Between Henry Catchpole and Chris Harris, the UK has spawned two of the finest motoring journalists in the world. In fact, no, it has spawned THE finest two.
The reason for the hybrid’s existence is not performance. It’s reduced EU emission fines. All data from the cars are now sent to the manufacturers when they are in for a service, and the manufacturer then sends the data to the EU for real world emissions and energy consumption.
for me the Porsche hybrid technique is a way of complicating the reliability problem and moreover this system does not bring any savings in use and taxes. The pleasure is elsewhere.

I would like to know what watch you are wearring. I love it! Blue Dial, black bezel, yellowish orange hands and on a nato, awesome! Please tell me what this timepiece is called and who made it.
Back in UNI, we modified a 8kW hub motor (from a cheap electric dirt bike) to be mounnted on the front hub of a 125cc 2t KTM dirtbike (we choose KTM because it was among the few dirtbikes that had a reliable 12V alternator+battery). It was an hybrid sport toy. It was heavier enough to be judged "bad" by professionals, but, oh boy, on straights and hills you could definitely feel those additional kW. When I think of hybrids, I don't think of a modern Prius. I think of the 2008ish model, able to pass easily most ice cars simply because it had one more motor.
Good point. I heard on another video that this engine works with somewhat less boost, but if I recall the number correctly this "less boost" is 1,2bar which is still enormous. So maybe a little bit less heat than the previous model, but still a lot of heat.
Not sure we’re getting a manual with this new hybrid setup since one of three two e-motors is actually incorporated into the PDK transmission. Don’t think that would work with a manual
Honda has done it 10 years ago at least, so it is technically possible. The thing with Porsche is they 're part of the biggest EV lobbyist group, so I think they have already planned to kill the manual. @theairaccumulator7144 They will even resort to making the GT3RS automatic (or worse, a full EV).
Personally I think this looks stunning. The issue I have is that manufacturers have chased bhp numbers so much that you simply cannot use more than 50% of the power at the most before losing your licence. I doubt anyone would actually notice the improvement in performance unless on a track over the previous model.
I did a project on electric turbo chargers at university 10 years ago! Im not sure why both turbines share a shaft like a traditional turbo? I previously thought they would have a split turbo, so you could place the two turbines wherever is most efficient and only connect them electronically so you're not spinning up the exhaust turbine unnecessarily when you want eboost.
Its for the crowd that used to drive SL ( before that became a 2 seat limo) Should have made the cayman all electric with a 200 mile range. Hybrid just makes everything more complicated and expensive.
Regulations for emissions and safety always seem to add to a vehicle. I wonder if they'll ever pass a vehicle density regulation - something like the maximum weight of a vehicle for a certain size which could potentially stop vehicles from getting heavier and heavier. Lighter cars would require less energy, use less consumables, and be safer all while improving the vehicles driving dynamics. Then car enthusiasts could benefit from regulations (we do for safety, but I think that they go too far). I'd love to see emissions and/or safety targeted by taking 1,000lbs out of a car.
I think they 're making cars heavier on purpose. They 're actively trying to remove the fun from driving, just because they want to convince us to trust autonomous EVs. I for one am not falling for it.
When done right a hybrid should actually be better to drive than a non-hybrid, especially in a turbo setup, simply because an electric motor has precisely the thing that a turbo engine lacks (although with an e-turbo that to is only marginal): direct response...
If the e-motor is integrated within the PDK, does that also mean that the PDK is _finally_ mechanically serviceable from Porsche? Or are we still left with a non-repairable transmission, except by those aftermarket shops that proclaim that they have the know-how? The eTurbo as described sounds like a pretty neat piece of kit. Hopefully Porsche DOES follow through with a manual gearbox for the base Carrera, which is about the _only_ new 992.2 that I might be able to afford.
VAG has been lobbying real hard for EVs, so I doubt it cares about the option of manual transmission. Also, I suspect the electric motor isn't going to make the transmission any more serviceable.
@@Lina_Antoniou Porsche however thinks _differently_ than the rest of VAG. And we're already seeing the widespread reluctance backlash from consumers regarding EV acceptance, at least here in NA if not elsewhere in the world. Moreover the video itself already dropped a hint that Weissach is already working on a "solution" for a manual box with the base 992.2, if not also expanded to others in the upcoming range. A 911 without three pedals is criminal; why even bother calling it a 911 anymore? As for the PDK; well it's true that the e-motor could be in a separated section that's compartmentalized from the rest of the transmission which then could remain sealed but what's the point? It's already a very real black-eye sort of thing about older PDKs regularly failing with use and age, with the only _authorized_ solution being a costly replacement with a new unit. Hardly an "eco-friendly" solution to the issue given that the appearances of _hybridness_ can be something to placate the green-thinking regulators, and it's certainly _not_ a budget-friendly path as well at around $25k just for the unit alone (997.2, for instance).

Found out by myself, it's a Scurfa Diver One.
Henry at his finest!
Excellent journalism as always team
I have a 2002 model Prius, it's surprisingly zippy up to about 30 mph because the electric motor has some 260 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque at 0 rpm.
Great Video as always. Love your work Henry.
I didn’t understand the point about lambda - he says the larger displacement helps prevent overheating but how does the new turbo effect overheating?
Good point. I heard on another video that this engine works with somewhat less boost, but if I recall the number correctly this "less boost" is 1,2bar which is still enormous. So maybe a little bit less heat than the previous model, but still a lot of heat.
Yes it looks pretty much the same the Porsche 911. Great video. Thanks for sharing! 💯👊👍
Fantastic and informative video, i doff my cap to you sir!
Great review Henry, great to see Porsche have extracted the gold from the legislation... many thanks!
Brilliant visuals and well done Porsche!
Thanks for the explanation on the hybrid system
Congrats for this video! Please, i need to know: Where is this place?
Not sure we’re getting a manual with this new hybrid setup since one of three two e-motors is actually incorporated into the PDK transmission. Don’t think that would work with a manual
We're getting a GT3 manual for sure. Would be stupid if they didn't make one because it was the majority of GT3 sales.
Super Video as always!!! Thanks ❤
Another great review Henry!
another excellent review by catchpole ...
Looks better than previous generations
GT3 esque front and better proportioned rear (more square, centered exhaust 😍)
for track duty, The ND MX5,with sway bars and tires is hard to beat. the Lambda equation on that car is smiles vs corners
Sounds like a silly question but how can you increase displacement with the same pore and stroke... ? 8:35
They just kept the same ratio between them.
Personally I think this looks stunning. The issue I have is that manufacturers have chased bhp numbers so much that you simply cannot use more than 50% of the power at the most before losing your licence. I doubt anyone would actually notice the improvement in performance unless on a track over the previous model.
The graphic description of the new hybrid platform is an amazing way to show a visual
That is from Porsche
Excellent as always
I hate the air intakes, I hate the bumpers. Added complexity to a pure nicely-balanced design.
It's ghastly
Absolutely. And the cameras/ radar make it look even worse!
It sucks big time!
There are plenty of old ones going around. It's not like we're ever going to run out of them.
Thanks, Mr catchpole, for delivering the only car content I want to see.
Henry and Hagerty … a match made in HEAVEN
Great Review. What's the coupe color: Slate Grey Neo or Vanadium Grey Metallic.
I suppose the world must evolve.. but I'm just too old fashioned to accept this. Not a 911 in my eyes. videos are always done well!
Lovely video.
Hagerty, have you heard that there is a delay in producing the 992.2 GTS? It is somewhat of a mystery. Do you have any ideas about the hold up?
Its for the crowd that used to drive SL ( before that became a 2 seat limo)
Should have made the cayman all electric with a 200 mile range.
Hybrid just makes everything more complicated and expensive.
Damn it, you made me excited about a hybrid
9:12 Love the innovation that Porsche continues to do 🔑
The sound does not have the artificial and ridiculous pop pop pop on downshifts. Beautiful car, love the Targa (no wind noise this time?)
The camera look is fantastic, like a cinema film.
Which camera was used?
I was waiting for the "catchpole" review 😊
Superb film, enjoyable, informative. Well done Henry (what I appear to have said out loud - rather embarrassingly- after watching this 😂)
Regulations for emissions and safety always seem to add to a vehicle.
The new aero kit makes the front end look much nicer.
Excellent Henry
Another world class review ..
