Turn A Gundam: Cruel Tomino's Thesis (For ALL Gundam) | Turn A Gundam Exploration

  • TURN A GUNDAM, the eighth installment in the Gundam franchise, was created for the Gundam Big Bang 20th Anniversary celebration... but more importantly it marked the triumphant return of Tomino. Set in the year Correct Century 2345, this series tells the saga of the war between the Moonrace who wish to reestablish on Earth, and the Earth Militia forces, which use the ancient Turn A Gundam to stop them.
    So my friends, I'm Absa, and in this video I'll try to explore why I believe that Turn A Gundam (For All Gundam) can also be interpreted as Tomino's manifesto that Gundam started with him and will end with him.

    Love Turn A from start to finish.
    I feel like too many are hung up by dark history, but the key point really is about how war and conflicts will always repeat themselves, no matter which universe and where.
    Turn A ending is one of those rare hopeful one that actually felt like a great conclusion to all gundam series there is. Perhaps turn A gundam is the good ending timeline.

    Turn A Gundam is very much THE magnum opus of Gundam, the literal final boss of the franchise. Not to mention major Xenogears vibes from that show, especially the setting, storytelling, and world building.

    In 2004 Tomino-San was in Brazil for an event, and he clearly stated that he was very curious about how other cultures and perspectives would reflect on his creation, taking it to new directions and expanding the Gundam universe with fresh doses of creativity. After Turn A, he did Overman King Gainer, which sort of paved the way to Gundam Reconguista in G, and those three series are quite out of the box, to say the least. I really don't know if he was trying to break the cycle or what.

    Turn A is in my Top 3 alternate timelines for Gundam, along with 00 and Gundam X. From both the mechanical design, the setting, and the story both taken on its face and the multiple interpretations of it, it felt very much to me like the best thing Tomino could do after Victory Gundam. I had actually watched Victory much after Turn A because I was disinterested in doing so at all, but watched it retroactively mostly just to complete the anime lineup. I might have spoiled myself with that considering how much more I enjoyed Turn A, but if Victory being the way that it was got us Turn A as it turned out, then I can't really complain.

      It's super interesting that Turn A came after Victory considering that they are, thematically, quite the opposite. But yeah, its a very easy going show that even its most complicated parts (the Dark History) can be understood by anyone who has the basic context of: Gundam is a forty year old franchise with many shows.

    I was kinda shocked when years ago, Tomino said that Reconguista in G happens AFTER Turn A. I kinda thought Turn A was supposed to be the endpoint of ALL Gundam, even series that came after it. Maybe that was just Tomino needling his fans again though, as he seems to love doing.

      He's stated repeatedly that Gundam was meant to end with Turn A and G-Reco was a new story without or throwing off the baggage of gundam. Fans and sunrise keep trying to burden him with the Gundam name and refuse to listen to the man. The original title before they stuck Gundam on it was Hajimetai Capital G no Monogatari, the Beginning Story of Capital G, with the G standing for Gravity.

      Well, G Reco features the country of Ameria, which was present in Turn A, and it's easy to consider that the Correct Century calendar ended shortly after the events of Turn A Gundam, leading to the adoption of the Regild Century calendar (and Regild sounds phonetically similar to REBUILD, as in a world that is rebuilding with new tech, doesn't it?). And looking at the Jahannams and other mobile suits of the Amerian military, it's easy to look at them as evolutions of the Replica Zeon mobile suits that the Amerian militas used against the Moonrace in Turn A.

      No the way way tomino wrote the story was that every timeline ends with turn a that no matter what new stories are written no matter how many new timelines are created they all end with turn end reseting the universe to zero using the moonlight butterfly@FredMaverik

      Turn A from what I understand is more like a non fixed timey-whimey stuff that can or will happen to any timeline. Still for me there are a uncertainties about how some things will or can work. Nothing really new, for me G-Reco was even more uncertain than Turn A, until you have some clarification from the extra materials and movies.

    Makes you wonder what the pilot of the Turn A was thinking when he used it to destroy everything? Did he have a psychotic break and just went on a rampage to destroy all to stop war?

    • @absa
      @absa  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Definitely one of the questions that popped in my mind when they were explaining the Dark History. What happened there that the (probably newtype) pilot decided to end everything? Could it be a situation akin to the Banagher/Frontal discussion at the alleged end of time where the pilot, instead of choosing hope, despaired to the point of no return?

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@absa Or perhaps that pilot decided that the problem was the long saga of pain (see perpetual 'lost Lala sunes') and the terrible technology that turned people into weapons, and decided to hit the reset button on it, trusting the same mistakes wouldn't be made again. Who knows how many pilots of Turn A did that under that same logic though.

    Solid video, though the Turn A actually works a bit different than you described: it's an automatic system that activates when a certain level of technology is sensed around it, and it then wakes up and erases all *technology*, leaving behind organic matter; so there will definitely be some casualties from people in hospitals or planes, but it always leaves humanity more or less untouched and forced to build up again. It's a ~preventive measure meant to keep humanity from getting to the point where it can completely wipe itself out.
    Absolutely love this series, wish it was more widely available if only because that would mean there would be more Harry Ord merch floating around.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Another way of seeing it, is that it prevents humanity (in that star system) from ever reaching the technology level of the Turn A's creators.

    Turn A was actually one of the EARLIEST Gundam TV shows I ever watched from start to finish, right after the original MSG 79 (English dubbed), and After War Gundam X. I think having those three shows be my first experiences are the reason I don't really have any animosity towards other Gundam shows that people don't like, because my earliest forays included shows that were all unique and different from each other. I love Turn A Gundam, and it's the reason I enjoy other Gundam works that don't revolve around the traditional war in space story that makes up so much of the franchise (like Build Fighters and The Witch From Mercury, which I adore). Also, this show NEEDS AN ENGLISH DUB!!!! It deserves one!

    I did enjoy Turn A Gundam. I have not watched, it since the first time I saw. It’s hard for me to accept the “Dark History” as the true ending for every different Gundam timeline/universe. I will give some examples. After Colony timeline ended with the disappearance of Mobile Suits. So a mobile suit like the, Turn A Gundam can never appear in the After Colony timeline. Anno Domini of Gundam 00 never changed it’s calendar year. Unlike U.C., F.C., A.C., A.W., C.C., C.E., and like other gundam series that came after Gundam 00. Even 50 years after the encounter with the ELS. Humanity has begun deep space exploration with peace as the only option. Gundam 00 timeline is “almost” like a utopia similar to the another sci-fi franchise “Star Trek”. The timelines that end with humanity choosing peace over war. Will never up part of the “Dark History”. I know most people won’t like my examples but, I am giving you some of the best reasons why Turn A Gundam is the not the end to all timelines/universes. P.S. the technology of all the different timelines/universes are different enough to count as an example. P.S. Amuro Ray is an Earthnoid and was raised at Side 7 since a very young. P.S. Keep up the great work and thank you.

    • @absa
      @absa  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah totally, it's impossible to consolidate all of the franchise's stories in one definitive ending... yet I believe that with Turn A Gundam Tomino was trying to, metaphorically, tie in all of the gundam stories. And then he did the super weird G-Reco hahah

    • @BioGoji-zm5ph
      @BioGoji-zm5ph 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@absa It's easier to see Turn A as the end point just for the shows that were made prior to it. The Anno Domini timeline of Gundam 00 is completely impossible to incorporate into Turn A's Dark History because humanity encountering the ELS pretty much guarantees that the Armageddon War that produced the Turn series mobile suits will never happen in that timeline.

      @absa @DemonX180 @BioGoji-zm5ph The Dark History featured in Turn A, per Bandai and Sunrise is the end of all Gundam timelines, including SEED, AGE, 00, IBO, and everything else that will come in the future. That was first stated in the officially licensed Turn X manual released by Bandai in 2014 and remains canonically true to this day. No matter how inconceivable, the unique and unquantifiable properties of the Moonlight Butterfly's nanomachines makes the Correct Century the absolute finale and consolidating point of every Gundam series, past, present and future.

    14:52 the wars that spanned in the Universal Century for the C.C. story is the only timeline the took place in Turn A Gundam, which is an imitation of the time period name, were spaced out 10,000 years in-between each conflict, and showing imitations of other mobile suits from other Gundam shows. Reconquista in G is a post U.C. story taking place after Victory Gundam and G-Saviour for 100 year plus more than 1024 years. Turn A Gundam is not a sequel to the U.C. saga but rather a respect to canonical U.C work and other A.U. stories and standing alone as it's own storyline.

    I believe in death of the author. Tomino might have wanted Turn A to be the executioner of every gundam timelines. But if you apply death of the author, you can simply disregard what the author wanted or who the author was.
    Turn A is just another timeline of its own. Since it is not part of the canon of other timelines, we are as free to reject it and isolate it into its own self contained narrative.
    The best Tomino can get is being a continuation for the timelines that did exist when turn a released.
    Hell. As I mentioned, since the individual canons of the individual timelines don’t directly say turn a is their end point, or that they even recognise Turn a at all ; and since in a narrative sense, there is irreconcilable continuity issues if you try to combine even the existing timlines when turn a was released…. Turn A carries the same weight in canon as fan fiction.

    i think not liking g reco is a fine approach since I don't really like it either but it's fine because tomino said gundam is for teen and older viewers but the g reco is different it's target is a younger audiences and solely made for younger audience, that's why he makes everything light warming in g reco
