loving the idea of trying both methods of rearing the fry! seperate tank designed for the fry, alongside parents breeding tank designed to also rear fry.
Ive got something similar going with my endler hybrids, though mostly just for my own learning as i want to see how the fry grow in a community setting with a small amount of predation on the very smallest fry, vs a fry only tank, so that i can see how they develop on their own (plus one little babny honey gourami, the fry tank was previously for my honeys but got damn those fry are sensitive)

Nice one congratz. It looks like I have 2 males and they are both paired now. Just need to get something for them to go into that the eggs will be hidden and get lost in. They both have a cave each and the plants hide the puffers but no good for the eggs. I'll let you know if I can get moss to grow enough to do the job as yours has.

Hey mark !! Hope all is well and I loved this video !!
I watched this maybe 18 months ago before I brought my first set of pea puffers home. I got 4 in a heavily planted 30 gallon, 2 males 2 females, and they have been living great for about 12 months now !
However I had a scary incident this morning. I looked at the tank early morning, before my tank lights even came on and saw a puffer spiraling up and down the tank. Upon closer inspection my male puffer had my females puffer face in his mouth and she PUFFED UP !! I smacked the tank hard out of just pure shock and they peeled off each other. No major injuries but my female was visibly distressed.
To summarize, I was curious if I should maybe consider a rehome for one ? Or if a rescape will help ? Or if this just a natural part of there lives ? Thank you and sorry for this lengthy convo

Do the Pea parents or other pea puffers in the tank eat the eggs/fry?
I'm asking bc I have a pea puffer tank that has lots of plants, driftwood and stone, that they can hide in, so I've never got the chance to see any eggs or the female spawning, however I have seen the mating behavior with them.
Thanks for documenting this! I am looking all over for a close up of the spawning activity for these lil ones, but like you said, no one has really recorded it.

Hi mark really interested In your videos! I own 2 males to 6 females they have been doing alot of breeding behaviour.. was just wondering if i am best removing the eggs or to keep them in the tank till I start to see fry ? My tank is heavily planted lots of pebbles where they breed and lots of java moss around the pebbles. Are the eggs like small white specs? Looks like dandruff..

I ran out many months ago after first seeing your video series and got 8 pea puffers. I gave them lots of rocks and plants, with java moss and hornwart, mostly. But still no babies. Can you help? What do the eggs look like? Can you actually see the eggs or do you randomly vac around behind the plants and rocks to find them. The puffers and the snails they eat are the only inhabitants in the tank. The temp is kept within a degree or two above or below 80F.

Here in Australia pea puffers sell for $140-210 USD each (as it’s illegal to import them, they’re all domestically bred by hobbyists from old stock brought into the country before the import ban, hence their scarcity and price). This would be a great little money maker, hmmm.

Ohhh I ave sphagnum moss I got from garden centre, it’s just that dead looking beige stuff, can I place that in tank to..or does it have additives that could be nasty? So many questions I have

Mark, I left a message ‘ post on your forum page but realised you prob won’t read it there. Long story short one of my pea pairs have/are spawning in moss, in glosso, in a miss tree too...I witnessed him snuggle her n quiver then sit still a bit then shake away. That was Wednesday 17th June...is it 48 hours or 4 to 5 days to hatch? Plus how can I remove eggs “if” she did expel any as I’d not be able to find the eggs amongst the moss n plants, it’s a fairly planted tank, I did that for them to have hides spots n feel safe . Should I send another message vie pm thru ur actual fb page....will you help me out n give advice ..please.
I usually breed CPDs which I learnt from YOU but I’m a lil put off at, as my recent batch or 80 to 90 juvies didn’t go well, some illness and I lost about 40 odd fish...very hard as that a lil earnings for me being unfortunately unemployed atm and with injuries but moreso very sad for the fish and hard figuring out how to save them. They were all sold just waiting for them to grow large enough to hand over to buyers but that won’t be happening now.
I’m Lisa Saxon on fb on your forum page and your aquatics page.
I, so hoping this spawning was “actual “spawning n not practicing. They’ve been at it again today also but I just haven’t visually seen an egg release.
Thanks Mark..your the best dude on here x

5:30 - Fish have a ton of fry at once for a reason; they're not like people, they don't have one baby that gets all the care, in the wild many (even all?) might die, so seeing casualties in the tank or having mom and dad eat a couple, there's not much that can be done.
