Best Cases for LED Lights (& Other Camera Gear) | SKB + Impact

  • In this video I show you various carrying and travel case options for your LED video lights and other camera gear.
    I cover inexpensive soft cases and semi-hard roller bags from Impact, as well as premium hard cases from SKB that are water and dust proof, lockable, and come with a lifetime warranty.
    If you're a solo creator, cheaper soft cases might be the best way to travel or keep your gear organized, but if you're a working professional, the SKB hard shell cases are hard to beat because they can last an entire career.
    I test fit Godox video lights into each case, and list exactly how many fit inside so you can choose the best size for your own gear. I share the capacity of each case with the Godox SL150W, SL200W, SL150W II, SL200W II, FV150, FV200, VL150, VL200, VL300, and UL150.

    Do you have a bunch of lights but no way to store them? What type of cases do you have? Do you think any of these are the perfect fit for your lighting kit?

    • @cubul32
      @cubul32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I vote hardcase if money is available - even as a sacrifice. Was about to spend 200 something on a smaller hardcase for an UL150 (the one I told you I just bought - and was thinking it's insane I spend almost as much as on the light). But then I realized I can spend double and get a large case and keep other gear I have bundled in one spot (which would make transport faster and simpler, as well as organization on set). As for the price, the safety involved in handling the gear is well worth it and I come to realize I'm buying safety as a product - my reasoning: it's not just a case, but a case which could be thrown down the stairs, left in the rain, left in harsh weather in general, and the gear would survive (which is not always the case for the other); for 250 bucks more that gains a whole new perspective if you ask me.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cubul32 Good insight. If you pack things properly in a case like this, you can literally (like you said) throw them off a balcony into a pool and everything inside will be totally fine.
      Especially if you're buying one of the larger cases, you could easily have $5,000+ worth of gear inside, so $400-500 for a case seems like a lot, but it's almost like buying additional insurance for your gear.
      Throw some locks on it and some AirTags and it's another easy way to keep track of it should it disappear as well.

    Having a hard time looking for large roller cases to dump my lights and stands (and hopefully slider) into. I carry nearly 90lbs of gear by myself so I'm trying to transition to rolling bags.
    That Skb 4414 seems like a great size for my needs. Just wish it wasn't so heavy.
    Currently contemplating over it and the ThinkTank production manager 50 v2. The Skb is slightly deeper and wider and just slight shorter. But I love all the extra pockets and sections to insert things into on the ThinkTank.

    Great review, you have a new subscriber! I had the Impact roller case break after one shoot. One wheel broke and the handle ripped off. I had to replace the wheels with casters from home depot by adding plywood to the bottom and add a heavy duty cabinet handle to the top with plywood on the inside to screw into.
    I later saved up for the Thinktank Production case (almost got a SKB, but didn't fit c-stands) and it is probably my best investment into my photography business. I've taken it to 100+ shoots and it's still rocking! I will definitely keep an eye out for the SKB cases, especially since they're made with Thinktank.

Other softboxes are permanently affixed to the speed ring, so don't fold down as flat. It's really hard to say, so you'd have to make a judgment call based on the listed measurements I think.

    Between SKB 4414-10 and 4213-12 - which one do you think it's a better value? I somewhat mentally lean towards 4213-12 because I can stack up more stands, but idk why my heart says 4414-10 because I'm gonna always bring with me a couple of c-stands and a D600 avenger boom arm anyway; and I think I like the smaller depth of the 4414-10 which would keep the lights more tight. The 12 inch aspect of the other one rather makes me paranoia; thinking the lights gonna jingle in there. Any advice?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go for the biggest one out of those options. They are both pretty large, so I think having the extra capacity would be nice to have.
      I had the same worry you mention, but the padding is very good and tight internally, so things might move, but definitely not get damaged. You would just be leaning the case to roll or moving it a bit, rather than a lot of big movements, so really things won't move much even with room to spare inside.

      @@NewLayer bh staff said that because 42 has 42.5 inch inside without padding that my impact stands might not fit. So I went with 44. Meh', experience. We'll see how it goes.

      @@cubul32 It can definitely be a bit of a puzzle since these are more generic and not purpose built. So sometimes it's good to get the case you love and find stands/accessories to fit.

      @@NewLayer I kinda made the right decision I think but BH's numbers are all wrong and mixed up. I have 43.5 by 13.5 by 8 inches inside with padding, they said it's without - via chat (multiple users confirmed).. I checked both 4414-10 and 4213-12 based on the skb website and the dimensions for the bare case are in the name (lol) ish 44.5x14.5x10 vs 42.375x13.5x12. The padding is 0.5 inch so at 41.375 my stands are too tall. I could only fit 2 of the 9.5 ft impact HD stands (I have a stands bag anyway). They each need 4" of height. If I take the 4213-12, I gain 2 inches height; but loose 1 inch on length and width. So then it becomes narrower, shorter but slightly taller. So not sure if it's worth it.
      What stands did you mange to fit into it? Like 3 of them. I really wanna know the models now.
      I imagine if I want to travel compact, that having 3 stands with me, along with 3 lights, would be really nice. So will think it over for a few days. Maybe I'll get the larger case and new stands who knows. These impact ones were just investments for starters anyway. Maybe 3 smaller c-stands with turtle based would be a good choice too.

    Can i able to fit 2 Amaran 100x lights and 3 light stands?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  ปีที่แล้ว

      The lights are no problem, the deciding factor would be the light stands. You would definitely want one of the 2 biggest cases, but if you double check the measurements and they match up for the length of your collapsed light stands, then you're good to go!

      I don’t have a 300d on hand to measure right now and the online dimensions all include the yoke for some reason, but they are right around the same size as the 150 and 200 watt SL II and FV series Godox lights.

    5:00 what light stands are you using that are 23"?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are just some cheap GVM stands that came with lights I got a while back. They are really only suitable for small (12" x 12" or less) panels, pocket lights, etc. Unfortunately I don't see that they sell them separately.

    How about 3 vl300s lights plus stands?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The VL300s are one the smaller side compared to the other 150-200 watt lights in the other series, so if 3 other 150-200 watt lights fit into any given case, the VL300s will too.
      The harder part are the light stands, so you'll want to double check on the length of a potential case to ensure the light stands will fit.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on what else you want to fit in them, but it's ~12", so all of the cases except the smallest one I link in the description would work, most of the time you'd have to lay it flat, but it may be able to sit vertically in the bigger ones. I don't currently have one to test for sure, sorry.

    what about best cases for tube lights

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4' tube lights are tough because it's hard to find cases that long that make sense for other gear too. I would imagine SKB has cases with pick-apart foam that would work well. Other than that, 2' or smaller tube lights fit very well into many of the cases in this video.
      I also like that Nanlite Pavotube 15C 4-light kit because it comes with it's own case that makes taking all 4 with you really easy.
