    I’ve had pain in my lower thumb for many weeks after landing badly on my hand. I came across your video.. and I didn’t have a tennis ball to hand m, but I pressed the fatty part of my palm onto a the ball of a back massager I had - and the pain is almost gone after one try! I hope it gets 100% better. Thank you!

    Thanks! Holding a 200 gm smartphone for 2 hours watching a movie, and after few months I have this pain at the base of my left thumb! Earlier phones were lighter with 3-4G. The 5 g phones with 4000 or larger mAh batteries caused this new problem!

    Thanks, @Dr. Yoni Whitten! As both a licensed massage therapist, a performing musician (drummer) and master craftsman, aches and pains in my MCP and CMC joints are causes for both concern and, occasionally, a good deal of anxiety. (As such, these exercises and taping instructions are especially helpful tonight, when one of my MCPs is recovering from yesterday’s busy MT schedule) Again, thanks!!!

    I couldn’t imagine how these exercises would help my thumb and wrist pain with arthritis. But using the tennis ball and doing the stretches over 1 week has made a very noticeable improvement. So today I’m trying the Rock tape. I’m very grateful for anything to help because I’ve had a noticeable worsening of hand pain due to osteoarthritis in the past year. Thank you for making this video.

    Very helpful, thank you! Easy to follow instructions. I have used Rock Tape on my knees off and on for a long time, with a great deal of pain control, so will definitely try the "drumstick" method. Glad to have found your videos.

    I have just come across your video and i'm pleased that i have. I have Osteoarthritis over many parts of my body and i take a lot of medication for it, however it doesn't seem to help at all with both of my thumb joints and a specialist is now talking about removing the thumb joints but said that i will still have pain! Nobody has ever mentioned exercises or taping of either my thumb and wrist joints. I am definitely ready to give this a go as it is so debilitating to have chronic pain especially in your hands.     Came across your video; very interesting and helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will try these suggestions.. I've had left thumb pain for months..although pain is localized to base of where thumb and index finger meet, anterior aspect of the hand...hopefully these methods will improve things.

    Dang. The tennis ball trick is AMAZING. I used a smaller rubber ball, because I have small hands, but same effect it seems. I have advanced basal osteoarthritis in both thumbs. Thanks doc!

    Hello there, I am here to testify, lol. My pain was severe. Last night, I watched your tips and used the tape one. It's not the same tape as yours, but this morning, the pain subdued to 80 percent. Eventually, I will need surgery, but I hope people do these 3 tips. I will work today with the ball. Thanks! Oh, I was skeptical because I could not touch it the area. It was so painful.

    Thank you so much for all your detailed information. I just started having severe pain in my tight thumb about 2 weeks ago. I have tried a tens unit that seems to make the pain worse and more intense. I also tried Lidocaine patches....not helpful at all. I will try your exercise next and rock tape. Will keep you posted.     Thank you for the recommendations, I will try it. For those living in Romania, I can recommend the Depanten gel. I used it, and my bump on the leg decreased. It has a pleasant cooling effect.

    Ouch!!! Just started the tennis ball excercise and the slightest pressure causes considerable pain. Might feel a little better after, but hard to tell. Tape is on the way.

    This is a great post. I have what the orthopedic doc called CMC Arlthritis, a very common location of arthritis. I'm a retired orchestra teacher and I think the pinching of my right hand, tuning thousands of violins was the nail in my coffin! My primary care doc called it tendinitis and prescribed motrin. Ugh. A year later an orthopedic triage doc took an xray and immediately diagnosed it as CMC arthritis. He gave me a steroid injection. The pain relief lasted about 2 weeks. I've not had another injection. I purchased a "push" brace which amazingly helps the pain by keeping the joint in tight. I'm a pianist and can play even while wearing the brace. But, I'm thinking it's only delaying the inevitable- surgery where they remove the trapezius bone. That option honestly scares me. This video presents the idea of adjusting the shape of the palm by stretching the muscles and flattening the palm. I've performed the first two exercises on this video for 2 days and already am sensing some relief. I have 2 questions: 1. Is it possible that the pain is mostly from my palm changing it's shape, and if I can return the shape to it's original flat shape, the pain will subside? 2. I haven't tried the third idea in this video, that of taping the joint as you've demonstrated. Will that serve my joint as my "Push" brace and relieve even more pain? Thanks so much.

      I'm so glad you're getting some relief for this!
      Unfortunately, without a physical examination, I am not able to say what is causing/ contributing to your pain. Properly applied Rock Tape can help increase stability around a joint and provide some pain relief too - It's a really useful strategy.

      My mother is near to 70 age. She have a pain in thumb lower side due to fell down. Doctor suggested her to wear thumb splint. My mother tried it yesterday. But I think her vains are so weak that couldn't bear tightness and thumb turned into blue. Means blood circulation due to tightness was not working properly. And doctor advised her that her thumb should be straight every time. What to do. Please suggest

      @@painfixprotocol in this case DMSO should be used as super solvent /Delivery agent/ ... it should be mixed with something else . Possible with Cortisone.

    Thank you Doc! I have bad pain in the right thumb joint near the wrist, but it is closer to the inside of the fatty part of the hand. It is always sharp as hell and gets very restrictive with what I can do. Thumb braces don't seem to help. Adduction is hard to do and often causes it to happen in the first place. I never thought of using the tape. I think I'll try that. Thank you for your video! I do try to abduct it the best way I can with my other hand but it gets tricky to do. I think those exercises can help, too. But it is quite a lot of pain.

    Thank you for these recommendations. I do have CMC joint pain in both hands with dx osteoarthritis and bone spurs. I did get a steroid injection that failed. I do wear a brace. I have been referred to a hand surgeon. I work as a cashier. My pain didn't really start until I started this position. With that all said, I tried the exercises you suggested. This made the pain worse after the first attempt. Is this normal? Should I continue doing the exercises?

    Hi, I have pain in both areas of the thumb. I also have "squaring" on my right hand so it's progressed pretty far. Can this 3 stage plan help someone who is in the advanced stages? I'm going to buy some rock tape today and try the first, easier taping strategy on my hand. You do a really good job of explaining how to do everything!!

      Yes. The exercises can be performed with tape applied. The exercises are typically performed 1-2 times per day.

    Super helpful! I am going for a world record in a form of push-ups so I will be using this. Is it beneficial to apply both strapping methods at once? I am experiencing a little tension in both areas.

      I completely understand your concern, Barbara.
      The good news is that baby oil can be used to rapidly dissolve the adhesive. So, when you're ready to remove the tape cover the application in baby oil and let it stay saturated for 10-15 minutes - then the tape comes off almost effortlessly.

    I watched the interesting video.
    I am 64+ Years age. About 4 months back I started feeling pain in lower part of thumbs of both my hands during opening or closing of bottle cover by rotation. Even during putting eye drops when I press little tiny plastic bottle by my thumb and my forefinger, I feel pain at root of my thumb.
    I had also started feeling pain below inner ankles of both of my feet around same time about 4 months back.
    I had started watching your video primarily for thumb. But mentioned ankles problem also for wider perspective.
    Will these exercises be helpful
    Or
    Do I need to see any other video also, of yours in addition to this video?

    I like these exercises, they help me alot! I have a question. The reason for these exercises is to push the muscle from lower thumb outwards to prevent it from pushing inwards. The two thumb braces that I have tried pushes the hand along with the thumb muscle inwards. Are these braces not good?

    Great video, thank you. Ive tried all the three tests and seems fine. However when i try to do a push up the pain is triggered in my cmc joint. the wall test is fine. So really dont know whats wrong

    I have pain in both spots that you showed. Should I alternate a couple of days to one spot and a couple to the other?
    Furthermore, I'm a movement instructor, so I move quite a bit and don't have any restrictions in mobility, just pain... Should I check anything else?
    Finally, do you have tips to address the root cause of the pain (a lot of the times at the shoulder girdle/ upper spine)?

      You're very welcome, Galit! Rather then alternating back and forth, I tend to focus on 1 area exclusively for a period of time. Only when that area is under control will I branch out to a second area.

      I think I could be working Doing it consistently and sure hurts less today than when I started. I really like the taping and had just gotten Rocktape I would recommend the h2O2 to stay on with all activities. Do u actually think it could completely reverse??
