Personally I bought the 14" MBP with all the cores working, 16GB, and a 1TB drive. I'm extremely happy with this purchase but I could have probably bought the base model MBP and been fine. That being said, I'd prefer the M1 13" MBP in the 14" chassis. I think if they build that machine, it'd be a best seller for Apple, especially with the incredible battery life it would have.
@@NoOne-uh9vu Disagree. I’ve gone from 15” late 2013 MB Pro which is actually BIGGER than my new 16 M1 Pro. Again, my 16 is SMALLER than my previous 15… so it’s perfect.
@@dac00007 I wasn't comparing it to the old versions I was comparing the 2021 versions with themselves and I find the 16" way too HEAVY (not big). And yes its heavier than the previews iteration too. Also its smaller by maybe 1.5mm or (if at all) so that is negligible. A current version 15" would be way smaller AND lighter
14" with the 16 core M1Pro is the sweet spot. It's been an absolutely amazing machine for me, getting me through entire work days without needing to charge, and is always cool and quiet, while also being nice and portable to take on the go to school or the office. Gives me a pretty decent gaming experience as well.
I've just buy the basic 14" M1 Pro and I was watching the video and thinking "OMG I was wrong?" but I think that those thermal issues are not present with the M1 Pro.. as you say the sweet spot for the 14" probably are the M1 Pro chips and the 32 core M1 MAX is too much.
I've decided to get the base 14" because all the time I would have saved with a more expensive model I've already spent watching comparison videos dozens of times just to figure out which one I should get. 😅
For me it is incredible that a 14” can have this power, bigger ones will always be superior at least in battery and cooling but without the portability. 14” is the king for me
@@MarmaladeSally it’s just personal preference. I had a 16” and if my primary use was using it on a table, desk or other hard surface, it would be the perfect choice for me. I use my desktop if I’m at my desk. I use my MacBook primarily while laying on the couch, on a plane, or while holding it with one hand. The 16” was too large for me, for others it’s perfect. I’ve since picked up a 14” and I love it.
Bought a 16" m1 pro and returned it for a 14" M1 pro. No regrets on that decision. I have it docked most of the time but when I want to use it on my bed or in different rooms, the 16 inch was just too cumbersome. The speakers, screen and battery life on the 16 inch was fantastic but couldn't outweigh the size and weight imo.
That 16 inch screen is nice… but 14 inch is so much easier to live with as an on-the-go daily use machine. I don’t think you can really go to wrong with the current line-up.
I find the argument that a 16 inch laptop is “too big for traveling on airplanes“ to be rather silly. Very few people spend enough time on an actual plane to have that be enough of an issue to give up the better capabilities, larger screen, better cooling, better battery life that the bigger laptop offers. Having a better laptop for the 99% of the time you are at home, in an office, or at a table seems like the better choice.
Exactly what I was thinking. Especially in the current state of airline’s constant cancellations, you’re going to spend three times longer waiting for your flight, than actually on the flight. All the more reason to get the 16”. I ordered the almost maxed version with a 4TB, I’m sure this will be my computer for many years to come.
I think like Jason Levine said below, it really depends on how much you plan on using the macbook on a plane. More broadly speaking, however, I completely agree with your position on it. The bigger screen and better capabilities, seem to outweigh the benefits of a more compact size.
I chose the 14" because I use my laptops docked at home. I need it to be portable on the go. I am also only getting the M1 Pro. If I want the M1 Max, I will surely get the 16".

I know you keep saying "14 inch Macbook", but I'm pretty sure all of these things only apply (in any meaningful way) to your max specced 14 inch vs a similar 16 inch. Compare the 24 core versions, and you don't get nearly as much difference. Most of us-even professional video editors-are not going max specs this time around, so I think it’s important to specify
When you have the 16" for 2 months, then you may want the 14" again :) I have the 14" - 24 core model, and very happy with it! I debated getting the 16", but when I picked one up IRL I realized it was larger/heavier than I wanted for portability.
Exactly the same - I went into an Apple Store to check out the 14" and the 16", expecting to buy the 16", and completely changed my mind when I held the 16" IRL. Too big and too heavy for me. I got the 14" instead and really love it. Definitely the best choice for me.
The 16 inch and 14 inch have the same font size.....unless you need to do intense video editing or coding without a monitor there is no need to go for the 16 inch
2 months ago I was struggling about what to choose and your videos really helped a lot! With your videos it became clear that 16" M1Pro 16Gb 1Tb version is just perfect for me and for my purposes there's no need to spend extra for M1Max or 32Gb! Thank you for your great job!
I totally agree. Most of the people have gotten 14", this is kinda a triggering people. I am not saying I want to hear what feels good but I also don't want to hear how 2 machines with different form factors and prices are not the same!! lol
If you are not a pro user, a MacBook Air is more than adequate for you. Hell, even an iPad maybe enough for you if you don't use it for anything productive.
Returned my 14" Pro and got a 16GB/1TB Air instead - I prefer the design of the Air, and the price. Miss the screen a bit, but not enough to make it a keeper.
@@steve5nash Very much so. The Pro has an XDR screen. Jaw dropping quality for films/videos. If the Air had an XDR screen I'd be happy as a pig in poo.
I recently got a 14inch. It’s been an amazing machine. Granted I will admit that I didn’t really need one and the M1 air would have been more than enough. However, considering my last computer was a 2013 MBP this has definitely been an upgrade
I can draw a common sentiment from different tech reviewers that getting M1 Max in the 14" form is regrettable... but a 14" M1 Pro is of great value. As a PhD student, I have no regrets buying the 14" M1 Pro config (10cCPU/16cGPU/1TB SSD). Priorities-wise, portability is "close to being equal" with power. I use it for statistical programming, spectral data analysis (chemometrics), and other productivity apps/tasks. Given what I paid for: 3500AU$, it's so portable, so powerful, battery life is decent, I cannot hear the fan, screen real estate is better than 13", speakers and mic are above average, and I don't really need dongles doing presentations or connecting to external monitors...😅 👍🏼 👌🏼 It's actually close to perfect...👍🏼 👌🏼 😊
I got a maxed out 16 Max to replace iMac Pro and a std 14 M1 Pro for travel and small table coffee shops. With Intel becoming an Apple has-been, I couldn’t be happier.
As another PhD candidate, I also got the 10C/16C/1TB 14” to run SeqGeq, FlowJow, R, and my photography hobby. I’m sure it’ll last through the >3yrs I have left in my program and a postdoc
Exactly. Waiting for my 14”/M1Pro/10C/32gb/2TB model to arrive. I edit in Lightroom and FCPX and from watching so many reviews it seems like this is the sweet spot for me. The issues in comparison come up when (as you mentioned) you get a 14” M1 Max. Anyway, glad you brought this up. 😎👍🏼
As someone who used to carry around a 15.6" laptop weighing 2.5kgs, I just cannot justify carrying around an even bigger laptop. The 14" IMO is near perfect; yes the battery isn't quite as good as the 16", but it's still way better than most other laptops out there. Portability for me is extremely important for a laptop, if I want power I use a desktop PC. I even went into an Apple store to compare both the 16" and 14" and all it did was confirm my theory that the 16" is just way too large and heavy to be considered portable. In the end I went for a 14" MBP with the 10c/16c M1 Pro chip, 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD. Could not be happier with this choice :)
Hi this is the exact model I am coming around from watching abd reviewing specs. Would you happen to know if this configuration will manage large audio production logic pro x and graphic design software like photoshop and figma? Thanks!
@@maumex I think for large projects you'll want the 32GB of ram configuration, as long as you get the highest end M1 Pro (or lowest end Max) model, I think you'll be fine :)
@@Dunestorm333 Yes. I was thinking the 14'' Apple M1 Pro with 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine with 32 GB Ram. I am tempted to get the 16'' but I would love to maintain portability.
@@maumex Yes the 16" does have a better battery life, but I find it too heavy and bulky to carry. I think the 14" version is the perfect size, especially since the notch gives you extra vertical space.
The extra weight of my 16" M1 Max MBP does not bother me. I opted for the highest performance configuration possible. The only thing I compromised on was the SSD. 2TB of SSD is sufficient for my needs. I love my M1 Max so much, I named my new 9 week old puppy Max.
I went the route of getting an M1 air base for anything needing extreme portability, and the base m1 pro 16" (With 1TB upgrade) for anything requiring a large amount of performance. Having the 2 devices was still cheaper than maxing out either of the Macbook Pro's. Pretty happy.
You just made me feel even better about going with the 16”. As soon as I saw your comparison of the fan sizes, I had a feeling that performance wouldn’t be equal. Especially given the thermal issues Apple has had in the past.
Had my 14" 10 core w/ 32GB for 3 months. I swear to god, never have heard the fans. No, I don't do video editing, but I do use this computer as a graphics professional (for my actual job, not simply watching videos) and even with very large Photoshop, Illustrator, and Lightroom files, its completely silent. At the end of the day, nobody can go wrong. Someone either needs a large screen for their workflow, or prefers a smaller footprint.
@@NOT_A_TOP_FAN yeah same, I have the base 14" model, have 50-60 tabs open and I run 5-6 Docker containers right now, haven't heard any noise whatsoever. Also, it simply does not get that hot. Comparing to 16" intel 2020 mac I had prior to this, it was like a plane takeoff as soon as I started running Docker and it was burning.
@@NOT_A_TOP_FAN Hello. What do you recommend? I'm a photographer shooting with high res RAW files. My 2015 Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD runs slower than I would like with Lightroom CC and Photoshop. Do you think the base config would be sufficient? Thanks!
Thanks for all the vids Max!! They have all been great. I got the maxed out 16” and you made me second guess myself over and over, but I like the bigger screen and have always had a 15-16” machine and the screen size for the graphics work I do was important to me. The battery life was also top priority. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase and during a recent flight I used my 16 with no trouble, battery lasted no problem.
16 inch M1 Pro 32/1Tb - the only model I seriously considered. Additional screen size is a real plus. Don’t need Max level performance, would rather put my $$ into more unified memory. This beast should last me a VERY long time. Disclaimer: I NEVER travel by air, so size and weight are less of a consideration. The 16 inch model fits just fine in my Waterfield Sutter Slim backpack, even if I also carry a 12.9 inch iPad Pro and an iPad mini. And despite my small stature, it remains easy to haul all of that at the same time. Why would I chose a 14 inch screen with all the other compromises you mentioned (shorter battery life, hampered cooling, thermal throttling), especially since the cost difference is negligible?
@@Weird_Quests Not sure how large your camera is. What I do know is that the folks at Waterfield give accurate answers when asked this type of question. And I can tell you that my ancient digital SLR (a Canon Digital Rebel XTI with kit lens attached) has no trouble fitting in it, leaving plenty of room for my 16 inch MBP as well. I didn’t confirm that last part by putting the Mac in the case but there certainly seems to be plenty of room for both the camera and the MBP-and then some. There’s also a lot of room left above the camera for other accessories. Hope this helps.
@@mpetrides I have asked Waterfield Designs, but they just mention that it should fit and give me the dimensions. So thank you for commenting as I've been eyeing a couple of their bags for professional day-to-day use, but also want to be able to pop in my camera and one lens too. Really appreciated :D
I went with the 14" inch 24-Core M1 Max 64GB, 2TB version. I came to that decision because of its portability mixed with its power and better balance of power/battery consumption. Yes the 16" had few things over the 14", for instance, the smaller screen real-estate for editing, but I found this almost none existing when setting the screen resolution on 'More Space' And battery life..? The 24-Core M1 Max gives me more battery life than the 32” core version and when running in ‘Low Power Mode” it tugs along even more, (getting close to the 16” inch 32-Core battery at full power) With battery in ‘Low Power Mode” the Raw power stays clearly above the M1 Pro taking nothing away from my ‘editing on the road’ experience. Now especially when it comes to power, it really surprised me how powerful the 14" 24-Core 64GB version is. The first thing I wanted to see, was how it handled Neat-Video.. I often use this Video-Denoising software, so I was particularly fond with the official testing results of the 32-Core M1 Max getting best results of 36 fps with just the GPU. Yet going the 24-Core route made me realize I would probably get a hit in performance. Scaling the GPU core drop of 1/4rd less cores), It was estimated by the Neat-Video that the 24-Core GPU alone would come in around 27 fps.. and the CPU+GPU not much higher. (they weren’t able to test the Binned version, so it was an estimate..) Well to my surprise, the 24-core is really, really well optimized! I ran the same tests (and having chosen the best optimized settings in Neat-Video, I got/get Best GPU only, 33.9 fps..! and CPU+GPU, 33.2 fps.. That’s almost full power! Whilst I have 1/4rd less GPU cores, I only get a 2 fps drop in Denoising processing instead of 9 fps! Now is that because I use 64GB of unified memory?.. It might, as the app said it used 44GB of it. I think with the 24-Core having more head-room to breathe in the 14” body over the 32-Core, it’s wonderful to see it is optimized so much, that I almost lose no graphic power in the most critical aeries/software I work with. The other surprise (at least for me) was Premiere Pro (the Intel version) I still had an older CC 2021 v 15.4.1 (none-native) version of PP on my Mac (as backup) just to see how it runs under Rosetta2. Using the native a7s3 Footage (a 10sec 4K xavc-hs 120fps 10Bit 4.2.0 clip) on a 24fps timeline, slowing it down to 20% speed, I added 3 grading effects on the clip, and then made a multi-shot collage of 20 videos playing together, (with each a having a few seconds delay-start from the one before) It played amazingly well! In half resolution, I had only 17fps dropped frames! --I compared that in the latest FCPX, (at best Performance) with the same clip in the same collage and same settings.. ....it Barely played 10 layers stutter-free! Stuttered the first 10 seconds before it smoothed out. Yes when encoding it to ProRes 422 it ran buttery smooth,.. but that was not what I wanted to compare. It actually surprised me that Premiere Pro, the None-native version! ran the native H.265 a7s3 footage much better! So yeah simply put; .. I’m very happy with the 14” inch.. and with having chosen the right build of it.
how do you think about the 14 inch Pro CPU 32GB 16 core 1 TB version ? Can that handle 15 min documentary with native H.265 a7s3 footage, with AE motiongrahics and slight VFX ? I will export mostly with 1080p configuration , thanks
@@thanhtt-marnguyentien2666 I think it will work with it beautifully, when I run my 14" in Low-power mode, it behaves similarly as the M1 Pro CPU and still somewhat better than the 16-Core GPU. I tested this all out with many layers (12/17 +) of a7s3 4K xavc-hs H.265 120fps 10Bit 4.2.0 footage put together in a multi-cam collage with different timings and color gradings and even some noise reduction and it all played real-time really well, even in Low-Power mode. As long as you don't go that crazy route I think you'll do fine with the Pro CPU 32GB 16 core 1 TB version (all-though I would go with the 2 TB version if you want to future proof your SSD space for future larger projects.) You also named 1080p..... All I did was testing the heaviest 4K a7s3 footage, ...so 1080p will most definitely work perfectly. :) What Editor/NLE are you going to work with? I used Adobe Premiere Pro, but also tested it with FCPX. I found that Adobe Premiere Pro worked much more fluently with playback and scrolling in the time-line (with the native a7s3 footage. Off-course if you convert the footage to Apple ProRes 422, editing (playback speed) will be unmatched in FCPX Haven't tried out Resolve yet, but going to do that soon, as many reviewers have clearly shown it also works marvelously well with a7s3 footage.
@@RaymondKPhotoVideography I mainly use Premiere Pro and AE for my projects. An important factor here is that I have to edit the Introductory video of my company (update every 2-3 months ), which requires the import of several smaller Event projects into the Main BIG Project File ( you know, to drag and copy the already-edited footage). The current Main Big Project File right now is 500mb ( and they gonna be Larger in the future)
Thành (TT-MAR) Nguyễn Tiến I think the 14" M1 Pro 16-Core 32GB will be enough for your type of work. -- 32GB is the minimum you should get for VFX as AE loves Memory.. And since this GPU architecture is using the Unified Memory the 32GB will definitely help.
Max I've watched all your MBP videos, as a matter of fact you made me decide to get the 16” instead of the 14” and the particular configuration of M1 Max, 32 Core GPU and 32gig of Ram, though I wish I had gotten 2TB instead of 1TB. Now I must say that this video is just for the views because you made mention of all these things prior, you knew what you were getting into when you returned your 16” for the 14” so the truth is you aren't really shocked as you say but the content is the content I understand that.
indeed, one month ago you made a video called "Why i've returned the macbook pro 16" and now it's the other way around - Great tests & deep dives overall though, can't deny that
I personally got the 24 core 14", I knew the 16 would realistically be better but I just don't like big laptops even if I don't travel much. I have absolutely no complaints and am not someone who would have debated a windows laptop so for me this was a no brainer to go tot the 24 core to get the media encoders of the Max chip and I had already planned to go to 32gb of Ram anyways so for the extra 200$ I was more than happy with my purchase, what a beast of a laptop!
How does that config perform? That is what I’ve been planning on getting since I like the 14inch form factor but the 24 core model is a more efficient performer in that chassis size.
I initially had the 16” M1 Pro MBP, but the weight was killing me. I didn’t factor in how heavy it would be carrying from room to room as a petite person. I returned the 16” and found an open box Excellent 14” at Best Buy. While the battery life & speakers are noticeably worse than the 16”, both are way better than any Windows laptop I’ve ever tried. I’m honestly in love with the 14”. It actually fits on my lap. It’s trackpad is also smaller, so I’m not accidentally hitting it while I type, which happened ALL the time on the 16” because my hands are so small. I do video editing, but it’s mostly 1080p. Use wise, I probably would’ve been fine with a MacBook Air, but I wanted the ports and extraordinary screen of the new MBPs. BUT for those who need the M1 Max processor, the 16” is a no brainer.
@@transitengineer Thank you! I was feeling really torn if I could get the new M1 Pro MacBook Pro or should wait for the redesigned MacBook Air coming out this Spring. I’m really glad I went with MBP 14 because my other laptop broke.
I have a 17" laptop now so going down to a 16.2" model would not hurt me all that much. Plus, the range of features the 16" has is wonderful. A great laptop for the money even though it is a little expensive for a lot of people including myself since now I'm retired and on a fixed income!
I definitely don't; with the min specs it's been an absolute peach to use. Using it everyday from morning until sleep and never heard the fan turn on once!

Hi, based on all yours reviews regarding MacBook 14" and 16", I chose MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro, with 10/16 core, 16 GB RAM (the differences between 16 and 32 TB was very small in your FCP tests) and 2TB SSD. I travel a lot and use computer for FCP. Except the memory, I think is a honest configuration also based on your current video. All the best!
I bought a 14'' Max 32c/64gb/1tb and love it. It runs games like Black Ops 3 at a constant 100+ FPS. It renders videos like nobody's business. Apps are snappy no matter what Im doing. Is it less powerful than the 16''? For sure, but I never wanted the larger computer, and its not like I'm comparing the two every day. I wanted the most powerful computer in the smallest chassis and that's what I got. Couldn't be happier and will be using this computer for the next 5-10 years easy.
I don’t understand why people use the weight as a knock against the 14 over the 16. It’s a shade over a pound, that is NOT heavy unless you literally have no arms to lift with it.
I have a maxed out 14" and it works great for me. I think one factor that's not considered as much in the comparisons are the specific workload you're putting the laptop under. Yes, if I was constantly doing 8K workloads, I would see a big difference (and I do feel like youtube reviewers tend to over-focus on video since it's something they have to constantly consider). But I use my computer for photography where it's generally much more about the burst speed (since most long jobs gets bottlenecked in IO anyway). Would I enjoy it if they did add the High Power mode? Absolutely. But it's not huge difference for me. What makes a bigger difference for me, though, is that the 14" fits in my smaller camera bag and adds a lot less weight to my on-the-go setup. Between that, the built-in SD reader (which I'm surprised I'm using), and the mini-LED screen, it's an amazing computer to have with you on photography projects. And then I just dock it when I get home (side note, the new OWC TB4 hub is FANTASTIC) and have my monitors, peripherals, and high speed to the NAS.
I got the 16" and at times time I'm like damn this thing is too big. But when doing web development and notice all the real estate I have on the screen it makes me happy. I do wish to try the 14" sometime though to see how my experience would have been with that one.
The 16” is too big. I just won’t max out the m1 Pro, and completely ignore the m1 Max with the 14”. I don’t know if many people need that much power on-the-go. Considering the size difference, I’m not quite sure why Apple made that option available for the 14”. I get it that you want there to seem like the only difference is the size and weight, but I think that’s not feasible, functionally speaking and thermally. Maybe in the M2 Max or M3 Max 🤷♂️

Thank you. Decided to go for the 14" as it is a much more portable form factor. As I have a desktop at home, the heavy lifting can be done there. The 14" is for when I am on the go :)
I currently have the 14 inch 16 core cpu/14c gpu and it’s been an amazing machine. All my photo editing has been effortless while lasting almost 2 days without a charge. Also the speakers still blow me away, I listen to music and watch Netflix with them all the time!
Thank you so much for making these videos!! Since I like the 14 inch size the best for portability (the 16 is huge on the move) but because of your tests, I got the binned pro (8 core) because I'm coming from a dual core i5 so it's still a huge improvement. As I do music production and photo editing though, I specced 32gb of ram and a 2tb ssd. It's honestly amazing for my needs, and saving on the processor helped in upgrading the more important components for me! The battery life is also good enough for me (I can get about 5hrs of 4k video editing on battery life with the low end chip)

Thanks for all of your videos, after debating with myself for months I have the 16” and I absolutely love it. I would have gotten the 14” but I sacrificed the size to get these speakers, battery life and display, I’m super pleased with my choice.
I am super excited that I made the right decision, and that was to wait for these videos. We have three 14" and two 16" at work and the peeps with the 16" keep saying that they barely feel the weight difference (they did have the 2019 16" before). The execs., who got the 14", are also very pleased with the laptop, but hey... do they ever run more than Outlook and their web based CRM tools (just kidding). I am going for the base 16" model. One thing I missed the most, running my Intel based XPS17 on Linux, is the Apple EcoSystem!

People who need to use their laptops while flying got some issues. Let it sit in the bag, take a nap and unplug from your electronics for a change. I still prefer the 14 inch regardless, just because it’s easier to travel with and the screen size is enough for my needs as a DJ
I got the base 16 inch with 1TB and I feel it was a great decision. I definitely think these new MacBook's are worth the money if you need the kind of power they offer.
14" M1 pro is the best deal, Hands down. I barely push the performance to trigger fans. As a student, this is not only an affordable pro machine but also gives the best performance, display and sound at an $1850 price point. Apple care for 16": 400$ and 14": 270$. Cant complain.
the best deal i think would be the macbook air when you dont push the 14" that the fans wont even spin on, the air is not that much slower, the display is good (95% wouldnt even notice the better screen of the pro), sound is ok, super light weight and great battery performance for less then half the price.. save the other half of the money for when the m2 macbook air comes 2023 and you have another gread value deal
@@andreb.1352 Initially I thought so too. I tried building app packages on my friend's m1 air, I noticed a significant performance drop. About the display, after getting used to promotion, now Air feels very choppy. I waited for almost a year before getting this, waiting for m2 was not the option. I feel 14" or 13" M1 will give better returns at the end of their lifecycle as they have fans. Instead of Air, I did consider getting a 13" M1 but it was very early and dev apps were barely supported then. For the same spec 13" M1 16/512GB config, 14" is the way better deal when you add promotion, mini led, added GPU and extra monitor support.

I agree, for just 200 dollars more, 16 inch is a great upgrade and much better value MacBook. Huge immersive display, much better battery life, smooth cool performance, and great speakers, all for just 200 dollars more than 14 inch. One should just buy the 16 inch as the default choice, unless one finds it difficult to lift/use because of size. For example, I find 16 inch to be very comfortable size and feel 14 inch is very small for my productive use, but my wife simply cannot handle the 16 inch size and adores her 13.3 MacBook Pro.
This video came across to me as quite anti-14" 😥. It is a smaller laptop, so you will have some compromises because of that. But it is substantially smaller, lighter and more portable than the 16" and has absolutely stellar performance for it's size. If you are trying to decide which to buy, make SURE you go and see/touch them IRL. The 16" is big and heavy. I went into an Apple Store intending to order the 16" and instead ordered the 14" - it is much more portable. I do not regret this decision at all.
thank you for that bold purchase of the ff. MBPs and that amazing effort to review each one. Definitely these videos help us decide, Keep it up and hoping you will reach that 1m milestone soon
I ordered the 14" MacBook Pro with the high specs which is something that I wanted. I do my work at home and rarely travel so it's no issue for me and I prefer the smaller laptop than the 16".
Just bought a 14" with the M1 Max, 32 GB RAM, 32-core GPU, and 1 TB. Going to primarily use it in desktop mode with 2 or 3 external Studio Displays, so I don't need the bigger screen. I also have a small desk. When I travel with it, the smaller and lighter form factor will be really nice. I almost went with the 16" or a Mac Studio. I am saving about $300 total vs. the 16" because I am getting AppleCare and it's cheaper on the smaller one. And with that savings I bought Final Cut Pro. I hope I don't regret my choice. But if I find it too small, I will return it and get the larger size. I also already have a laptop carrying case that will only fit the smaller size. So I don't want to have to buy a new case. This video does make me worry that the smaller size might run too hot. But I don't use my computer that much, so I probably will be OK. And I don't really need the longer battery life as it will be connected to power most of the time. I currently have a M1 Mac Mini with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB, but I'm disappointed by the graphics performance and lack of external display support. Eventually I might get a M1 Ultra Mac Studio when the price comes down for a dedicated desktop.
I watched a sh+t ton of vids & ended up going round in circles haha... But in June 2023 I bought a M1 14" MacBook Pro & a great price too ..Its awesome I can do everything I need & more ...nice one thanks buddy
I bought a refurbished 16” M1 Max 10/32/64 4TB SSD and a 14” M1 Max 10/24/32 1TB SSD. They're both excellent machines in their own respect. The 16” sits at home alongside a 2020 fully-specced iMac 27 while the 14” accompanies me out and about. It's hard choosing between the two, hence the purchase. Do I regret it? Not at all.
I still prefer having the 14" (not necessarily fully spec’d) I’ve played with both the 16" and 14" at the store, while they both looked thicker than previous ones, and the 16" felt very bulky while holding it up and putting it back on the table, BUT MY QUESTION IS : are the new MBPs more prone to dings, for me the aluminum didn’t seem to be machined like the previous ones, and the screen lids wobble like crazy especially the 16" one, while the previous ones rock solid lids when bumping the table or putting them down… I still have the 15" from 2014 got it fully spec’d at the time, and after 8 years of use it handled bumps extremely well and the lid doesn’t wobble at all, even if you force it, it wobbles for like a split second and stops, the new ones especially the lids, feel less sturdy to me, and if they make the new Airs like that too, I think I’m gonna get a fully spec’d MBA before they change to the new design… sorry for my long comment but I was really wondering if anyone else noticed that and your experiences using the new MBPs with the new aluminum chassis/lids, THANKS!
I bought a 14 silver max.. Then came to my senses and took it back.. I now have a 16 MAX and 2 X 14 inch base models!! one at either side of my 16. nice setup
The 14" model is perfect for the M1 Pro chip. But then again, I wouldn't treat the 14" as a desktop replace but instead a highly capable portable machine.
Lol it's interesting to see someone's perspective on the size of these MacBooks. I thought the 16" was the perfect size, not too large not too small. I own an iPad Pro which is 13" so a laptop almost the size of my iPad doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If I want the smaller form factor I'm not very likely to be doing work that requires a lot of power, I'm probably just reading, checking emails or writing something, and I can just use the iPad for that. If I want a portable powerful system, I do want a larger screen so I can sit at a coffee shop or airport lounge and have more screen to work with for video projects.
Planning to buy a 14", M1PRO with 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU, 32 GB RAM. I am using it to play virtual synthesizers live, so graphics is not relevant, computing power is. I would prefer 14" because musical instruments are heavy enough. If I understood well, 14" limitations are with extreme graphics with M1Max version. Am I right? I am currently using a 13" M1 MacBookPro. It's OK for the power, but I really need more ports (more MIDI keyboards).
I recently bought the 14 inch base model MacBook Pro. For me, it checked all the boxes that I needed. I am one of those people who will never use this computer to its potential. I could have been just fine with the MacBook Air but I wanted a computer that would still be relevant in 3-5 years. I plan on doing some video editing but nothing close to the complexity of what you are doing.
The 16'' almost have the same factor as my Razer Blade 15 and is not much heavier (ignorable when in your backpacks). But it's build more solid, much cooler and quieter. Now I feel I got more from a Mac once I quit playing games. If you are used to portable gaming laptops, weight and size won't be an issue for you.
Very informative. Loaded M1Max 14" MBPs are apparently not the answer. But then this logically begs the questions: (1: Is the 14" M1Pro version, with all cores, a solid performer? Does it have heat and throttling issues? (2: Same question for the 14" M1Max with 24 GPU cores? (3: If someone wants a 14" M1X machine with at least occasional video editing capabilities in 1080p, 4K and maybe 5K or 6K, which would be the "sweet spot" in the number of useful GPU cores? (4: Switching to the 16" machines: what is the "sweet spot" for value there?
@@coveybingham6646 Not necessarily. I think the base 14" and the base 16" gets you the best performance/battery life combination. (You can add more storage and more memory, it'll still be very good). If you need the 10core, 32core gpu, I would get the 16".
I got the 14 inch M1 Max, 32 core GPU, 32 gb ram and 1 TB storage. I really wish I would have went with the M1 Pro 16 core GPU in the 14 inch, as the battery life is not as good as I expected and the M1 Max is overkill for my normal use. I have had several MacBook Airs since 2011 because I travelled a lot and really liked the portability. I really upgraded to the 14 inch Pro mainly for the mini LED 120 hz display, which is great.
thanks for all your reviews. Actually, just following them, I just got 16 inch 24 GPU one. And I'm supper happy with it. it may sound fanny, there is a shop in Norway (I leave here) where they have at last 6 of those in stock :)
Not using the GPU cores as a content creator would do but so far I have not heard the fans at all and pushing hard of this machine, for developers this is awesome. No heat, no battery drain

If laptops were on the same scale as smart phones (screen wise) we'd be lugging around 22" Macbooks! 100Wh battery limit for air travel would be a bummer though!
the I'm a Mac youtube channel recently made an interesting discovery: it's NOT thermal throttling that is the issue with the 14 inch, it's the power delivery. He ran his 14 inch outside in the snow, below 0C and the temps were very much under control, lower than what you'd get with a 16inch because of the cold ambient air, and it didn't help.
It’s a tough choice - I’m debating at the moment. I think I maybe wait for the next revision and see how that plays out, maybe the new higher model 14” will be a bit more balanced. I’ve often found taking large laptops on vacations to be futile anyway, I never end up working, just doing lights tasks, so an Air or iPad is a better choice for travel. I don’t really move around town with laptops anymore, nor work in cafes or coworking spaces. So to me most work gets done in front of a screen at the desk, but I’ve always enjoyed being able to unplug and go to another table in the house, chill on the couch or bed, and still have all my stuff just like it was at the desk. I think that’s why I can’t go a Studio or Mini, I prefer a laptop that handles dual duties like this. I will miss the 15” size though, which is I think the dilemma. 15” is perfect for me.
Thank you for another really helpful video! I'm sold on the 16", and leaning towards 32GB but undecided between 16 or 24 core. My previous MB Pro which was bought way back in 2008 used to get v.hot & noisy with the fans. I think the overheating/fan failure is what killed it in the end, although it did last 7-8yrs. Because of that I'm nervous about going for the 24 core. However, the performance clearly is better. Any advice? My use: - It will be my sole machine - I would like to keep it as long as possible (ideally 7+ yrs) - Image editing (lightroom/photoshop) - Video editing (predominantly 4k, probably not more than a few layers) - Visual effects (maybe some occasional After Effect use) Also, does the size of SSD influence performance or life span? Unsure whether to go 1 or 2TB. Trying to keep costs down but if it will have an impact on longevity then I would prefer to invest a bit more up front.
actually, apple makes the best base models which give the best value for money. base model MacBook Air, base model MacBook Pro 16 inch (10/16 core) are great machines. Same way, base model 14 inch (8/14 cores) is actually in many ways a better device and better value than higher spec 14 inch models. So my advice for 90% of users, either get base MacBook Air, or base MacBook Pro 14 or 16 inch. 16 inch model can easily handle 10/16 cores (so apple does not give 8/14 option), while for 14 inch, in most situations 8/14 cores is good enough.
What is better "MacBook pro 14-inch m1 max storage 1TB/ memory32GB/ 32-core" OR "MacBook pro 16.2-inch (2023) M2 pro 16gb/1TB"? I found them for almost the same price, so now I'm thinking which one is better, please help!
only reason i'd get a 16" would be because i ONLY used it in "laptop mode" and never had an external monitor. i dont really have such a life, so this situation will not be relevant for me...
Not surprised there would be issues in configurations. First generation models are a gamble, but I’m sure the next ones will improve. However, I won’t own one of these machines as it’s way more than I need. Possibly the entry level 14-inch or 13-inch, but I think the MacBook Air or iMac is where I’ll be heading. My Mac mini i7 will become a server
This really sucks as a digital nomad no matter how much money i spend i still can’t go with the 16 cuz of the extra bulk and weight. Now im in a really tough buying decision

Apple needs to bring back the 15" that's the perfect size. 14 is too small 16 too heavy
Max, Could any of these issues be fixed with an update (optimization)
Intelligent move, regardless of thermals throttlers and overall powers. Starting to feel the same way. Only 5months behind ya.
@@mmhcreates I just got one last month after never using a Mac in my life and I can say it’s amazing worth every penny 😊
I’m not the same boat 😅
For me it is incredible that a 14” can have this power, bigger ones will always be superior at least in battery and cooling but without the portability. 14” is the king for me
Where can you take a 14" that you can't take a 16"? I never understood this argument as if there are backpacks that will only fit the 14".
@@MarmaladeSally It depends what you do, I ofter works in small server rooms, on the go at costumer's home ect... size does matter.
Naturally.macbook air or ipad pro are much lighter still. …
Same :D
Use you iPad on the plane 😄
No seriously the 16 inch is awesome on an airplane regardless. Still amazing for everyday use
Completely agree with you, bigger size can be a problem for pro max iphones, because we use it holding in hands, but not for laptops.
I chose the 14" because I use my laptops docked at home. I need it to be portable on the go. I am also only getting the M1 Pro. If I want the M1 Max, I will surely get the 16".

My usage is the exact same but I did opt for the Max. Hopefully I won’t regret the battery life
What specs did you get? 24 core?
Same. He mad people like us feel bad about our purchase.
I got the 14 but returned it for the 16. Such a hard decision. I don’t mind carrying around the 16 at all so the choice eventually became clear.
Exactly my situation. 24c is the best value spec and using the More space option is just enough to edit comfortably
Exactly the same - I went into an Apple Store to check out the 14" and the 16", expecting to buy the 16", and completely changed my mind when I held the 16" IRL. Too big and too heavy for me. I got the 14" instead and really love it. Definitely the best choice for me.
Well I ordered the 16” to replace my decade old MacBook Air.
Maybe my MacBook Air will be my travel machine since the MBP is soooo expensive.
Im hard pressed to imagine the 16" speakers being a whole lot better, because I was shocked at how great/loud the 14" speakers are!
Attention viewers. This is somewhat clickbait.
If you are not a pro user 100% of the time, the 14 inch is fine.
I totally agree. Most of the people have gotten 14", this is kinda a triggering people. I am not saying I want to hear what feels good but I also don't want to hear how 2 machines with different form factors and prices are not the same!! lol
M1 will do
Na, even if your not a pro. Longer battery, better speakers and more screen all for $200 is totally worth it. Everybody can benefit from that.
If you are not a pro user, a MacBook Air is more than adequate for you. Hell, even an iPad maybe enough for you if you don't use it for anything productive.
@@Marngel I second the M1 air. That’s really an outstanding computer for $1000. And that will be even more true with the next refresh.
Returned my 14" Pro and got a 16GB/1TB Air instead - I prefer the design of the Air, and the price. Miss the screen a bit, but not enough to make it a keeper.
Same here I like the air design better and is really powerful
Is there a different in the screen quality between the Air and the Pro?
@@steve5nash Very much so. The Pro has an XDR screen. Jaw dropping quality for films/videos. If the Air had an XDR screen I'd be happy as a pig in poo.
@@salparadise1220 Thanks
I just bought a 14 inch pro and may do this as well
I recently got a 14inch. It’s been an amazing machine. Granted I will admit that I didn’t really need one and the M1 air would have been more than enough. However, considering my last computer was a 2013 MBP this has definitely been an upgrade
Used an MBP mid 2009 before, also bought an 14" and totally understand you. More power than I need, but endless joy.
If you do parallel computing in R or something similar, you will hear the fan roaring
Right? To these reviewers only video editing exist… as productivity task
:)
I went the route of getting an M1 air base for anything needing extreme portability, and the base m1 pro 16" (With 1TB upgrade) for anything requiring a large amount of performance. Having the 2 devices was still cheaper than maxing out either of the Macbook Pro's. Pretty happy.
That's rational thinking. Doing the same here
You just made me feel even better about going with the 16”.
Thanks!
@@NOT_A_TOP_FAN exactly 50 percent battery in one hour .I can't even reach to 50 percent after working all day .14 all the way
The best channel on TH-cam. You guys cover topics not mentioned elsewhere
Finally - someone that has a Waterfield’s Design Sutter Slim - do you think you could fit a single mirrorless camera into the main compartment?
Yes the 16" had few things over the 14", for instance, the smaller screen real-estate for editing, but I found this almost none existing when setting the screen resolution on 'More Space'
And battery life..?
The 24-Core M1 Max gives me more battery life than the 32” core version and when running in ‘Low Power Mode” it tugs along even more, (getting close to the 16” inch 32-Core battery at full power)
With battery in ‘Low Power Mode” the Raw power stays clearly above the M1 Pro taking nothing away from my ‘editing on the road’ experience.
(they weren’t able to test the Binned version, so it was an estimate..)
Well to my surprise, the 24-core is really, really well optimized!
I ran the same tests (and having chosen the best optimized settings in Neat-Video,
I got/get Best GPU only, 33.9 fps..! and CPU+GPU, 33.2 fps..
The other surprise (at least for me) was Premiere Pro (the Intel version)
I still had an older CC 2021 v 15.4.1 (none-native) version of PP on my Mac (as backup) just to see how it runs under Rosetta2.
Using the native a7s3 Footage (a 10sec 4K xavc-hs 120fps 10Bit 4.2.0 clip) on a 24fps timeline,
slowing it down to 20% speed, I added 3 grading effects on the clip, and then made a multi-shot collage of 20 videos playing together, (with each a having a few seconds delay-start from the one before)
It played amazingly well!
As long as you don't go that crazy route I think you'll do fine with the Pro CPU 32GB 16 core 1 TB version (all-though I would go with the 2 TB version if you want to future proof your SSD space for future larger projects.)
You also named 1080p..... All I did was testing the heaviest 4K a7s3 footage, ...so 1080p will most definitely work perfectly. :)
What Editor/NLE are you going to work with?
I used Adobe Premiere Pro, but also tested it with FCPX. I found that Adobe Premiere Pro worked much more fluently with playback and scrolling in the time-line (with the native a7s3 footage. Off-course if you convert the footage to Apple ProRes 422, editing (playback speed) will be unmatched in FCPX
Haven't tried out Resolve yet, but going to do that soon, as many reviewers have clearly shown it also works marvelously well with a7s3 footage.

I agree with your excellent comments.

No fan noise for me either! And I own a 2019 13” Intel MBP. That thing is scary quiet for day to day use. Stupid fast too
Hi, based on all yours reviews regarding MacBook 14" and 16", I chose MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro, with 10/16 core, 16 GB RAM (the differences between 16 and 32 TB was very small in your FCP tests) and 2TB SSD.
I got the 14 “ due to size and weight for travel . I think for my needs it will be great although it was expensive. 😊

Your videos really helped me. I almost bought a similar machine to you and now chose the 16 inch instead. THANK YOU!! Money saved $$

I've watched dozens of your videos and this is the first time I realized there are two of you guys.
Thanks for all of your videos, after debating with myself for months I have the 16” and I absolutely love it. I would have gotten the 14” but I sacrificed the size to get these speakers, battery life and display, I’m super pleased with my choice.
Bro take care , we need more videos , i feel like u have colddd! Love max tech 😍😍
Using all the info that Maxtech put together, I decided to go for a base model 16" and I couldn't be happier.

@@jifaraata9668 you could just run OSX in a VM ....
Cant complain.
the best deal i think would be the macbook air when you dont push the 14" that the fans wont even spin on, the air is not that much slower, the display is good (95% wouldnt even notice the better screen of the pro), sound is ok, super light weight and great battery performance for less then half the price.. save the other half of the money for when the m2 macbook air comes 2023 and you have another gread value deal
what specs did u choose?
@@bywavy It's a base Model, 16/512GB. The $1850 is the student discounted price from the Apple education store.

Your other video convinced me to get 16 gb ram instead of 32 gb on my 14" and that was a great decision, thanks!
There is no better place for review, use cases etc. than you guys. Can't thank you enough for all the tests you guys do! ❤
thank you for that bold purchase of the ff. MBPs and that amazing effort to review each one. Definitely these videos help us decide, Keep it up and hoping you will reach that 1m milestone soon
Hey Bud. Thanks for all the videos. Cheers from Brazil.
I just ordered a 16” MacBook Pro with M1 Max.
Shipping estimate says mid to late March, I hope it will be worth the wait!
Not at all.
For me it's a great macbook, i personally prefer the smaller version 14”, i can take it anywhere, great video❤️❤️👌
I now have a 16 MAX and 2 X 14 inch base models!! one at either side of my 16. nice setup
Apple rule: always buy base model
The 14" model is perfect for the M1 Pro chip. But then again, I wouldn't treat the 14" as a desktop replace but instead a highly capable portable machine.
The 14vs 16 dilemma has always been there. One thing to ask it: do you wanna enjoy it more when using it? Or walking with it? Lol
Quite right!!
Yes. Thank you!!! The best and latest info for us still waiting to buy :)
The 16 M1 pro seems to be the sweet spot
Planning to buy a 14", M1PRO with 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU, 32 GB RAM. I am using it to play virtual synthesizers live, so graphics is not relevant, computing power is.
I would prefer 14" because musical instruments are heavy enough.
If I understood well, 14" limitations are with extreme graphics with M1Max version. Am I right?
I am currently using a 13" M1 MacBookPro. It's OK for the power, but I really need more ports (more MIDI keyboards).
Awesome video. Glad I ordered the 16”
I just placed my order :) thanks for all the videos
We love your honesty, Max
Thanks Max Tech team for being the best MacBook reviewers on TH-cam
Great video I think I might get the 14 inch and the 16 inch, and get a 13” Air for casual browsing…. Your TH-cam channel is a huge part of my life
lmao , perfect comment .
I got an intel ad on this video 💀
This is the exact reason why I got the 14" base (8c cpu, 14c gpu) - I wanted the best battery for 14" and also no thermal throttling
So you think 14 is better??
The M1 Max 32 core 14” model is terrible on battery life so I agree. The 16” Max is the way to go.
I have the 14”. I love it. So much faster than my 13” trade in.
This is why I love Max. What a great guy!
thanks for all your reviews. Actually, just following them, I just got 16 inch 24 GPU one. And I'm supper happy with it. it may sound fanny, there is a shop in Norway (I leave here) where they have at last 6 of those in stock :)
So, although you can configue the 14 inch the same as the 16 inch, it is only advisable to limit the 14 inch to the M1 Pro.

Well way to make everyone feel good about there purchase in a market where you can barley find one at all. great video .
You guys are amazing
Any advice?
My use:
- It will be my sole machine
- I would like to keep it as long as possible (ideally 7+ yrs)
- Image editing (lightroom/photoshop)
- Video editing (predominantly 4k, probably not more than a few layers)
- Visual effects (maybe some occasional After Effect use)
Also, does the size of SSD influence performance or life span?
