Just found your channel, thanks so much for posting! I am much more interested in 'smaller' channels, real people so to speak. What a gem. I really want to try and understand who it is I watch, learn a little something about the people I pay attention to, so I started with the hand full of videos marking out your years, first ones first... My perception of you is that you are quite open and honest, I really appreciate that. My real people comment shows my bias I suppose. This is the next video I watched after those - quite a different tenor! So excited about your trip ; -). Excellent!!! As I watch more I hope to find that you had a wonderful time, had some adventures, learned a thing or two, and met some interesting people. Keep the shiny side up, thank you again for sharing, can't wait to join you on your journey and see what you find along the way...
Hi Laura: I’m an old guy that has been riding for more years than I care to recount. For so many of those years, especially on the long trips, I rode in the cold just depending on leather and layers. Then, finally, I purchased a heated vest. It was a game changer! You definitely should get one. I have found that if my core is warm, the rest of me seems warmer too. Buy one that comes with a pigtail that connects to your battery and sticks out from under your seat. Easy to install and you can dial in how much heat you want. It will take your stress about riding in the cold down a few notches. Do it. You’ll wonder how you ever did without it. Best wishes, keep riding and be safe!
Yeah, heated gear is an investment but well worth it with the temps she thinks she will be riding in. Done right, the gear can be lighter and less bulky as well. Enjoy your trip. Audio sounded great.
You are amazing, you inspired me to do the same,I’m Canadian also from Quebec,I’m thinking about taking 6 months off for the winter and hit the road for the sun ☀️
I bought a heated jacket on Amazon & it is a game changer without having to bundle up for a ride. My advice is don't push yourself too hard & take plenty of breaks on your trip. Be careful
I agree with the suggestions about heated gear. As we get older the cold is more of a challenge when riding. I also like heavy flannel lined jeans. They keep your legs warm and do not flap at speed.
I’m going to look into a heated jacket for my next trip. It would (hopefully) save me from wearing the nine shirts I’ve had to at some points, haha!! Thank you for the suggestion!
No Doubts! I made it from Toronto to LA and Toronto to Yukon/Alaska working through the plans in much the same way you are. Once, I thought cold and wet on a bicycle was miserable, then I was cold and wet on a motorcycle. Keep Dry - Keep Warm. Finally, watch the gas in Death Valley - always assume the next gas station might be closed.
I'm looking forward to your trip installments starting! I see you're on the road if it's not to late try to check out Hoover Dam it is quite interesting.. Also I don't know which was cuter you Nerding out about a microphone or that quick change montage of Heart concert T-shirts😊 Ann and Nancy would be Proud!
Hello Laura, I have ridden the same areas numerous times. You have a great ride planned and are bound to have an enjoyable experience riding through NM, AZ and CA. A base layer of Under Armour compression-fit top and bottom, thin fleece jacket, heated vest, outer jacket, three layers of thin wools socks, and insulated gloves and I was comfortable even when riding through Yellowstone National Park when it was -12C. A rain jacket and rain pants can also do double-duty as a wind breaker to help keep out cold drafts. Just keeping the wind off of your extremities can do wonders for your comfort. Hands and feet are the first to suffer the effects of cold. Hand guards and engine guard covers are a great deal more effective at mitigating the chilling effect of wind on hands and feet than merely gloves and socks alone. Wishing you a joyful and spirit expanding experience on your epic motorcycle adventure. "🎼Get your motor runnin'........
Wow Laura, You are so good at telling your exciting story while sharing your expectations for the trip, that it’s obvious you have some special abilities on the screen! Think about that, girl.. And MAN, you have someting to tell! Your stress is natural, its your survival instinct. I think your followers on this channel feel the same thing while prep for their trips! Some of us wake up at night “what have I forgotten”? By the way, thanks for the entertainment, that was really cool
Hi, Laura. The cold sucks, most of the time, but you have to do a couple things, to get through it. You can embrace it, and you can dress for it. If you embrace it, you need to relax your body, otherwise you'll be cold and have tense muscles. I recommend that you get some long Johns. I got some from Academy. They're Magellan brand. They make them for different temperature ranges. I am good in those, with my chaps down to the 20s (F°) and maybe the teens. I have some Rocky brand sweater-like fabric long Johns that I wear over the others, sometimes. I like to wear a combination of thick and thin cold weather gear, so I switch things out, for the best warmth, at the moment. The right gloves are really important. I haven't found anything that keep my hands from getting cold, eventually. That's why I want to get and recommend Memphis Shades handguards. That and a good windshield is key. I recommend that you get the Road Warrior fairing, so you can switch out the windshield, if you're getting too much wind. They look good, too. Definitely get some fuel bottles or a big gas can. I know that you had a problem with your battery, or maybe it was your charging system. You should get a portable jump starter. And tire pressure is very important, not just for mileage, but for traction. You could have a wreck, if it's too low. I recommend getting a portable air pump. I bought a Lexin air pump from Cycle Gear. Bungie cords and ratchet straps could come in very handy. Carry some basic tools and oil, too. If you wear a half shell helmet, or even a full face helmet, you should get some yellow safety glasses, to see better at night. For when it rains, you should have some rain gear, and if you have leather boots, you might want to coat them in mink oil, if they aren't already waterproof. Well, I'll leave you, with that. I hope that and other people's advice helps you have the best trip.
Thank you so much for your detailed comment! I didn’t think of the hand guards… they sure would be a huge help. I’ve been having some issues with frozen fingers on this ride so far. I suppose that I’ve learned the hard way that the heated hand grips only feel warm above a certain temperature 😅. I also didn’t consider tire pressure. Funny enough an hour or two after I read your comment, I found a pressure gauge reader on the highway when I pulled over to warm up… The timing was impeccable! So thank you for the recommendation, and I’ve been keeping an eye on it!
Anxious to hear how the Death Valley trip tested you. I have no doubt, you passed the test. Looking forward to the full posts. Your videos are always entertaining and, most importantly, enchanting. You are a great story teller. Always believable. Never overstated.
Have a blast on your trip Laura! You’re a natural on video; audio was great by the way. Bathroom hot air hand driers are life savers when freezing your butt 😂 You’ll love AZ
Hi Laura. The costs for motels and camping are getting pretty pricey these days as well as fuel costs. I live in Sechelt BC and the price right now is $1.919 a litre for regular, a lot more for Premium. I want to take my HD across Canada and the US but I will have to wait until Priminister Castro and Biden are turfed out. I'm 71 years now so I don't have a lot of time lived. Looking forward to you next adventure in Arizona.
$1.91 for regular fuel?! That’s crazy! Here I was complaining about $1.58 back home… And you’re right about the cost of motels… even camping! I recall paying over $100 to set up my tent on some gravel in the Florida Keys. And prices never drop… they just keep rising 😢
Wow, you rode through Yellowstone at -12°? That’s no small feat! I’ve been layering up but I wish I had thought of hand guards as you’ve mentioned- that sounds like a really good idea! I’m going to have to look into that. Thank you for your suggestions! 🎼 head out on the highwayyyyy 🎼 Edit: my comment is appearing as if it’s crossed out at some points. I’m not sure why or how to fix it. It’s not intentional!
I was in Death Valley in the beginning of April, stayed there for a few nights so I could ride around the area as much as possible. Did you get to the Moving Rocks? I had to go through 27 miles of 'washboard roads', twice because the other end was closed. Anyway, I suggest wearing your rain gear to help deflect the 'wind chill' while riding. If you keep your core warm, it'll make your ride more pleasant.
You have so much fun on your Sporty. Don’t wear so many layers, it minimizes freedom of movement. You wear great gear. And you’re very meticulous about what you do. Have a great ride!!!! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🙏🏻🙏🏻 Be Safe.
Well said! There’s been a few points where I’ve had to wear NINE SHIRTS under my jacket. Can you believe it?!?!? Not only do I look like the Michelin man, but I’ve had points where I could barely bend my arms from the layers. This trip has been wild! Amazing for sure, but wild!
Hi Laura another enjoyable video Thank you Being an older guy I grew up listening to Rock & the Blues still do I saw Heart many years ago amazing band for sure I saw some suggestions of heated gear which is a good idea I think a heated vest & gloves would be great I dont have any heated gear myself but Im looking into it Otherwise I hope you have a great amazing trip enjoy everything you encounter life is to short not to Looking forward to your videos Be Safe Take Care 😎😎
Thank you! I really should have picked up some heated gear… particularly heated gloves. My fingers have been frozen at some points! Other than that, I’ve been wearing several layers and I’ve been able to stay pretty warm for most of the ride. 😊
Thank you! Believe it or not, I’ve had to wear NINE SHIRTS under my riding jacket at some points. NINE!!! Thankfully they’re keeping me cozy, but it sure is wild.
Hi Laure, hope the trip is going well and living up to your dreams. Its good when you can get to do things you've dreamt about, life is short enjoy it while you can. I to hate riding in the cold and in the wet to be fare which in the uk is quite often. In my teens I just used to get on with it and when it was really cold line my jacket and trousers with newspaper, it has great insulating properties but you do look like a tramp if you take your jacket of. I also wear leather mittens in the winter rather than fingered gloves, they keep your hands much warmer. I to get stressed if im about to make a large purchase or undertake a longer journey to the point it can stop me from going. The mic is so much better. Can I ask a personal question, what does your mum think about your travels by bike? Even now at my age my mum doesnt like my doing long journeys by motorcycle or bicycle, I do some cycle touring when time allows, but I guess its a mothers prerogative to worry. Ive decided to start a business selling hearing aids to pirates. Im going to charge a buccaneer. Two friends were talking and one said maybe you need hearing aids. Maybe you should think about getting hearing test. The other person said, why would I need a hairy chest. Patient; Doctor I need help Doctor; what can I do for you? Patient; well I keep farting silently, and I dont know why. Doctor: Well maybe first thing first, we should check your hearing out. Dont worry im ear all week plenty more to come 😂
Your comment made my day and put a huge smile on my face, thank you! Newspapers for insulation, eh? Honestly, I love the sound of that! I’m all for economical ways of staying warm and I can’t wait to try it out! I really appreciate the suggestion. My mum is not too fond of my adventures. Neither is my father, but he still helps me out regardless, and makes suggestions which is helpful! I can understand where they’re coming from and that they mean well, but sometimes it can be difficult pushing through the discouragement and doubt. But again, I can understand that they’re just worried. 😅 P.s: loved the jokes, I’m *hear* for it! I sure got a kick out of them.
Ladies stockings are also quite good for keeping legs warmer. Dont ask how I know. Obviously you need to wear your jeans over the top or it may look a little odd 🤭 no need for the suspenders tho 🤣

Arizona has some of the best riding! It’s always riding season here. When it’s hot in Phoenix, we ride north. When it’s cold up north, we stay south.
