I’ve had pain in my lower thumb for many weeks after landing badly on my hand. I came across your video.. and I didn’t have a tennis ball to hand m, but I pressed the fatty part of my palm onto a the ball of a back massager I had - and the pain is almost gone after one try! I hope it gets 100% better. Thank you!
You're most welcome! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for all your detailed information. I just started having severe pain in my tight thumb about 2 weeks ago. I have tried a tens unit that seems to make the pain worse and more intense. I also tried Lidocaine patches....not helpful at all. I will try your exercise next and rock tape. Will keep you posted. Thank you!
I hope the information in this video is helpful for you, Jacquelyn!
Thanks you very I will try
Most welcome 😊
I have just come across your video and i'm pleased that i have. I have Osteoarthritis over many parts of my body and i take a lot of medication for it, however it doesn't seem to help at all with both of my thumb joints and a specialist is now talking about removing the thumb joints but said that i will still have pain! Nobody has ever mentioned exercises or taping of either my thumb and wrist joints. I am definitely ready to give this a go as it is so debilitating to have chronic pain especially in your hands. Thank you so much for the information and i will come back to you to let you know if it helped. Shirley from the UK.
Cheers, Shirley! I really hope the information in this video can help you to feel & function better!
Thanks, @Dr. Yoni Whitten! As both a licensed massage therapist, a performing musician (drummer) and master craftsman, aches and pains in my MCP and CMC joints are causes for both concern and, occasionally, a good deal of anxiety. (As such, these exercises and taping instructions are especially helpful tonight, when one of my MCPs is recovering from yesterday’s busy MT schedule) Again, thanks!!!
You're most welcome! I'm glad it was helpful for you.
😊
Very helpful, thank you! Easy to follow instructions. I have used Rock Tape on my knees off and on for a long time, with a great deal of pain control, so will definitely try the "drumstick" method. Glad to have found your videos.
Welcome to the community, mtngrammy!
Thanks a lot for this advice! And your smile is charming!
You're most welcome, Inna! And thank you!

Glad it was helpful, Irma!
Thank you, Yoni!
As always, I greatly appreciate your thorough explanations.
I have pain in both spots that you showed. Should I alternate a couple of days to one spot and a couple to the other?
Furthermore, I'm a movement instructor, so I move quite a bit and don't have any restrictions in mobility, just pain... Should I check anything else?
Finally, do you have tips to address the root cause of the pain (a lot of the times at the shoulder girdle/ upper spine)?
You're very welcome, Galit! Rather then alternating back and forth, I tend to focus on 1 area exclusively for a period of time. Only when that area is under control will I branch out to a second area.

Ouch!!! Just started the tennis ball excercise and the slightest pressure causes considerable pain. Might feel a little better after, but hard to tell. Tape is on the way.
A softer ball may be a better option for you.
Thanks
You're most welcome, Chrystal!
Thank you Doc! I have bad pain in the right thumb joint near the wrist, but it is closer to the inside of the fatty part of the hand. It is always sharp as hell and gets very restrictive with what I can do. Thumb braces don't seem to help. Adduction is hard to do and often causes it to happen in the first place. I never thought of using the tape. I think I'll try that. Thank you for your video! I do try to abduct it the best way I can with my other hand but it gets tricky to do. I think those exercises can help, too. But it is quite a lot of pain.
You're welcome! I hope the information can help you to move easier & with less pain.
🙏need to do this🙏
I hope you find it helpful!
Hi, I have pain in both areas of the thumb. I also have "squaring" on my right hand so it's progressed pretty far. Can this 3 stage plan help someone who is in the advanced stages? I'm going to buy some rock tape today and try the first, easier taping strategy on my hand. You do a really good job of explaining how to do everything!!
Thanks for your kind words! Without an examination, it would be difficult to provide an accurate prognosis. However, almost everyone can improve their situation with a few simple daily practices performed consistently over time.
Thank you so much for this information. Both of my thumb joints hurt seriously. Can I put both strips of tape on at the same time?
You're welcome, Kathy! Absolutely, both strips can be worn at the same time.
Great video! Can you do both tape areas at the same time?
Thank you! Yes, absolutely both areas can be taped at the same time.
I was so happy to come across your video.
Two questions… How often do you do the tennis ball and wall exercises? And I am assuming you can perform these two exercises while the thumb is taped, correct?
Yes. The exercises can be performed with tape applied. The exercises are typically performed 1-2 times per day.
I bought some Rock Tape, but it is in the form of a roll of tape, versus smaller patches like you asked in this video.
I am in need of correcting my thumb position as it is not possible now for me to straighten out my thumb due to the osteoarthritis....years of gripping and pulling with dental instruments is the main contributor to this problem. How can I get the smaller pieces of tape as you demonstrated with in the video?
Hi Gail, Sorry I should have explained that the Rock Tape will come in a roll and it's up to the individual to cut it to the right size for their application (and body size). Once you have a good pair of scissors and practice a little it ends up being much better this way b/c the roll lasts a lot longer than the pre-cut strips (which never seem to be the right length).
Super helpful! I am going for a world record in a form of push-ups so I will be using this. Is it beneficial to apply both strapping methods at once? I am experiencing a little tension in both areas.
Thanks, Nash! You can absolutely use both taping strategies at the same time. Best of luck with your world record attempt!
Thanks I will try this as I have these symptoms...but also I think I've torn the tendon or ligaments under the base of the thumb nail Its a sharp kind of pain ,I play alot of video games with a controller and sometimes get a bit aggressive with movement .I took my sneaker off about a month ago with a weird grip and felt it tear .just wondering if I can tape that also somehow ,I did try with a thin peuce of tape while thumb was bent and put a bit of tension on it I just dont know if im doing it right...or weather it could be a more serious tendon tear that might need surgery or steroid injections ,any tips would be greatly appreciated thanks
Wow - It would take quite a lot to tear a ligament or tendon while removing your own shoe!
The first step here would be to see a qualified practitioner in your area and get an accurate diagnosis. Once you know what the problem is, you will know how to treat it.
I watched the interesting video.
I am 64+ Years age. About 4 months back I started feeling pain in lower part of thumbs of both my hands during opening or closing of bottle cover by rotation. Even during putting eye drops when I press little tiny plastic bottle by my thumb and my forefinger, I feel pain at root of my thumb.
I had also started feeling pain below inner ankles of both of my feet around same time about 4 months back.
I had started watching your video primarily for thumb. But mentioned ankles problem also for wider perspective.
Will these exercises be helpful
Or
Do I need to see any other video also, of yours in addition to this video?
The strategies here could be very helpful for you. However, the 4 month time frame is what stands out here. I would be very interested in what happened or what changed ~ 4 months ago.
Well, this was a great video! I'm too lazy to do any taping. I'm old and stubborn so I will simply continue to do construction work, play drums and rub my sore MFJ :)
I will however stretch it out.
I'm glad you were able to take something away from this video. I think you'll find the stretching technique to be quite a bit more effective than rubbing the sore joint.
Difficile douleur à plier la dernière portion( près de l’ongle ) de mon pouce
I like these exercises, they help me alot! I have a question. The reason for these exercises is to push the muscle from lower thumb outwards to prevent it from pushing inwards. The two thumb braces that I have tried pushes the hand along with the thumb muscle inwards. Are these braces not good?
So glad this video was helpful for you, Jason! There are situations where a brace like that may be helpful and appropriate. But the ultimate goal should be restore normal structure & function.
Makes sense, thank you!@@painfixprotocol
This is good for my husband. He stays on the computer a lot and complains about his hand hurting.
I hope it's helpful him!
This really works
So glad it helps you! Cheers, Fatime!
Between texting and guitar my thumb fatigues fast. I love to play guitar. What should I do? Hear or ice? Sorry I’m going to finish the video. Thanks!
The strategies in this video will do much more for you than ice or heat ever could. Here's another video with some important hand-related information: th-cam.com/video/h8bUdYfA-nc/w-d-xo.html
Can you do both tapings at the same time? Layering?
Yes, absolutely. Both tape applications can be used simultaneously.
How is rock tape different than kinesio tape? I have pain in both areas, would you apply the tape at two different times or both at the same time? Also mine tends to be neuropathic pain and I drop things all the time because I can't hold on to them.
Good question. They are both kinesiology tape, they cost the same but Rock Tape is more flexible and stays on much longer - more bang for your buck. Taping multiple locations at the same time is just fine. Hope it helps!
Thank you my friend I am the typical 60 year old guy who always played through pain and my hands been bothering me for about five years now because I work at a desk all day so when I get home I do a lot of woodworking and it’s all hand work and my thumb just hurt all the time and I’ve just got used to it and then I thought I bet there’s some bright young people out there who have figured out how to fix this and so I saw your video in another gentleman between the two of your videos are you both had some great ideas I especially love the tennis ball idea I’ve tried that myself actually I use my fist put my thumb on my fist and push down and wow that is some fun pain I Telya but it does loosen it up but I especially like the stretches on the tape idea do you recommend ice at all?
I'm glad this was helpful for you, Mr. Koolio! I almost never use ice - and instead use light therapy which has many of the same benefits of ice, with none of the downside. Here's a video where I go into that - th-cam.com/video/QOF5oqZsY04/w-d-xo.html
Again Wow! After trying the first tape job at noon, by 9 pm that second area started aching, burning. I just put the second demo to work on my thumb. The first area still has pain so I assume I just got back and forth with taping?
Taping is not typically a stand-alone strategy. It's one layer of a rehab program that can make people more comfortable and help accelerate recovery from physical medicine.
So I have had pain In my right thumb in the spot you mentioned (closer to the wrist). This has not been gradual though. I injured my thumb a few months ago. I assumed I broke it and I didn’t get an X-ray or anything. I’ve broke a lot of fingers in my life. But this pain never went away. It hurts to try to spread my fingers out as much as possible and it hurts randomly when I do activities. Some simple like putting on tight gloves. Some more random movements I can’t replicate. It almost feels like something is catching inside my thumb then releasing. I’m not sure what it is but I don’t think arthritis is caused by an injury is it?
Sorry to hear of your injury, Evan. Tissue injury can absolutely lead to arthritic changes / joint degeneration. I would suggest getting a thorough examination from a qualified practitioner in your area. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I am having the same pain past some days bottom part of my pain
Sorry to hear that. I hope the information in this video is helpful.
Wow! I can't believe the tennis ball exercise! My thumb muscle is so incredibly sore! I never really noticed that . I can't help but think this is going start to relieve that area of my thumb. I've had two rounds of cortisone shots and they are no longer working. I've got the rock tape on now. I'm a professional upright bassist. You can see me perform right here on my page. I'm going to keep doing all three of the procedures (exercises) that you suggest. Thank you!!!
WOW! You're a very talented musician! I hope this video helps get your thumbs feeling & working much better!
❤ hi I have a pain on my on my fingering and fingering pinky finger going down to wrist I went to emergency and they told me that it is Carpal tunnel they just gave me splint and drink Tylenol but t up to now it's painful
Sorry to hear about your pain, Remy. Carpal tunnel doesn't typically affect the pinky side of the hand. So, I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion and an accurate diagnosis.
i injured my left thumb 6 weeks ago and it still hurts i was pumping out dry cement and the hose kicked back and hit my thumb and it punched it hard the pain has been mild but today it hurts so bad that my head hurts also i think i re irritated it two days ago i had to empty out a cement hose that was clogged and it was very heavy which i used both hands to do the job, maybe there is some internal injury. It does feel hot to the touch and it looks swollen. It's been hot to the touch and swollen now for 6 weeks i thought it would have healed by now. not sure what to do for it. I think it needs ICE i do have Biofreeze but i don't know where i put it.
Good question! If it's been hot, swollen and that painful for 6 weeks you should definitely have it looked at by a qualified practitioner in your area ASAP. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
@@painfixprotocol Thank You! i had my chiropractor look at in this past Monday and he pulled on it a few times i heard it crack. He did the same to my other thumb. Today it is still warm or hot vs the other thumb not warm and not hot. I am 57 so maybe things take longer to heal now i don't know.
I have pain in those spots...i am diagnosed with de Quervains on both hands. Is this tapeing good for this and if both areas hurt...which tapeing should i use? I so wanna try.

Yes, Bonnie! You can absolutely use both applications at the same time. So glad the 1st technique is helping you!
Hi, I am somewhat confused, perhaps someone can advise me concerning the following. Having looked at this video on pain relief, for the arthritis at the base of the thumb. I suffer this problem in both hands. Now the presenter of this video said that he would leave the description for the Rock tape, “down in the description.” I have often heard this phrase where more details will be down in the description. I am using an iPad and I have never been able to find this “down there in the description” place. Can someone advise me how to get there. Thanks

Can have the tape on while you do the exercises?
Absolutely, seeview06! Rock Tape is breathable and highly flexible so it's very easy to wear during exercise.
Yes, mine was serious and I had tendon replacement surgery. Too bad the surgeon botched it.
Sorry to hear that your surgery was unsuccessful. Is revision a possibility?
@painfixprotocol The success rate is very low for a trapezial implant, the surgeon that did it told me it was all in my head and that I just didn't want to go back to work, I had to travel outside my city to even have a proper diagnosis. The problem was the surgeon took away too much tendon.

Hi Doctor
I'm from the Philippines.
My right thumb was in pain for 3 months and I cannot straighten my thumb. When I forced my thumb to straighten it sounded crackling . I am 61 now . I am having a hard time writing , opening the door knob. Is there a medication for this? Thank you
The first step would be to see a qualified practitioner in your area and get an accurate diagnosis. Once you have that information, you can come up with a treatment plan - which might include medication.
I have no cartilage left in the BL CMC joints and a bone spur on the right hand. I take Meloxicam daily but it is not working well. They are suggesting surgery. Not sure the exercises will help.
Sorry to hear that! I know how painful bone spurs can be. Best of luck with your recovery!
What does it mean when it's very painful when I use ball on cmc joint
That could mean a lot of things. A full medical history and exam would be needed to determine the precise cause.
Can you get the tape wet?. How long doyou wear the tape.. 24 hours or only a portion of the day?
When applied properly, Rock Tape can stay on for 3-4 days. It can get wet but the more often that happens the weaker the application tends to become.
So how long do you have to tape it for please?
A good tape application can stay on for 3-5 days.
i have pain in the left hand thumb knuckle and also at the base of the thumb at the bone...what should i do?
Have you given any of the techniques in this video a shot?
@@painfixprotocol yes, but its not addressed my issue😔😢
any thoughts of dupuytren on the hand
Dupuytren's contracture is an extremely difficult condition to work with. Unfortunately, there aren't any proven ways to prevent Dupuytren's disease or limit its progress. There has been some interest on an injectable enzyme called Xiaflex that breaks down collagen, but information is limited: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22384021/
WHAT ABOUT BONE-ON-BONE INFLAMITORY PAIN IN THE THUMB AREA?

Is the tape bought in a roll only? I presume if so you just cut to shape for thumbs?
That's exactly right. There are so many different applications for Rock Tape, the best thing is to buy the roll and trim to the shape and size you need.
Thank you 👍
Where can you get the tape. Is it special tape
Yes, it's a specific kind of tape. Here's the link: amzn.to/3V3ayBJ
When you try to press down on the tennis ball should it be excruciatingly painful? It’s so much so I got nauseous.
No, it should absolutely not be painful. In a case like that, I would typically have a person use a much softer ball. Or use a lot less pressure with the tennis ball.
Where to find rock tape? I am in Canada.
Rock Tape is available on Canadian Amazon: www.amazon.ca/RockTape-81678614-Black-16-4-5cmx5m/dp/B07BKLY4DZ/ref=sr_1_8?crid=2BE8IQ9CKBJ21&keywords=rock+tape&qid=1706027238&sprefix=rock+tape%2Caps%2C264&sr=8-8
How long would you need to wear the tape
It depends. But typically, I will continue using tape until normal functionality has been restored.
What about pain and swelling on the thumb?
Good question, Dina. Treatment will depend on the source of that pain & swelling and whether it's acute or chronic.
Any advice for dequervain tendonitis
I haven't done a video on DeQuervain's yet. But there's some interesting research on conservative treatment methods like this one - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32148092/

r it's too long Dr Yoni Whitten because i have no time too musch...can you suggest to me a cure thumb pain ? Dexamethasone ?🙏
Sorry to hear about your challenges. The cure for thumb pain will differ depending on the issue or issues that are causing the pain. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that may help reduce pain and inflammation. However, as with all drugs, the risk to benefit ration must be assessed for the individual in question.

Overworked? Is it always Necessarily arthritis? Is there a test?
Good question. No, it's not necessarily arthritis. In the early stages, it could be chronic strain/sprain injury which can create a chronic inflammatory response unless appropriate rest from the offending activities is taken and rehabilitation is pursed.
