Yeah. This isn't really the machine you need to compile and link a project. Any machine with a fast SSD and non garbage tier CPU will do great. The issue is 100% testing the project output. Especially if you have to output to a local VM or VM-net.
I wish there was a Mac channel with an actual programmer on staff that could give us more info, because yeah the "Xcode programming" benchmark is completely useless for most people. I don't even know what project they're compiling and using for the benchmark.
Went for the 14 inch with the 10 core / 16 core / 16GB RAM / 1TB SSD as opposed to the base 16 inch model. More portability and the extra storage to eliminate the need for an external SSD is more a priority for me as a student but for anyone else, ye the base 16 inch may be better. Since I can also hook it up to my monitor at home if needed
@Marc Marc i went different route i can always replace external ssd , here once performace drops due to storage being written over over again you're done unless you have apple care
I did this but didn’t upgrade the ssd because I use iCloud and external drives as well. I went with 32 ram. I don’t want to see that rainbow wheel ever . Lol
i would say thats a much smarter buy then going balls deep with the m1 max this will be shit in 2 years hell this has doubled the m1 and its only been a year
80% bass is only for 16 inch version: I’m sure 14 in would be a bit quieter but many times better sounding and louder than pro 13. Locking forward to seeing your audio comparison(but please choose another song).
during the event, apple said those were in the 14 in too. Don't know if it's 80% since they had more air to push in the wider 16 in though, but they are there.
Although Vadim, we all know you can't wait to test some sick games on that 32 core GPU yourself :D Would be interesting to see gaming benchmarks under Parallels Windows as well. Thanks for the informational video!
I ordered a 14inch M1 pro 16core cpu/gpu with 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I’m glad this video kind of described my thoughts when I ordered it 2 days ago. Because I was really debating on spending more to get the max chip. But eventually decided I probably don’t ever need that power for my workflow of music production and some light video editing / gaming. I can’t fucking wait for it to arrive.
The m1 MacBook air really already served most people. These new models are definitely overkill for most people and are really meant for those who plan on using these laptops on a daily basis with a slight emphasis on heavier workloads. Having that said I definitely agree that most people don’t need anything more than the base model 16 inch and 14 inch. Only exception is the 16 inch 24 core option where you can potentially get better cooling, more ram and better gpu performance but at that point that is over $3000
You guys have some great videos and practical advice! Hope you get to a million subscribers soon as you thoroughly deserve that and more! Thanks for all the effort
I ordered the 16” with the max chip, 32gb ram, and 1tb storage. I’m considering canceling my order and maxing it out the rest of the way with 64gb and get another tb of storage... but it’d be another $850. However I’m already at $3700 (with tax) so another $850 doesn’t sound like too much at this point 😂
I got the 16inch with the max chip as well, was deciding between 32GB and 64GB RAM, I went for the 32GB eventually, 64GB is just overkill for me. I have a 64GB RAM Windows PC and the RAM usage barely even touches 16GB lol
I ordered the 16 MAX 32GB RAM 1TB SSD right after the event and got a delivery time on 10 November. I just canceled it and placed 2 seperate orders one with 32 RAM but 2 TB SSD, and the other 64 RAM and 2TB SSD. The delivey extended for 2 weeks longer, but now I have time thinking for more several weeks to decide between the two orders without havinh to cancel and reorder
This is a very comprehensive guide! My friends and I have been working in the tech industry for a while and one of us even works on evaluating CPU performance for a big tech company. Our buying decision generally agrees with yours. I only want to add that most of us opted for the M1 Max with 24 GPU cores on the 14inch with 32GB of unified memory instead of the 16inch because we value the smaller and compact design. Most of us have a main desktop or server for more intensive workload so 14inch M1 Max with 32GB of unified memory is more than enough to cover office communication, entertainment, graphics works, and gaming. Speaking of gaming, I understand there is Rosetta, Steam on Mac and Crossover but not every game we play is supported. For example, we could not even get the gg launcher to work for Witcher 3 and CyberPunk using Crossover. I would definitely opt for the 32-core GPU M1 Max if Apple has better gaming support, but in reality, they are not there yet.
The M1 MBA is better than fine for most 'normal' people. Plus, it's at least 25% lighter. Also, it's _completely_ silent since it has no fans! That right there is the best feature for many. The new MBPs run with more power, which means more cooling and probably more noise than the M1 MBP.
@@Mamo878 I think it's even more capable for more than just "normal" people, we get so hype about the new chips (rightfuly so) that we forgot the M1 chip is an asbolute monster on its own.
Hey Max, can you please do other programming tests not just Xcode Benchmarking? Others tests for example in NodeJS and Docker. That would be awesome. Thank you a lot!
I bought the 16" M1 Max with 1TB SSD, 32-core GPU, and 64GB of RAM. Why? Because I wanted to. I don't do anything more than Safari and basic photo editing, however, I find that Safari with multiple tabs open sucks up all of RAM on my 32GB iMac and I have to keep restarting to clear memory, so I'm hoping 64GB will reduce that issue.
Best buyers guide ever, it helped me so much. Also I wanna see if we can play games just like gaming laptops on the new MacBook Pros, so can you guys make a video on it?
@@mailanmanu Yeah I said that because it has very powerful chip and it now has Pro Motion which is the main feature to be a gaming laptop, so I am interested on seeing the results.
When you review the new MBPs, please test them by attaching a couple of monitors. The past MBPs didn't perform well when connected to monitors. Just too much intolerable fan noise. It would be helpful to see how the new MBPs play with monitors.
Damn I wished they keep the 1800 dollars price tag for the base 14 inch model but since you are getting 120 hz pro motion, mini led and higher resolution, I guess the price hike is justified at least compared to the intel version
What I am thinking is you are getting something you could never buy with the 13" Intel MacPros - dedicated GPU performance. When the slide came up saying 7x Intel integrated graphics, I thought, holy shezz.
As a business student who only uses Mac for typing, spreadsheets, presentations, video watching, and internet surfing, the 14” base configuration is more than enough for me. I’m excited to get my new MacBook Pro in three weeks - finally replacing my 2016 MBP 13”!
@@Bingeworthy I was about to cancel and place order again with 64gb but shipping was going to be in December I can’t wait that long. What got me thinking was that it is shared with the gpu
@@jhonatanrosario6787 same by the time I wanted to make any changes the dates got pushed back to unreasonable time. Glad i found this video to at least make me feel better lol
And notice - that TC did not say "see you next year" as he did last year in the final event for 2020 - so a November or December event is coming up. Probably with the Mac mini but hopefully also with the larger iMac. And also notice that the new Logic Pro release - is now the first release you can't upgrade to if you can only update to Catalina - first time I experienced this - there by saying - the larger iMac is really needed to launch soon...
Probably no new Mini or iMac that soon. It feels too close to the release of the new Pro. Maybe March is a more reasonable month to expect new Minis and iMacs in.
@@jonatanjakobsson5821 I agree and also what the rumours says - but IF there's one more event this year - what should it be then? Half-a-year for professionels to wait for a larger iMac workstation seems a little too long...
I am really curious about gaming with a virtual machine on these. I'm curious about the higher-end games that are actually available for Mac OS, but the VM performance of some of these higher-end chips could be really interesting. Some of these chips can probably run Windows in a VM better than a lot of Windows laptops.
"If you're a gamer" don't buy a Mac at all. No matter how good the GPU performance of the M1 Max is, most games are literally not built for MacOS. Instead of spending $3500 for the M1 Max, buy a base 14" on sale for $1750 and then spend the remaining $1750 on a mid tier gaming desktop with an RTX3070 which would out perform every Mac for pretty much every game.
Y'all got your comments and the graphic on "SSD Caching" mixed up. The "Cached Files" you were pointing to is actually files from the SSD that are cached in main memory for faster access. The "Swap used" right below it data from main memory temporarily moved to the SSD to free up RAM for application use. I also wouldn't call it "SSD Caching" because it isn't really caching, it's swapping which is a different thing all together and in fact can be considered almost the inverse of caching.
Amazing! I think now it's about the time that Apple will change the direction of the industry. From now on, more and more pro apps will have to follow and get their apps for M1 chip! Great vids as always Max Tech.
@@ScottSullivanTV I never said they didn’t or that nobody needs more storage. I said I personally don’t care, although I would welcome a larger base size if it happened.

Loving the content at the moment! I’m so excited to order one of these but I’m waiting for a video comparing the performance of the M1 Pro and the M1 Max for video editing…
hey bro, how does the 14 core gpu in the m1 pro MacBook compare with the rx5600m in MacBook 16, is the 14 core GPU faster or slower than rx5600m in graphics performance?
Very helpful, thanks a lot for this video. Still confused about M1 Max/M1Pro and what I should get for my video editing needs. What I will get - 16inch M1Max 10 Core CPU 24 Core GPU 32GB RAM 1TB SSD
@@zhuokaizhao5926 Why?? Are you asking why I'm saying that. As an actual programmer I have no idea wtf any of those charts and numbers mean for me. Hell the biggest thing I care about is the multi monitor support and battery life as a programmer. If it means compile time then cool that also helps but someone needs to label it as such. Also it depends on what compile times, java, C++,or are we sticking with swift here?
@@zhuokaizhao5926 Yeah if that's the case, I would def like to know. It's a cool laptop and I'm ordering one. I'm just not sure they're actually advertising to us properly considering those metrics are pretty pointless for programmers.
@@kevinbs05 Well, programming is a fairly specialized thing that non-programmers don't even really know what specs and metrics to look and test for. Maybe you could suggest to the gang at Max Tech an additional test or two specific to programmers that they could add to their testing regimen. It seems like they do want to be pretty thorough in their testing and may welcome the additional tests. Especially if it gets them to the 1M subscriber count!

I just bought the 2019 16 inch MacBookpro pretty much maxed out but I think I might upgrade
during the event, apple said those were in the 14 in too. Don't know if it's 80% since they had more air to push in the wider 16 in though, but they are there.
Although Vadim, we all know you can't wait to test some sick games on that 32 core GPU yourself :D

Excellent summary, we shall follow your advice to buy one Macbook Pro 14" & one Macbook Pro 16"
Thanks for the comprehensive breakdown. Your buyer's guide is definitely a must-see for those considering a new MacBook Pro.
Going from the $2500 Pro to lowest "$200" Max upgrade is actually $600, not $200 more. You are forced into $400 worth of extra RAM.
it is DDR5 RAM though and those are expensive; and the mini-LED 3k adaptive refresh display alone is worth at least $100 more.
yes and I dont like that
I ordered the 16” with the max chip, 32gb ram, and 1tb storage. I’m considering canceling my order and maxing it out the rest of the way with 64gb and get another tb of storage... but it’d be another $850. However I’m already at $3700 (with tax) so another $850 doesn’t sound like too much at this point 😂
Same, I’m thinking of max out with 2tb storage
I got the 16inch with the max chip as well, was deciding between 32GB and 64GB RAM, I went for the 32GB eventually, 64GB is just overkill for me. I have a 64GB RAM Windows PC and the RAM usage barely even touches 16GB lol
If you cancel and re-order, it’s looking like you won’t get your system until December!
@@toobalicious I know.. feels bad 😭
This is the guide I've been waiting for! Thanks so much
This is a very comprehensive guide!
YOUR CHANNEL IS THE BEST IN MAC REVIEWS !KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
As sweet as it sounds, I’ll keep my super snappy M1 MacBook Air, and I’ll wait for the Mac mini with that M1 Max beast under the hood
I love that you’re still wearing the shirt with the crossed out M1X(edit: and that you also made merch of it lolll)
man, spent about 4h review you videos - crazy value.
That would be interesting for me

It will take a bit but the future of mac gaming looks bright, However you shouldnt buy the mac to start gaming on it now, its best to wait.
@@mailanmanu Yeah I said that because it has very powerful chip and it now has Pro Motion which is the main feature to be a gaming laptop, so I am interested on seeing the results.
@@ifiwantyoutofeel Yeah,I agree with you too.

I am really curious about gaming with a virtual machine on these. I'm curious about the higher-end games that are actually available for Mac OS, but the VM performance of some of these higher-end chips could be really interesting. Some of these chips can probably run Windows in a VM better than a lot of Windows laptops.
We will test it :)

I'm even more excited to watch your reviews of all the new Macs than I was to watch the Apple keynote!

Sometimes I wonder if tech reviewers know what they’re saying when they talk programming performance.
why?
@@zhuokaizhao5926 Why?? Are you asking why I'm saying that. As an actual programmer I have no idea wtf any of those charts and numbers mean for me. Hell the biggest thing I care about is the multi monitor support and battery life as a programmer. If it means compile time then cool that also helps but someone needs to label it as such. Also it depends on what compile times, java, C++,or are we sticking with swift here?

Well, programming is a fairly specialized thing that non-programmers don't even really know what specs and metrics to look and test for. Maybe you could suggest to the gang at Max Tech an additional test or two specific to programmers that they could add to their testing regimen. It seems like they do want to be pretty thorough in their testing and may welcome the additional tests. Especially if it gets them to the 1M subscriber count!
