@lordvastor98 You're right, but the Jedi Order did have to get wiped out to bring balance. Most of those Jedi were not following the force the way they were meant to. They were actually causing imbalance themselves because they practiced a false doctrine. Qui Gon Jinn and Jedi like him were the true Jedi. Most Jedi were like Mace or Luminara. Anakin and Ahsoka were closer to being true Jedi as well but of course Anakin took it a bit too far and went dark and Ahsoka started saying she was no Jedi but she was. Eventually Obi-Wan and Yoda learned from Qui Gons force ghost and Anakins redemption that the old way was not the right way. Luke was supposed to build a New Jedi Order the way it was meant to be but Rian Johnson and Disney screwed that up

The reason Kanan wears the mask is:
    1) In-story reason, he's trying to utilize his old Jedi training of wearing a mask to recall his training days when he would block his sight and rely on the Force to guide him.
    2) Meta reason: Animators didn't want to show the injury he sustained. I imagine it was difficult to animate, so they just decided to put a mask on to save some effort.

If you look at Anakin, you can see the pain in his expression even if it's hidden under his mask. Other than plot purposes, Ahsoka couldn't save him because of 2 reasons. 1, he remembered the moment she said, "I'm sorry master, but I'm not coming back" which was as big a reason for becoming Vader as padme and the kids. 2, she brought out a shred of good and he hated that

The last time Obi wan saw Anakin he was at the height of his darkness hence why he didn't believe he could be saved when he spoke to Luke. One of the most somber endings in Star Wars and a hell of a cliffhanger. At this point we didn’t know what happened to Ashoka. There was a faint trace of her in the ending scene where she’s walking down into the temple but we didn’t know if that was real or symbolic. Kanan is blinded by Maul, he’s able to use his Jedi training to defeat him but still can’t see. Meanwhile Ezra is blaming himself for all of it. He realizes Maul used him and if he hadn’t trusted him Ashoka would be alive and Kanan wouldn’t have gotten hurt. Mauls words, the holocrons message, and his encounter with Vader are influencing him, feeding his guilt. I remember gasping at the last scene where he opens the holocron because I couldn’t believe he would knowingly use the dark side. But then I thought about it and with everything he just experienced, he wants something good to come from it and he knows the holocron contains knowledge. As the old saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We know Ezra isn’t opening it because he’s bad, but he’s using his pain to fuel his search for power so he can beat people like Vader.

An interesting bit of trivia that I don't remember where I watched it, but I think it was someone 'official' talking about it. The area on Vader's mask that Ahsoka cuts away was done in a way to match a scar that is seen when you get to Return of the Jedi, and in Obi Wan, it was the same portion of the mask and you can see the scar.

That's why I always say: Rebels is the backbone of the new StarWars (at least in my opinion). It has the most world-building (some of the most important parts of that world-building are yet to come) and the most important new characters (because they are good new characters that people want to see more of).
But it also has some really good scenes and storylines that are in Fact good enough that other parts of StarWars take massive inspirations from it. Like the mask-scene of Rebels which many years later was used in Obi-Wan as well or Ezra as a Character who is in many ways a blueprint for Rey but was made a year earlier (and in my opinion is better executed)

"Two Jedi and a... part-timer." You can always rely on Maul for a biting insult! Vader's entrance on his TIE fighter is a great moment, and I love how Ahsoka almost gets through to Anakin. When she says "I won't leave you. Not this time", he hesitates. You can see him thinking "Is there still a chance for me?", before Vader reasserts control. The reaction of Hera and Rex when Kanan and Ezra return is really poignant - even AP-5 looks depressed! Most concerning is Ezra's ability to open the holocron, because he's using the dark side of the Force to do so.

The last few pieces of "Anakin Skywalker" left are tied to those three people.

This came first before the Obi-Wan series, obviously, but the two are meant to mirror each other. Each took a different half of the mask, but neither could remove the whole thing to bring Anakin out in Vader.
This one is always sadder to me, though. At the beginning you could almost hear Vader being childishly naive in saying Palpatine would offer Ahsoka mercy when we understand that he would happily kill her, or force Vader to do it, to keep his apprentice under his control. Then, when Ahsoka talks about avenging Anakin, the first thing he did instinctively is admonish her and remind her that revenge is not the Jedi way. Part of me always thought that if Ahsoka had reached out to "Skyguy" rather than Anakin there she might have pulled more of his old self out. Vader hated Anakin, hated that part of himself, for failing to save Padme. Palpatine conditioned him to think of Anakin as a different person that Vader needed to overcome as a Sith, but he never said anything about Snips and Skyguy. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Ahsoka could have saved him there, but she could have pulled more of Anakin to the surface for a moment.

Now imagine YEARS of thinking you had seen Asoka die, never knowing her Master was still alive, never finding out about his redemption and sacrifice to save the Galaxy. Only to finally notice a single grammatical mark change on a T Shirt as the wink and nod that Asoka WAS still alive. Dave wore a T Shirt to Star Wars Celebration that simply read Asoka Lives? Then played a trailer that seemed to indicate she DID live and would return. Then, after the trailer, the astute noticed in the darkness he had changed his T Shirt. It now read Asoka Lives!

Hi Tara, Just found your channel recently & have been binge watching for this episode ever since :D. This is such a special episode & that scene with Anakin reaching out to Ahsoka through Vader was just so brilliant that they chose to put a similar one in Kenobi (probably for folks that didn't watch Rebels). The layers to that scene are mind blowing. There are instances of both Sam Witwer (Voice of Maul & many other fan favs) & Dave Filoni himself talking about it during an interview.
The way I see it, Ahsoka knocks Vader out & Anakin awakes as if from a deep slumber with no memory of things & all he can see is 'Ahsoka'. He calls out to her as if he doesn't believe it's real. As his pupils dilate & turn red again, one can imagine all the pain of his life flashing before his eyes & the regret/shame of his deeds takes over & Anakin sinks back into hiding behind the mask that is known as Vader. Vader on the other hand, seething with anger over the pain of Anakin's memories, proclaims, 'then you will die' & Anakin's lost all over again.
Reminiscing over the feelings I had watching this for the first time & now watching new fans going through similar feels is just precious to me. Thanks for sharing your* reaction. Looking forward to your foray into more Star Wars content. May the force be with you, always :)

Because some Jedi never completely loved him, didn't respect him, didn't trust him, didn't take him seriously and even despised him.
As a child before Obi-Wan started teaching him, he was hated and psychologically bullied by other children "Anakin is a slave to his feelings" and that was only because of envy because he was much more gifted and skilled than them.

Edit: You did see it. So this episode rhymes SO hard with Kenobi's last fight with Vader. There are a few differences that stand out in amazing ways.
    - Kenobi opened the right side of his helmet, and Ahsoka opened the left, symbolizing both of their effects on Anakin and how important they were, but neither was the only one that knew him, and only their two relationships show the true Anakin. (Also note: Only Luke can remove his entire helmet)
    - Ahsoka seeks vengeance for the death of her master. Kenobi mourns the death of his friend.
    - Vader drops both of them off of the high ground (he learned his lesson)
    - The dialog is virtually the same.
It's the same fight from the perspective of master vs apprentice. Feloni is the Star Wars God.

So fun fact this was originally where Ahsoka died, which is weird because right after it shows Vader coming out of the rubble it shows her walking deeper into the temple but after this episode came out the creators said this was the end of her story and she wouldnt be in anything after this which is no longer true if it ever was in the first place

Anakin came out for a few seconds. Then Vader took over. What Ahsoka does next is hinted by the Ahsoka cards Filoni made.

The official end of the Inquisition. After this event, they will not rise again.
    As for Maul's plan
His plan A was to use this knowledge and the power of the temple to kill the Emperor and Vader. He knew they would lose as soon as he sensed Vader. Right after sensing Vader, he decided to go with plan B. Attempt to lock Vader in the temple taking Ezra and the holocron.
Maul has already trained one apprentice who will even disturb the Emperor, but she has one minus - she is not force sensitive, that's why he wants Ezra
Kanan is now blind but he won duel with Maul because as always Maul is arrogant and never underestimates his opponent. That's why he always loses.
And finally Ahsoka and Vader's duel
Tano used all the lessons. Anakin prepared her to fight General Grivess, who is taller and slower than her, Yoda helped her with the Jarkai style, Barriss gave her advice on using the Force during combat/duel. However, Ahsoka lost that fight anyway. At the end of the fight, Vader does not attack for a while. It is Anakin who tries to fight to stop Vader, but only for a moment.
Ezra opened the holocron. He opened himself to the dark side. What the Grand Inquisitor said is coming true.

It's a sith holocron and can only be opened either by a sith or a jedi giving in to the dark. Either Vader wants to learn from the holocron, hide it or destroy it. Remember, Vader like all sith wanted to overthrow his master but Palpatine intentionally limited his suit for this reason

6:10 I wish we got the rest of the 10 still unfinished Clone Wars arcs ,which Disney cancelled after taiking over Star Wars back on screen again. We would have seen what happened to Asajj Ventress in the cancelled "Dark Disciple" arc which was also turned into a book, btw. That arc would have apparently been 8 episodes long and would have been the longest in the series.

This show was made before Kenobi, so Kenobi actually ripped this episode off

12:56 neither Obiwan nor Ahsoka alone could take the mask of Vader off wholly. We see in these shows they get half the mask the off. Only Luke, his son, could free Anakin from Vader.

rip Ahsoka Tano .. No this is the first time we saw Anakin's face like that the Kenobi series was disappointing because they copied it But yeah as of right now Ahsoka is gone... Is it really her later..lol Also a little fact that little owl that you see is the same one You saw at the end of the clone wars flying above Darth Vader ...

The temple "Presence" is the voice of Nika Futterman she played Asajj Ventress in Clone wars as well as a lot of Star Wars projects and games going back decades. There is a theory that the Presence is Darth Traya. And the battle station is Dave's idea of the Mass Shadow Generator. That left the planet in ruin. Check out the history of Malachor V and the the great battle that took place there. Both armies Jedi and Sith where wiped out. The aftermath seen here is inspired by Pompei.

You should be somewhere around 3 BBY now, Season 3 will address what happens to a major character in Andor which is 5 BBY. Just in case you want to double back and watch that before continuing.

This is my favorite Rebels episode, when i saw this i remember thinking this should have been a movie, it left me with empire strikes back feelings, of things are looking bleak, we wont see what happened to Ashoka until season 4, we all thought she was dead for 2 years, the next 2 seasons have a lot great episodes but for me they are close at best, your journey is just started getting interesting in the next 2 seasons
