Which doesn't mean anything since everyone has an opinion whether it's factual or not.
@@garyzaremba5057 Precisely why we should not give a shit if anybody's offended
It’s hard for me to imagine that there are educated young people out there that actually think the government regulating speech is a good idea…crazy
Also known as marxist in training
The bullied getting revenge on their bullies
Be careful what you wish for
Why is it hard to imagine? They've spent most of their lives being "educated" by the government.
They are getting educated by the government? Who is they? Can you imagine it?
Educated doesn't mean smart or wise. It only means they have absorbed the ideologies of their educational institutions long enough to regurgitate it for a grade.
Grade, which is the level of which the institutions are satisfied or not satisfied with the thoroughness that their ideologies have been regurgitated back to them.
"In order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive." - Jordan Peterson
Kathy Newman: “So what you’re saying is that I’m too dumb to ask you questions.”
Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me. Unless I'm a snowflake.
Then ban the names and threaten compliance with sticks and stones... also... ban sticks and stones except for snowflake intelligence agencies.
"You make me feel uncomfortable" is such a cowardly phrase. Your feelings are your problem, your fault and your responsibility. I can't make or force you to feel anything. You being offended makes me feel deeply uncomfortable. So what now? Grow up, you child.
I agree that speech shouldn't be regulated, and using your discomfort as an excuse to control people's behavior is completely vile.
I believe this is the crux of the issue. It's not about people feeling offended; it's about people weaponizing your kindness and proclivity to avoid conflict against you and as a way to massage their ideology.
However, you still have to take responsibility for what you say. What you say can and will affect other people. Claiming you're not responsible for the impact your words have on others is also unacceptable.
I know what it feels like to live with people who think they can say and do whatever they want without dealing with any consequences. Everything has consequences.
Now, there definitely shouldn't be legal consequences for what you say, within reason of course (inciting violence, threats, slander, etc.).
Just... Think about why you're saying what you're saying. Are you saying that because you're bitter? Are you saying it because you want to hurt someone? Are you being arrogant?
In My opinion the digitalisation Made this partially possible....the younger people dont need to cope with real konversations anymore...as soon ITS uncomfortable they can Block you ore Something Like that.
The Babys need to wake up
The young man applauded Jordan's response. Jordan is the most articulate defender of free speech we know.
Jesusfkinchrist your standards are horrible. He's against anonymity on the internet.
Except of course if its free speech asking for an end to Genocide, then Peterson suddenly remembers that Zionists pay his salary and he conveniently forgets factual history. Dude's a puppet.
He is the best!!!
And Elon is the pioneer to reestablish free speech when people beforehand were being silenced. Even our then sitting President was banned from Twitter before Elon purchased the platform.
Yet he's now calling for censoring people... Go figure.
Salute for even being able to follow that question
was there a question? I lost interest after about 15 seconds
It was a rant disguised as a question. I lost interest almost immediately.
I don't know what he asked. His rambling obnoxious accent was too distracting.
Peterson is a good answerer because he is a great listener. He once commented on a previous discussion by saying that he didn’t do well in it because he wasn’t listening well enough.

“You don’t have the right of not being offended!” 😂😂
Hate speech to some isn't hate speech to others. The trick is the individual controlling their own emotions.
Exactly! Imagine everyone deeming things said that they don’t like hate speech.
Offense is NEVER given, only taken. You have to take offense. No matter what anyone says they cannot give it. Ever.
Calling a gay guy the F word or a black the N word is hateful but yeah speech shouldn’t be banned.
@@BooDamnHoo Vapid comment. If someone killed your daughter or son you’d not only be offended you’d hate the perpetrator.
@@michaelmcgee335 The problem is it went from calling someone Ñ or F word to merely saying Ñ or F word being offensive. Words only have the power one gives them…and I’m black.
The definition of hate speech is simple: it's anything that a narcissist hates hearing.
Right on the money. Narcissists are wasteful parasites.
Kid rants about other people talking loudly and aggressively whilst talking loudly and aggressively.
He seems utterly possessed.
Kids in a big room with one of the most devastating minds of our day opposite him: more nerves than aggression
@@dexstewart2450 - You could be right, it cross my mind. But if I had to bet money I’d say he’s ideologically possessed and probably talks like that a lot.
Can’t take a man with long nails seriously sorry.
The irony is that he is concerned that his speech, which he assumes is 'valuable insight,' gets crowded out by the more vociferous and dominant speech of, say, Trump, which he uses as an example (and could be deemed offensive if a pro-Trump listener had the same low bar of being easily offended as he does), even though his speech is being listened to without interruption by a respectful crowd, host and guest, and was recorded and uploaded for an innumerable number of viewers primarily because of the high status of Oxford as a university (which I'm assuming he is affiliated with).
@@dexstewart2450 nah... he's a serial one. Try and find the debate where he's just discovered the word "discourse" - it'll blow your mind.
That was NOT a question; it was a speech. In the name of letting everyone express their views (as long as they don't diverge very far from his), this young man is trying to dominate the discussion. The concept of hate speech has been co-opted by the Left. They claim all speech that expresses a view they do not like is hate speech. Jordan nailed it: He who gets to define "hate" controls the language, thus the narrative, thus the culture. We must not regulate, let alone criminalize, what we cannot or will not define.
If we can never say anything that might be taken by someone as offensive, then we can never speak at all.
When you need to ask long questions, it's because you need to impose an idea on someone prior to ask so you tell them you expect them to asnwer the way you want
It’s also funny how he brought up Trump but didn’t say anything about the mobs of people that literally go around college campuses trying to stop JP from speaking.
Trying to sound clever more like
LOL, amazing how a geeky teenager asking a perfectly reasonable question which JP welcomed and answered has caused such distress to the fragile egos of the commentators on here.
@@Nousmourronsseuls Ego damage? No, not at all. I simply noted that when one is invited to ask a question, it should be a question, not a lecture. Had I been the speaker, I would have stopped him after about 15 seconds and said, "What's your question?"
No one gives a toss about this student's self-perceived notion of "harm." The very fact he's so vocal about weaponizing "harm" to shut people up illustrates that he can't be trusted as an arbiter of what "harm" means, let alone to dole out punishment to people he thinks cause it.
Some people wants Double standards.
You should calm down. He asked a question. He didn’t try to “shut people up”.
@@Nousmourronsseuls He literally says that "there are some cases where freedom of speech should be *curtailed* ," namely when "I as an individual am affected by discourse in a way that makes me feel *uncomfortable* " because "that surely means my valuable insight is shut out." He is saying that harmful speech that might make people like him "uncomfortable" should be "curtailed" because it might leave them so harmed they don't feel comfortable speaking up. (A.K.A. Shut up because my feelings. What else do "curtailed" and "uncomfortable" possibly mean if not that?)

😂😂😂
It is not enough that you know the truth, it is essential that you have the courage to speak out.
Hate doesn’t exist in words. It dwells in the mind and soul. You cannot police what you cannot know with certainty. Thought crime facilitates totalitarianism not justice.
While hate exists and originates in / from the mind it most certainly does manifest in words and physical actions.
"These are just words, don't blame them for the pictures that form inside"
Those images that form inside oneself from hearing or reading someones opinions, yeah, they are entirely on oneself.
If anything, stupid though it be, 'hate speech laws' should curtail the thoughts of the ones perceiving it as hateful.
Reminds me of the episode from Star Trek (TNG), where a member of the crew 'thought of' the idea to punish someone brutally while on the planet of betazoid where the inhabitants could telepathically communicate, and such thoughts were criminally prosecuted.
Thoughts become ideas and ideas become action. Clearly, this is a tough subject where unfortunately hard lines have been drawn on both sides of the argument. We cannot and should not regulate speech but we cannot not allow bullying and uncivil conduct as well if we want to maintain a productive social compact. It is a conundrum.
Yes and no. It can be expressed via words, so it's complicated
Out of the heart the mouth speaketh. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee ❤
Forcing people to be silent will not change who they are, what they think, or how they feel. Nor will it result in those people wanting to hear what you have to say.

This is a wisdom that should be taught to kindergarteners in the US. It's not that hard to understand. Trade offs with everything - if you don't have maximal liberty in speech, your society will blow.
Do you remember the days when someone said something hateful towards you... You then punched them in the face, went for a pint then become friends..... This weak generation is sickening
I’ve had that experience a bunch of times, and been on both sides of that punch. The younger generation is strong in some ways and far weaker in others, when I was growing up you had to stand up for yourself and punch your bullies in the face, be willing to fight for respect. When you had done that you gained the respect of your peers and life could be peaceful again. I’m in my middle years and have gone back to college for film school classes and the culture of oversensitivity in that environment is basically another kind of bullying. I was in a good mood one evening during a class on a Zoom meeting and I was complimenting and saying encouraging words to another student in my class who had expressed a basic low self-esteem and doubt in the quality of the screenplay she’d written. I said, “Don’t worry about it sweetheart, your script is great and you should feel good about it!” And of course my professor afterwards sent me a lengthy email about how what I said or how I said it was offensive. And I strongly disagree, and I argued my case with him. I think the key in all of this is intention and where your heart is at when you communicate with others. Hope that makes sense, cheers!
😂
It's part of why competitive sport is so important growing up
Correct but why do you think the generation is weak? Easy times make weak men and hard men make the easy times, so you can put the blame at the feet of the prior generations
Lol. Yeah, that's one way to see things. Even the big media platforms have changed their policies, they censor indiscriminately with the help of A.I. The snowflake generation has taken charge.
Man, Jordan Peterson is formidable.
You think 😮😅😂😅. Love his abilities to make us think 🤔!!!
He is a Treasure to our world 🌍. Your milage may vary. jm2c 👍.
The Scottish mistake can be highlighted like this. If JK Rowling spoke the truth about biological sex - and then she was attacked verbally and in writing by activists who hate her for speaking the truth - can those activists then be charged for their own hate speech? And should that happen immediately so that clarification is determined?
Some of the worst things that have been said, have spurred people on to attain the most incredible courageous achievements
"Make sure not to say anything I might be offended by...oh and by the way that's anything I disagree with"
This is an example of an extremely long winded question, from a militant ideologue.
An import that has no respect for his new home.
No kidding. I didn't get anything really of what he said.
Any 'question' that begins "Do you think that......." and then sets out a long-winded point of view is first and foremost a point of view badly disguised as a question. Instead of agreeing with him (largely) which is what JP did, I'd like to have challenged him on whether he actually had a desire to ask a question instead of broadcasting his own point of view.
Nonetheless, his question's meaningfully more rational than the typical shouting that's common today.
@@lazur1 I agree with you on that.
There is no such thing as hate speech, only speech you hate.
Everyone should has to take shroom or LSD before voting and have to have a research session of 5 hour of both sides before voting that is logged. If that was law we would already be a multi planetary race!! Fact tell me I lied 😂

We should NEVER curtail free speech to accommodate the fear and fragility of others.

It's interesting how desperate those people are to dismantle free speech.
I live by the adage, “What other people think of me is none of my business.”
JP is without question the greatest critical thinker in the last few centuries. Unparalleled genius.
I just can’t fathom letting someone’s words be so harmful to your fragile feelings that would ask a government to jail or silence them. How weak could one possibly be.
Yes agreed
Credit to the student and to Jordan. The student expressed himself, and sat quietly listening while Jordan responded. Jordan took the opportunity to educate rather than shame. Certain commenters could take a lesson. Being so desperate to make enemies makes one exactly like their enemies. Perhaps we could be the adults in the room.
The problem with laws on speech is that the psychopaths will move toward gaining more of a foothold and expand on those laws or dictate what hate speech actually is. Nobody in this world is wise enough or incorruptible enough to manage these types of laws. The only thing you can logically do is allow it.

Cathy Newman still paying for her stupid question.. LOL
Freedom of speech means you hear things you dont like from people you dont like. Get over it.
Free speech must be absolute.
No, obviously it shouldn't...and isn't.
Imagine a world where I can incite violence (easily btw) against you absent of existing laws - the product of centuries testing via Western Civilization - prohibiting various kinds of free speech.
Or a world where manufacturers could claim any ingredients went into their product to the benefit of their profit and the detriment of their customers.
Or....well I could go on virtually indefinitely.
There's reasons Western Civilization has curtailed various forms of free speech and these have had empirically demonstrably beneficial effects in society.
The one condition that exempts free speech being curtailed is that there is good reason to believe (in the eyes of an impartial judiciary) that it is true.
no, absolutely not.
The only contingency that protects speech is that it is true, or that the speaker has good reason to believe it is true. (Good reason being robust empirical evidence.)
Anything else is potentially rightly subject to censure by any intelligent populace.
(Otherwise chaos would reign, for obvious reasons.)
Only time I think you should be able to actually be liable for speech is if you’re actively calling for violence against someone or a group. (Which isn’t protected by law already) so..

Scotland opened pandoras box.
That's the second time I've seen a post like this. Brit living in the US for past 23 yrs. What have I missed??? Excuse my ignorance...
@ackley2803 Humza Yusef brought into law, the criminality of "hate speech".
Anyone can now be reported for saying something that an individual interprets as hateful.
There's even an anonymous hotline people can call if they overhear anything the person interprets as hateful that someone says, even if the person saying it thought they were alone and intended no harm.
I say it's opened Pandoras box because it's completely subjective and open to interpretation. How do you enforce the law on an 'offence' that one person finds hateful but another might find funny.
Humza (a Muslim) had in mind the protection of his own people (other Muslims) from blasphemy and other 'islamophobic' words or phrases.
But he cunningly wrapped it up as protection for the 🌈 community.
A Muslim. Protecting the LGBTQ++++++++ community.
Once the law came into place, they were absolutely inundated with calls and still are. Humza Yusef himself received 1000s of complaints about his anti-white speech.
He's resigned not long after.
But, we are also now having people locked up for crimes of thought, here. A woman was arrested for silently praying outside an abortion clinic.
Police are visiting and arresting people for things they say online with shocking frequency.
England is becoming a very bizarre place where honest, decent normal people are being preyed upon by the police in two tier policing.
England is becoming a place where the indigenous people of nearly 1000 years are coming far behind people who have just arrived, in nearly all aspects.
Free speech is always of the two, being likable and hateful. So simple, right? With common sense it is. When you speak to incite violence and when you print or publish false facts about someone to destroy their reputation, then these two examples are not considered free speech and we have laws to deal with those.
The problem is who decides what speech is Hate Speech.
Well done for repeating what JP said.
This was solved long ago with the saying: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me." People today let words harm them, and that's on them. We need to go back to basics.
Jordan is absolutely right. How is it that some people can do hateful atrocities and yet not saying a word can be just as hateful. Just look what is happening in Israel

If you shout "kill the jews" - that would be hate speech that not everybody hates
Why is that kid yelling… perhaps with a civilized tone a person could have a conversation with him. I can’t even get through this video.
😂
I agree with him 100 percent. I am glad that his answer promotes free speech. 9:00 AM
My God given rights don't end where one's feelings begin. Now, be an adult and deal with freedom's potential to be dangerous to your emotions.
That's the problem, these young kids don't know how to adult. There was a girl on X who commented about some tragedy, wherein she said that she didn't want to live in a world where any day could be her last. As if we're guaranteed to live till live expectancy. I told her that's how life has always been, any day could be your last, every day is a gift. They lack knowledge and perspective.
Love how these types like to drop the bigger words to impress others with their vocabulary...rather that letting everyone listening to understand the point being made clearly.
A truly Intelligent person will try and explain in the simplest terms.
Most likely trying to impress JP…I doubt it worked😆
Everyone in the room bar Peterson passed the Oxford entry requirements so the "big words" are trivially easy for them to understand. The student might have used simpler words were he talking to a youtube audience.
@@righteousshift482Obviously you didn’t understand a word then.
He was purposely trying to show off which is why his pal was laughing next to him.
You fell for it clearly.
@@savannahglebe5165 You have an incredible ability to read people's minds.
I lack this, though I didn't find a word he said difficult. Clearly my linguistic ability outstrips my telepathic ability. (Perhaps not yours though.)
Freedom of speech does not exist to make you or anyone else find anything or be anything. It is a human right to express in speech your conscience and beliefs. It is not a tool to improve society.
Prefect take
Freedom of speech should be absolute, if not then people in power will misuse this power of curtailing.
