I think Greco is one of the best forms of takedowns for self defense. Who wants to drop in and shoot a double on concrete, linoleum, pavement, etc. That detail about stepping through the legs. I will definitely be trying that.
Judo is japan who copy paste wrestling which was invented by greeks roman 2500 years ago Then they adapt it to their taste For judokas like to fight in straight stand up position and the thick clothes and your grip to that clothes is so crucial in fight 😆
@@mathewvanostin7118 Judo is still very good in a real street fight because 90 percent of the time people wear clothes like shirts, jackets, pants, belts, hoodies, etc. Being knowledgeable about clothing grips and how to throw someone by their clothes is very advantageous in a fight.
@@_penguin_9946 my friend the judo clothes is very thick. Easy to grab. Dont slip. Material is enhanced for good grip. And is resistant to pressure Normal clothes its not gonna give you good grip and it will slip a lot Also you gonna get strike to head if both your hands are on close. Its not the smart behaviour in self defence
Im an old guy, wrestled in the 70's 80's high school & college.. no videos back then, did some coaching in 2008-2014 had to learn so many new techniques and it's still evolving, amazing what you can learn watching TH-cam.
Same here. I wrestled and played judo during those same years. My hight school coaches had no wrestling experience. We basically taught each other. I went to a Dan Gable camp one summer and suddenly was beating everyone. I wish we had these videos. (I also wish we had more than 3 TV channels, VCRs, cell phones, central air conditioning, cars that weren't Pintos, etc)
@@patrickheath5011 Pinto lol, had a college rommate that had one we went to a lot of parties in that thing, and 3 tv channels,,,, ring the dinner bell and answering machines. In wrestling had problems with leg riders in high school my coach said tripod and shake them off... never worked, but it was all he knew.
Man this is EXACTLY what I needed. I'm a rusty old Greco boy doing BJJ in his late 30s, this is right down my alley. Thanks Jeff! Much love from Australia!
Late 30’s suck!! I got injured after 10 months of consistent bjj. Slowly getting back to the gym to build up strength and endurance before getting back to the academy. Good luck buddy
I have 23 years of wrestling experience nad 9 years of BJJ experience (brown belt). This is such great content. I have only been able to learn from greco experts a few times, and this was some of the best instruction I've seen. Thanks!
i am wrestler who also is a blue belt in bjj, and people always ask me what shots they should know etc, and i always say when i do bjj im using mostly greco for my stand up , it makes more sense to me. I dont feel like im sacrificing my neck to do a take-down. definitely gonna try this combo this week. keep up the good work.
That was truly excellent. Clearly explained but without overcomplicating it or using any jargon, i feel like i could go and practice this with a partner now without being confused what i'm supposed to do. Get this man back on as often as possible.
We call it pulling the bull. Works in a lot of clinch scenarios. Same as wrestling down a bull, keep the head pinned flat against either shoulder or chest and look to trip in the direction they're looking. Super glad to see a video on this from high level competition
I love this because it's a nice and simple attack, rather than something that really relies on reacting to an opponent. I don't exactly have many years of grappling, and I'm taking up MMA. While I have over a decade of striking, I barely have 1 year grappling, and at my age, it is hard to find takedown instruction in person, so the easier it is to replicate from a video, the better! Thank you much.
Am I too old - I'm 53 - to learn Greco-Roman wrestling? It seems like an incredible way to stay in shape and learn a fantastic combat martial art. Thank you!:)
Coming from combat sambo, however now in a mma gym based on bjj, muay thai, and tkd, i can say that greco roman wrestling is thee most important art when it comes to transitioning from standing to ground. Some laugh at me when i say this. I train with 2 giys that also come from the same sambo gym, neighter go for shots. Its all greco roman tactics and well as no gi judo. Their take down stats are in the %90s at the new gym. Many guys cry some names out thatbare famous in sambo when it comes to wrestling when they ask why theu dont go for shots. Things work differently for different people. Its just how it is. Great material, thanks for sharing. Im a ways away frok my buddy i train with. He has almost 30 years of sambo however.
@Anthony-nd7ld self defense is a legal term. I regards to an altercation I can't avoid on the streets, I'd say that keeping my shoes toes, mind sharp, and wrestling game alot more important. I use to bounce. Iv had enough of those. Yes, I'd say anything, even the wall flowers of mma like judo and taekdwondo together wpuod be great for altercations that can't be avoided aslong as theirs live sparring and grappling. I don't believe any art is better than the other, aslong as it's practiced realistically. That's why I'd put a dive of an mma gym that spars responsibly, but reasonably over any pro bjj gym that only wears gis, never does takedowns, and has knee and butt rash. Are they still dangerous on the ground, probably, but if the guys has a decent base on wrestling and any striking art, hel probably still win. Same goes for da streetz I suppose.
@@Xzontyr i definitively agree with you, I personally used to do kick boxing and just with low kick clinch and front kick was enough to keep distance. I asked about sambo because they literally mix wrestling striking with apparently wonderful takedown level and headbutt on top of that. Personally police officers suggested me to use wrestling in a case of self défense because of controlling someone without hurting so regarding the law it’s very beneficial . Thanks for your answer
Man I'm happy to see that this channel has gotten a lot more momentum. Last I checked it had 2k subs and it's now at 50k. You deserve all the success for this great content!

Thank you for this insight. I used to for many years believed that Greco-Roman was little more than no-gi Judo minus submissions but the more I watch GR the more I noticed the differences in footwork and head movement and alignment which differ greatly from Judo and Tai Chi's more upright focused postures.
That video opened a new world for me, i knew some of those takedown but i spent a lot of energy in closing them because i was letting too space to my opponent, now with this kind of control may be a lot easier to work. Thank you

Looks easy, but doing that to a grown man who doesn't want to go down and fights back is a different story! Greco wrestlers deserve all the respect in the world, probably the most difficult form of grappling at a high level.
i've tried this and found success, definitely works ty :) you can also experiment throwing off the underhook when they turn around since i feel it's harder to escape from, using the overhook as shown in the video if they have a particularly strong whizzer. has worked well in my experience
So I typically keep a distance. When people want a connection I don't give it and I usually look for double leg first or single second. If someone is relentlessly seeking a connection I will engage into a clinch and this will be the perfect tool for that phase. Snap down is my go to clinch, but this ensures a better control and option chain. Thanks!
Damn fine good work done here. Very technical and with overwhelming brute force enabled whenever a new opportunity arises in the moment. A very awesome video

Would be good to combine with muay thai. Clinch work is underrated in fights. Thai boxers like to trip from the clinch.
Just remember that the double leg is so effective that judo banned it from competition.
