P2000 for prep stage for next layers is way over, you won't eliminate texture and edges, and paint won't stick properly. You will just get your hand tired :P P1500+ is basicly polishing... I use ~230 as prep for primer, 400-500 for solid colours, 600-800 for metallics, rarely 1000 if the grain is really fine.
