  • Here’s a great way to free up a stuck thumb joint if you’ve got thumb arthritis.
    Be sure to get a good pull and wiggle from the wrist rather than the whole arm.
    Don’t do this if it hurts! It should make your thumb joints feel good!

    I have pain with the higher up joints on the thumb, the actual knuckle joint and the one below it. Would love a video on how to reduce pain in those areas!

      Hey Caroline, the same methods can apply to each joint of the thumb. The general idea is to get each joint moving effectively and often. It is also important to develop the muscles within the hand itself to better support the joints. Often times, people will overuse the muscles that are in the forearm and not use the muscles in the hand enough. Hope this helps!

    That area of mine clunks, and no matter the amount of pressure, I have discomfort. Got quoted $8500 for stem cell injections for chronic pain. I delined.

    Thank you so much for this video! I had excruciating pain few days ago and did research on google and discovered I may have thumb arthritis. After doing the exercises you demonstrated on this video, I’m shocked how much it helped me! Next day no pain so anytime I feel the pain coming back I do that and exactly- thank you so much 😊

    Thank you! I have so much pain in my CMC joint in both hands, now even at rest they throb. I have a busy job, I have problems writing or holding anything. And I travel for work, requiring hours behind the wheel, which also seems to aggravate the pain. This was really helpful!

    My thumb joint was pain free after the first time I did the exercise. I'll keep it up. Also, I just ordered the hand grip/squeeze tool you recommended in an earlier video and plan to start that exercise as soon as it arrives. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos.

    It hurts mega and pulled out of the socket- it was agonizing until I moved it around and got it back in the socket. I certainly would never do that again-

    My knuckle closest to my nail has been locking w/serious pain where you showed us to pull. It feels a little better after 1st session. Thank you so much❣️

      How are you getting on now? The same has happened to me over the last few weeks. I have got ibuprofen gel which helps slightly. I’m terrified it creeps into my other fingers

      I have the same issue. When I am able to bend it, the knuckle jars and it hurts. I wake up several times through the night in excruciating pain. I can’t bend it…putting any kind of pressure on it. I don’t know what to do with it. My nurse practitioner says it’s caused from the C joints in the neck but I 100% disagree. Please advise.

    I’ve have severe pain in the proximal joint space towards the medial joint space along the extensor tendon/sheath. I don’t believe it’s tenosynovitis but, it’s possible. I’m going to try these (along with ice and immobilization) and hopefully this will have a positive impact. Thank you for your videos.

    Thanks dude! The pain was enabling me to do my karate classes. One day, while conditioning my body I felt a pain in my thumb, I researched and found out I had thumb arthritis. Now I found this vid to relieve my pain 😎

    A few years ago a therapist told me to massage the tendon on the top side of my forearm to stretch it out and it takes my thumb pain right away. I can see how this stretches the tendon somewhat too. I tried this and it helped a little but not as quickly as rubbing and stretching the arm tendon.

    Oh it does hurt some doing that (inflamed) but it feels better after. I have big toe arthritis too. Hope you have a suggestion for that.

    Thank you! I have been suffering from thumb pain from some unknown cause for several weeks and your release technique seems to have fixed it in just one repetition of this exercise. Perhaps I was some kind of an alignment issue? Not sure. But mobilizing the joint helped fix the issue! Thank you!

    They say i am end stage and need surgery on thumb. But i see videos on that and it is brutal with months of pain and immobility. No ! This may do it for me. Thank you!

      If you haven't already tried it, try rubbing castor oil on the painful joints. I have had arthritis (rheumatoid and osteo) for over 25 years and been on all kinds of drugs, I tried castor oil on my hands last week and I was shocked at how much it helped.

    Since I have this condition on both thumbs, I 'm reasonably sure that years of weight training is the main cause of this issue.

    Wow! great exercise to know. i just started HANGING at home on GYM BAR for decompression of spine. My hands beginning to hurt now. (4th day). 6 yrs ago, I was told i have arthritis in hand/fingers when i fell and suffered hand pain at work . Eventually it went away on its own. The hanging- pain i am feeling NOW (i think?) is just REGULAR soreness that " old people get" when they first start trying to HANG with no natural PADDING left in palms of hands. 🤪 It feels now like just boney hands hanging on a bar.😂 Aging is hell! LO L Guess I just have to toughen up again in life! I refuse to let this stop me from learning to HANG.😃 Just need to slower my pace. I guess? What say you Dr. David??

      A 70 year old hanger here. Try gloves, they can be much more comfortable.. or you can wrap the bar like they do bicycle handlebars.

    I had no pain in thumb until someone hit it and hyper extended it once. It ended up painful for weeks. Then it got better. Then it happened again recently my grand daughter hit it. It’s weak and moving my pointer finger causes pain in the thumb joint near wrist

    El Paso awesome I'man hour away....hiya neighbor....I tried this on my thumb....feels a little wobbly now but better....i think i may have fractured it or something years ago....anyhoo....any advice on severe right side lower back/hip pain....a few years ago my husband and I were doing some stretching and i heard a pop....about a few months later in the fall it started to hurt....or well at least was sore during the winter or just at random times....would this be best for a chiropractor to see....I cannot have surgery....nor do i want anyways....but just asking....thanks in advanced....in case....you do take referrals?

    Hi! I did this on my "not so bad" hand. The cmc joint was grinding/scraping & something kind of clunked almost audibly like up & over something. It did not feel good. Is this exercise contraindicated for some people? Thanks!

    question: would a person that has been playing woodwinds instruments (saxophone,flute,etc)most of their life be more susceptible to thumb,wrist and hand pain due to an increased arthritis due to over use of finger,wrist and hand joints?
