Barbatos is the Eva-01 unit of Gundam

I always saw this anime as very much heavily influenced by Xenogears, but that's just me talking.

"The Most AMBITIOUS" it had a fraction of the budget that Frontier had. After they figured out how much concert sales they were generating off May'n and Megumi they went all in on pushing live action idol shows. As with much long running mecha anime, the show is more so to dive sales in other venues. Such as Bandai and gunpla (kinda like the whole point of old 80's and early 90's satam cartoons in the states was to sell toys). Macross has also been heavily cut off from the western markets because of decades of Harmony gold copyright trolling, so their target market has always been solely Jp.

Back in 1989 a hobby shop opened down the street from the house I grew up in. It was a tiny little hole in the wall place named Models East but unlike most hobby shops at the time it sold things like manga, anime, and model kits like Robotech and things like that. We didn't have ANY of this stuff ANYWHERE in Rhode Island at the time. It just wasn't being imported anywhere unless you happened to be into it, and knew someone who traveled to Japan. The shops owner (a guy named Dave) would often play anime dubs on bootleg he'd acquired from people he knew who traveled abroad and went to local sci-fi conventions. I was 15 at the time, and this film along with Fist of the North Star was one of the very first anime I'd ever seen. The scene where one of the characters gets blasted in the face by a laser beam was the first time I'd ever seen a violent cartoon death. The one where the pilot dies as they crawled out of their ship shocked me as well. It's still pretty disturbing to me even now. It's just that powerful. I'm grateful people still remember DYRL as It will always be special to me.

I saw somewhere that ZZ’s change of tone was actually caused by the reaction to Z being too dark. But I’ll say that if we see ZZ through the lens of the new characters, I guess I can understand that the tone changes since they don’t carry the burden of their predecessors yet

I finished Z recently and I’ll say that I found the whole Katz story super sad. You see it coming from mikes which in a way makes it more painful to watch

Turn a gundam seem like intriguing and interesting series may have to watch it so I can see the turn x it's very underrated mobile suit and the design is one of my one favorites and able to break off into multiple pieces makes it way more better in the franchise and its slept on yes it may have lost to the turn a multiple times. But I would love to see dark history turn x with all the bells and whistles meaning all the gear/armaments it didn't have anymore and how powerful a full powered can be since the one we saw is nothing but a shadow of its former self

Gundam unicorn is bad story, UC deserve better :(

Char in Char's Counterattack makes absolutely no sense in terms of his character progression in Zeta.

I need to watch macross, that looks awesome.

Worst entry in the franchise without a doubt. It's only redeeming qualities are the mecha designs and Mirage.

Newtypes are basically highly entuned with the spiritual. How else does humanity evolve when because of what we can do are technically at our peak. We might not have space colonies or interstellar travel, but we technically beat the basic survival game. The problems we have now are self inflicted vs being the cost of surviving food, water, and shelter. Gundam's always come off as a story of people who don't like change vs people who embrace it. Newtypes connections, higher perception of reality, and more are just examples of what exists in the spiritual. But not a lot of people are ready/willing to accept reality is way more than they've been told/lied too. the anti war/military theme makes a lot of sense, first time I heard about it but it's why I can't stand a lot of the animes. I go by the saying, better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war.

I think the Hyaku Shiki Crash is a nod to Nagano’s FSS designs. The torso of the kit is reminiscent of the Mortar Heads’ design.

I'd say the movie version does a quicker job of getting the story delivered, but I really like the slower path of the OAV's. Personal taste really. It is also fun to watch them both, but with a fair bit of time between viewings because the subject matter is rather heavy.

Is it still ongoing? Ive only read all of the manga that is on mangadex, and its not the entire manga currently, so i am curious to know if the manga is still ongoing to this day, also the Led mirage V3 or the blue knight are my favorite mortar headds

I didn't even realize all the suitle hints to the other characters from other series. Then again, it had been a long time since I've seen those other series.

23:45 Despite the reception of Macross Delta as a whole, the 2nd movie is its Redemption arc and a good tie in to the Original SDF Macross. Glad that the Megaroad-01 mystery is answered.........a little bit.

19:36 Macross Delta Movie 2 kinda gave us the answer the fate of Megaroad 01....albeit not fully e says the How, and Who caused it to lost contact.

Oh my god, Macross DYRL......this movie is 80s masterpiece. Even till today it never get me bored watching it, feels like a love letter and a love story.

This movie is the definition of wasted potential. Every single one of its issues stems from its format. It was originally supposed to be a TV anime and it feels like 26 episodes of a TV anime crammed into a 100 minute film. Not enough time for character development. Not enough time for worldbuilding. Not enough time for subplots. Not enough time for audiences to digest what happened. Things just jump around at lightspeed. This could have been a new beginning for Gundam. An era that was freed from the constraints of the One Year War, Char and Amuro and the Newtypes. Instead it was a failure and Sunrise completely pivoted. Instead of getting a new era of UC, we got the AU timelines. That isn't a bad thing, but UC has been trapped in an endless cycle of repeating the same thing ever since. I actually want F91 to get a second chance some day. A chance to tell its full story properly. I would like to see a TV anime, but more realistically it could be in manga form. The potential is there, we just never got to see that potential fulfilled.

Guess I'll die with out seeing Robotech on the big screen.

I find the mecha design so captivating (Patlabor age), that I can say it's my fav after DYRL.

I love the Macross series, But i even love more "DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE?" Even Though it is a retold compress version i love this one much better.... Btw i do not like robotech, it is the bastardized version if 3 different mech anime.

Felt everything you said like I enjoyed it as a gundam fan, as a time killer lol I felt the actual f91 gundam wasn't anything special and took a back seat even overall a series would have been nice but would had to been a lot flash backs and chance run inns with characters to back track and explain buuut give more chance for extra episodes so wish they could have done an after where they take down the raining crossbones plus maybe another faction teamed up with crossbones could tie in zion faction that is trying to make a come back under clone of past zion leader to pull on nostalgia points

Im only at ep 18, i like the change or added depth to the story as it progress. Looking forward to finishing it and rewatching your vid😊

Thank you for the review, very well made. Do you think this must be taken as a rebooth? Is the same universe than the tv anime? There are some aspect I like very much as the quality of the animation still aging very well and the more alienish inhuman Zentradi aspect and their conflict with the Meltrans. I like the fact the SDF1 cmaes from Meltrans as the Supervision Army concept was never too clrear fro me. I find things too condensed as everything happends pretty fast, and really didn't like Max macronization and his consequent affilation to the Meltran. Millya micronization and her desertion fairer.

Thank you for the review, really well made. Let me add one consideration, I think that the 3 series that made up Robotech share one interesting common aspect: The Starship Troopers factor. A civilian that join the space army (in case of Macross), and the mecha suits against alien enemies in case of all three.

The guns for the Valkyrie in Frontier are absolutely ridiculous in size, not sure i like how they transform as well. I guess nothing can beat the VF-1S in how it transforms and things just work instead of all the "new" exercises in transforming fighters in Macross. I definitely do not like how they changed the way the cockpit is split and it's placement in the Macross Frontier Valkyrie's. I do like that they finally made the Armor work properly as well. Hopefully in the future they get back to the original or closer to the original Valkyrie's.
