    Alex has trained at Jason Morris’ dojo in upstate NY many times. Jason is a great Judo mind and understands how to use Judo in Wrestling. Alex did not wrestle until high school in the tough state of Illinois. He made wrestlers play his game of Judo on a wrestling mat.

    • @scourge8097
      @scourge8097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@navigatingel6104 We don't really feel that much about it. We'd encourage him to use that overhook leg toss as a last result. If he's getting to the State Finals, he's probably good enough to win, but he's also going to run into guys who are going to love him giving up the inside position and they're going to either drop down on a single or if they're Greco guys as well(which...again, I think that Cramer kid was, but we look at over 150 kids a year, so I could be mistaken) they're going to go right into a body lock right there and that overhook isn't going to do much for him.
      So...I only coached at HS for about 2 years after I finished my College career, but as a HS Coach I'd try to work with him to have him mix it up a little bit. Definitely use the foot sweep, but over the underhook.
      As a College coach...and in the B1G I mean, there's talent there, but I don't know that we'd go after that. He's putting himself in a lot of danger vs the best Wrestlers and he's going to get thrown to his back quite a bit.
      That's also not everyone's goal and he made the state finals in one of the 10-15 best Wrestling States in the Country.
      But it's impressive with some bad habits that I'd try to work on. But again, all in all, state finals...nice run.

    Wrestling and Judo are close cousins. I wrestled in the 1980's and you saw more of this. Not because we knew judo but because upper body ties, back-steps, and throws were more encouraged. That first move was a "barrel roll" and was common in the 80's. I haven't seen it used that well if at all in years. I used arm throws like crazy and I never see those anymore in wrestling (at then international level I see them). Those back steps (not sure what the judo names are) that put guys on the ground is something that I was very good at. I'm glad there's a judo guy showing us the value of these techniques once again.

    • @smashleyscott8272
      @smashleyscott8272 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      EXACTLY.... wrestling teaches these techniques too.

    • @knaufjudo8597
      @knaufjudo8597  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I believe the techniques are not as similar as you may think... In Judo, the principal is to use your opponent’s off balance and energy to your benefit. That’s why his technique looks so smooth and effortless. In wrestling you go against your opponent’s force, which is less fluid and expends more energy. So the technique is actually quite different.

    • @MtuckerGoBlue
      @MtuckerGoBlue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@knaufjudo8597 Not really. Perhaps at the high school level. But in college, it's all about the set-up. Getting your opponent to get off balance or out of position in a way that allows the attack to work. I think the beauty of judo is that is utilized a more full-body attack (upper body tie-up and grips combined with foot sweeps and back-steps). Wrestling tend to attack in a more isolated way. Just think of the take down names in wrestling, "single-leg" "double-leg" "Duck Under". You know exactly what is happening. When I grapple with Judo guys, you think you're safely tied up then BOOM, they sweep you. And your laying on your butt thinking "What the hell just happened". But when a wrestler attacks it's more like, "he's got my leg, now he's got me on the ground, he's climbing up my body into a better position". I admire the fluidity of Judo take downs and the tenacity of wrestling take downs.

    I did Judo pre-teen and started wrestling in high school. Wrestlers hated me. The big difference was the rules. In wrestling, at take down was just points and a means to pinning someone. It didn't matter how hard you'd took down the person, so wrestling never focused on doing it harder than you 'needed' to. In Judo, a clean throw on your back would win the match outright. Yes, starting out, I could throw a less experienced wrestler, but they'd reverse out and get the points back. The also had a tendency to stop wrestling matches if you through people too hard and then restart you in a different position -- after the person recovered from the being winded. Different rules really give different outcomes.
    That said, we had some great guys at our dojo who were blackbelts, did wrestling, hit the gym, and were solid muscle. You just couldn't throw them.

      All takedowns are taught from the white to the black belt. It isn't that in judo we prefer uperbody, it's just that our sport just don't favors it.
      But it's kinda sad that those throws like chin whip, wich are similar to ours, are so obscure in wester wrestling, at least in the international level. But i cannot lie, this happens also in judo, like with newaza(ground fight) and leg takedows.
      It's just that the video shows the desinterest or lack of interest in other technics, in amateur wrestling. I hope that the professional got more diversity, isn't it?

      They're both very similar since grappling is an art that pretty much every civilization has developed individually. But judo scores were formed based on which fighter would have died if the competitors were warriors on the battlefield. So judo focuses on the takedowns along with submissions, while wrestling focuses on takedowns and pins.
      Many who practice judo focus mainly on takedowns though, while paying little attention to the ground game, since a clean takedown is automatically a win in an official judo competition.

    Judo needs to have no gi tournaments!

      I appreciate the feedback… but if Judo was no gi, it wouldn’t be Judo!

      @Knauf Judo I disagree. What makes Judo unique among grappling martial arts is if you score a clean takedown it counts as an automatic win. In wrestling, you just get points, and in BJJ it doesn't mean anything. The gi isn't what makes judo unique BJJ and Sambo are both done in gis.

      @@millennialwatchman6703 Judo gripping or Kumi-kata, is a huge part of the sport, especially at the higher levels.
      The better gripper had a huge advantage over someone less skilled and often decides the outcome.
      Yes, Judo is about the throwing but superior gripping is what sets is all up.
      Without gripping it certainly would not be that same sport.

      @Knauf Judo Wouldn't you say the same thing regarding BJJ? Are BJJ gi and no gi two totally different sports? So what if they are? If anything, I'd say that's all the more reason why Judo should have no gi. Because if someone attacks you on the street, unless they're wearing a jacket, which they probably won't be, you're going to have to use different tactics in order to throw them. In my opinion, that's what the purpose of martial arts should be: self-defence.

      Let’s take dribbling out of basketball or base running out of baseball…….. you’re making an entirely different sport by taking away a critical part or the sport.
      I you do not understand kumi-kata, you do not understand Judo.
