looked around the crowd and everyone was fully bought into it. I don't think the idea was for people to support the troops. I think it was to support what they were doing. And what they were doing what somebody else's dirty work. Who would pay to advertise support our troops messages and then lowball veterans on medical bills? Anyway, that's why it weirds me out when I see the same reverence being used towards cops. Why all of a sudden is this now a thing
the blue hue around Bobby, makes him stand out. This scene just inspires me. The use of God's name. Bobby using Andy's name. Even with the knowledge that Bobby, Sylvia and Andy Jr. are dead, saying thier names.The direct affirmation that there is a God. The writers wrote a very powerful dialogue and just made the audience feel the Feels.
I love how Bobby has all the right short, quick, comforting answers. And it’s nice to see them throw faith in the mix. I don’t think they could do that today.
You make a great point. You wonder if Disney/ABC would approve of such a script today. So much has changed since the early and mid 90's; and not for the better. One of the most powerful scenes ever done on television in my opinion.
Bringing back a deceased character could've easily come across as corny or even campy, but this show nailed it and made the scene truly memorable, moving and emotional. I agree with you It could have been camp and corny But anytime they brought in the ghost of a dead character They always did it in a way that made you glad they did and made for some of the best moments in the history of primetime television

Right when Bobby Died was around the time I started watching every week. So Danny will always be my favorite partner of Andy. Loved Simone as well but not watching the show yet when Kelly was still on NYPD blue I'm not the biggest fan of Kelly if I'm honest.
You knew when you watched this show how absolutely great it was. Given the distance and time it has been gone from the airways you realize what a true phenomenon it was. The acting the imagery, the directing, the music, the subject matter and the cast where so pivotal in making this a stellar television series for the century. This is one of the examples of what television can be, and once was. Today with very few exceptions it is dismal and filled with such shallowness, well it's not worth even commenting any more when compared to an experience like NYPD Blues. Hat's off to all that had a hand in the making of such a fantastic piece of art.
So true. I was in high school when it aired, and this and ER were groundbreaking tv. The way they shot then shows was something the public never saw before. I watched ER for a few seasons, but rode out NYPD Blue until the end. Fantastic show
I watch this scene about once a week. It's one of the best scenes on television with how deep it went. Such an amazing job by both. Really gets to you how much they loved each other & how they miss each other. Absolutely beautiful & I tear up everytime I watch it. 😢
😭 I love bobby ~ I’ve been watching seasons 2 & 3 while recovering from the hospital. jimmy smits is great in everything ~ especially nypd blue. andy & bobby are great partners. bobby & diane are such a good couple.

This was my favorite scene, too. The scene where Bobby was dying and Patsy was guiding him into heaven is also great. When he tells him “Let me show you parents as they were when you best knew your father” it gets me every time since my parents are both gone.
@@pacman9425 I may be wrong here. But what I always took it to mean was that in heaven, his parents would be as they were when they were young and vibrant. Not as they were in failing health or old age. At least that’s how I would like to see my parents when that day comes.
An exquisite scene, beautifully realized. Smits must have relished his cameo return. The first five episodes of season 12 had Andy in a tailspin, crash and burn looming up. This visitation pulled him out of that nosedive. Great writing! And Ah! The doves cooing...
I just love NYPD Blue and this scene…I remember when it was on the 1st time. To see Bobby again took my breath away. It captures the love and loss we feel when we loose someone important in our lives. And yes I know that Bobby was only a character in a TV show, but I missed him for a long time. I think a lot of people did.
This one scene sums up the brilliance of this series and Andy’s character throughout. It shows the continuation of his character even though the series was coming to an end…brilliantly written and acted by two of the shows favorite characters. Anyone who followed this show and who is not moved to tears watching this scene has no soul. It’s amazing 🥲

Hands down the best 10 minutes of TV ever made. I saw this episode when it aired and sat with my ex and cried happy tears because Bobby truly was the best and when Andy says I miss you partner I completely broke.
Sipowicz and Simone: The real love story of this show. This seven-and-a-half-minute scene showcased the twelve years of history of this show beautifully. My favorite part was when Andy misunderstood Bobby and told him in so many words Connie and I are good with three kids before finding out Bobby was talking about not giving up on John. And in a way advising him, it was time for him to move on career-wise too. I need someone to reach out to the cast of NYPD Blue to do a reunion interview one of these days.
Not only could he have used Bobby great advice but John Kelly uplifted Andy when he was down in the beginning of the show. If only David Caruso returned in some fashion
#Bre Drew - Several years ago, I heard they were thinking of doing a NYPD Blue sequel. It was going to be centered around Theo becoming a NYPD detective & investigating Andy's murder. But I haven't heard of anything lately. Unfortunately, Austin Majors, who played Theo, just died recently. Not that they couldn't reboot it still but it's still sad. He was only 27.
When people ask "What's the meaning of life?" They should watch this scene. That's why we were born into this life; to choose a path; to help or to hinder, to build up people or tear them down. God sets before you the way of life or the way of death. Choose life. It isn't about religion, it's about relationship.
Sipowicz was clearly the best "Job" in the history of television. He experienced parental abuse and then the death of his partner, his son, and his wife. How on earth can one continue to move forward? Answer: He had two choices. He chose the one that involved continuing to live.
Dennis Franz was simply born to play this role (and credit to the writers for writing the character as well as they did). He does a great job of capturing the complexities and sometimes contradictions of Andy.
I just got done watching the entire series on HULU for the 1st time since it was on network ABC. Wow. It was still as powerful as I remember. It stood the test of time
Am I the only guy that tears up every time he see this scene? My dad always loved this show, (as did I) and the two of us used to watch it together every week when it was coming out. Damned if I don't feel like he is still sitting here with me when I watch it here on TH-cam or in reruns elsewhere. Yes, I love Bluebloods and the old Hill Street Blues, but NYPD Blue was on another level entirely with the cast and writing and connecting on a human level. What a gift to all of us. This and the West Wing are my two favourite series ever, and I struggle at times to split the two apart. Finding a scene equivalent to this in TWW is not too hard because there are so many great scenes, but one as emotion evoking as this: when President Bartlett gives charlie the family knife and says he is proud of him tears me up every time.
I believe this was the turning point for Andy, going from just being a detective, to determining himself to rise through the ranks and ultimately becoming Squad Commander.
I have binged this show with my dad and have grown to love it so much and when I got to this episode I couldn’t help but cry seeing jimmy smits again, one of the best shows ever made
A few years ago Iost my closest friend. His family used to call us brothers. I've had dreams about him that felt like this scene, and was able to, in the dream, touch him. It felt very real. Andy & Bobby were a true partnership of equals who complemented each other incredibly well vs Andy & Danny or Andy & Clark who were clearly jnr detectives Andy was training on the job.
Good points from both of you. Originally it was supposed to be centered on Caruso's character (which, quite frankly, would make for a much more run-of-the-mill tv series) but, when he opted out, the opportunity to focus on the evolution of Andy's character was just what made it one of the best tv shows ever.

Clark was a young kid that didn’t know how to deal with grief. This scene is exquisite.

Andy & Bobby were a true partnership of equals who complemented each other incredibly well vs Andy & Danny or Andy & Clark who were clearly jnr detectives Andy was training on the job.

Good points from both of you. Originally it was supposed to be centered on Caruso's character (which, quite frankly, would make for a much more run-of-the-mill tv series) but, when he opted out, the opportunity to focus on the evolution of Andy's character was just what made it one of the best tv shows ever.
