- GAIA GEAR is one of the most obscure and mythic creations of Yoshiyuki Tomino, the father of Gundam. It's the tale of Affranchi Char, a memory clone of Char born on Earth who was destined to lead the new rebel organization Metatron that's opposing the MaHA, a cruel and supremacist subfaction of the Earth Federation. The thing is that this story, while written by Tomino, was not done with Sunrise. That's why we don't have mobile suits but Man Machines and we don't have a Gundam but a Gaia Gear...
My name is Absa, and in this video I'll try to explain everything about Gaia Gear, a story written in the eighties that takes place in the original future of Universal Century, in UC 203... but since many things happened with the gundam franchise in the nineties, the existence of Gaia Gear is pretty much rendered invalid... or is it?

The radio drama ending sucks. Afransi just kinda disappears. The novel ending is a VERY happy ending, for even Tomino. Afransi rescues Everly (who had been captured by maha), Ul Ulian is killed, and Everly and Afransi stay in Europe (where all of the earth battles happen) where they are married and Everly is pregnant.
The manhunters, chronologically, started pre-CCA (Beltochika's children, as Tomino himself wrote in the afterward that BC is the ending of Amuro/Char's story that HE wanted but the suits at Sunrise pushed back on him about amuro being married), they became far more authoritarian in HF, but in GG they actually have more political power than the EF itself.
Yes, i own all 5 books, read them last year.
Also, you forgot that the original chapters of Gaia gear in Newtype magazine were originally called "Char's counterattack" but the name was changed to just Gaia gear for the novelization and "Newtype Saga Gaia Gear" for the radio drama because of the movie.
Tomino began writing hathaway's flash when he was near the end of Gaia gear, and the ending of hathaway's flash (Kenneth saying that there will be a new mafty someday) is a direct reference to GG, and the fact weapons like the sand barrel and funnel missiles (originally created for the GGA) were also used in HF is no coincidence. The GGA was created by Anaheim for the Zeon loyalists alive during the HF era, and then hidden away until the "time was right."

@@absa Another thing i forgot to mention is that Afransi always keeps thinking about his memories of Char and he has his own sort of identity crisis through out the story. At first its a feeling that pulls him to leave the island he was living on, and then he starts to feel it much more once he meets Some of the members of The Organization in Hong Kong (i forgot the chick's name offhand that he shows a lot of respect for), then when he jumps into the Zorin Soul for the first time, he doesnt understand why he can pilot man machines so well, its at Heras where he meets everyone in The Organization and they explain his existence to him that things get deeper. Krishna starts to really like Afransi (Krishna is the Lalah of the story imo, not Everly) but Afransi only thinks about Everly.
And the name "Metatron" is the name he gives to The Organization. It was HIS executive decision that caused the name change. I forgot exactly why, ive only done a single readthrough because I've got so much else to read right now, but the name was his.
The Mother Metatron was commanded by a bunch of the older guard of The Organization that were tired of fighting and thats why they didnt send help. That's when afransi took the initiative to just take out the top of MaHa on his own, with support of 3 other man machines. Totally outnumbered but he knew Everly was being held captive in a castle (I cant remember offhand if it was in France or Germany) and he was going to rescue her no matter what.
I've read BC, HF, and GG novels and while i think my favorite of the 3 thats actually well known is HF, I think the best Gundam story tomino ever wrote was GG. So much depth, character development, with just the right amount of action, not too much, not too little. With Tomino novels, you can tell how much hes emotionally invested based on the detail of his writing: HF while great, is lacking in way that GG just explains so much better. GG being a 5 book series might help with that vs HF's 3, but the writing seems more polished.

@@papaonta To be specific, like i mentioned before, The manhunters, CHRONOLOGICALLY, are in CCA. I specifically use beltochika children as a reference point with them because people who have only watched the movie dont realize how evil they are because the most important scene to Quess' character development is basically completely removed from the movie. Quess' father is a big wig in the EF. She went out to hang out with her friends, and her father sent the manhunters to go find her. They find her, apprehend her, then murder all of her friends right in front of her face. Now, if you take that context and implant it onto her absolute hate of her father (which is never explained in the CCA movie), you dont hate Quess as much, because she actually has some DEPTH. She runs off to be with Char, not only because of Amuro being married to Beltochika, but also because the EF, and specifically her father, flat out murdered her friends.
80s, the decade which Tomino produced a ton of mecha anime at cost of his mental health and his characters' lives.
Gaia gear is a happy story, wtf are you talking about? HF is dark and depressing, but Gaia gear is FAR from it.
Yet still can't kill UC due to elitists.

I remember when I first got into Gundam back in the late 90's. Gaia Gear was this mythical far future Gundam story that I could only find bits and pieces of info about. Was a great time looking back on it.
I’m one of those VERY vocal people who hoists Gaia Gear up onto a pedestal. I would love to see the audio drama finished and the novel more widely available fully translated. Personally the story hits and slaps super hard here. Thanks for covering this, this property deserves more love.

@@absa I don't think it need to be touched up too much personally. I don't quite jive with ZS's take on GG. I think it's themes about Eurocentric white supremacy would ring true to life now more than ever, and new Gundam fans would dig Tomino's message highly. I've roughly given the plot to many friends and they all seem to like the overarching plots. Plus, those mechanical designs are absolutely gorgeous and even if its a pbandai release, I think the GG Alpha and ZS would sell like hotcakes.

This prove you can do a Gundam story without slapping the name Gundam on it.
"Universal century ...GAIA GEAR!" has a nice ring to it. Can't really use Mobile suit cos they changed it to "Man Machine" does not roll off the tongue like "Mobile suit"

Dragonar wasnt an AU, as it was after CCA and there were no more planned gundam tv series at the time, so Sunrise wanted a "new gundam" for lack of a better term to get people interested. Thats all it was, was a replacement for gundam that didnt go as well as Sunrise had hoped.

Part of me kind of hopes Gaia gear gets an OVA adaptation someday. Maybe rework the story but I would love to see some modern gunpla of the Gaia Gear mechs.
@Hi_Nu Ver 0 Zero_Tester Agreed, the designs are super creative and weird in a good way, they scream "future of mobile suit designs" in the same way Turn A's did.
Unfortunately, Tomino can only work for a few more years. So I hope he at least reworks the script for Gaia Gear. I feel like it would be the perfect way to cap off the UC

@@paulheap1982 if that's the case for you, I feel sorry for you, for being so narrow-minded, and anyone like me who have to accept mediocre trash like Unicorn or The Origin because of people like you. if your understanding of good animation is janky cgi badly meshed together with plain boring and uncharacteristic 2D animation, good for you. I like my anime to have characteristic animation where I can see animators' talents shine through and put their all into the works. besides, it doesn't stop at animation, the older shows i.e. by Tomino look so much better due to the DIRECTING too
I would like to see it adapted, through it will need a lot of tweaking to work properly. I just feel the UC deserves a better ending than Victory or god forbid G-Saviour which is its own mess.
Is Victory bad? As a conclusion to the UC? I remember reading years ago that the main character of Victory was hinted to be Char's descendant?
@@ultraspinalki11 Victory is a mess and Uso is completely unrelated to Char, that was fanfiction based on the fact his mother has similar surname to Nanai but Tomino thoroughly shot that down.
If you'd like another story involving Clones of Char doin stuff, Real Robot Battle Line on PS1 is ripe with that.
I'm currently doing a solo translation effort with up to stage 9 available on the Akurasu wiki, and 7 episodes of gameplay on my other channel (not linked because I'm not that rude.)
But the series in the game are all Tomino works, so Winkysoft likely consulted him for some ideas

The word "Titan" is from Greek Mythology. If the ancient Greek pronounced it as "tee-tahn" and the Japanese showrunners actually want to be true to the source rather than the America/English way then who are we to judge?
For example: many Japanese manganime & games prefer to use the spelling & pronounciation of the original Greek for *Kerberos* for the 3-headed dog that guard Hades instead of the American/English spelling & pronounciation *Cerberus* that we see in many Hollywood movies.
@@androyus The problem with that is there's no uniform way to pronounce something in Greek. There are several Greek dialects, so this isn't really that great of a point.
Tee-tans is also a lot more distinctive, I like it
@@mechanomics2649 If there are a lot of ways to pronounce "Titan" even in Greek alone, that proves my point even more that we shouldn't badly judge the "tee-tahn" pronounciation done by Gundam. Especially when Gundam itself was not supposed to be made for English-native countries before the surprise popularity of Wing.
Dude, I would so kill for Tomino to direct an anime adaptation of Gaia Gear, 80s aesthetics and all.
Gaia Gear is one of those stories that you want to see it come to life in some way shape or form but done with such proper care. The whole look and aesthetics of it all is just so 80s and I feel like they'd end up doing what they did with Hathaway's Flash and modernize it. I think that was my biggest issue with HF and I really don't want to see that with GG. If they were to bring it to life, I'd want them to keep the 80's look and feel as much as possible instead of making it look "realistic" like they did with Hathaway's Flash. Honestly 'd just be fine with a manga adaptation like they did with Gundam Crossbone.
That movie is NOT hathaways flash, not even fucking close.
GG should NEVER be animated. The novels are enough. Bandai would find a way to fuck it up.
bandai cares only about money. If they need to make it look flashy to appeal to audiences, theyll do it. Look at how they redesigned the gustav karl in G generation F (the first redesign and the first time Bandai acknowledged HF as part of the official gundam timeline) compared to the novel design. The novel design looks closer to something from F91 than CCA. The Messer is sleeker too. Considering that HF was written post-Gaia Gear, you can tell the novel designs were trying to make small connections to GG.
Love it when we can get videos like this about the lesser known pieces of Gundam media. If you ever have the time, might I suggest checking out the even more obscure Cyber Newtype Story: Mad Wang 1160? It’s the first Gundam work to incorporate the use of nanomachines and faster than light travel, concepts that would be elaborated on in other Gundam shows and stories, and is also technically the furthest look into the UC we have if you consider it canon. It just had it’s single volume translated earlier this year, and is a pretty interesting read in my opinion.

In the mid 90's, I began collecting NEWTYPE magazine, mainly for the art work. Being a non Japanese speaker, I always wondered, what Gaia Gear was about. Due to the illustrations, I often wondered if there was any relation to the Gundam Universe. As you stated the Mech designs were amazing!!! I wish more subsequent Gundams took ques from those designs.

I'll be honest here, only clicked this video because the mecha shown in the thumbnail reminded me of the newer Macross Valkyrie designs (vf-25 and up) specifically the torso design.

Eh, many people like me don't have any problem with Narrative. Instead of PTSD, we embrace the movie and its contribution to seal the Psychoframe (PF) technology, opening up more possibilities for future UC anime to go forward without PF-dependence. UC fans who like their "realism" in their UC-verse (whatever that means) should actually thank Narrative to put a (temporary) stop to PF-tech after Unicorn left it hanging.
I think that my comment got misunderstood... I'm all in favor for psychoframe/newtype magick, my gripe with NT is that the story is repetitive and unoriginal, like a watered down version of Unicorn. That's my whole problem, not the super-roboty stuff.
@@absa NT finished the plot that Unicorn left hanging. It's not repetitive. It's taking the story to its next step as an epilogue of the Unicorn saga.
Also, originality is overrated. For example: Char's plan in CCA is only a variation of Haman's colony drop in ZZ. There's nothing really new there other than the Axis shock at the end. As for Gaia Gear, you said it yourself in the video that the plot is like a rehash of HF, but you don't seem to dislike both CCA & GG as much as NT. Seems like a double standard.
@@androyus You are correct in almost everything you say... except that CCA, HF and GG have different mechanical designs. It is true that NT almost completely closed every plot thread of Unicorn in a ver bombastic way... it's just that, for me, the mecha design was underwhelming: The Phenex is a Unicorn variant, the Sinanju Stein is a Sinanju variant, the II Neo Zeong is a Neo Zeong Variant... and even the Gundam NT is a very skinny Nu Gundam variant with interchangable armor parts. I know that it was totally intentional but, man, that's what truly killed me haha.
Hey me too! I do think NT Narrative was just a overly simple rehash of Unicorn without the struggle but overall I think it's a fun movie. I enjoy the movie and think it's overall harmless. I'm more glad that we got the content than not having it.

I still liked Narrative for what it did, but you are right, Gaia Gear could be a similar take on what it did to the newtype myths, maybe a final send off untill the Turn A reset.
Hopefully you cover G-savior as well! It's weird and in a strange place in canon, but apart from the movie every other story made for it (the novel, audio drama and game) where pretty cool additions to the story
bandai has stopped even acknowledging G saviour's existence. Personally, i didnt think it was "bad" persay, but bandai was at a point in their production of gundam where it stagnated and were just trying new shit for the sake of it. The PS2 game is quite good for the time tbh, even if its linear. The thing that holds the ps2 game is the AWFUL voice acting. Holy shit i dont think ive heard worse voice acting in anything EVER. It makes the acting in the tv movie look like an award-winning masterpiece (i say that with NO sarcasm).

@@xenocyde8498 they are trying to hit all markets at once. Sunrise failed with the kids when they did SD gundam in the 80s, and after bandai bought sunrise, they made it a point to go away from Tomino gundam (aka serious gundam) and do their own thing (gundam wing was their first attempt to expand to get girls interested, it didnt go as well as they hoped, but it was experience that led to Seed). The issue is now that Bandai has found a record of success printing money with gundam, they are pandering and not focusing on story.
@@xenocyde8498 what gundam build fighters is great. It like beyblade or pokemon. Build fighters is marked towards children. You can still enjoy it though. Plus it fun seeing gundam parts being used to make new models

the man machines are closer to what the original HF mobile suit designs (novel versions) are. Bandai, when they released SD Gundam g Generation F, they did redesigns of the HF stuff to make them way bulkier, especially the Gustav Karl.

there ARE model kits of the Zorin Soul, GGA and one other... Garage kits from the late 80s/early 90s that, as a set, will cost you near 2000 USD.
not a Tomino work but we also have 'For The Barrel' which is a weird re-imagining of the original 1979 Gundam complete with its own mecha not being called Mobile Suits.

0:42 Turn-A Gundam is it's own separate timeline, and Tomino did his own spin-off of a Universal Century in the Alternate Universe but the Correct Century is it's timeline in Turn-A. G-Reco is a sequel 1014 years after plus 100 years after G-Saviour.
no, turn a takes the entire gundam universe, from 0079-AW (1979-1997) and puts it all in one universe. That is whats called the "Black history" the history that was forgotten. Scenes of this are iirc episode 32 i wanna say? When Diana takes all of them into that holo projection room and shows them the entire history that was lost. Why do you think Turn X has God Finger? Direct connection to G Gundam.
@@pilotamurorei Turn-A Gundam is it's own Universe in the Correct Century. It's not a continuation of the original. Sure there can be two different RX-78-2 is two different universes. The U.C. saga and the Alternate Universe saga.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes tee-TAHNZ more than pronouncing it as an English word. The choice to use Latin (or Greek?) pronunciation for that, and the name of their homebase Gryps, I think, helps add to the whole "military/fascist dictatorship" vibe of them. Those kinds of political ideologies IRL are obsessed with a romanticized view of the past!

@@gabrielakrist11 Most of the novels are easy to find (like you can go to any bookstore and buy them). Gaia Gear is the one that costs a massive premium because it only had two printings, both in the 80s.

also, if you can, dont get the new printings of the Hathaway's flash novels. The cover art is disgusting. Try to find an older one, with Mikimoto's GOOD artwork on them. I got most of my gundam novels 20 years ago, the only exception being gaia gear which i got last year. I dont have a lot of em though, and i never bothered to read the Z novels.

One other thing I like the good Char character.
From a purely conceptual way of thinking, I do think that it would be nice to have GG animated as maybe OVA's or movies since with that we would have all of Tomino's UC adapted and animated: Everything started with MSG 79, continued with Z, ZZ, CCA, HF and "ended" with Gaia Gear.
But to be totally honest... I don't think we will see anything GG related right now, or maybe ever, since Sunrise is prominently riding the Unicorn wave.

I thought "man hunters" were more of a nickname, as the police in the opening of Char's Counterattack are called man hunters, as are ECOAS in the unicorn novel and I *believe* the man hunters in Hathaway's Flash are the same organization as the ones in Char's Counterattack. Are they more of an actual military force in Gaia Gear or just another nickname?
In Gaia Gear they are actually called manhunters: ManHunter Agency, hence the acronym MaHA.

Manhunters in CCA are no police, they were like the titans, just with less power. However, they were in charge of keeping "illegal visitors" off earth, and when HF comes along, they become far more draconian in their methods. Gaia Gear Manhunters are basically a new version of the Titans, by the end of the books almost overthrowing the EF government and taking the reigns themselves (they fail though).

I mean I shouldnt say that now since im in the middle of reading record of lodoss war and thats 7 books, plus the 2 side stories High Elf Forest and Dark Knight, then the continuation New Record of lodoss war and Legend of Crystania. Plus i have all 17 books of Slayers to get to... Not to mention the Macross II novelization.
But like i said in other comments, I wanna do a review of the gaia gear novels so I'm gonna do a reread of it at some point. It7s on my list of things to do after i finish my sailor moon another story lets play, and my review of Macross II, both in English and japanese because no one has bothered to do it, because "MACROSS FRONTIER MASTER RACE" garbage.

I disagree about unicorn feeling like early u.c. series... they focused waaay to much on gimicking out the newtype's and completely ignores what happens when psychoframes resonate with other units with psycoframes as well seriously stupid time manipulation... that was so out of place... even for a series that uses souls to create ai systems(exam system) so yeah... no sorry i will argue hard in that one

@@pilotamurorei hey now hathaways flash the movie is only a world building since things in the anime story line differ from the manga/books so they are trying to adjust to it (so im giving it a chance)... the next movie is where they are gonna be diving into the actual hathaway story... but yeah unicorn just flat out ignores the meaning of the uc story and tomino's messages and tones... also newtypes they fucked that up badly lol... which again i gotta give hathaways flash credit for they could have included unicorn but it feels like with that they are just trying shove unicorn and nt to the side

@@rpgtimefire Tomino has NOTHING to do with the disaster known as the Movie. Tomino only gets "creator" credits. And I dont care about the west, I live in and have lived in Japan for 16 years and am fluent (which is why i have read gaia gear, Hathaway's flash, am in the middle of Record of Lodoss war and the macross II novelizations).
Everything about the movie is garbage and does not exist. The only canon of HF is the novels, period.
