    Those trows were just sublime! The closest thing to this we've seen in the octagon, as far as I can remember, was Ronda converting Miesha's shots into Judo throws beautifully. One sided as hse is, her Judo has always been top-notch.
    Another advantage of these kind of throws I can see for MMA fighter is that the majority of them seem to land in a side control or even mount, which saves you the trouble of guard-passing.

    Jason undertands wrestling because he's also a wrestler. It's not always a "versus" mentality that we benefit from. Too many people have a pseudo-competitive mind about everything, including information and how to learn, or what "Style" they are. It's been exhausting for me to hear it all these years. If a Judoka simply applies Judo against wrestling, and never wrestled, they're typically going to have some success and some failure. When I trained with a world-class Judoka from Morocco at the Jiu-jitsu school I attended in Vegas, I was surprised at how often he could lure me into a stance I don't like to use and trip me, but also surprised at how often I tangled and ruined his throws and ended up on his back. It went back and forth, and I was just a fairly decent wrestler during high school in the 80's, so well past my prime, he was a few years past his. Anyway, my wrestling sometimes included being not far away from where Jason competed, in the middle-upstate N.Y. area overlapping some of the same years. It's decent wrestling up there. In N.Y., if you don't always end up on top, you're going to find somebody who keeps your face in the mat and rides legs, spirals, etc... until you are tortured. Jason had to make sure he knew how to get out of there AND keep people down if he wanted, and though Judo may help with that, he no doubt learned from other tough wrestlers in the Albany and surrounding areas. I mostly wrestled in the "souther tier" area, near the PA. border and it's not easy there either. I wish I had trained with Jason to get even a small fraction of how good he was, then I would have had extra game on the feet. At least I had a decent near-ankle level shot that caught people flat footed and a few other quick picks etc... but not enough to get me to the finals. Great footage! Thanks for showing us the video.

    Having practiced Judo for 15 years as a kid, I always get excited when I see Judo in MMA. I hope this video is eye opening to many young fighters, and we will get to see more Judo moves having the better of wrestlers in times to come. The key to Jason Morris' success is the modified hand grip he has had to perfect in a no-gui situation. The rest of the techniques are the same - and aren't they spectacular!

    • @jameshardenbeastmode
      @jameshardenbeastmode 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes that really is the only obstacle that stands in the way for Judoka interested in MMA. In my opinion the first to ever modify the grips successfully in MMA was Karo parisyan, if you want to see good Judo in MMA look up him and Rick Hawn.

    • @David-tp7sr
      @David-tp7sr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know Parysyan and I will look up Rick Hawn. The question is, has Judo been under utilized in MMA so far, or, at an even skill level, does wrestling really cancel out Judo? I believe (and hope) that it is the former. I believe wrestling has been so dominant because Americans practice it but there exists other effective styles of bringing your opponent down to the ground and controlling him.

    Ad Santel went to Japan and became the Judo world champion. He was a Catch Wrestler in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Every no-gi Judo throw is in freestyle and CACC wrestling. Most wrestling throws are in Judo as well this Cross pollination happened when Japanese jiu-jitsu practitioners fought Catch Wrestlers in the late 19th century. You will find in many CACC manuals of the time Jiu-jitsu chokes and arm locks clearly labeled as such. CACC is a true hybrid system.

    Hi Firas
    First of let me start out by saying how much I enjoy your youtube videos. Hope you keep them coming. I'm sure you are very busy, but I would like to ask what are your thoughts on Cerrone and his corner men during his fight vs Masvidal. Specifically, after he was knocked down at the end of the first round. In between rounds he clearly looked dazed and out of it at least to me. Had you been in his corner would you have stopped the fight or not, and why? Also have you ever been in a similar situation and what would it take for you to stop the fight on behalf of your fighter and his safety? It is hard to gauge how often this happens in UFC/MMA since throwing the towel seems to be more of a boxing thing. I have seen very few fights stopped between rounds in the UFC in the last 5 years of watching UFC fights, and when it does happen it is hard to tell whether it was stop by a doctor, referee, the fighters corner or even the fighter himself. Is this something you discuss with your fighters, and how might a conversation like that go? I ask because there doesn't seems to be a lot discussion on this subject in mma circles, at least not in depth. The reason I ask this now is, I thought the chance of seeing a corner stick their neck out to stop a fight and protect their fighter was as good as we will see. The reason I say this it seems fairly obvious that there is a culture in mma that fighters have to appear extremely tough and don't give up under any circumstance and the coaches/corner men are unwilling to stop fights so as not to upset their fighters.I say this because the corner men Jackson/Wicklejohn are two of the most respected in mma, Cerrone seems like one of the more easy going fighters in the UFC, they have long standing relationship between the three of them and the risk of Cerrone leaving their camp and them incurring a financial loss or damaging their friendship was minimal relatively speaking. And still we didn't see a stoppage. I understand that their are more reasons why a corner wouldn't stop a fight. One of the reasons I ask you these questions is that you are in a very unique position at least when it comes to high profile and highly respected coaches. You have been around for a long time and have had many different relationships with many fighters, a close relationship with arguably the best UFC fighter of all time, the likes of Rory, now your own brother and fighters that you haven't yet developed a personal relationship with (I recently watched the Tristar Gym series from FightNetwork). How might all these contrasting relationships and/or other factors influence your consideration/decision to stop a fight? I understand you are a bit of a philosopher and you might have some thoughts to add to this important and under discussed subject.

      On concrete? Probably not. Of equal skill levels on padded floor? easily. Wrestlers don't train submissions so they put themselves into bad positions without knowing the defense needed, and judoka due to ruleset only know ground game very shallow. Give the BJJ fighter time to work and they'll walk through both

      judo competitors indeed are better than most people think at newaza, but they are very specialized. They DO train to hold or sub from the top, specially following a throw so from a favourable position, but they basically never train guard (i've actually met people who have no idea what the guard is!), and certainly train no offense at all form the guard as usually the moment you close your guard the referee breaks the so-called "inaction", in olympic judo. In fact, their go-to defense is usually to just turtle on the mat until the attacker gives up or the referee break.

      Not quite. As awesome as Jason Morris is, and I agree with coach Zahabi that his approach to no-gi standing is unique and well worth learning, we also have to keep things in perspective. Most of the footage here is from in-state competitions in the state of New York in the 1980s and early 90s. Notice how tall everyone is standing, which fits Morris's style perfectly. Now maybe he is just really good at tying his opponents up in a way that forces them to wrestle more upright, but I don't think that is the entire reason. People just used to wrestle that way.
      Over the years the increasing importance of the leg attack game in wrestling has led to lower and lower stances, it's actually getting to the point of being a bit ridiculous these days how shot-oriented high school and college wrestling is. Entering a college-level tournament today and expecting to toss people would be a lot more difficult for a judoka simply because they would be forced to grapple out of an extremely crouched over stance they are not at all comfortable with.

      Einar Friðgeirs I agree. That extreme low stance if today is hard to deal with. I wrestled for two seasons in high school back in the mid nineties and upper body wrestling was on it's way out then. Snap downs, singles, doubles, and front headlocks were the focus because doing any shoulder, foot sweep or hip throw was not only hard to pull off but was easy to counter.

    i always prefered judo over wrestling/jiujitsu as a grappling base. prolly best for grip, hip strength and throws u dont learn from other arts. and judo schools are very common and easier to find than good jiujitsu schools or even wrestling. well at least where i live:p

    if he were to try the most highlighted throw on olympic level wrestlers he would be lifted up off the floor and suplexed, that style of throw only works in split second scrambles not with a guy completely in control but not competent enough to lift and suplex.

      mondehet you clearly didnt see hes stopping the suplex by grapevinning the throw so he can not be lifted..try rewatching without your ego.

      no, he's either doing it in split second scrambles which i acknowledged it being a good move for OR he is in a position to be easily lifted off the ground (opponents arms locked around his body whilst both in upright stance) which completely stops him from throwing.... my issue with this video is the title being judo vs wrestling and focusing on a state champion, not that being a state champion isn't good but lets be honest about what we're watching and that is a much much lower level of wrestling to what is at the elite level.

    Great video but the Judo vs Wrestling title makes this look like some kind of crummy art vs art video that litters youtube. This is much more than that.,
